Hello,

This rant is going to be very pessimistic, buckle up kids.
As we all know, healthcare in this country is the biggest joke.
Physicians finish medical school, residency, fellowships, then eventually become established and end up with horrible salaries, debt, and delivering sub par care.
Why? You might be asking. Well, when you have to see X amount of patients in a day, with 10 to 15 minutes allotted per patient; it doesn't work out to be the best delivery of care I have aspired to give.
Some may say surgery is their passion; yeah try making it at the end of the year when you malpractice is between $150K to $190K a year, before taxes. Then take out your taxes! Basically, there's nothing left. How can Medical students survive after medical school, having to pay off their loans, find a place to live, have a car/ pay for commuting, yadda yadda blah blah etc. etc.. We as a country are failing our healthcare professionals. Physicians are paying the ultimate price, and with little in exchange for their services.
Physicians are being punished in this country, medicine and healthcare in general was not what it once was. What are we going to do about it?
Has anyone ever had the thoughts posted above?

did you fail medical school?

healthcare in general was not what it once was.
yes, it's not what it once was when people died from almost any infection, pneumonia and many other conditions that are easily curable and preventable now. Doctors had to visit houses, travel to different towns and villages and work 24/7 for almost nothing.

Ah, SDN. Definitely not a safe space.

YES.

But medicine requires perspective. I worked in retail. I worked in a cubicle summer before MS1, with a boss hovering behind me. Life can suck. Work can suck. People can suck.

The last thing I want to do in life is answer to someone less intelligent than me.

You guys obviously
Not much money in hem-onc, huh? Sorry to hear that, but your situation isn't generalizable across medicine. Some of us are actually doing quite well.
That's great. I never said I was doing bad. Just said physicians in general get crapped on in multiple ways. But good luck.

Thank you! You are absolutely right, I completely agree.

Do not say, "Why were the old days better than these?" For it is not wise to ask such questions.
Ecclesiastes 7:10 (NIV)

Lmao, dude. Nobody asked why the old days were better. Simply said medicine is not what is once was. Yeah, duh medical advances improved - not what I'm talking about pashahayvan, I'm talking about patient/provider relationship.

I can't tell you the last time I heard a physician complain about their take-home. If this case is in regards to you.....honestly terrible attitude. and sucks to suck. Should have been a Nurse

form your original post I read debt and salary after taxes being a main topic. I saw one sentence only about time provided per patient.

Not complaining about my salary. If you could read, you would see my concern for new / up and coming physicians. I don't get the nurse comment.

If it's about patients, then thread title should be different.

Not necessarily. Not enough time with patients = sub par care = possibly poor patient outcomes = not being able to do my job to my full desire. Try working in Manhattan hospitals, you wouldn't last a day.

Regardless of the criticism I get - I know I have a valid point. If anyone is interested, check out the documentary "Sicko" from Michael Moore. Interesting perspectives.

I'm sure it's a complete coincidence that this guy registered on SDN on the same day as that Phil guy who was banned the other day. 🙄

Wow, really looked up the day I registered. Stick to the topic kiddo.

So instead of thinking about plans to perhaps change this, be it long term paradigm shift or short term fix, you choose to complain in an anonymous forum. Want me to serve you some cheese and crackers for that whine?

I've never understood why anybody would complain about physician compensation... It makes me wonder if they've truly ever lived a day in an environment where their parents/them didn't have a total household income of six figures.

I think the ROI on an MD is like 6 million... which is pretty much the highest or second highest ROI on any degree... If you think you'd be that MBA that becomes CEO of a large-scale company and rake in the real dough, then think again. You probably would be too busy grinding to be complaining on an anonymous forum about how hard life as a doctor is.

Dude, you mentioned compensation three separate times in your original post:
Physicians finish medical school, residency, fellowships, then eventually become established and end up with horrible salaries, debt, and delivering sub par care.

It's not much of a stretch to say that you're upset about finances, even if that's not the only thing twisting your tail. There's certainly no call to go insulting others' intelligence.

Let's all relax and be polite.

I seriously think work experience, unrelated to anything medical, should be sought in the admissions process. (Goro?)

Seriously, working retail, you develop people skills, coping skills, and develop a healthy sense of perspective.

Scrolling through PowerPoint presentations learning medicine, and eventually being THE guy or girl calling the shots will have more appeal.

There are ways to combat loss of autonomy, minimize bureaucratic encroachment, supplement your income etc.

100000% agree! For many med students, residency is their first full time job.

I mentioned the cost of malpractice. Never explicitly mentioned my salary.

This is exactly what I am talking about. You hit it right on the nail. Thank you.

Actually, I lived in poverty. Your accusations are erroneous kiddo.

If you put the cheese on top of the crackers for me. Then yes.. Yes indeed lmao

If it is so unsatisfying and unprofitable, why not jump ship? The grass is always greener on the other side.

I’m not buying that this guy is a practicing medical oncologist for one simple reason: he called it the “patient/provider relationship.” No self respecting physician has ever called himself a provider.

Oooo conspiracy.

Are physicians not providers? Do not understand.

Never said unsatisfying or unprofitable.

Guys, it's getting late. Keep reading what I wrote, maybe one day it'll settle in.

My trolldar is up as well.

I wasn't aware that they paid 150 to 190k a year. That's crazy. I still can't even imagine having a career where I would make 100k+ per year either though. That also seems crazy.

Edit: career
