Random AADSAS Questions: 2018-2019 Edition

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
At the end of the Dental School Applications for each school there is a "Questions" tab. Are these questions consider the secondaries or do we get more questions emailed to us later on? Thank you!
Those are the secondaries, but not every school has them up like that. For schools that don't, you'll be emailed instructions/have a separate school-specific portal to do them on.

Does it matter if I get the evaluation letter from a professor who has Ph.d or not?
I think it might be preferred but not required.
I started a Master's Program in January, but I will be transferring to a post-bac program for the remainder of this year. When adding coursework from the Master's program would I indicate that my degree is still in progress because I do plan on completing it in the future.
Yup! It's still in progress.
Why can't I see the DAT verification mark? When I click on check status, it only shows transcript has not been received. It does not say anything about if my DAT has been received. I took it last year, and I entered it manually, but how do I get it verified. I already put in my DENTPIN.
I would give it a few days to be linked to your application.

I was wondering when filling out the information for our transcripts do we need to put in our senior year classes in? Even though we might not stick to that exact schedule, or do we just fill up to our junior year spring semester?
You fill it up to all your courses that you are currently signed up for. If you have not picked courses yet and you are sending in your transcript now, it will be checked based on whatever is on your transcript. I don't think there is harm putting in the courses that you are planning to do though.
You can update your courses for the ones you will be doing / in progress during the academic update.

I will say though some schools require you to fulfill all courses that are on your transcipt/aadsas application when you are accepted. So, if you plan on dropping a course, you might want to talk to the school about it and if they care. One school I got accepted to did not care I dropped an 'in-progress' course, but another schools specifically required me to finish all planned courses that were on my aadsas application. So, dropping a course during the school year after my academic update meant i have to take it in the summer to make sure I finished that course as per my application says I was doing.

Hi Everyone! For inputting in grades for transcript verification, should we only put in "in-progress" senior fall grades or senior fall & spring? I only know my senior fall schedule, so I'm not sure how I should go about senior spring grades. (I just finished junior year of college for context). Thank you!

Are the senior spring classes prerequisites?

Under the "Environmental Factors" section of the application, how does one describe one's "Description of Childhood Residency?" Are they looking for what your neighborhood was like? Amount of people residing in the town? How the school system was? Weather all year around? This is so vague.

I have a publication and 2 presentations. Do I add them under achievements? Do I have to add any explanations regarding those or just copy and paste the citation and abstracts? Should I write 600 words long description? or is there a good amount that I can write?
For parent/guardian, do I add my sister also? of just my parents?
Also, I've taken a general education course (Music 133) at a community college next to my university, but never transferred the credit. Do I have to enter that grade in AADSAS? If I don't enter the grade, then AADSAS would never know, right? I got a B from that course and I'm just wondering if it's necessary to even report that if I didn't report it to my university.

If I shadowed at 3 different dental clinics, do I list them all separately? or just put a dental shadowing and list them in the description?

Do I have to do anything to send my DAT score? I took it in February and entered the grade I received on AADSAS under standardized score. Do I have to send it from ADA to AADSAS? or is it done automatically once I apply?

It should appear automatically if you’ve entered your DENTPIN into the app. I took it in December and it’s matched to my app.

What is the purpose of asking whether you have a relative in the family? Does it help to have one? Thank you very much! I was just curious.

1. Does it matter where we do volunteering work? I mean should it be in a dental office?
2. Is it too late to do volunteering in this coming summer?

1. Volunteering and shadowing are two different things. And no, it doesn't matter.
2. No. It is not too late. You can always add another volunteering experience after submitting your application.

What happens if you put the a course in the wrong category? What if I think a course would count under "bcp" but it's actually under "other science"? would aadsas fix it or would it cause problems on my app?

AADSAS will fix it when they verify your transcript. For example, I listed a histology class as "Neuroscience" because it was in the neuroscience department at my school and AADSAS changed it to "histology" when they verified my app. Just list it as what you think it should be, it won't cause a delay though if it's wrong.

Edit: I think I misunderstood your question. On the actual app the categories for classes are going to be more specific than just bcp and other science. It'll be by the department/type of class. You don't have to worry about whether the class is considered bcp or not, they will make the separate GPAs for you

Is June 5th the first day to submit application? I mean do we have time until then to complete our application?

Yes.

I've always wondered about this, and I feel like it might just mean that if you have family who does dentistry it might mean you have better insight into the field? Not sure. I think it's is what you are asking .

Do I have to select which letter go to which schools? (i.e. MWU-AZ only requires 2; do I pick two or do they get all four?)

I have this same question, as Loma Linda requires a clergy/spiritual leader letter. I am fortunate that my physics professor was my bishop for a time, but having him focus on the spiritual aspect of my life may not be super helpful in basically every other school. Should I just advise him to not worry about brevity and to include academic and spiritual?

Loma Linda has it's own portal with its own information that you have to fill out. It will receive all the letters you upload to AADSAS but requires you submit a spiritual letter. So on the portal you'll input the name of the recommender and their position and their email address, and LLU will send them a list of questions to answer (it's not really a letter).
For your Physics professor, I'd keep his letter academic, and find someone else to write you a spiritual "letter", which will be uploaded separately to LLU's portal. All other schools don't need a religious letter and so it's no use to upload an academic/spiritual letter to AADSAS for all the schools to see. Hope this helps! Was accepted last cycle, let me know if you have questions.

Your original answer actually answered my question! And i was just wondering if a class will count towards BCP or BCMP because I wanted to take a class over summer that would help my BCP!

Can I include study abroad as an academic enrichment? It feel like it was but I wasn't sure if the AADSAS sees it that way.

On my check status tab, it shows that the DAT scores were received on 5/15. That is the day I manually entered my scores, but also the day I entered my DENTPIN. So I do not know if "received" means they received my input of scores or the official scores.

Any idea?

Can somebody please advice me about this matter:
I have an opportunity to do about 250 hours of volunteering in a hospital. It includes training and at the end I will get a certificate from UCLA extension program. Is it better to go through this opportunity or continue my volunteering in the dental office which I am working in right now?

Is a recommendation letter from college committee a positive point in my application instead of three separate recommendation letters?

Should I enter all the DAT tests that I took before ? OR only the last one?

I had another question. If I use a fellowship i got for an achievement can I also use it for academic enrichment. It was a fellowship that allowed me to teach high school students science.

Thanks everyone for your insight so far. It has been awesome.

Mine just showed up in my AADSAS as well but showed up as received yesterday and I input all of my stuff on May 15th as well. So I think that is the official test score being received.

hi -- for the transcript entry, does anyone know what subject our college core classes fall under?

EDIT: also would freshman seminar classes be categorized as "Special Topics" or should we choose a more appropriate subject from the list?

thanks!

I’d take the 250 hour opportunity. Not because it’s 250 hours but because it’s another great thing you can add to your application and talk about during interviews. You’ve already been volunteering at your dental office for some time now, so whether you leave now with 200 hours under your belt or leave later with 400, it won’t make as much of a difference as it would if you gained 250 hours of a brand new experience that’s affiliated with a university and gives you a certificate

I don't have any licenses to list. Is that okay? I had First Aid and CPR that expired last year. Should I renew it?
Also, no one has answered this question yet.. but do I list my publication and presentations under "Awards"? For description, do I just put the citation of my publication and presentations? or citation + description of what it is about? The citation itself is already ~250 characters.

I presented my research at an event at my university and want to put it under experiences. I'm not sure whether to put the type of experience under research, extracurricular activities or academic enrichment? Same thing for paid/employed organic chemistry tutoring.

Is there a way to view your gpa through your submitted grades you put as your transcripts?

Someone told me last year that they included their publications in achievements last year so that is where I am putting mine. I also gave talks about my research at national conferences so I am including that in achievements as well. Achievements seems to be , from everyone I talked to anyway, a catch all for things that you want to highlight but don't necessarily fall into the volunteering, dental, etc...

I put the citation and a description of my contribution to the project and to writing the paper. I left it pretty brief though because I talk about the project in the research experience.

Like a sentence or so? The citation is ~250 characters lol

my school did not offer a lab sequence for our intro bio courses. We had labs integrated into most of our bio courses though, and I was a bio major and took plenty of bio credits. I plan to use a "molecular biology techniques" 3 credit course to satisfy the lab pre-req credits, but the course code is "CEM" because it was part of the biochem sequence, do you think I need to e-mail the schools to ensure that this course will satisfy the lab bio pre-req? And does anyone else have any experience with a school that doesn't offer the bio sequence? Thanks in advance

Haha yeah. I pretty much said I wrote certain sections of the paper and said refer to my research experience for the project info.

My labs were included in my courses as well. It didnt seem to pose a problem. I had integrated lab+courses for gen chem, bio, and physics.

Did you put it under honors for achievement type?

Random question. If someone I worked with didn't have their doctorate, but now they do. Do I refer to them as doctor in the description?

For schools that don't mention when to pay the supplement fee (i.e. USC), do we pay them now without hearing back from the school about secondaries?

UCLA said they send out an email on their site. I imagine that's what other schools do as well.

USC specifically, I paid the fee right after I submitted my application. As for secondaries, its secondary will come if you are selected to interview (you bring your answers to the secondaries/other papers and turn them in on the day of your interview).
For other schools, usually you pay the fee right after you submit your primary app, if they don't have any secondaries. If they do, then those secondaries will be on a separate portal and you answer those questions/pay the fee through that separate portal-- LLU, Western, ASDOH, MWU AZ, LECOM are the ones I applied to that had this. You check your status with these portals too, not AADSAS. Boston, Tufts, UoP, and UCLA had an online website where it was only to pay the fee, and nothing else.

For anyone:
I applied to a range of schools (about 12), got 8 II, only attended 4 (the SoCal ones) and was accepted to all 4- UCLA, USC, Western, & LLU. Let me know if you have any specific questions about these schools!

I was working on my experiences part of the application, and I was a little confused on how to categorize some student organizations I was a part of. One was a food drive so would it be considered a volunteer experience or an extracurricular activity? The others were also essentially community service like organizations too.

Hi! Can I request an official paper transcript from my school and have it mailed to my house and then mail aadsas the sealed transcript plus the Transcript Request form myself? I can't find a specific answer to this question.
