doesn't influenza kill cilia? thats why people can get superinfections of bacteria and get pneumonia as a complication to influenza, the cilia are knocked out.

I think is still up to debate somewhat. Lots of times during viral infections the epithelium itself is severely damaged and the whole cell layer will slough off, so you do lose your precious cilia. 🙂 It probably depends on the virus too. I actually worked on viruses too (not influenza, but adenovirus and RSV) and never really looked at that specifically. *itches to go infect some airway epithelia with different viruses and measure ciliary beat frequency*

Have you ever seen pictures of a smoker's airway epithelium? They basically have no cilia. Their whole airway epithelium gets replaced with non-ciliated squamous epithelium. It's nuts.

There is SO MUCH we don't know about cilia. Boy it is hard to leave the lab for so many years.

*whispers to beary* um beary can you only look at dead people's cilia?

No, you can look at live people's cilia too, but it's sort of different. These pictures are from cultures either from dead people or mice and then we isolate their airway epithelia and grow it in vitro. The cilia beat just like they do in vivo. There are people with something called "immotile cilia syndrome" whose cilia don't beat and they get serious lung infections. To diagnose that, you take a small sample of their airway epithelium during a bronchoscopy and look at it under the microscope to see if the cilia are beating. The cilia will make the cells spin around in the media. It's cool.

Has anybody here had a Papa John's pan pizza? Are they good?
they are ok. some people love them, some people hate them. They are a decent crust. I prefer their garlic dipping sauce with pizza. Yumm. Its not horrible though ... yet I prefer some real pizza from a local place.

They totally are!! I am glad I have converts to the cilia cause.

When I was doing my Ph.D. I used to dream about cilia. I don't anymore because I don't think about it all the time.

Ok, I am the world's biggest dork. But like Nikki said, they're the coolest. 😀

why do I do this? I just enlisted myself in a game of werewolf. And I have a final and 12 pages of the thread to read :meanie:

No but really I'm going to read (ochem) b/c I'm not going to be a mod tonight. *disappointed*

I just burned myself on some Campbell's soup.

I think tomorrow after my test I am going to celebrate with a nice Papa John's. Pan or original crust, that is the question.

HAHAHAHAHAHAHA

i worked for them for 3 years in college - I delivered the pizzas 🙂

They're pretty good - at like 2am after a night out 😉

Seriously, they're not Gino's East, but they're decent for the cost.

Good night thread ....

I know - I associated him with Donald Trump for so long!

You know there's something I've always wanted to ask Shredder. There are several billionaires out in this world. Amongst which Donald Trump is not even the richest. That award would go to Bill Gates. So why Donald Trump of all the billionaire heros he could hold in the world???

But there's never been an appropriate random thread which he's posted in to ask this question.

Another thing, speaking of Donald Trump, did any of you read the news article recently where it showed his new baby's room??? It was all pure gold. It looked frightening because babies need different colors and different hues in my opinion. This room was like some room out of the Versaille palace but worse. It was insane.

So I just caught back up with reading all of your posts. You guys were mighty chatty in the last 3 hours or so. Anyhow, I went to an awesomely great Italian Restaurant near Bern's for those of you from Tampa. Its called Bellas. Its wayyyyyyyyy in the South end of Tampa and really good. Me and my friend went as end of the semester thing.

It was fun. I might end up going back that way tomorrow because my friend's graduation and she wanted Italian. Its all good, I could see myself going there again as long as I don't have to drive the second time in a row.
