Random AADSAS Questions: 2018-2019 Edition

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Yea, I did that already and everything has been sent in, but the "check status" doesn't change from verified.. even for schools that emailed me saying "everything has been received & your application will be reviewed by admissions."
AADSAS is slow to update. As long as you got that email, you're good. It just depends on how fast schools like to update AADSAS, which isn't very fast-- they prefer emails, or their own portal if they have one (like LLU, MWU AZ, ASDOH, WestU, etc). So, as long as you got an email, you're fine.

Would it make sense to submit my application to schools right now or wait for my 4th reference letter from a volunteer manager (the other 3 are from academic professors)? Also is it alright to submit to a few schools first (that don't have supplementary questions on AADSAS) and apply to other schools as I complete the supplementary questions?

You can submit now and once the letter is added it will immediately get sent to schools. You can only apply to a few schools and I would if you are going to wait on some because then they will start verifying your transcripts.

Really sorry if this has been asked many times before.. on phone and so i cant search posts atm

If i plan to upload a committee letter then I'm only given room for 1individual letter on AADSAS.
Should I go with committe, science prof or do i go with committee, dentist?

Would it matter much in the beginning if schools expect something like "committee, dentist, science prof" as they would assume I would be sending them the other individual letters directly right?

A bit worried I might be really messing something up here..
Also.. if a school says on their site.. "all letters should be sent to AADSAS" then that means they dont want individual letters from writers sent to them?
How will they handle my application if I dont meet the LOR requirements without all the other letters??

Ty!!

Hi, for transcript entry if we took classes at a different university and had them transferred over, do we put the original courses under the original school and for the transferred courses on our primary school do we not bother repeating classifying the course?

Personally, I'd go with committee and science professor. There's a reason most schools request letters from sci profs. Unless you know your dentist super well and they can speak to a great number of your qualities, a science professor will be the better choice. If a school requires all three, they won't process your application until all are received. Have the additional letter sent directly to the dental schools that require it. Schools understand that you sometimes can't upload all of the required letters to AADSAS, and as far as I know, you are always able to send necessary letters directly to the school. Most schools mention this on their websites, but you can always email any schools to get their recommendation. Again, if you don't meet the requirement for letters, they will just wait until they receive them all. They won't throw it away! If you're really concerned, you can always let the school know your plans, too.

The courses should always go under the school you took them at. Put them under that school and submit your transcript from the original school. Do not list them under the school they were transferred to.

Just to follow up, do you suggest using a 3rd party LOR holder like interfolio?
One of my LOR recently retired this past Spring and I'm a bit concerned about spamming him every now and then asking if he can send to X school.

If I use interfolio I will just need to make the request through that site to send the LORs to each school without having to contact the writer?

Thank you!!!

Can you get secondary/interview invites after e-submitting w/o verification for AADSAS?

Yup for secondaries! They know that you submitted, but they just don't have your application in front of them until it's been verified. Some schools will start sending you links to pay their supplement fees, or to start filling out their secondary app. You won't get interview invites until your application is complete, which means they have your primary app, secondary app (if that school has one), and the supplemental fee paid.

I did not use Interfolio. I thought it was pretty straight forward to enter their info on AADSAS and have them send a letter request to the writer. I, nor my writers, had any trouble with getting letters submitted - including a couple less tech savvy writers.

Would you include licenses that are non-dental related but healthcare related?
I probably would, but it won’t carry much weight. It definitely won’t hurt.

1. If my physics course is titled "Electricity & Magnetism," how do I know whether to categorize the course as Electricity or Magnetism?
2. Regarding the AADSAS Financial Assistance Program, If I didn't file a 2017 1040 because I made less than $6,300 from my job last year, would it be ok for me not to turn it in. I will be turning in the W2 for my self, however.

I would, while the subject may not help you, because dental schools will probably like seeing a clean record for that licence.

1. For your physics class I would just pick one. The AADSAS people changed a few of mine but it didn't hold up my app any. If they want to change it they will and both will be considered sciences courses so nothing should really change.
2. Applying to the FAP might be a little late now, I don't know, but send everything as soon as possible because it is first come first serve. If you did not file a 1040 then make sure that you write a reasoning to them as to why you do not have it. But you can't turn in something that you don't have.

If you re-took a course but withdrew out of the second-attempt at the course, during review & finalize transcripts would you count that as a repeated course?

This is definitely a dumb question but when matching courses to schools, should you avoid matching courses you received a W or an F in?

If the second attempt appears on your transcript, I would consider it repeated.

One of the requirements for prerequisites is getting a C or better in them, so matching W or F courses would do nothing to fulfill said requirements. If you don’t have another course to fulfill them, you’d better plan on taking one in the future to meet the prereqs.

I believe and you check the instructions that W courses do not count as repeated courses.

EDIT***** From the aadsas. Repeated Classes: Courses retaken at the same school for a higher grade are
considered “Repeated.” Withdrawn courses, courses taken at different schools or
courses taken repeatedly but not retaken for a better grade (i.e. school band, gym
courses, etc.) are NOT considered repeated. If you have repeated a course, select
“Yes,” and then check off each attempt at the class to mark it as “Repeated.”
ADEA AADSAS is required to factor ALL attempts at courses into the GPA calculation,
regardless of a school or state’s academic forgiveness policies. Marking a course as
“repeated” will NOT exclude it from your GPA calculation.

Hi there, I don't know if this has been asked earlier in the thread but just wanted to get some clarification: I submitted my application on 6/26 and the status for all schools says "Completed". However, the transcript section only says "Arrived", while Evaluations says "Complete" and DAT says "Received". My transcripts were received on 6/07, and I assume they're verifying it now, but does the "Complete" status mean that the schools have my application? Thanks

Yeah, so complete means that the schools know your application exists. Most schools won't look at it until the transcripts are verified which currently has been taking 1-2 weeks. Your transcripts will turn from arrived to verified and you should get an email.

Does anyone know if the ADEA Dental School Explorer Online Tool shows the same info as the book guide? I'm most specifically interested in the class demographics, class size, and costs of attendance.

I haven't uploaded my letters from Interfolio just yet. However, if I'm not mistaken AADSAS can take up to 4 letters.
Currently, I have 3 science letters, 2 dentist letters. 1 community service letter is coming in the future.
I plan to send the 3 sciences, and 1 dentist on AADSAS's 4 letter constraint.
If I needed to send another dentist letter, or community service letter to another school, how would that work? thanks!

Some schools will allow letters to be directly mailed to them.

I just had my application verified after 8 days; however, I'm a little concerned about a specific section of the application that was verified. My English component of the Verified Academic History says that there are only 4 graded hours, even though I am claiming a total of 6 hours (2 semesters) for that section for most of my schools. I am using Rhetoric and Humanities courses (both writing intensive courses at my university) however they are only listing 4 credits verified towards English requirements. I listed both course subjects during transcript entry as their specific title, not as "English" in general.

The Verified Credits and Grade sections of my downloaded application are not filled in so I don't know if the schools have even looked at the subjects to make any note on the prereqs.

Should I email AADSAS to ask if they can reassign the courses or should I email the schools about the situation directly? And will this delay my application?

Thanks

If I am currently taking a summer course at a college I've never attended before, do I still have to 'send in transcripts' for that college? Or would I send it in as soon as the course is over and graded onto an official transcript?

You do not have to provide transcripts for in progress courses. I’d submit your application as soon as possible, without the grade. But yes you could update your application with the grade at a later date.

Hospital experience that was shadowing under a general MD surgeon but inspired you to go into dentistry as there were patients that were referred to specialists and you did get to see some oral health/conditions do you count it under volunteer or dental experience?

Is it weird if you volunteered at a hospital and your relative was your supervisor, can you still add that to your application?

For this question: "Have you ever been disciplined for academic performance (e.g. academic probation, dismissal, suspension, disqualification, etc.) by any college or school"?

If it states on your transcript academic probation for low grades for a semester do you have to explain that here and if so how much should you elaborate?

I would count that as volunteer. Dental is more specific to working with dentists or in the dental field.

You can add it. There is nothing wrong with working with relatives. Just make sure you have other experiences.

I took the spot to talk about why I struggled that semester and what I did to remedy the situation so that it wouldn't happen again.

Is there a place I can describe my hobby more in-depth? I play guitar a lot for leisure, and I record covers of songs.

Manual dexterity would be a good place to talk about that. Your PS might also be good if you have the room.

Got it. I was thinking of writing it under experiences, but wasn't sure if I should since I'm not in an 'official' org or anything. Guitar doesn't fit into the theme of my personal statement at the moment haha..

Understandable. I am not sure wear in experiences you could fit it in unless you could work it into an achievement or a club/band.

So if I need to make a change in my planned courses for my submitted+verified transcript, (my application isn't submitted yet) though, would it be possible for ADEA to 'un-submit' my transcript?

What would you need to change? If the transcript is verified that means it should be correct.

I'm thinking of taking a different lab instead of the one I inputted, for my last year.

Is there a day of the week that schools tend to send out invites, or is it sprinkled throughout the week?

You should be able to edit an planned courses. Once the course is complete you will need to resend the transcript.

From what I've seen publications on papers is under "Achievements" and listed as an "honor" right?

Also.. how do I list the current progress of the papers? For example, if the manuscript is being written as of right now and should be submitted around early September, do I say submitted so when my application is being reviewed it will be accurate?

Silly question but must you indent your personal statement or can you simply leaving spacing between paragraphs?

I had a similar question, so even if you submit a transcript and the courses there differ from what you have planned (and have inputted by hand on the AADSAS) is that okay?

Indents won't work on the application, you'll have to leave spaces between paragraphs.

Yes, they just want an idea of what you'll be taking, but you don't have to stick to it word for word. You'll send in an updated transcript during the Academic Update period anyways, and that might show different courses than the one you have submitted now- that's fine. 🙂 AADSAS might change it to match what's on your transcript, but you can just change it back during the Update period. Since it's planned, I don't think they'll change it.

You're right. I actually called ADEA AADSAS today, when they made me realize that I could indeed change grades since I haven't submitted apps yet. I was under the impression that my transcript was 'locked' since I went through the 'review and finalize' button, and I saw that my transcripts for my previous classes had been received by ADEA. silly me.

For Academic Enrichment, would it be ok to put dental school shadow days, waxing courses, pre-dent workshops? or would that go more under dental experiences?

Also, for Academic Enrichment, would it be ok to put down more 'character-building' things like being a bio TA, an course in the education dept for job training, and a public speaking course? thanks!

The dental school days and stuff like that are definitely academic enrichment. I also included my TA positions there as it seemed like the right spot to put them. I'm not sure about the job training or public speaking course though

I submitted by first school application last Saturday night. I was wondering how the DAT will be verified since there wasn't a DAT category in overall status of application. Will AADSAS match your inputted DAT scores and subsections to the scores from your DENTPIN? I haven't had my transcript matched from the two institutions I have attended yet, when would be a good time to call them (latter weekdays of next week)? Thank you for all your input for all my questions!

Yeah, it typically takes a weekish if you have taken your DAT already. If you just took it or will take it, it takes about 2-3 weeks, I believe. Eventually, though the AADSAS will just match the scores that are connected with your dentpin. You will not have to do anything.
