Hi there!

I'm new to posting on here but I could really use some direction.

I am currently entering my 4th year and have decided to pursue a residency in psychiatry. I would like to know what are some of the top psychiatry residencies to start deciding where I should apply. I am graduating from a smaller community medical school, my grades have always been honors and high pass, Step1 - 233, Step2 249.

I would like to find a program that is well respected (it doesn't have to be the absolute best academic center in the country, however I would like to keep the door open if I decide to go into academics or research later in my career). I would also like to find a program that is good for family life and has a good work balance.

I understand that psych is getting more competitive every year, I have been told with my scores I should be able to get a residency without issue, whether or not that's true, I don't know.

Thank you for all of your advice!!!

You'd be better off in the psych subforum. FWIW, i'm no expert but I know most of the northeast programs will work you to the bone. MUSC is often mentioned for having good work life balance and as being well respected academically. Most important is what region you'd like to live in. Psych programs care less about your scores and more about the intangibles. Those are also especially important in determining your competitiveness

Not interested in psych, but my SO is, would you mind elaborating on what exactly that means?

I don't want to talk out of my ass. I'd suggest you ask someone more knowledgable. I'm pretty sure I'm going into psych but I'm only finishing m2, but my impression is that involvement with the field, your personal statement, and your interviews are all much more important than step scores. That being said, as with any other field, the places at the tip top will expect you to be spectacular in everything, including your scores.

What are the top psych residencies? Is it the NYC/Boston/Philly/CA residencies? I ask because I'm interested in psych, and I'd rather avoid applying to the most competitive psych residencies. More interested in Midwest/Pacific NW/Southwest, are any of these places considered top psych residencies?

Doximity rankings are a good starting point for figuring out which are more competitive. Yeah generally the NE ones are competitive. Psych is pretty unique in the diversity of training you can get so you really need to look at individual programs.
