Random non-pathology and only peripherally related to pathology thread

I fell asleep halfway through. Surprisingly, though, it seemed like a decent debate. They both sounded fairly intelligent and were interesting to listen to. I think Kerry needed to do more to counter the whole "flip-flop on the issues" deal, because he needs to make that a strong point. He should say he alters his opinion based on the current situation, and criticize GWB for having no ability to listen to anyone or modify his opinion in the slightest. I guess foreign policy debates are always more interesting to me though, because the economic stuff and health care stuff is dreadful to listen to. Bunches of promises, full of details, but none of the details ever matter.

"I would create a health care plan that provided for..." "I would focus on education by creating a plan that..."

No you wouldn't. Congress would.

LOL man, I woke up 10 minutes into it.

Conclusion #1: We have a blundering idiot who has the mentation of a 5 year old for president.

Conclusion #2: Kerry isn't that much of a better candidate than W.

W has mastered that whole "Deer caught in the headlights" expression. Do people really base their votes on which candidate performs slightly better in a debate? I mean, you've had four years to decide whether you want W for another term. Figure it out already.

I think I am going to write in my vote for president. I just don't like the Kerry-Edwards ticket and I don't like the prez much either.

Who do you think? Chewbacca? Boba Fett? I have promised myself that once I reach 35 I will vote for myself for president so I can say that someone voted for me. I just think it's too bad the american public can't handle a real candidate who doesn't just speak in "talking points" and tries not to be controversial.

You know what's funny? Political analysts have said that Bush hasn't lost many debates, if at all. I find that hard to believe...maybe all his opponents sucked.

OK new topic for the masses...what is your favorite kind of sushi? I understand that sushi varies from place to place so in that case, what is your favorite ingredient in sushi?

For me, it's all about the unagi baby!

Weren't we here before?
What brings sushi up today? 🙂

I haven't had any since the last time we talked about it.
In the past though, I have had a most excellent tempura-in-sushi roll.

Oh shoot...did we? My bad.

Just got back from eating sushi...haven't done that in a month.

It was good.

Very good.

So yummy.

You know why Bush hasn't "lost any debates?"

Because his handlers and the media always make it seem as though he is the "underdog" in every debate. Thus, if he sounds reasonably intelligent he "exceeds expectations" and therefore wins the debate. Somehow I can't put this together and figure out why this is a good thing. To me, that reasoning sounds like, "He's not as stupid as you think, and not as stupid as he normally sounds," which is hardly a great campaign slogan.

I didn't notice, did he pronounce "nuclear" correctly yet?

p.s. sushi blows.

i know topic was supposed to change, but maybe if they fear the backlash of what they would say if they stated he lost ... ie prison 😱 He is the president after all! Hmm ... where is that article about that woman that said something about W. and got thrown in prison ... *scratches her head and lifts some papers*

Not a sushi fan ...

So Andy - it's me and mshheaddoc vs you and deschutes in the battle of

Sushi: Hot or not?

Tie ballgame so far. But our combined post count is a little higher.

In regards to Dubya and criticism of him - I will give his political campaign credit - they do a great job of not allowing much dissent to get out into the open.

The statement that bothered me most about the debate: Bush, when speaking about Kerry's changing position on the issues, said something to the equivalent of "we need a leader who keeps a strong position and doesn't keep changing their mind."

Why? Can't we have a leader who realizes that an initial impression or decision may have been the incorrect one and takes steps to change that? You know, I went into med school wanting to be a primary care doc, but I allowed my opinion to change, thank goodness.

Oh I get it. So now this has to be some sort of a battle ey? And yes...there is the normalization factor with respect to post count. A little higher? Um no, I would say a lot higher. But now you have motivated me to post like a madman today. I'm gonna hit 1000 before halftime of the UM vs. Indiana game.

Dude, I was saying the exact same thing when I was watching the debate. It also bothered me that Bush kept perseverating to this single point for a while (I don't think it was the whole debate but a significant fraction of it).
One thing I do want to see is Kerry say the word nuclear (correctly) and then hear Bush in his rebuttal say nyookillar.

Obviously we will fight over this ... I want to be King Arthur though, you can be the black knight. I'm sad I missed the Monty Python discussion 🙁

As for the debate I did not watch, therefore I can not comment.

Although Mount St. Helen looks like its going to blow, not that it matters b/c noone lives within 5 miles of the place (at least). Just the ecosystem thrown off, but that is still important. Natural disasters in the US? Maybe Bin Laden is more powerful than once thought? 😕

Monty Python discussions are never over.

Interviewer : Good evening. Well, we have in the studio tonight a man who says things in a very roundabout way. Isn't that so, Mr Pudifoot?
Mr. Pudifoot : Yes.
Interviewer : Have you always said things in a very roundabout way?
Mr. Pudifoot : Yes.
Interviewer : Well, I can't help noticing that, for someone who claims to say things in a very roundabout way, your last two answers have had very little of the discursive quality about them.

Interviewer : Good evening. Tonight I have with me Mr. Norman St. John Polevaulter who, for the last few years, has been contradicting people. St. John Polevaulter, why do you contradict people?
Norman St. John Polevaulter : I don't!
Interviewer : But... You told me that you did.
Norman St. John Polevaulter : I most certainly did not!
Interviewer : [comprehending] Oh! I see. I'll start again.
Norman St. John Polevaulter : No, you won't.
Interviewer : Shh! I understand you *don't* contradict people.
Norman St. John Polevaulter : Yes, I do!
Interviewer : And when *didn't* you start contradicting them?
Norman St. John Polevaulter : I did! In 1952.
Interviewer : 1952?
Norman St. John Polevaulter : 1947!
Interviewer : 23 years ago.
Norman St. John Polevaulter : No!

And now, the fish-slapping dance.

O contrare! I shall play the role of the Brave Sir Robin who will ... "Run away! Run away!" And my minstrel will follow singing:

Brave Sir Robin ran away, bravely ran away away...

When danger reared its ugly head, he bravely turned his tail and fled...

And gallantly he chickened out, bravely taking to his feet...

He was not in the least bit scared to be mashed into a pulp,
Or to have his eyes gouged out, and his elbows broken;
To have his kneecaps split, and his body burned away;
And his limbs all hacked and mangled, brave Sir Robin!

His head smashed in and his heart cut out
And his liver removed and his bowels unplugged
And his nostrils raped and his bottom burned off
And his pen--

Plebeian! Sushi is not hot. It is the green wasabi, the root of Eutrema wasabi ground into a paste which brings tears to the eyes of fully-grown men, be they 6' 5" or over.

I should get some. Perhaps it will unplug my sinuses and cause me to sound like my normal self again.

But sushi rules. There is nothing like the feel of millions of orange masago breaking on your tongue... or the incredibly smooth texture of evenly-slivered silver-streaked salmon sashimi (did you see what I did there?). Behold, the pale golden curve of hot crisp prawn tempura! Or unagi slathered in that rich thick brown sauce, just waiting to be mopped up with rice.

Andy - we will not rise to the bait. Their combined post count may be higher, but pish tosh - they both had a head start. In terms of posts per day, they tail at a statistically-significant difference of 7.66.

P.S. It just came to me why Andy kept talking about shrubbery with regards to his story of the 32-person house.

yaah said:

Unfortunately, too often people believe that to change is to falter, and to falter is a sign of weakness and indecision. Never mind that that the initial decision was based on limited information.

Personally I rather like the concept of a benevolent dictator.... 😉

Now someone's talking my language! What did you do there? I just see a bunch of words that start with the letter "s"...oh duh...now I see 🙄

I already ran away...brave brave Sir Robin. And yaah, good job remembering the lyrics to that song. I tried to conjure up the lines but my efforts failed me. And considering college football is on, I wasn't about to pop in that DVD (again) to come up with them. But in any case, strong work!

Shoot...I think I may hit 1000 posts even before the Michigan game starts...the games that are on now aren't all that exciting.

I dug up the ole Galaxy Song...

The sun and you and me and all the stars that we can see
Are moving at a million miles a day
In an outer spiral arm, at forty thousand miles an hour,
Of the galaxy we call the 'Milky Way'.

<...insert carousel music...>

The universe itself keeps on echxpanding and echxpanding
In all of the directions it can whizz
As fast as it can go, the speed of light, you know,
Twelve million miles a minute and that's the fastest speed there is.

So remember, when you're feeling very small and insecure,
How amazingly unlikely is your birth,
And pray that there's intelligent life somewhere up in space,
'Cause there's bugger all down here on Earth.

OMG what a crappy half played by Michigan. Michigan keeps fumbling the ball, playing flat-footed and lackadaisical, they may actually LOSE to Indiana. Man o man would that be utterly humiliating.

I so can't wait for us to play Minnesota next week...that's gonna be ugly.

They're not going to lose. They are very lackadaisical (spelling butchered) today though.

Yeah that Minny game is going to be interesting. I also think Purdue is going to beat them by about 50 points.

Deschutes have you heard the Lumberjack song? Best seen on the show when the chorus keeps staring, looking confused, but still repeating everything he says.

I'm a lumberjack and I'm OK
I sleep all night and I work all day.

I cut down trees, I eat my lunch
I go to the lavatory.
On Wednesdays I go shopping and have buttered scones for tea

I cut down trees, I skip and jump
I like to press wild flowers.
I put on women's clothing and hang around in bars.

I cut down trees, I wear high heels
Suspenders and a bra.
I wish I'd been a girlie, just like my dear pappa.

The Minny game last year was awesome...comeback from 28-3 down. I was on IM call that night (damn IM). The Ohio State game last year was awesome but again I was post call (damn IM).

This year the Minny game will be close. And i agree, Purdue is gonna rip us apart...and they're at home too.

Clearly Michigan isn't gonna lose today given what the score is now, 35-7. I was lil scared at half though with the score only being 14-7.

Ohio State had a nice WHOOPS game last night. I think they were unprepared for a night game - when was the last time OSU played a night game? The national title game a few years back?

So , Andy, for all your worries about me jinxing myself by saying I had no cases yesterday? This morning, also nothing.

OH BABY! Was that sweet or what? One guy who was over at my place says, "What? You want OSU to win so that Michigan will have a better strength of schedule." I quickly proceeded to escort his ass out while screaming, "Infidel!" Look, let's face it, Michigan ain't gonna make the BCS this year; Purdue is. So screw strength of schedule. But it's always nice to see Ohio State lose (I apologize to the OSU fans on SDN; I think there's a pathologist or two at OSU who posts here); but that's the nature of being a Wolverines fan. For what it's worth, I think Tressel is a great coach and he is a master tactician out there on the football field. I feel bad for Nugent (nah not really)...I thought he was automatic but WIDE RIGHT!

Yaah, you claim to not be superstitious...that's ok, I know you snuck off and ate those Dots in the correct order...

Yes, the poor dears. OSU has had so many games over the past few years where they snatched victory from the jaws of defeat that this was appropriate.

Nope. Didn't do the dots thing. I was momentarily worried when I went in today and transport brought down the baby who had died with multiple congenital anomalies including cardiac, hepatobiliary, skeletal, deafness, and bowel atresia. And the baby still had all his IVs and tubes in. Usually, they remove all the waste if there is not going to be an autopsy. This was at about 10am, and I finished being on call at 1pm, so there was the potential I would have to do this, and start at about 11am or noon. Needless to say, that would have put my day in the toilet bowl and flushed it.

But I called the floor and the parents refused authorization, even though the clinicians wanted it. So there. How's that for jinxes? I think I have just proven that they do not exist.

I guess it depends on what counts? Having to go in at all? Or having to do a case? This is kinda grey fuzzy territory here. Normally call, in the realm of clinical medicine, means one is in house...hence no cases = no hitter = success = you da bomb = it's all good. However, you had home beeper call if I presume correctly but you had to go in...still no case to actually do.

I'm stumped on this one.

Well I was going to have to go in anyway. Like I said, there is help on saturday and they call me if there is anything (which didn't happen). But on sunday we have to go in regardless. Even if there is nothing we still have to go in and confirm that. And we have to hang around for awhile to make sure nothing develops late morning. So my day did not include any extra work. I went in, did the work, and reviewed some stuff for conference tomorrow.

Ah gotcha! So you won out today. All in all a good weekend for you then...Michigan wins, OSU loses, no extra work. Rock on!

Yes! And NE Patriots took it today too. And they were actually on tv here today. That is why I was assuming I would have to do that baby autopsy which would have ended about the same time as the game, based on my brief review of the chart and op notes.

Total spurt of the moment, random post here.

If you're not a metal fan...please disregard this post 🙂

Listenin to the new Megadeth album...on first pass, it sounds pretty kickass. Awesome to know that Dave Mustaine can play the guitar again. And Chris Poland, the original axeman, is back shreddin at lead. If you happen to have followed Megadeth and been a fan of theirs during your youth, join me in saluting their return.

Hmmm ... Megadeath? 😱

He was a legend of his own. Even if the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences rejected him. He stood for principles and laughter 👍 Caddyshack will forever mortalize him. Well that and "I went out and bought an Apple Computer; it had a worm in it"

It's always cool when you meet some of the SDN'ers in real life...like when me and yaah chatted over lunch a few weeks ago.

Tonight, I had the pleasure of meeting another SDN'er, Harbster. It was cool hangin with ya tonight.

This Guinness is for you! Cheers.

Next time, I'll drive up to DB and then you can drink ME under the table 🙂

Actually since I'm not one of the official hosts, I can't obtain drinks on the program. But that's where the stipend comes in...so yes this is one excuse to drink...but I have so so many excuses to do so.

Hell I'm a 4th year med student...in fact I'm done...so more drinky, the better.

Please don't ask me the CAGE questions...I already answered those in respect to my addiction to ADTS.

No patronizing here. All the more merrier for drinking on my watch 🙂 👍 More drinky, the better. But having reasons to do it, now that is what life is worth living for :horns:

Congrats for being done *cheers*

It's the baseball postseason, thus, lots of reasons to drink. Your team does well, so you're happy; your team is blowing it, so you're upset; your team didn't qualify, so you're also sad; you're team is playing, so you're anxious.

The resident next to me's desk is very messy. I think there are papers on there from a couple of years ago. I have not yet decided what papers qualify to make the pile on the desk, but there have to be some deciding factors.

It's also homecoming weekend at Michigan.
#14 Michigan plays #13 Minnesota.
The home team isn't supposed to lose their homecoming game...but this is a clear possibility this season.
This is a Brown Jug rivalry game.
I want a Brown Jug...fill it up with beer damnit!
This was supposed to be a haiku...too long.
Perhaps this is supposed to be a sonnet...wrong meter, too short of length.

Yup, good one. I went and it was entertaining. The Michigan QB is starting to look a lot more polished already.

You know what I hate? @#$!ing cable modems when they don't work. Every few weeks it seems to go down and if that perchance happens on a weekend, forget about it. We don't work weekends here.

So I am stuck with dialup and I am limiting my time because being on dialup is like being in a dentists chair getting a root canal with stevie wonder on the radio.

I feel your frustration. At least at my place, it seems that at random times (between 12 am and 3 am) on Saturday and Sunday, the modem seems to "reset." I don't know what that's supposed to accomplish but those are my peak weekend gaming hours and when I get disconnected I get really annoyed. Comcast can kiss my butt 🙂.

The problem with my cable modem is that it is part of the condo complex - it's nice because my cable and high speed internet are all part of my condo fees which are not much anyway (thus, no monthly bills for either). But it has its drawbacks because they don't work weekends since there isn't a huge population using it, only the several dozen or couple hundred people in the complex.

I guess I could make use of my time by reading or studying, but instead I choose to suffer with dialup and moan about it.

That's cool about the condo fee thing. I make out a check to Comcast for almost $100 per month. And I don't have digital cable! What a ripoff!

At the apartment complex here, we share the internet/cable with the few folks who are next to me and below me. Fortunately, they're much older than me and hence don't play games at wee hours of the morning...or ever! I get to hog all the bandwidth. All mine! ALL MINE! Don't touch! It's my pot pie!

Now that I think about it, I should've bought a condo here instead of paying rent for the last 7 years. Down payment is a b*tch though. Of course, that's what I'll be doing when residency starts.

I still can't believe when I started college I didn't really know what the internet was and didn't have an email. I remember trying to figure out how to get to websites (do I use a forward slash? How many of them? Do I have to put in a www?). Modern technology is crazy.

Does anyone remember the first website they visited? I tried to visit the espn website - and at that point it wasn't espn.com, it was http://espnet.sportszone.com which I had to write down. And I accessed it off a text-based telnet system because my computer in my room didn't have a web browser. My friend and I at another college were trying to coordinate our email addresses so we could send each other emails and it was not easy.

WOW ... I have been using internet since its inception back in 1967, ok I lied. I wasn't even born then, but I have had internet access for about ... well ever since it evolved into public use. I do remember how limited websites were and this is sad I also remember that website 😱 I don't think that was one of the first ones I went to though. I honestly can't remember. Prodigy and AOL didn't have worldwide web integration until after the internet took off if I remember correctly.

OMG...a few days after Rodney Dangerfield dies, now Christopher Reeve has now passed according to CNN 🙁 🙁 🙁

Ah yes, I remember my first time (on the internet, that is). It was through a service called GENIE (GE networks somethingorother) to access a multiplayer flightsim (Air Warrior, if I recall) around 1992. I suppose I must have been online during grad school (first bout with it, anyway, from 90-92) to research companies, but have no specific recollection of that.

Now, I can't imagine not having the web. There's just too much info on it - some of it even useful!

Have you ever stopped to think about just how many people you know in this world? Think of all the "grown-up" people you grew up watching on tv or in movies. What's really sad to me is that I'm going to experience each one of them passing away as I grow older.

How depressing 🙁
