So I submitted an AMCAS app for an early decision at MUSC. Despite 4.0 517 I got rejected, and now I am left with a personal statement that was geared to MUSC, written about MUSC. Is there any way to change it???

That was a strategic error.

The rejection just shows that there is more than stats that goes into a decision.

Given the very specific nature of your PS, your best bet might be to cut your losses, plan on a gap year, and write a very broadly appealing PS to submit with your application next June.

It is really, really late to apply to more schools, particularly with a PS that is a love letter to a school other than the one reading your application in October-December (because that's when they'll get to your application given the applications ahead of you in the queue.)

It wasn't really a love letter, really just mentioned them as in a paragraph about my aunt. As far as strategic, non-rolling med schools exist and I'm prioritizing Dartmouth right now. Submitted the general this morning, have secondaries I am working on. This is late, you are right, but I think the scores can carry it, at least at the other two in state medical schools.

Sorry to hear this, best of luck! Is it even possible to revise your PS?
Btw your post made me extremely nervous because I applied ED and your stats are amazing. Will hear back next 2 days...

Did you also apply ED to MUSC?

I'm confused why everyone is suggesting a gap is mandatory. There are two other schools in the state, greenville and columbia, with much lower scores and application submission until december

If your PS is geared towards MUSC specifically you are at a disadvantage everywhere else you will apply. When your application reader sees, "I'm a great fit at MUSC because X, Y, Zed" not only will they reject you, they may take offense that you had the audacity to try and pass an essay for another school off on them.

On the other hand, if your PS is geared towards serving the people of South Carolina rather than your specific match with the mission of MUSC then that's a different story.

Sorry that my and other responses seem harsh, but it's the truth.

Yes. Go back to your computer and start writing new PS's. Delete all mention of MUSC.

Take into account how some schools view reapplicants.

True. Many schools may see your stats and wonder what is wrong with you that you didn't get in on the first pass. They might not realize that you applied to only one school... but if you aren't a reapplicant to their school, they may not realize that you even applied at all in an earlier cycle. We are seeing more and more applicants who take a gap year.

Do we have to be discouraging like this?

The logical decision is to wait till next year, OP. Best of luck.

It's not discouraging. The OP should be held accountable for making such a simple mistake. Obv you can reapply but if they made a mistake so early in the app, what's to say next year isn't a disaster as well?

He's already being held accountable because he'll have to reapply. What's the point in beating him over the head with it.

Um, because he'll take his mistakes into account, make a broad PS, and apply to more schools?

OP, what did the admissions department tell you when you first met with them about applying EDP?

Look guys clearly I'm an idiot, I get it. One paragraph in my personal statement talks about how I did research in the area and thought it was admirable they saved my aunts life. My brother goes there, and I think schools will understand the motivation for an early decision. I met with an admission head who says if I send a letter explaining it to my general schools it should be fine.

Right now I have already submitted many secondaries. I do not think the lateness of the application will hit me too hard because of the scores.

Just out of curiosity, why do you think you got rejected? Is it something you can fix this cycle? Maybe your PS isn't good enough for other schools either. I'm sorry this happened to you, best of luck!

Did you meet with MUSC before you applied ED? Did they encourage you to apply? If so I can't understand why you were rejected. Could there be something in your file that raised a big red flag? I think I'd wIt until next cycle and try to figure out what went wrong. Anyway, good luck .

I did not meet, and I realize now that was a big mistake. They told me I seemed too nervous in the interviews

Wow lame. Another victim of "holistic" standards

Found the student who thinks they should only be judged by GPA and MCAT and therefor thinks they are too good to "check the boxes." Holistic standards are necessary. This is evident in the fact that despite his high stats, he was completely ignorant about the EDP process.

I guess it's not like ERAS where you can have many personal statements and just select which one goes where?

u seem mad. is everything ok?

I read somewhere that I can contact schools individually and send them the revised ps. What do you think

Contact schools directly and send them a revised PS? I thought you only applied to one school? That sounds like a terrible idea

Pretty sure OP is aware of that. It's unnecessary to keep rubbing his face in it when he asked about what his next step should be.

We are all very sorry for him. I don't think anything better can be said than what has been said already, and OP can focus on the next cycle, learn from his mistakes, grow from this experience and move on.

A sign of his maturity is that he has been able to take a joke about this, we should all be able to laugh at ourselves. You should not take life so seriously...

No one is taking life too seriously, I'm just saying there's no point repeatedly telling OP how dumb he is. Anyway, I hope OP can redeem himself next year.

Keep in mind any additional schools you apply to well expect you to substantially improve your app by the time you are re-applying, and that they'll have your prior flubbed PS on file. Not saying don't do it, just that you're creating obstacles for your future self that don't need to be there.

thank you lol i get its screwed up thats why I need opinions other than its screwed up

You have been successful so far, there`s no evidence here to say that will stop in the future, learn from this, prepare for next cycle( you`ve gotten great advise here) and you will most likely be fine.
Good luck and thank you for being a good sport!

So even if OP DIDNT apply to these said school during this cycle, they will see OP's old application during the next cycle?
