This is a question that my brother had and I am not sure if anyone here may be able to help but I hope so. He is a high school junior looking to get into one of the Military Academy Schools (West Point or Annapolis). He told me, if I remember correctly, that after his four years of undergrad he would owe back 5 years plus 2 years reserves. His questions are...

1.) If he were to apply to and be accepted into a dental/medical school, could he attend right away or have to give his years back first?

2.) If allowed to go upon undergrad graduation, is accepted into a medical profession school, and decided to finance school by way of Navy/Army Health Scholarships, what is the total amount of years he would owe back? Would it be an accumulation of the two or some middle ground?

i think its all numbers:

5+4 (taking the 4 year scholarship)= 9. So about roughly 8 or 9 yeas of payback. Now if he were to do a residency that's another 1 for 1 plus 1. So if he were to do OMFS then that's another 5 years on top...this is assuming that he went dental, which is the less committed of the medical profession. Also, you have to possibly consider the time in AEGD (since its no longer concurrent with serving your payback years) and the 2 years of reserve time (don't know if it's active reserve or not). So pretty much he would be a lifer. Because, 20 isn't that far out.

Also it is extremely hard to go to medical or dental school out of West Point. The academies are geared toward training platoon leaders or specific jobs like aviation, not to preparing people for graduate school. I think it would be very difficult if not impossible to get all your med/dent prerequisites from one of the academies.

If he is set on Medical or Dental (Go Dental!) he would be better off doing a ROTC program and getting a deferment for graduate school than going to an academy.

I would second this. I did ROTC, got an educational delay once I got an acceptance letter from school and applied for the HPSP. It is a pretty sweet gig if you can get it. 4 years undergrad and dental school debt free (except for the 8 year Army commitment...)

I graduated from West Point in 2004. I was able to get all the prerequisits done there except for Anatomy (some dental schools require anatomy and West Point does not offer it). You cannot go to dental school directly after graduating from West Point, but you can after one or two years of active duty service (hence why I am currently applying from active duty). They do allow approximately 20 students to go to medical school after graduation (very competitive). If you have any questions feel free to PM me.
