Well, well, well...I am facing an unusual situation. I was called for jury duty for the MONTH of July. A whole month? Apparently so it says...report every week at their pleasure. Even if you are not assigned to a trial. You can be assigned at any time. Just keep showing up. COME ON! 😡 Anyway, as directed I submitted (in writing) a request to be excused based on the fact that I will have class 6 times/week (3 days x 2 class periods) plus an independent study course during that time. The due date to have the request in is June 15 which likely means they will not even read it until the 15th. They also said that this matter would not be dealt with over the phone since the judge has to grant the excuse. My problem? The last day to drop my class is TODAY. If I don't drop and don't get excused, I will have to settle for a 'W'.... and I don't want to deal with another of those. This is going to be the most unproductive summer ever. If there is nothing in the mail today, (which I expect to be the case) I have to drop my class! AGGH. 😡

hmm, sounds like grand jury duty. that really sucks. my bf got that in the mail and he called about getting out of it (b/c we're moving in july and it's for august); they said he had to mail in some documentation once we move and it will be all set. did you try calling them?? i really think you should be able to get out of it in your situation. that would be ridiculous if you couldn't.

hopefully you arent going to be assigned to another OJ trial. That one went on for years
i thought jury duty was just one day and you pretend you are very biased.😕

I have done that in the past. Of course, that was in a normal place..you know, one where you show up for a day and if you don't get assigned you get to move on with your life? Well, that is not the way they handle it here. Even if you never get assigned, you have to continue showing up. WTH? I mean seriously? How do people do this that work? I am really lucky that the worst thing is that I have to drop a class that I already don't have time for. Funny thing is, I wouldn't mind sitting on a jury (provided it is a short one), but right now is not a good time. Not that anyone really has a month to give up at any time.

Ugh. Oh well. I will drop my class and then likely be excused from duty which leaves me with extra time to work on my other course and volunteer. Not horrible. It added a friggin' semester to my post-bacc plans, but I suppose that is the way the cookie crumbles sometimes. 😳

Oh, bummer!!! See, there ARE good things about being an immigrant - nobody makes you go and do jury duty.:meanie: 👍

I've never heard about jury duty in Russia...I'm not even sure there's trial by jury there....😕 LOL.

Work is SOOO boring today! 🙁

I'm studying, a lot, but my brain is fried already and I have another 90 mins here and 5 hours before i'm done with class and home.

When will this day end??!

Gotta run to the hospital, I called them back and they said that they want an official volunteering application for me to go under review. Might as well, then if I get approved in the next week or so, I could put it on my AMCAS.

Hey PW - I definitely would NOT drop your class for this reason. 1) You will almost certainly get excused for educational reasons, and 2) if you don't, your university is legally required to make accomodations for you since we all legally have to do jury duty. I had a similar situation in med school and was totally stressed about it but everything worked out. The semesters add up and don't add another one if you don't have to IMHO.

Although I'm about dead to the world, i think i've decided to dbl up my work time tomorrow and not work Thursday... Big A&PII test Thurs night, and with our secretary being out on vacation Wed-Mon we're going to be very busy putting out "phone fires"... aka: I wont be able to study very well.

Yes, that'll work. God get me through one more long day..

Don't know if any of you are into Latin Jazz, but last night, my lady and I went to see Omar Sosa play at the Blue Note in NYC... it was UNF&^&INBELIEVABLE!!!

He was presenting with a new trio, called the "AFREECANOS" - joined by a bass player from Mozambique, and a drum set player from Havana. Just AWESOME - transcendental.

Suffice it to say, I had a great time. Keep an eye out for his new CD if you're into this stuff.
