Quitting job...

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
My boss already knows that I'm leaving, since I asked her for a recommendation letter when I was applying. I've talked to her about it some, indicating I will probably be leaving in early July. However, I probably won't give "official" notice until Apr-May, I start looking at when logistically we can move due to my SO's job, finding a place to live, etc. I want to give her enough time to hire someone else and have me train them, if she chooses.

What about you? It's probably trickier for you since you have your own practice, right? How much notice are you going to give your clients?

And, yes, I am dying to quit my job and get on with med school! I'm counting the days (literally, I made a spreadsheet -- I'm nerd but I'm okay with it 😀). On the other hand, I guess we should try to enjoy it because I'm sure we'll longing for the days of free time and doing nothing next year about this time.

Technically I have to give 30 days notice to my clients and referral sources.

The tricky part is whether I want to keep my credentials and licensure active when they come up for renewal. I'll probably opt for inactive status in the event that I ever do speech therapy or supervise/own a therapy clinic. I'd have to do my CE credits and pay an activation fee, but it beats paying the expense to keep it active when I'm not using it.

I keep telling myself that I will NOT work while in med school and that I'll just have to live off of loans, but the recent financial discussions in pre-allo are making me uneasy about the amount of debt I'm going to have at the end of med school 😱

It's funny cause everything that IUGrad said is my situation too. My boss already knows I'll be leaving since he wrote one of my LORs and I told him probably in July unless I miraculously sell my house and live off the profits for a month or two. I'd like to give a few months notice to train the next guy or gal too except that my boss just hired a recent PhD grad who I am supposed to train so that might already be taken care of by then. I am so dying to quit, you have no idea!!

I'd also like to not work for once in my life during medical school; like having the childhood I never had. But alas, I may get a job once I see how strenuous the courseload is. I'm sure I could get a part time lab job on the weekends.

My boss is trying to convince me to get my masters in Environmental Health instead.

What?? That's funny!

If it weren't for some outstanding debt we have, I would so work only 1 day a week right now and be a housewife.

We prob. won't pay off what we need to and will have to add that amount to our med school debt 😱 Not an insane amount but still 🙁

I'm totally worried about my car payment. Hopefully, I sell the house and can pay that off.

Meg, it is uncanny how much you look like my best friend from high school. It's scaring me.

You're not from IL are you?

LOL

yeah we have my car payment plus a home equity loan. Those are what I'm worried about. As long as I get enough from financial aid to help my husband with the monthly bill it's all good.

I know what you mean... I am working crazy hours next semester to get what I can paid off before med school begins. I hope it will be just one less thing to worry about. Otherwise, I'd be living the sweet life, too!

I'm hoping to take a vacation someplace this summer if I we can scrounge up some extra money.

Well I'm not accepted yet but if I were to quit early my bosses would probably cry and throw some tantrums and then someone would call CPS/DCFS on me.

I thought YOU were the boss there! 🙂

Ha! When I'm feeling delusional I can almost believe I'm the queen of the house but alas my kids are the ones in charge. 🙄

So true!

Thanks to Meg for teaching me how to do the picture stuff. I am actually in an outhouse in the mountains. I get very nostalgic about chlidhood stuff like toys and TV shows.

That's high class living right there. 😛 I get nostalgic a lot about things from when I was a kid, especially now that a lot of it is coming back out.

I'm a non trad in my 30's. I'm fortunate that my type of work allows 'per diem' status. I work whenever I want and take off for interviews whenever I want and still gross $4500/month working part time.....not a lot of money, but enough to live on. So, there is no 'giving of the notice' for me. I'm very fortunate. Come June or July, I'll simply take off to wherever I'm going, look for an apartment and start school.

I could do PRN as well, but I am a therapist so I have to work between 7a-8pm.

I too am my own boss, and it is so nice to take off when I want. For example, I've been off since Thursday and won't be working again until 11/26. Much needed time off!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Oh? What kind of a therapist are you? I try to work 7 days a week when I'm not going on interviews in order to pay for my 28 applications and secondaries in addition to interview related traveling costs.

Wow, you are taking a lot of time off! It must be nice!

speech-language pathologist.

and yes, it's pretty sweet. Although I procrastinated all day today and did - nothing. Except surf the net, get caught up on my TiVo and post on SDN. Oh, and nap.

Nice! I'm jealous 😀 And, here I thought I had it so good with my government job with all our paid holidays off...

why did some of you nontrads decide to become doctors all the sudden? If you all have jobs, and some of you have kids, why the radical career change?

and what is a speech language pathologist? i could take a guess but it would probably be wrong

My aunt is a speech pathologist. She works in a school helping students with speech impediments, such as stuttering.

thats what i thought. 🙂 i should have said it. I could have used your aunt before my bradenton interview. Oy, was that a mess.

Well I wouldn't say it was all of a sudden for most people. I'm not currently employed but I do have a degree that would possibly allow me to be if I chose to do so. I appreciate the area I got my degree in and it does suit my personality but I hadn't really thought about if it was what I wanted to do with the rest of my life. I could say more but then I might as well just post my personal statement up here. 😀

You can find out all SLPs do here. Much more than just "stuttering". That's like saying doctors only see people with diabetes.

Anyway, I didn't want to be an SLP anymore. I haven't for a long time now, and my hard work is finally paying off.

Why do YOU want to be a doc? Why not be something else?

Sorry for the snippiness, but a) I get annoyed when people think SLPs only work with sutterers or school kids b) have thought long and hard about my decision.

sorry megboo, i just read you post. Diregard my post prior to this one. But what made you go from speech to doctor? Im just curious.

Well, if your not teaching kids to speak better, who are u helping?

I am helping kids, just not in school. Birth-3. I see a lot of medically challenged kids with diagnoses such as CP, CF, Down's, Apraxia and Autism. I also see a lot of children who are not talking by age 2 for no medical reason.

I have my own business with this, but before that I worked for 5 years in hospitals, nursing homes, and subacute rehab centers with adults with mostly neuro disorders of speech and swallowing.

well, the short version (LOL):

I was actually in a PhD program a few years ago. Did pretty much all my coursework and working on my pilot study when it dawned on me that pretty much every interest I had was medically related and could be expanded on so much more, but that was out of my scope of practice. Anyway, there was also some "reorganization" within the department so it seemed like a good time to switch to pursue medicine. So I did and haven't looked back!

And am so friggin' happy. I like having my own business - something I see myself doing in the future, but I'm tired of doing speech therapy. Still too narrow for me.

so are u thinking pyschiatry, or pediatrics based on your prior work expierience?

no way.

I love kids and all, but, well I guess never say never. At this point it's highly unlikely.

I enjoyed shadowing gas, surgery, ER, neuro, even FP. I guess I'm just going to have to wait to get my hands dirty in MS-3/4

I'm pretty much saying never to psychiatry but generally speaking I would never say never. 🙄

I tried to quit work when I went back to pick up a year of pre-requisite courses before med school. My boss wouldn't let me. I tried to quit again when I started med school... my boss wouldn't let me then either. Maybe someday, when I'm a doctor, I can actually quit being an engineer!

My situation was very strange, i was fired before I was even hired. I graduated, was applying to medical schools and looking for work at the same time. I went to many interviews, i was almost hired at a lab, the guy was positive he wanted me to work there. I told him I was applying to medical schools but I couldn't get in last year so I don't know about this year either. He was ok with it. The day after I got an acceptance, I called him and told him I am going to medical school in august of 2008 (stupid move I guess). I don't know what happened, he just told me, he doesn't want someone who is just going leave after 9 months, he was looking for someone who will stick with the lab for a while and told me that he wants to look elsewhere.

At another job interview, the professor asked me what I wanted to do in the long term. I told her I wanted to be a physician, she said that she doesn't want someone who has an attitude "Oh , I don't care about experiments because I am going to be a doctor anyway" . I told her, that is not what I meant, and I am a very hardworking individual who is willing to give my best.
She didn't really believe me, she told me , she will call but I haven't heard from her since and its been months.

My father told me that I cannot mention that I am going to medical school in the future, but I can't do that, that would be very unethical, I dont' want to cheat anyone. I am now willing to work for little or no money, but we will see how that works out.

Meg, I think it's really great work that you do. My son didn't say his first word until after his 3rd b-day. (Well, actually he had a few that he lost by 18 mos.) He was diagnosed with autism and had to see a lot of speech therapists. He had all the other signs and symptoms of autism and they just gradually went away until he caught up sometime around 6 or 7. Do you see any other kids like this? Do you know any theories on why kids do this? Just curious.

Autism is such a socially-based diagnosis that it's often not diagnosed until school age.

Sometimes children have sensory issues or other disorders that may mimic autism early on, but remedy themselves as they get older. With autism, without diagnosis, symptoms usually get worse or stay the same. Most children with autism are nonverbal. The earlier the diagnosis and immersion in therapy for communication and other affectation, the better the outlook.

I've seen some children with apraxia (oral and limb) that had some hearing loss and were dx with autism at first. I've seen some kids who were ADHD that were misdiagnosed.

Autism is still idiopathic, and I have no real opinion yet on the sources of possible etiology. Mercury, vaccinations, even gluten have been linked in certain studies, but nothing really repeatable or verifiable. It's definitely a processing disorder of some sort, but no person with autism has the same sx as the next, which makes it that much harder to pinpoint differential dx.

They're telling us now that autism has a pretty strong genetic component. The concordance rate is 3x higher in monozygotic twins than dizygotic and chromosomes 7, 2, 15, and 16 have been implicated. Other research points to neuroanatomical abnormalities of the amygdala, hyppocampus and cerebellum.

I'd venture a guess that you may have been the victim of a misdiagnoses. There's a 10-question thing called the CHAT test to help diagnose toddlers with autistic disorders, but many of the same problems could be brought on by a developmental delay. Language is so intricately intertwined with other developmental issues at that age that the symptoms could easily mimic autism I would think.

Maybe your doc jumped the gun on the diagnosis because autism is 4 to 5 times more common is boys than girls. Who knows? I'm just glad that he seems to have gotten past the problems 🙂.

YES! Which leads to mass hysteria in a lot of parents unfortunately.

Yeah, I guess I support the neuro research, especially b/c apraxia accompanies autism in 75-80% of autistic cases. Sensory Processing methinks.

Yeah, he most definately had sensory processing issues. It's hard to explain but he hated my guitar amp even when I wasn't playing but it was on and he threw tantrums just walking by Bath and Beauty (or whatever that mall store is called) due to the smells. He still has problems with auditory processing and needing routine but it is so minimal, I am not concerned. He has a razor sharp memory, though and definate musical gifts. I took him off gluten and dairy for about a year to a year and a half back in the day and my pediatrician let me delay all of the rest of his vaccinations until right before kindergarten. I'm just thankful everything turned out so well. But I guess it all sort of haunts me and I wish they (I don't know who they is) would figure this all out so I'm always on the lookout for more info. Thanks SCPOD and Megboo. I now think it was a misdiagnosis too. Hopefully, one day we will know a lot more about this.

Meg: I'm curious, why do you say 2? I have not had much time to research this, hence my question(and your expertise anyhow 🙂.

I just wonder when I hear numbers these days in the news: it was the norm to go to 41-42 weeks a decade ago for a delivery, but now, the average is 38-39 in the mass media thanks to the miracle of convenience, aka induction.

Current SLP research indicates that it's not atypical for children to not use their first words until 14-15 months of age. After that they should exponentially build their vocab and, where the norm used to be to expect ~ 50 words and 2-word phrases by age 2, current research indicates 200+ and 3-4 word phrases is becoming the new norm. Of course this varies between sexes. Boys generally are a little bit later than girls in building vocabulary.

So, if they're not talking by age 2, there's either a medical issue (e.g. neurological or structural issues) or it's a language delay.

Really? This is interesting, I didn't speak until the age of 3 1/2 years. what causes language delay?

I have a 500-page textbook on that.

Seriously, there are a gajillion things ranging from stubborn kids to severe neurological disorder.

Oh it is good that it can be stubborness instead of some sort of neurological damage, is it by any chance genetic? do you know? anyway, thanks. this is very interesting.

I'm curious, why do you say 2?...

I'm sure Meg will chime in soon, but one of the things you look for as a doctor is "milestones". By age 2 a child should have a 250 word vocabulary and speak in two word sentences according to many "experts". By age 3 they should speak in complete sentences. That is considered "normal". Yet, not every child will fit completely into these categories. Development is an incredibly interesting field--- if you can deal with the parents 😀.
