PPS at Midyear

Depending on what you are seeking, it is either a must or totally useless.

How about for pgy1 residencies? Is there a point to doing PPS?

Thanks for starting the thread about PPS at Midyear. I work for ASHP and manage PPS so I can answer any questions you have. It is true that not all PGY-1 programs participate but some do so it's worth taking a look at our list of attendees. You can find that on our website (it will be updated tomorrow or Wednesday of this week.) Unfortunately, some employers wait until the last minute to list their positions so the list will continue to change throughout the next weeks/month until the meeting. It is usually pretty comprehensive by the end of October.

In terms of how it works, you post your resume or CV on our website and then you can search for opportunities of interest. You can contact employers/programs at any time beginning October 25th and schedule an interview before you arrive at the meeting. Once you're onsite there are "semi-private" booths where you're able to spend time individually with employers. If you are looking for a very specific program and they're not going to PPS, obviously it is not worth it. If you have different thoughts about what you want to do post-graduation and are willing to look at different opportunities and programs it is an invaluable experience. You will learn a lot about what types of programs are available and why you may or may not want to pursue them. Please let me know if I can be of further assistance. Here is a link to where you can find the participant list and other facts about PPS.

No. Most hospitals do not even participate in PPS for PGY1 programs.

last year a good amount of places did pgy1 pps, big names too like yale-new haven. Most pps interviews are for fellowship or pgy2 but I was shocked last year when I saw pps list.

best bet is to get the list from ppl who were going to sign up for pps anyways and then sign up if there's any place you want to interview for.

Some of the programs had booths at PPS but they were very informal. I know that this was the case for YNHH. It might be worth asking programs if they will be actually interviewing candidates at the booths or just having similar discussions to the showcase. If you're only looking at a couple programs at PPS and they are very informal, I would say it isn't worth the money. If a lot of the programs you like are there or anyone is doing a more formal interview/get to know you session, it might be worth it.
