Questions for the girls interviewing

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Ive seen all of the above. Obviously, the skirts aren't too high, to the knees or whatever.

Definitely pants for me but I'm not a skirts kind of person. Plus it's going to start getting colder soon and it seems like pants are better for walking through snow drifts. 😀 Oh and I'm not sure about my hair yet. I almost always wear it in a ponytail. However I have this problem with my hair I like to call postpartum chic that I'm not sure what to do about. 🙄

i'll be honest with you, a lot of the girls i saw in skirts looked dowdy! i for one, wore pants 🙂 it was more comfortable for me with all the sitting around and waiting. plus, if your interviewing and its cold out, and theres a big tour, you might be cold, and i hate freeking hate hose!

as for hair, i think it depends on how it looks on YOU. i saw one girl with her hair pulled back in a pony tail and she looked ready to play in a sports game, yet on others it looks dignified, and same for hair down, if your hair is really long, it might look messy. i wore mine blown out with just a bit clipped back at the top. i thought it was a good middle ground.

make sure you feel comfortable, it shows if you're not feeling confident. try a bunch of styles and see what makes you feel good. :luck:

Did/are you wearing pants or a skirt? Also how are you wearing your hair? Up, down, half up?

I'm not a girl, but I've seen 90% of the people who have interviewed at my school this year. The majority of women have worn pants. Most of them have dressed in either black or dark colors. I would say that more women have worn their hair down. It seems as if the women who wore skirts were more likely to have their hair up. No matter what they wore, they all looked very professional-- that's what counts.

Hope that helps.

Pants for me too 😀 I'm not a skirt suit kinda gal 😉

I'm still deciding on the hair issue 😕 My hair is long, so I'm either going to put it up (and risk looking like a librarian) or do the half up/half down thing . . . I'm leaning more towards option #2.

Ok so I kinda would rather wear pants anyways but I was just wondering. I bought pants and a skirt for my suit so I have the option. My friend was telling me it was better for girls to wear skirts and I can't really remember the reason but that's what she said.
I'm going to have to test out some hair options. I have curly hair which is a pain in the butt.

Wait, what decade is your friend living in again? 😉

Whatever makes you feel more confident! Wear that one.

I have long hair and was considering wearing one of those cute thick head bands that are popular (I keep seeing them on The Hills), so that I can still wear the hair down but look professional. Also, a while back someone told me that glasses look more professional (instead of contacts) because they help you look studious/intelligent...I dunno. Just whichever is more comfortable I guess.

I was thinking of wearing the same thing! LC always looks so professional in them 😉

You know it! I'd also love to find some Lo-inspired black pumps. Oh my gosh I can't believe we're discussing The Hills in this forum. It's gotta be an oxy-***** or something. LOL

I like how women can take any subject and make it be about shopping and clothes.

I think the head band is a good idea! It will keep the hair off your face, which I think is a big part of the professional part. No one looks professional when they have to keep touching their hair, or its falling their face!

I thought about wearing my glasses, but they're kind of trendy looking, plus I felt like I would have too much going on with a hair clip, earrings (just studs) and a pearl necklace!

I think if your glasses are simple, or if you're foregoing any other accessories, they will look nice & intelligent 🙂

What kind of headband would look good? I haven't worn one since junior high but it would really help with my postpartum chic issue.

I have another question re: interview wear. How far in advance should one buy a suit. I've never bought one before so I'm not sure where to start. Also I've been on Weight Watchers for 9 weeks and I've lost 20 pounds. My first interview is on November 30 but I will still be losing weight over the next four weeks. Should I try to find one now and then have it tailored closer to the date?

I would go talk to the store you plan to get your suit. See how long it takes them to order the suit and tailor it.

They have to order it? Sorry I'm a very casual dresser (read: pajamas) and I know absolutely nothing about suits. I wish I had someone helpful to go with me. What are some good stores that will be helpful but not treat me like an idiot? 😛

haha, the first thing that came to mind is Men's Warehouse but I don't think that will work for you! If I remember, when I ordered my suit, they had to order my "size" and then I was called back to get it tailored. I think the whole process took two weeks tops.

It's funny you say that because for some strange reason when I picture myself wearing a suit I always picture it making me look masculine. I know it's weird but maybe it's because I'm built more like my dad. Now everyones going to think I actually resemble a man. But anyway I guess I should go soon if it takes that long. Maybe next weekend.

Ok, first of all, I tried on over 40 suits a couple of weeks ago and I didn't have to order any of them. 😕 They were all there hanging on the rack. Maybe that's how they do it for the dudes, but not the dudettes. 😛

EEL08, congrats on your success with WW! I would go ahead and get a suit now and then get it tailored closer to your interview date. Let's say you loose 8 lbs over the next month . . . that shouldn't put you in a different size, but you might need the suit taken in an inch or so. Make sure to allow 1 week for tailoring. I looked at Macys (where I eventually found my suit), Nordstrom's (pretty expensive), Ann Taylor, Banana Republic and J. Crew. All had very nice suits ranging from $170-$500+. I had also never tried on a suit prior to a couple of weekends ago! I took a friend with me who used to work in the corporate world before she had her babies 🙂 and she was a big help. Also, the ladies at the stores know what looks good and were helpful as well.

Good Luck! :luck: Don't worry, you'll find something that looks fab! 😀

Isn't Weight Watchers amazing? My mom swears by it. Way to go on the 20 pounds! You could try the 'buy the suit two sizes too small" approach now, then watch it fit perfectly in a few weeks. There's nothing like med school interviews for a bit of motivation 😀. I've actually seen Old Navy have some pretty cute suits, so I'd keep them in mind.

I would look for the really thick headbands, some even have long fabric on the ends that hang behind your hair in the back. I would suggest a dark or neutral color headband (whatever matches your suit) and one without crazy patterns. They're pretty popular, so you can probably find them in most department stores, Target, or even younger girl stores like Claire's have good selections. It might solve the "postpartum chic" issue LOL .

Just one headband example

Here's an example of the headbands we were talking about:

DancerDoc, I love how we are all about the headbands! I'm going to look for one tomorrow!

LOL!!! I think we were searching for headband pics at the same time. You had better luck! Nice work. haha

I know, this conversation has inspired me. I need to go headband shopping aysapp. 🙂

Oh wow! Thanks for the input TT. Those headbands were my second choice. 😉

That's more along the lines of what I was thinking of. Yeah I couldn't pull off one of those headbands. I still have to figure out how to tame my frizzy hair by then.

Those aren't actually models in that picture. It is the best player in the NBA, and his buddy Lebron James.

prions I know you didn't just say 40 suits! Dang! You know it's sad to say but I don't have any friends here that I hang out with outside of classes. I even had to go shopping for my wedding dress by myself and we've been married over 5 years now. I will probably check out Macy's and Nordstroms because we have them both in the mall down the road. The first and last time I went to Nordstroms I was going through a rack and saw a thin black sweater for $212. I turned around, walked out and haven't been back since.

Thanks everyone re: Weight Watchers! It really has been great! I still have a lot of weight to go. I guess I don't exactly fit the female med school applicant stereotype. My Parents magazine says you're allowed to blame weight gain on "just" having a baby if you've given birth in the past three years. I'm especially lucky because I've had two in the past three years! 😀

Oh, that's good advice! I hadn't really thought about the accessories, but I love your pearl necklace idea. Maybe pearl studs too, as long as it's not too matchy matchy. Plus, if I wear a headband too, I'll definitely forgoe the glasses. I want to look professional, but not too busy. 😉

Eh, don't worry about not having any friends outside of school where you live now . . . you have a family! I wish I lived close by because I would go with you! 😀

Ah yes, trying on that many suits was total hell! Nordstrom’s is waaay expensive, but they do tailor for free if you buy a suit from them. I ended up opening a Macys card and spending way too much $$ on my suit, but that was because I had been searching for 2 days and I was getting panicked! I love my suit, though. Let me know when you find one! :luck:

I had to search FOREVER for a suit because apparently no store carries suits in talls 🙄. I ended up ordering a pant suit from JCPenney's catalog and that's worked out fine. Oh, and I wore my hair half up.

Aww that's so sweet. I would love for you to go with me! 😀 I am very busy with my family and I do have friends they just all live in other states/countries so I'm not a complete loser. Up until today I had completely forgot about all the money I would have to spend on suits. My credit card is going to love me!

I got my suit at New York and Company. They have a pretty good selection better than what I saw at sears and jcpennys. I spent about $150 for jacket, shirt, skirt, and pants. And for spending that much I got some awesome coupons that I used today and got a $130 peacoat for $60. I only search for a suit for one afternoon and I couldn't really afford to spend more than $200 for everything. It looks good though so I'm sure I'll be fine.

Oh and I love the headband idea I'm really gonna consider that. Too bad I just got back from the mall and dont really want to go again before Monday. And I love the Hills!!! Such great drama.

I love that we're all hooked on headbands. I hope we get to our interviews, scan the group and find nothing but headbands. All except for the guys, of course (well you never know). My goal is to find the perfect interview headband by the next LC/Brody hook up. j/k

i got some great headbands at target, for like 5-10 each, so even if you only wear it once its not such a big deal.

another place to look for suits is tj maxx/marshalls. i know by me (tri state area) we have really great finds! of course, it is hit or miss, so you've got to look before you need it. any outlet type stores can have good deals too, as long as you're willing to dig a bit!

what color suits did everyone decide on?

and dancerdoc--i LOVE pearls, i think they are girly and classy at the same time! and def perfect for an interview outfit. i actually dont have pearl earrings so i wore diamond studs, but i think pearl necklace and earrings is good and def not too matchy, unless of course you have pearls on your headband too!! 😀

I'll definitely have to check there too although I'm not sure what sizes they carry. I've seen that they have good sales but it's been forever since I actually shopped there. What kind of shoes is everyone getting? I don't wear heels so if I need to get some I have to start learning how to walk in them now. Oh I'm 5'2" by the way if that makes any difference.

This is random but I think it's so funny how people from that part of the country always refer to the tristate area as if there's only one and we're all supposed to know which one. It cracks me up everytime. But on the suit color topic, is it generally just adviced to get a dark color suit? I'm not planning on looking for fuschia or anything but something other than black would be nice, although red is one of my better colors. 🙂

Okay another thing, I never wear makeup. What do I do for interview day? You guys know you're jealous of me. I don't dress up, don't wear makeup and have frizzy hair that I don't know what to do with. You all wish you could live my life!

My friend convinced me to get pointy heel shoes which I find stupidly hard to walk in. She said they looked better for interviews (same girl that said stuff about the skirt which I think she read some article about why it was better for girls to wear skirts but I cant remember why) anyways I've already bought them now so thats what I'm wearing. Black stilletto heels with a pointed toe. They are nice shoes though that are probably a good addition to my closet.
Also my suit is a dark navy blue. Of course I'm still wearing black shoes with it so hopefully it will all look ok. I'm so freaking out about everything.

Haha I have frizzy hair too! is your hair curly? mine is so I use herbal essences curl mousse. I like it a lot.

I got into CCOM wearing a brown tweed suit coat from Ralph Lauren, a white long-sleeve shirt with a sleeveless tan sweater over, dark brown pants, and black shoes.

As future health care providers, I think you should all dress appropriately on your interviews. I suggest this:
LA-83246-pnk.jpg

I don't think that would fly with the female interviewers, or those looking for serious students.

But it could land you a doctor if you're not too serious about med school, ladies!

It's not exactly curly but kind of. The bottom curls more but it's long so it's weighted down. Plus when I brush it out the curls go away and then it's more wavy. Oh yeah but my postpartum regrowth of hair that frames my face is insanely curly and frizzy. It looks fabulous I tell you. I actually boycotted Herbal Essences when they were playing the "yes, oh yes" commercials but I will have to try it again now that they have less annoying commercials. 🙂

You're going to wear stiletto heels to an interview?! Insane. Seriously, get other shoes. Unless you wear those all the time and can handle walking around all day for tours and whatnot.
