So I have two acceptances right now and I am having a hard time trying to decide which school I am going to be attending next year. I've already put down one of the deposits and since I have not made up my mind about the second school I am thinking I am going to put down the $100 deposit so I have some more time to make my decision. Am I unable to have more than one acceptance at a time? And if I am, when I make the choice for one over the other what is the standard procedure of giving up your spot? An official letter? An e-mail? Any advice into this would be appreciated. Thanks in advance!

You can hold as many as you want right now.

While you technically can put down two deposits I encourage you to make a decision. Schools are still interviewing potential students and you will be potentially making some unlucky student wait on pins and needles on the waitlist. As someone who rode the waitlist train all the way till June last year let me tell you it really sucks. When you want to give up your spot at a school an email to the admissions department will suffice.

The wait list is definitely not a fun ride. Even if you already have an acceptance in hand, waiting for that golden ticket from your #1 is rough.

Ok thanks good to know. And when you do give one up do you have to give them a formal letter or can you just call or email?

Just email and say you want to give up your seat and withdraw your app.

Idk about DO but for MD you can hold all your acceptances until May 15 when you need to pick 1.

That sounds like what I said on the Nova thread... That I got a "golden ticket" from my state school.

Once I got that acceptance, I waited for the weekend to search my soul to decide if I wanted to stay in Oregon, keep my house, have my wife keep her job and provide health insurance, and pay $10k per year less in tuition. One of my other options was to go to Nova, have the adventure of a lifetime, live in paradise, but have higher living expenses, and owe more than $50k over the cost of my state school. It was not an easy decision to make, and I took input from my entire family.

Once I made up my decision I declined both of the other acceptances that I have received. It only took an email to the schools and I have cut all ties with all other medical schools except the one where I was accepted. No looking back. No regrets.

Guilty... My word choice of golden ticket is not a coincidence. I had just read your comment on the Nova thread.

I'm happy you're able to stay put and start on your journey without uprooting your family and moving to the other side of the country.

That's actually very considerate dsoz. Not many people would do that.

Yes indeed it is. I can tell you right now that if I get multiple md acceptances I will not be able to decide until may 15 when I absolutely have to.

That is OK. I stole it from Willy Wonka. You can use it if you wish.

I had an adcom at a school where I canceled my wait-list spot tell me a similar thing.

We ARE trying to get into this profession to help others. Right? That should include each other. We are going to be working with each other for the rest of our careers. Rather than try to cut each other's throats and count coup (how many schools can I get accepted at), get in where you want and cancel the rest so other people have a good chance.

I only had one MD acceptance, but there were three DO schools that were in my top five. Two of those were acceptances, and LECOM-B was a waitlist

I had to cancel the DO schools soon because I didn't want to pay the deposit of either $1000 or $1250 when the middle of this month comes around. I have better thing in mind than paying a school a deposit.

Anyway, good luck with all of you. I hope your decision making process is as easy as mine.

Is there a place where it OFFICIALLY says that we can put down more than one deposit? Just want to make sure it is legal and what not

Relax dude. You can put as many deposits as you want. In fact, I'm sure all schools will be happy to take your money... Why wouldn't they take a free $1k, they won't be offended that you dropped them. They'll just take another 1k from another person.

I don't think I can call, and ask...I'm worried it would sound stupid. I think asking anyone like your advisor will be weird too. Hence, I need some SDN help.

what are you talking about? this is not a "weird" or stupid thing to ask at all. You can always call anonymously also.

So, you wont call....but you also wont listen to people on SDN telling you its ok. (and by the way, its ok)

And, on top of those things, you also want someone to google a link for you?

I know Im late to this thread, but, can I get you some toast or coffee or something?

I like my coffee black. And strawberry jelly, please.

I will feed the troll. https://www.aamc.org/students/applying/recommendations/applicants/
It is not until May 15 when an applicant can hold only one acceptance. I don't know if that is only AAMC or also AACOMAS rules.

Also, from http://www.bc.edu/schools/cas/premed/interview/etiquette.html

. Handling Acceptances: “Traffic Rules”
You may accept several offers of admission until May 15, although we recommend that applicants hold only two acceptances at any one time. The only reason to hold multiple offers of admission is to determine financial-aid opportunities at various schools. After May 15, however, schools have the legal right to withdraw their offer of admission. Around May 1, the AAMC distributes to medical schools a list of all acceptances. The schools therefore know if you are holding more than one acceptance. AACOMAS similarly distributes a list of acceptances to its member schools.

Although AACOMAS does not have the same set of "traffic rules" as AMCAS, students are advised to observe similar considerations in handling their acceptances. For the latest rules, please review the AAMC's policies.

When you receive an offer of admission, withdraw promptly (in writing) if you are sure that you prefer another school. This helps admission committees and your colleagues who have not yet been admitted. If finances are important in determining your choice, be sure to fill out, and submit, the appropriate forms as quickly as possible. Most medical schools will provide you with a financial aid packet that includes appropriate forms, as well as guidelines established by the school.

Let's address the point of this thread: so you want to put a second deposit down at a second school. At SOME point you are going to have to make a decision between the two (unless there's a better third school you're waiting to get an acceptance from - in which case I may better understand the situation you see yourself in). But why waste your money and extend the time you have to make your decision when you have enough information in front of you to make a decision (where you'd better see yourself, pros/cons of schools, and not to mention you've actually seen both of them). Just realize you are wasting your own money only to make the same decision you inevitably have to make some months down the road. And to echo other people on this thread, this is at the expense of making others wait it out even longer waiting for your response (as someone who is consistently being put on waitlists, it hits home for me  )

My advice: make a deposit at the one you want and get it over with. If it's not the one you already paid the deposit at, then pay the second one and withdraw from the first. You're allowed to hold more than one at this point, but why would you?
