Welcome to Part 6! Everyone did a bang up job by hitting 10k in less than 12 days--11 days 19 hours and 18 minutes to be exact. A new record! 😀

For those not familiar with what we do here, Molly has been kind enough to put together a nice description.

Not sure what the Random thread is all about? Well, here's the answer to all your questions.

It's basically a restaurant. That serves breaststicks. And lots of cute fruit and veggies. And is patronized by a HO. And Tucker Carlson. Vin Diesel, too. Lots of race car drivers eat here, as well. We're very well respected by the Amish... one girl in particular is here almost all the time.

The food is great if you're low on iron. It's not on the menu, but you can ask about the special secret garlic cure home recipe. One of the hostesses often makes weather predictions, but she's not always around. I think she has another job with the government. Or a government. Something like that. One of the other hostesses says "Bitch, please," a lot, but she's joking... don't take it personally.

Forget anything you've heard about the girl who died here from arsenic poisoning. That was a long time ago, and she's still alive, anyway... just busy so she doesn't come in as much. Besides, a little arsenic adds a lot of flavor to just about any dish.

Pretty flowers by the entrance, hey? Lilis, they are. Beautiful. And the music is totally hopping... we have our very own DJ. Looks a little like Brad Pitt.

I guess that's pretty much all you need to know. I'm usually in the corner booth over there drinking a nice glass of wine. You're welcome to join me, anytime. We're open 24/7.

Ok, a little avatar reaction:

A-man...yours makes me super hungry, but at least it doesn't make me think that Uma Thurman is satan.

VD...yours makes me feel certain that I am a total nerd surrounded by the same. I 😍 you peeps...but if that is our sense of humor...we have serious issues!! :meanie:
Is that a request to bring VD back?

Mushy - you mean behind in MCAT study, right? Are you taking it in May, too? If so - you have time! I'm really going to push you and jlw after Jan. though (and I expect the same from you guys!) to keep up with it 😉. Gotta have the randomites' backs for MCAT prep!

jlw - Cubs played the Reds today - I only saw the Cubs score 1 run when I was working out. If it's typical Cubs fashion, then they scored early and blew it at the end! And, I'm still on an OPM strike. Cirque sounds great! Napoleon Dynamite voice: "Lucky!"

Brett - I'm watching my Tivo'd Flavor of Love. I think New York is my new favorite. She really knows how to work the system, so to speak 😉

To all football discussions: They need to take off the pads and THEN play. Sure, real men play in all weather but lightning, but they also don't wear pads or helmets, and STILL don't get hurt as much or as severely! Seriously, though, I really don't care for the NFL. What's the point? Same thing about the NBA or MLB. College ball rules though! Go Dawgs!

Anastasis: that's bizarre for being slammed for your long coat! When I used to work in hospitals doing VFSS and swallowing therapy on CVAs and TBIs, I always wore a long coat - I learned fast after having a stroke patient choke and vomit all over my pants. Never got flack from the radiologists or ward docs.

Hi to the rest: beary, nikki, evo, Williams, Durden, Rad, Guju, Type A, oxeye, A-man, Fe, and anyone else I forgot!

Off to finish Flavor Flav! Yeah boy! I know what time it is!

Good afternoon. How's it going? 🙂

They didn't have to have as many pads or helmets as the old days. Those guys were TINY. Seriously, the centers were barely 150lbs at best. Now you have MANY guys well into the 300lb range. Guys still get very hurt when hit by these guys and without the padding, we'd seriously be talking many deaths.

According to this article, 20 years ago, VERY rare for a 300lb guy. 500 300+ pounders in training camp. One dude was 410 lbs. http://sports.espn.go.com/nfl/news/story?id=2313476

I don't see me doing much prep before Xmas. Maybe going through the EK stuff a couple of times, but I'm settling into the new job and classes, so I need to get those under control.

I'd have to go with the Reds for that game- no Cubs love around here at ALL. OPM... haven't been there since you sent me that PM. I was kinda horrified at that thread. *sigh* (ps- I'd never get a license if I did that!)

ding ding!

can I also throw in a comment about playing on actual mud (at least on the infield) vs. turf/sod?

thanks.

The Dolphins play at Pro Player Stadium, which they share with the Marlins. The baseball field is left there, including the clay. It doesn't cause problems when it rains. It just makes jerseys dirty.

I can watch some baseball games no problem. I prefer to play it, but I've just never liked the rain delays.

I can't remember the specific matchups, but I did like quite a bit of the playoff games last year. I will tune in a little bit this season, but I hate the Yankees (they try to buy the championship, I'm so happy they haven't won since about 2000). I'll be rooting for the White Sox (my favorite city) if they get in...

I hope your not a Marlins fan because that's exactly what they did in '97

If you want to compare the previous and next season, than yes, they spent more money. A lot of players decided to leave and they can't control that without spending ridiculous amounts of money. Winning takes money. Only a few times (like 2003 Marlins) can a team win without that much payroll. No team can repeat in consecutive years with such little salary, though. Now look at the Yankees payroll in that link, it's insane.

I want an honest answer: Would you root for the Gators if we somehow get to the championship game?

After giving an honest answer, highlight the text below to read:

I actually rooted for FSU last year against PSU and for Miami, but for UF when we played Miami in the Peach Bowl a couple years ago.

ha.... i'll never tell. 😉

mine is only temporary for a few more hours, it'll be back to evil uma and the posterior cervix later tonight.

i think its so cool when you see them play on the infield dirt. its only gonna be a round for a couple more years though, the marlins lease ends soon and then it will be a dolphins only stadium.

Every year since they won their last championship, they've been spending more and more. They won in 2000 with $114mm in payroll. Following years they had $109mm, then $125mm, $150mm in 2003, $182mm in 2004, $208mm in 2005, and finally back down to $194mm this year. Other than the 2nd highest payroll, they've been doubling everyone else. That's really the only team I consider who try and buy a championship. The Marlins didn't imo.

It's just funny how they went from 20th in 1996 to 5th in 1997, then all the way back down 27th in 1998 and dead last in '99. They signed a bunch of vets and big names to short term deals. It all adds up to buying a championship. I'm not saying theres anything wrong with it, it's part of the game.

Don't get me wrong, I totally agree that there are plenty of teams that try to buy championships. The Yankees do it every single year because they can. So do the Boston Red Sox. It's just part of baseball, it's the way the league is structured.

The Marlins do have a great farm system though

No worries though, the Marlins saved their reputation with that amazing 2003 team, a team who payroll-wise had no business winning a championship

I think MLB really needs some kind of cap with a luxury tax like the NBA. The Knicks (owned by that cable provider) suck so bad. They're payroll is $140mm HAHHAHAH!!!

http://hoopshype.com/salaries.htm

I was so happy that in 2003 the Marlins beat the NYY with $100mm less in payroll like you mention. 🙂

MLB reminds me of F1 a little bit. The team with the most money usually wins. One exception, though. Toyota was spending $1 billion (yes, with a B) when they first entered a couple years ago. Terrible team. They still haven't won and they spend $600 million a year now. Ferrari is the 3rd highest at aroud $300 million along with Renault and both of them win. McLaren spends the 2nd most and they haven't won this year yet.

meh. Rugby centers and props are big guys, but not 410 punds. They have to move up and down the field at any given moment (although not as much as fly-halfs and wingers). Rugby guys can beat out NFL players for speed any day (pro rugby vs. pro NFL) and endurance for sure.

Poor Nibbles. She was under our rocking lounger that I was sitting in. I went to get up and her paw was stuck under. Nothing appears broken, and she doesn't appear in pain, but she's walking with a limp. She's weight bearing without crying so that's good. We'll watch her and see how she's walking tomorrow.

Awww, poor nibbles Megboo!

My husband and I are going to get a cat when one of our dogs die (the one who thinks all furry things other than dogs are prey). We're going to name it the greek letter "Mu". Goes with the bird named Pi.

You didn't watch it live? BEARY...ok...do not talk to me...I might let it slip who won this too!

OK.

*isolates self from TypeA*

I almost never watch sports live! I like to Tivo through commercials.

Hey VD and T and any others coming to A2 that weekend - the Iowa Hawkeyes are here playing Michigan that Saturday! This means however that Sat. will be a problem in terms of going out and doing things.

Edit: Hey TypeA, does this mean you watched the race? I am so turning people into NASCAR fans. 😀

Are you going to the game?

I was sick in bed...there was nothing else on! 😉

Thankfully, NASCAR put me to sleep...I still feel awful, but thanks to NASCAR a bit more rested! :meanie:

Ouch. You just don't appreciate good sports. 😛

When I watched the race with my brother last week, he was out like a light about five laps in. Snoring and everything. 🙄

*Important Television Announcement*
Tonight is the season premiere of the Amazing Race. 😀
