Despite the threat of being banned by certain evil Randomite moderators on power trips, I couldn't resist posting a nice set of breasts.

Happy Thanksgiving Randomites!

I'm going on hiatus from SDN for a while.

You know you need a break when people you've never met start raising your blood pressure.

I'll be back to post when I get word from SIU.

Be good randomites!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

😀

I know what you mean. Enjoy your hiatus. We'll miss you here. 🙂

Fell yesterday at work and broke my right elbow (hairline fracture, not in a cast). Feel much better today but am stuck here waiting for my ride (left my car at work and got a ride home).

At least I can rest my right arm and use my right hand for typing today! Last night my right hand was all numb and tingly. Still, going to be a difficult day I think.

Oh no! I hope your recovery is smooth, quick, and uneventful.

Not that I've been around a whole lot recently, but I have 5 tests next week, so you won't be seeing me much in that time. However, I'll be free for two whole weeks after the 15th! 😀

I've been having cravings for weird meats...I've been thinking about buying some goat meat for a while, and then last night I was perusing the latest issue of Canadian Living and they had a 5-recipe game section. The baked goose with apples sounded particularly delicious, and the duck brought back some childhood memories, as well. The pheasant pie sounded the best, so I think I'll make a trip to the specialty meat shop this coming week and get some goat and pheasant...I've never actually tried pheasant before!

Sounds interesting, Jochi!

MCAT-ing today. Feeling stronger in VR 👍 which would totally help my scores. Oh, the joys of the months to come.. 🙄

Ok, so I know this is the random thread and all, but I'm currently facing two icky dilemmas surrounding my fear that I'm not going to get in anywhere this cycle and would love some great randomite advice. 👍

Dilemma 1): To sign up to retake the MCAT or not.
Got a 28 1st time around (10 VR; 8 PS; 10 BS), got a 30 second time around (13VR; 8PS; 9BS). I think that would be perfectly ok if I didn't also have a 3.4 science GPA. I know I didn't study enough for science stuff either time and that I could kill it if I studied enough, but (a) I'll still be working 40 hours/week this semester (b) I'm also going to continue volunteering and will take a class next semester. I'm feeling like I should sign up for a date before they're all gone (some are already filled! Eeek!), but I don't want to waste $105 if I end up canceling. Thoughts?

Dilemma 2) What class to take this coming semester?
There's this fantastic-sounding "Evolutionary Nutrition" class (seminar in which journal articles are read and discussed . . . only 7 people signed up right now!) taught by my former bio prof who's already written me a LOR (probably kinda generic) . . . I think the LOR could likely be strengthened from such a small, interactive sort of class. HOWEVER, I'm feeling like I should probably take a "hard science" like biochemistry to prove that I can overcome such glaring issues on my transcript as my B- and C+ in orgo (which I got because I was an idiot - had waaay too much going on that semester and didn't study nearly enough) . . . Thoughts? (BTW - Biochem not offered in summer, and course with my old bio prof for summer will likely be something about ecology, his main interest but not so much mine)

Thanks to anyone who bothers to read my shizzle 🙂sleep🙂 and actually respond. 😀

Hmmm, take Biochem,, cant helpya with the retake. Your verbal will likely go down, but Sciences can go up.

From your post, it seems like you'll be pretty busy this next semester and that you really don't want to retake the MCAT. Sure, it'd be nice to bump your science scores up, but they didn't really move the second time, so why would they this third time?

That being said, take biochem and show med schools you can ace a tough science class. I highly doubt any adcom will be impressed by a class with the word "Nutrition" in it, no matter how many articles from Science or Nature are discussed in it. If you can fit both classes in your schedule AND excel at both do it, but at this point I think proving your proficiency in science trumps an attempt to snag a better LOR.

Instead of wasting a semester with your old prof for that LOR, maybe just ask to meet with him on the pretense of your scheduling dilemma. You two can discuss what his class will be like, have a rousing scientific debate about some topic in it, and you could update him on your accomplishments. It might heat up that lukewarm letter without such a lengthy class committment.

:luck: 👍

Ditto on Biochem and your (no) retake. 30 is respectable, and it might end up going down if you lose points in VR, even if the sciences go up. Plus you sound super busy, so don't put yourself through it again if you don't have to.

Just finished some more Christmas shopping and about to start wrapping whilst I continue studying. Unfortunately, my 21/22 harbors a HUGE impressive retake.

Thanks guys! I appreciate the feedback. I think it's what I already knew, in a way, but needed to hear. 👍 Ideally, I'd like to fit in both classes (I know the nutrition class isn't something impressive, but it really hits at a topic of interest to me), but realistically, I already know that it'd be difficult to do well in both, and I need that science GPA to go up, not down. Good suggestion about sitting down for a chat (or a few) with the bio prof too . . . that might work well.

As for the MCAT, I think I could keep that VR up (I timed myself poorly the first time around and didn't do one whole passage 😱 but resolved that issue through lots of practice VR tests). But who knows about the sciences. I certainly felt more prepared the second time around, and the bio went down! And I think the study time biochem's going to require will probably suck away any MCAT study time I would hope to have.

In random news, I did some Christmas shopping yesterday as well, and at Borders, Pingouin, I saw the perfect calendar for you. It's a freakin' huge calendar of penguins - we're talking 2' wide x 3' tall. $40, though (ouch!). 👎

When the syllabus says the exam is Monday... and the professor has been saying for weeks the exam is on Monday... but at 4pm on Sunday you look at the university exam schedule online to confirm 7:45am vs 8am and it says your exam should be Wednesday... if you're like me you freak out a bit. I mean, I'd rather be prepared early, but I'd also rather not get up at the crack of dawn if I don't absolutely have to.

Multiple emails later, 8pm.. the test is on Wednesday. *sigh*

That sucks, Pingouin . . . I hate being ready for a test only to have it postponed or some such thing. When you are ready to get it over with already, waiting two extra days and psyching yourself out about stuff is not fun. Of course, there was one time when I was freaking out about how unprepared I was for a test and it got postponed . . . that was a GREAT surprise!

I just got my sweaty little hands on some admissions stats for Canadian schools....

Applicant success rate (admitted either right away or off the waitlist):

Queen's - 7.7%

UWO - 7.9%

Alberta - 28.2% for AB residents (a glimmer of hope! 😱)

Calgary - 26% for AB residents

Now excuse me while I go kill myself....:scared:

Pingouin thinks I'll be a horrible doctor..... 🙁

*curls up in a corner and starts crying*

 I NEVER said that! I said "What IF I said.."

quit trying to get me in trouble!

pingouin! 😡
you know he gets sensitive about that

Oh yes, that's our Durden- Mr Sensitive, through and through. 🙄

It's not my fault he can't tell girl parts from boy parts. :meanie:

With a histology final fast approaching, it's time to send out the HoHo signal. Save me beary from all things H&E!

and mentioning those tasty treats might as well 😀

Gosh, I wish. 39 feels a lot more like Christmas than 81.

Trying to finish up a presentation for tomorrow night, then its off to the races with MCAT study during monday night football...
why does christmas have to be cold?
i guess it has to do with christmas trees being pine trees and they dont exist in warm weather places

yup, gooood luck everyone! praising god for another year of trimester schedule (aka: no finals before christmas) before med school.
i actually like having finals before christmas...it gives me some closure and it makes me know that i can actually spend my 11 days of break relaxing. 🙂

yeah, cold weather just seems more christmaslike. however, growing up in the south its always a tossup to whether its a white christmas or a great day to hop in the pool.

how's bout my saints? they might wildcard after all this year....

it's probably going to be minnesota but who knows
but can anyone beat the pats! 😡

my presentation went great tonight.... woohoo. glad that's over. it was forty percent of the final grade so that's a pretty good chunk!

now the adrenaline is gone and I'm rdy to go home and get some sleep... didn't sleep well last nite (abt 4 hrs) and its been a long day.

I'm so hungry... hope dad cooked for me. lol
I'm FAMISHED! Haven't had anything to eat since 2 PM (except for a glass of pomegranate/blueberry juice), and that's with an intense 1-hour workout. Just ordered a mushroom bacon swiss burger with a side salad from the Cheesecake Cafe.:hardy:

I've been so good today! Had 2 pints of Haagen Dazs in my shopping cart (a 2 for $9.99 deal - hard to resist!), but gathered the willpower to run to the freezer and put them back at the last minute. 😆 Then I was running late to the gym (step class), and almost ended up skipping until I realized that I had invited my friend/boxing buddy to come and try out the class, so it'd be lame if I didn't show up. Thankfully, I was only 10 mins late, and she was there....good workout, except for it was REALLY hot there, I was all red when I left. 10.5 more lbs till middleweight!:meanie:
