"extraordinary" is kind of relative. Sure this guy is good at playing the violin, but if people who don't care for the violin hear about it, they really don't care.

Just like people argue rap artists are "extraordinary" at what they create. If you don't like rap, you're not going to care.

I remember taking ferries to visit some outlying islands outside of Auckland and there would be several buskers (street musicians) playing where the lines formed. Some listened, others were minding their own business.

I think that's the problem with the article right there. The author kept saying how "extraordinary" his play was, the pieces he played, etc. Every time the author mentioned it, they came out with it as a fact (and even gave an example where beauty is fact and not opinion). I disagreed with that part as I don't find solos with the violin interesting at all. It's just personal preference. I think they got less people stopping because 1) it's rush hour and 2) they used a violin.

I'm not one to ever listen to solo violin in my spare time. When I listen to classical it's solo piano 95% of the time (piano with orchestra and orchestra only the rest of the time). I still think, though, that I would have recognized that this guy was a great violinist.

I disagree with your idea that just because someone doesn't find something interesting, it means it is not extraordinary. Lots of people dislike the music of Bach, for example - but that doesn't take away at all from the fact that he was a musical genius and that his compositions are extraordinary. The fact that you don't like violin music does not negate the fact that Joshua Bell's playing is extraordinary. He's one of the most highly regarded violinists in the world. If his playing isn't extraordinary, I don't know what is.

You can dislike the music, be annoyed that someone is making so much noise in a public area, etc while still recognizing talent. KWIM? 🙂 Or perhaps you can't recognize the talent but you can take someone's word for it if they know what they are talking about.

LOL! You just reminded me of that one music video. I can't remember her name, but she played the piano while it traveled across the US. Something about "1,000 miles." I'm not sure, but it's a great song. I love the piano. 🙂

P.S. As far as unframed abstract artwork in a restaurant, I think only children would stop and pay attention. Vibrant colors, odd shapes, etc. 🙂 I don't think children care for anything from the Renaissance, Impressionism, etc...

Again, this goes back to what I was discussing earlier about children being in an age of discovery and so they like things like arts and crafts and just random scribbling and stuff. To them they are discovering something new. The older we get the more we adapt to concrete rules and hate abstract things. Well not all people but many people follow that pattern as they get older.

I recognize the talent. Playing the violin in an average manner is difficult enough so yes, he does have talent. As far as "extraordinary," it depends on how you define that term. In it's simplest meaning, it's "above ordinary." I guess he fits "extraordinary" since he's above the average (ordinary). 50% are above the ordinary and for someone like myself, I cannot tell the difference between many of the violinists. The author says he's highly regarded and a virtuoso, but I can't tell the difference when someone is just good and great.

Leonardo da Vinci's Mona Lisa is said to be a master piece. I've seen it several times in person. I really couldn't care less for it (didn't help it was behind several inches of bullet proof glass). Did Leo have talent to paint it? Absolutely. I couldn't replicate it if I tried 1,000 times. Do I think it's extraordinary? No. Yes, it is, in the sense it's highly regarded and well known, but to me, in my opinion, is it extraordinary? No. It's just another painting and not a good one at that. Please, give me a Monet or Pissarro any day of the week over that Mona Lisa.

Wow, last night's episode of Lost was AWESOME!

Poll: Juliet, good or bad?
i wonder why they let us know that there was a plan involved.
They could have just not told us the plan and then hit us with the hammer later on after having sympathy for her.

So when I changed my status on facebook to reflect the Baylor thing... I got dropped by a bunch of the Houston people on facebook.

Nice. Mature, really mature. Nothing to the rumor of jealous/hate/general gunnerism at ALL. 🙄

 Getting defriended on facebook is the ultimate diss. That being said, I don't understand why something that trivial would stop people from artificially inflating their friend count. That'd be like us post-****** deleting our own irrelevant posts on SDN.

Glad you like the new avatar btw. 😉

Tee, pengouin, and meg: looking forward to one helluva party! :hardy:

Lately I've been thinking about how the paper scores will be viewed vs. the computer. Is that crazy? I'm suddenly feeling slightly insecure about my app after my PS and activities stuff is getting done.

My dog officially has one less toe. I can tell she hurts a lot right now but hopefully she'll be as good as new in a few days. And woohoo - she doesn't stink anymore! I'm not sure why it smelled so horrible, but it did.

I hope the cancer hadn't spread already. 🙁

Shoot! I just remembered that I had a doctor's appointment this afternoon. 🙁 Totally slipped my mind with dealing with my dog today. She was supposed to have the toe removed Tuesday, but I took her to the vet this morning because it was getting worse and they decided to do it today.

I feel like an idiot. Oh well - I guess I'll just call on Monday and apologize profusely.

Hope not either. Hope she's doing better 🙂

:hello: Just wanted to drop in to say hi to all in Randomville. Three more weeks and the semester is done! Sad though, I 😍 my Anatomy lab group.

Oh and guys: I just totally identified someone I know in real life from a post on SDN. Too funny. Though I don't think he knows me well enough to pick me out - I met him through my ex a long time ago.

Awesome, I'll check it out!

I had a VA autopsy today and was SO beat when I got home that I slept from 6-9. Maybe that is why I am still up now. 😳
i thought you were always up this late, playing WoW. But judging by your very prompt responses, Im guessing you're not playing right now.

Yeah you're right. 😳 I signed off WoW to "go to bed".

If I weren't on call I would still be playing. But don't want to be dead tired tomorrow if it's a busy day.

What are you up to this weekend?

Not much going on this weekend. Might meet up with a few friends from college who live around here.

I'm actually pretty tired right now and I'm staying up again doing absolutely nothing once again. 🙄

What up??

I still can't get over how disturbing that movie I saw last night was!

It was just too freaky and creepy for words. It was a muder mystery thriller with an unexpected twist that totally threw me in for a loop.

I don't want to give it away though.
