Pritzker

Not according to everything we're told throughout the interview day. The first block has lectures from 8-5, with the lectures reducing to 8-3 by the end of the first year. At least, this is how I remember it.

Ah, now I see where the confusion is coming from. I'm just referring to straight lecture times, which is the part most people have a problem with. In reality, we don't have all that much lecture time. When you see 830-5 on the schedule, usually a max of 3 hours of that will be lectures, 2.5 or so will be lab, and then 2 hours for a break in the middle, if I recall correctly. Not so bad.

National average board scores seem very low for a school as good as Pritzker, with the types of students that go there. It wouldn't stop me from going, but it does worry me a bit.

Wow I interviewed 10/9 and have not heard anything...my status is still Yes/No...I wonder if I am on a waitlist or something

Falco, sorry to get your nerves on end. I mistakenly typed October 26th, but I actually interviewed on September 26th (9/26). I went back and corrected my post to hopefully spare others the same grief.

Agreed. Your first quarter, which is probably when you spend the most time in the med school building, you only have 3 hours a day that are just straight lecture. MWF, even though it's "8:30-5", it's actually lectures from 8:30-10:30, 3 hours off, then one lecture from 1:30-2:30, and lab from 2:30-5. Keep in mind that's the time scheduled for lab - most days don't last that long, some days last longer. Plus, I always find that lab time flies by. TTh we had our clinical skills "lecture" scheduled from 11:30-12, but there was usually only a lecture on Tuesdays (and there were maybe 5 or 6 in the 10 weeks of the quarter), and Thursdays is small group interactive stuff, like learning how to do heart and lung exams - something that's really rare to get in your first year, never mind your first quarter!

Winter quarter your schedule eases considerably - especially since you only have anatomy lab 3 times a week instead of 5, and if i remember corretly it's an hour shorter.

On top of all that, it's 8:30-5 assuming you GO to everything, all the time. I'd say that's pretty rare. People do tend to generally go to class, but many people choose to spend that time studying on their own and do just fine. When I was in undergrad, this idea sounded completely abhorrent to me - I thought when I got to med school I'd go to every lecture, that that was the only way to learn. I learnt differently very quickly, and while I did go to most lectures, you figure out very quickly which ones are worthwhile and which ones to miss, and my test grades were still consistently above average. And I'm definitely NOT someone who spends every free moment studying, or is just "incredibly smart" naturally (I know that tends to be the write-off when people on this site hear "I don't have study 8 hrs a day").

Just to put in my two cents compared to other curriculums - I'd say you sometimes have to beware of schools that cut back significantly on lecture time. Remember that starting medical school is a *huge* transition (it really will be unlike anything you've ever done before), and you're essentially learning how to speak an entirely new language. Lecture time really helps with that, and I often find when talking with med students at schools with more PBL-type cirriculua that those students are essentially left to fend for themselves. I really feel like that's not the case here, the profs and TAs are amazing and always ready and willing to help. Just a thought.

True. Honestly, if I were in your position again, I can't say that it wouldn't come up in my head from time to time. But, I always tell people: Board scores are the means to an end, and the end tends to be pretty good for peeps coming out of here. So really, it shouldn't be as big of an issue as some other things.

thanks for posting, looque, it's good to know no one has posted an acceptance from my interview date or after yet.
i probably need to chill... i've been sweatin chicago like i'm waiting to get asked to PROM!

When was your interview date? Mine was first few days in October

i interviewed 10/10 and still haven't heard...im getting anxious

My student-host at Pritzker stressed to me that Pritzker really works you... that they dont baby you and really ask a lot of you (more so than other medical schools in his opinion... which he gathered from talks with his friends at other top schools). He told me that they really just dump all the knowledge out there and make the students just absorb as much of it as possible. He also told me that their learning process isnt quite as 'teaching to the boards' as most other schools... hence the lower scores for such a reputable school... but again, does it matter if you can still get in those top residencies?

For some residencies--derm, ortho, plastics, neurosurgery, etc.--you absolutely have to ace the boards to have a chance. I really liked Pritzker. But, the low board scores really stand out. It's one thing to not "teach to" the boards. It's another thing to have a school filled with students in the 95th percentile in intelligence scoring in the 50th percentile on their boards. It's almost as if they're teaching their students to do poorly on the boards.

One thing that I really like about Pritzker is that it's Pass/Fail. Af first I didn't like this because i thought that it would encourage students to half-ass their way through medical school, but then i realized how much freedom it provides for students. If a student at Pritzker didn't think that the curriculum was preparing him for the boards, then he could make sure that he did enough to at least pass every exam, and then spend the rest of the time studying the material in a way that will help him ace the boards.

I'd be cautious to take an approach like this. Yes, all exams are pass/fail at Pritzker, but it is usually very difficult to pass. You can't half ass your way through and expect to pass. In fact, I don't think my study habits would be any different at a school with grades. We just don't have the added stress and competition among classmates.

"yes/unknown"

this means they keep reviewing you?

so part waitlist, part rejection. zero part acceptance.

status change FINALLY! oh pritzker, you coy coy school.

Me too!!! How long do you think it will take us to here after getting the Yes/yes...how long after a yes/yes status for phone calls?

in my case, a yes/yes means you hear nothing...

I'm so sorry but hope this is not off topic. Anyone has any idea about how long is the wait from the complete file to an interview invititation? Thanks so much guys. And best of luck to us all!

OMG I just got the phone call!!!! I was accepted to Pritzker!!!! Can not believe it....wow so psyched!!!!
