I haven't taken the course, but I know someone that did and he raved about it. From what my friend said, it was a great experience for predents to get hands on experience. Sorry, don't have any more info for you than that. 🙂

I took it a while back at UCLA (where it originated) before they started to take the class on the road. It was definitely a fun class. You get to feel like a dental student for the weekend, which is a bit of an eye opener if you aren’t yet used to things being measured in fractions of millimeters in the dental world.

Will it make me a better dental student?
Probably not.

Is it worth the money?
It was ~300 when I took it and I thought it was expensive then.

Will it help in getting into dental school?
It was mentioned in my personal statement. One of my interviewers also wanted me to elaborate on my experience in that class as well as the UOP pre-dental class as well, so who knows.

If you are short on LORs, the highest ranking students based on the final wax up get the option of having the instructor write a LOR vouching for your manual dexterity (which not many regular professors can do). I ended up not using it however because it is just a template LOR with your name inserted on it.

thanx you helped alot

The Pre-Dental Society at my undergrad university was invited to these courses at Nova. They are also having a waxing course at the end of July that I am going to try to attend but I may move by then. There are also a few impressions clinics they are holding but I get enough of that at work. Here is the website for the organizers if anyone wants to find out more... http://www.vinmarsolutions.com/

Yeah, it’s all the same thing. If I remember correctly his name is Mark Hunt and he used to do these exclusively at UCLA. Now he’s added additional classes and takes them on the road for all to enjoy.

Here’s the link for the UCLA site which you’ll notice has all the same courses as his private site.

Hysteria,

Did you enjoy the class? Did you really get anything out of taking the course? Basically, did you think the class was worth your 300$? I am just wondering because my school is hosting the class and I am pretty short on funds, so I don't really want to take it unless I will learn something or if it will make my application look better... Thanks in advance for your response..

Yes.

It was fun, and I enjoyed the whole thing. At that time it was my first opportunity doing something in dentistry besides providing suction or sterilizing instruments, so I was also actually able to use and test my “manual dexterity” within a dental related task. Since I did enjoy it, and did very well (relative to others in the class), it helped reaffirm my choice that the dental field was probably the place for me, and I probably had the necessary skill set to succeed.

It is hard to tell however if it actually provided anything concrete, like improving my application. The top students in the class get a LOR commenting on his/her manual dexterity, something probably not represented in other LORs. I ended up not using it, because the scope of the letter is very narrow, but you could if you are short on these. There are other places in the application to list this class, and I did mention it in my personal statement, as well as some of the secondaries.

One of my interviewers seemed impressed by this and a few other similar courses I took, and wanted me to really go into depth. I was able to spit off a lot of terminology, tell him about the things I had already learned/made as a predent, and show that I did well all while enjoying it. I was actually surprised he wanted me to go into that much detail about them.

Is it worth $300?
Only you can decide young padawan… It’s not going to make or break an application (i.e. GPA, DAT), but it can add some depth and enhance it.

Wait a minute…. You live in the East Bay, and this is being taught at your school. I don’t know you do I?

Its being taught at CSUEB.. I am only a freshman and I doubt that I have ever met you. At first I thought about waiting a year or two before taking the course but being that it is one that involves manual dexterity, it wouldn't really matter when I take it.. You mention that you took other similar classes that your interviewers were impressed with; if you don't mind telling me, what were they? Also, the instructor teaching the class is an instructor at UCLA right?
