are there any psychiatry- emergency medicine combined residency programs?

not knowing the EM requirements; i am not sure if my below example applies: i know some1 who did a year of plain FP rez somewhere and then did psych as pgy-1 and now is planning to get double boarded. of course i am sure he will have to do some FP electives in the fourth. my point is that as long as u meet the ACGME reqs anything maybe possible. my guess though is that it may not be possible to do this with EM as there is some overlap with FP and psych (the 4 months of IM and 2 months of neuro gets double counted in both psych and FM and the FM electives in the psych's 4th year gets counted for both.) ur best bet would be to find and interview at one place for both EM and psych and then ask them what is possible as i know it will be extremely useful to have a psych/EM guy in the ER.

Are you joking around? You know enough psych as an ER doc to do the psych work you need. Psych as a specialty is more to manage patients long term than diagnose them in the ER. You don't need to have certification in Psych to know someone is bipolar (manic phase) or uber depressed and suicidal. You admit to the Psych ward or not - that's the question. So no, psych and ER would not be useful in the ER.

Psych and IM might be useful depending on how much you like psych because you would be managing people's conditions chronically.

Also, you don't just take rotations to be boarded in something. You have to be enrolled in a residency that's certified to train you. No residency is going to accept you for two spots.

I think Lewis Mehl-Madrona did both EM and psych, but then gave them up for shamanism. Should be able to google his site. Why not just do EM and shamanism; then you'd have all your bases covered.😀
