So I noticed UTK has a Cellular Biology requirement, and I'm trying to figure out if the following class would meet this requirement:

PCB 3023: Essential Cell Biology
"Introduction to the basic concepts of molecular cell biology in prokaryotic and eukaryotic systems including experimental strategies and methodology. This course is intended for those interested in plants."

Incidentally, it's in the Botany department, so I was worried it might be too plant focused.
Or are all cell biology classes created equal?
I emailed Deborah Shepherd but haven't heard back yet. Any UTKers out there have some input? Thanks!

I'd say that's probably ok...especially if there isn't a different cell biology offered.

Have you checked with your biochem department? My cell bio course was cross listed between biology and biochem.

Well, looking in the UTK Undergrad catalog, this is what I found as a course description:

Cellular structure and function at the molecular and supramolecular level. Topics include protein structure and function, membrane structure and function, signal transduction and cell regulation, mitosis and the cell cycle, cytoskeleton and cell motility, cell-cell interactions and tissues.

I would be a little concerned that a strictly plant-based course would not cover proteins and such all that well, but I honestly don't know.

Deborah Shepherd, the admissions contact, is super friendly and will be happy to help any student find out if classes meet requirements or not. When in doubt, just call and ask.

Thanks guys!

In case anyone was wondering, Deborah Shepherd said the class will indeed count.
