Post your school's 2004 Match Lists!!!

I'm uncomfortable making value judgements about one specialty over another, but am I the only one bothered by the # of students from the most elite medical schools (Yale, Harvard, Hopkins, Wash U) going into derm? It strikes me that there is something out of balance with the admission process screening @ those schools when you getting such large numbers of the class (and usually among the top students in those classes) opting for a field that so peripheral to the core curriculum.

Not really bothered or surprised. Elite schools generally have very competitive people who are attracted to very competitive specialties. If you tell a group of highly competitive people that Dermatology is the hardest specialty to get into with the best lifestyle and good $$$, a lot of them are going to go for it. But it is not just derm. Ophtho, rads, all the surgical subspecialties are also over-represented at the elite schools.

mamie,

I notice that HMS had 3 OMS matches. I thought only dentists could go into OMS.

You have to remember that here at Harvard the dental students graduate with a DMD. They have to take the same classes in the first two years as the medical students along with dental classes in the afternoon. After their first two years with us, they then go and do their own dental clerkships. Because they take the same courses as the med student, the dental students have the opportunity to also get their MD after completing their DMD. All they have to do is do the 3rd and 4th year medical clerkships (along with taking the boards) and they get their MD and go on into OMS. I honestly couldn't tell you what path each person took, but it is easier for dental students here to get their MD than most places.

peace

Could someone post a link to either USF's and/or NYCOM's match list? I'm interesed in a particular student at each school, so the lists with names would be preferred.

Unless you are a stalker, you could probably contact the student and find out yourself.

I hope everyone realizes that these students matching to competitive programs are doing so because they are good candidates and qualified ones, not because of the school they attend. I can just see it now: I have to go to Yale! They matched like a dozen people into derm and I want to to derm because I suffered from acne when I was 12!!! So if I don't get into Yale and have to go to NYU I might die because NYU only matched a couple of people into derm and they had to go to Alabama! (I'm making a joke, for all I know NYU had 30 people go into derm. It doesn't matter)

Our match list has lots of mistakes. There are many PGY-1 hospitals listed instead of PGY-2. The school has been notified.

Optho matches total 6. Long Island Jewish, SUNY Downstate, WMC-Queens, Bronx Lebanon, WMC (I think) and I can't recall the last one.

I wish things worked that way. For the most part they don't. True, top students from any school get matched to great hospitals. However, even average-to-poor students from top schools match into excellent programs simply because of their school's name. Hospitals know that every residency applicant looks at the make up of their current resideny body. And every hospital would love to have a substantial number of people from Harvard, Yale, Hopkins, etc.
As far as how candidates get selected into top schools: believe me, it's not all merit. It's a combination of affirmative action, political influence (every somebody wants their children to go to Harvard, etc), legacy and merit. If for example, Senator Kerry's daughter wasn't Senator Kerry's daughter, would she still have gone to Harvard? And if you can get a recommendation from Senator Kennedy, YOU CAN ALSO go to Harvard! :hardy:

Where is the match list for the University of Michigan? Anybody have it?

What you're saying is correct to a point, and I pretty much agree. But I still think people put way too much importance into it. People who get into these med schools are generally uber-competitive types, thus more of them will end up in these med schools and end up looking for competitive residencies. At my school (UMass) 60% got their first choice, and I think 80% routinely get 1-3rd choices. Thus, I would consider this a great match list.

Does anybody have access to George Washington's matchlist and Michigan State's? Thanks!

I must be the only one who could care less about a school's derm placements....

No, I'm right there with you. I understand the competiveness of derm, but since I don't want to go into derm, I don't have a clue why I'd even care. Do people really just want derm for the money and lifestyle?! Damn I didn't work this hard to be bored the hell out of my mind for the rest of my life, irregardless of how nice my car is.

This thread is seriously hi-jacked. ...btw I posted this via a wireless palmpilot!

Please if u have access post more match lists. Especially for tristate schools. Einstein, UMDNJ, temple, Drexel, Nycom, Yale. Come on guys it's fun.

Not as much interest in surgical fields this year. surprisingly, no one went into urology this year (last year had 7) or ENT.

stanford's match is absolutely amazing. imho stanford's overall match quality is 10x better than UMich's, even tho the 2 are ranked the same on 'usnews'

UMich had:

4 Neurosurgery
5 Dermatology
4 Rad Onc
14 Radiology
1 Urology
5 Ophtho
1 Plastics
5 ENT
5 Ortho

And a good number of Harvard matches.

Thanks for posting Tufts; just adding some school affiliations for some of the programs and fixing a couple things (I picked up the list today). Great list; pediatrics and surgery both seemed stronger this year, and a nice balance of the different fields IMO. Last year, IM and Anesthesia were the specialties with the most "prestigious" matches overall. It will be interesting to see how things turn out for my class (lots of undecided people) next year!

Just as a side note to the person who commented on stanford versus Michigan:

One thing worth considering is the type of students that attend certain med schools. 1/2 my class is instate, and a large chunk probably want to do their residencies in Michigan or at least the midwest. I know a lot of people in my class who also only applied to regional med schools, so I'm guessing in 4 years they will also only apply to residencies in the midwest.

I don't want to get into a "match" argument of course, as both schools (stanford and Michigan) have impressive students with impressive lists. However, your post is a SPECIALITY list, not a MATCH list. While the specialities that students pick are revealing, they don't necessarily mean anything other than personal preference.

good luck to all

Point well taken. I don't want to argue what makes a good/bad match list. I was responding to chef, who said that Stanford's match list was 10X stronger than UMich. As an impartial observer, I would say that conclusion is false.

The person that posted Stanford's match list stated that someone matched at UCSF for emergency medicine. UCSF doesn't have an emergency medicine program. The only two programs in the Bay area that I know of are Stanford's and Alameda County Hospital, with Alameda being one of the most premier programs in the country.

checking out the Finch match list, sort of proves it doesn't matter where you go to medical school if you work hard.

They put people in Neurosurgery and Ortho at Stanford?
Urology at Michigan?
Plastics at Brown?
Highland for ER?

Plus lots of prominent matches in the other specialties. However, it looks like there are a lot of community programs compared to a top school and not many people going into rads, ortho, derm etc...

Nevertheless, like I said, you can pretty much go where you want no matter where you go to school.

And some people are listing MGH and Brigham's path programs as super-competitive, despite the fact that neither of these programs filled. Take it for what it's worth...

Not to wander far off-topic or create dissention, but:

Well then I don't know what UCSF has been doing with their 6 residents they take every year since 1974?!
Joking aside, you're partially correct: UCSF is actually one of the oldest EM residencies in the nation, but it is in Fresno, CA.
