And yes Andy, the Yankees may be tired but I am going to be @#$!ing exhausted. Do we hope for the rainout tomorrow, or not?

Hell no! The BoSox are on a roll! Keep the momentum alive. The momentum bar is all red now baby!

Holy ****! Houston just won on a homer!

Yeah, and the Cards got one hit. That lineup got one hit. Crazy shizzle, this game of base-ball.

Good day for baseball indeed...too bad I'm too sick to fully enjoy it.

Vodka kills pathogens right? Yes I thought so. Where did that bottle go?

I figured the Birds would lose to Clemens and Oswalt, but didn't figure they would go back to St. Louis down 3-2, especially with Lidge pitching 3 days in a row. I got a bad feelin'.

That Lidge is something fierce. He's like Billy Wagner USED to be. Strike 1! Strike 2! Strike 3, sit down!

So Schilling just set them down 1-2-3 in the first. Looks good. This will probably be a long game. And darnit, us residents all have to become experts on endometrial hyperplasia and carcinoma as well as gestational trophoblastic disease before next morning at 10am.

Because we have a path guru, Dr Kurman from JHU, coming tomorrow. We have a 2 hour multihead scope session with him on the above topics (plus some occasional rare ovarian tumors - shouldn't be hard to prepare for that either 🙄). So, we all need to be prepared.

Yes Backe was pretty great last night for a 26 year old who's only been pitching for 3 or 4 years. And what great defense by Beltran and Ensberg. Only if we had Pettitte and Wade Miller healthy !!!! Sorry. Proud Houstonian pathologist-to-be hijacking the thread. Can't wait until tomorrow. Go Astros. :gt

Of course I'm on my REQUIRED NEUROLOGY rotation and my teammates are praying to the 4th year Gods that our upper level and attending don't decide to round in the afternoon so we can listen/watch/follow the game. Damn consult service.

Astros - hottest team in baseball.

BoSox - please win. please force a game 7. pleeeaaaassseeee....

I feel your pain there - have had that happen on MANY an occasion. I used to work in an ER during high school and college, and interestingly, during big games it would often be quiet. Then, after the game, the floodgates.

I thought Cards-Astros would be a night game? Or does it depend on the status of sox/yanks? I would think they are both night games.

Another random pet peeve for Andy:

So I go to the supermarket earlier today to get some cold medicine, NyQuil, chicken noodle soup, and juice. 8 items total in my basket. I go to the U-Scan Express (i.e., 15 items or less or something like that) and all 4 U-scans are being used. That usually isn't a problem as I can be patient and wait. But all 4 machines were taken up by people with the big shopping carts full of stuff. For instance, one machine being used by a mother and her kid (Argh! Shouldn't you be in school???). Then there's the person who can't figure out how to use the damn thing and is just staring at it wishing something magical will happen. And the bag of celery stalks are just sitting on the scanning platform for minutes. Argh!

Andy: never underestimate the appeal of being able to conduct your day without interacting with anyone. That is why the U-Scan is so popular. I don't think it is because people cheat and sneak an extra box of Ho-Hos into their bag. They just like not having the cashier see that their purchase consists of 3 frozen dinners, a case of coke, potato chips, and a pack of condoms.

And if you were at the Kroger, the U-Scan is not a 15 items or less section. You can get as much as you want.

In case anyone hasn't mentioned it, Schilling is the man.

p.s. Andy, shouldn't YOU be in school? 😛

Don't give me lip! School ended.

It was the Kroger but this was the U-Scan Express on the right hand most side of the store. I thought this was a 15 items or less section. Or maybe Andy's hallucinating...I could've swore there was a limit to the # of items.

I ended up not using the U-Scan today cuz I was in a hurry. I just wanted to speed back home and get back into the bed after taking a shot of NyQuil. I went to the "normal people line" and checked out in less than a minute.

Schilling is a trooper! 6 innings and Yankees still scoreless!

Of course, I'm on call tomorrow night. 😡

Maybe they'll recognize the import of game 7 and let me out early. Maybe not.

Not a chance! It is so much more important for you to get the experience of admitting a patient and working up their intestinal obstruction. Perhaps you will be lucky and every patient room and area will have it on the tv. I remember that when I used to be on call for surgery during august - game was always on. Of course that was Worcester...

Since Sox won, Cards-Stros play this afternoon, Sox-Yanks tonite (more advertising $$, ya think?). 'Sallright, baseball meant to be played in the afternoon.

Cards need to loosen their butts-way too tight.

I'll be on call at the psych emerg. eval. center, so if they loose at least someone will be able to treat me. 'Course, if they win I'll need to boogie, lest they commit me for being manic (a 7th game win against the Yanks can cause acute decompensation in a Bostonian). I'll let you know what meds they put me on post-call. 😉

Go Sox!

Yeah - I have seen in a few articles on line that the red sox "are the biggest ratings draw in many years." Whatever that means. I hate the broadcasting - especially the STUPID 20 minute pregame show which is basically crap and time for more advertising. Half the ads are for those idiotic fox tv shows like Rebel Billionaire and the Obnoxious Boss. If anyone watches either of these shows, they need to be destroyed.

And yes, Cards might be tight. So might the red sox. Unfortunately this game is going to be a bullpen battle, and everyone's arm is already falling off. So it will come down to clutch hitting, walks, and probably some weird play. 😱

Very happy. Call is tomorrow. Game is today. Happy Primate.

Micelli kills me!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!UUUGH. I'm so nervous about tomorrow. Of course got the late afternoon neuro consult on 6 WEEK HISTORY of myoclonic jerks and Altered Mental Status --- WHY TODAY DON'T YOU KNOW THE 'STROS PLAY AT 3:00? Then get my hopes all wound up because the game goes into extra innings - race to my dad's to watch the end - only to see -- a loss. God I don't think I'll be able to eat tomorrow much less act interested in neurology. 😱

Although today - pt w/ complaints of ataxia, blah blah - mass on CT - bx today - GBM vs malignant oligodendro and we (me and the student following him) got to read it w/neuropath attending before he called the OR on the frozen. Way cool as a diagnostician -- sucks for the pt and family. only 46 y/o.

2 things:

1) You said it about certain diagnoses on frozen. I remember thinking that way on so many cases during med school. Worst one was a 30 year old guy, having a brain biopsy for tumor vs radiation changes, family was counting on the latter, obviously. Nope, high grade glioma. It's incredibly sad to realize that on that slide is the representation of the patient's future. 4 weeks later he was dead. Another bad one was a bile duct cancer, surgeon kept sending proximal margin, kept being positive, until finally he said he couldn't take anymore, and closed the patient. That was depressing too.

2) I feel your pain on Micelli. That poor guy, that's happened twice to him now. Tomorrow should be an epic struggle. Cards have to be favored, but obviously you can't count out the Astros with the hitting they have and Clemens on the mound. Now, I am no huge Clemens fan but I admire him and respect him - I was at Fenway last season during his last regular season start when Torre took him out and the Fenway faithful rose and saluted him, and he was clearly touched deeply. That being said, though, Cards are my favorite NL team (Phillies a close second) because of their kick butt fans.

HOLY @#$! while I was writing this Johnny Damon (AKA Jesus) hit a grand slam. Best T-shirt in Boston, BTW? WWJDD? (What Would Johnny Damon Do?)

Silence! There's still plenty of game left.

Tell me about it. Sox need to keep scoring more.

BTW, I am watching this game on mute when the Yankees bat, because the announcers bother me in their incessant praise of the Yankee batters' patience. It also helps since I can leave mute on for the commercials.

As a long-time Sox fan, 8-1 still isn't enough. For real.

Tito bringing in Pedro for the 7th is quite possibly the worst managing move I have ever seen.

A 7 run lead.
Derek Lowe mowing them down.
Experienced bullpen people in reserve.
Yankees and their crowd somewhat lulled.

Hey, I have an idea, let's bring in the ONE GUY who will fire up the fans and the team, and who has some kind of mental block against his normal pitching when he faces them. And let's do it early, so there is time for them to come back. And, wonder of wonders, the first batter he faces is Matsui who treats him like batting practice. He got out of the inning with only 2 runs given up, but gee whiz. Plus, with a 7 run lead, you have to at least think about potential starters for the next series. Even if you don't want to do that, wouldn't you rather save Pedro for if someone else blows it and makes the game a little bit tighter? Wouldn't you rather have Pedro come in in the 9th with a two run lead to slam the door?

I totally agree. What a stupid move! Pedro with not much rest and not enough warmup time. At least, Bellhorn hit HR #4 for the Sox tonight. We'll take what we can get!

The Sox MUST win!

That was an amazing sound - must have had a speaker right inside the pole. It reminded me of that Todd Walker homerun last year that the ump initially called foul (it clanged off the pole) and I stood up and yelled at the screen, "LET'S SEE YOU CALL THAT ONE FOUL, YOU @#@$!@#!@!!!"

Suuuuuuuuuuuuppppp (sound of primate taking breath and holding through series).

Cardinals just scored one on a suicide squeeze. 😍 😍

They will be earning my rooting affections tonight.

A student on call tonight brought up the possibility of "The curse of the Rocket." Man, like I need to think about THAT. But since I'm a sox fan, and partly of Irish extraction, I naturally expect that things will go more or less that way.

Wouldn't it be nice if . . . . I can't bring myself to even think it. 😉

Truly Heartbroken 🙁 Oh well. I wish I could take comfort in "there's always next year" but with Beltran a free agent , questions on Clemens returning ... sigh....

Here's to a World Series that is as exciting as these two series were....

Gonna have a shot of Patron and off to bed.

Only 5 more days of inpatient /consult Neurology...See there's always a rainbow
🙄

Cards reign! Cards reign! Bring on the Red Sox! I'm so pumped and I've got to present at autopsy conference in a few hours-and I don't care how badly I get ripped!

As long as the Yankees are out! Fine by me.

I'll be drunk at the casino or at the bar when the World Series Game 1 is on!

Bachelor party time baby! Woohoo!

Curse of the Rocket is laughable. Did you know that the Rocket is responsible for the red sox home-field advantage? He started the all star game this year and got LIT UP, including a Manny homer. Winner of all star game gets world series home field advantage, thus, the current situation. People are going to keep inventing curses and catchy stories as long as people continue to buy into them.

Tim Wakefield on the mound in game one. :scared: :scared: I like Wake but he is a disaster waiting to happen everytime he is on the mound.

Man, that Michigan loss to Notre Dame is looking REALLY painful now that they took out Purdue on the road. I think if they played ND again, now that the freshman QB and RB combo are so on fire, Michigan would win by 30. Curses!!!

No Kidding.

It's 8-7 now, but it "shouldn't" be anywhere close to that. I suppose, though, that it was much the same thing that allowed the Sox to rack up the early runs - that's the game. Fingers (and toes within my red sox) crossed. 😀

Got to watch part of Game 1 in the doc's lounge while I was sort of on call.

The series is beginning to look uncannily like Flames vs. Bolts did earlier in the year. Since the Flames didn't win, the Sox had better.

It was so different watching that game than watching a Yankee game, because the whole time watching last night I kind of still expected them to win - even when Manny tried to hand the game back with his stellar outfield playing. Still nervewracking though - cardiac kids! I hope my sister enjoyed it.

Only got to watch a snippet of the Michigan game...3rd quarter...Rivas gets his go-ahead field goal attempt BLOCKED. Then we had to go. Saw the score and a few highlights. I agree, yaah, that the earlier loss to ND is the bane of the Wolverine's existence. My feeling is that Wisconsin needs to lose. It could happen...versus Iowa or Minnesota...fingers crossed.

And that Sox game was awesome! Saw Bellhorn hit the foul pole clutch homer...CLANK!...CHEERS!

Go Sox! Up 2-0. Hopefully their bats can do some more damage in St. Louis.

Now let's put my pro-Sox sentiment in perspective. If St. Louis won the series, I honestly wouldn't collapse and cry. In fact, I can't call myself a true fan of either team or I would be accused of jumping on bandwagon (sorry yaah and primate...but I'm an O's fan so feel free to pelt little Andy here with your choice of insults since the O's have been sucking miserably for the last decade it seems). I just happen to root for the Sox since I really despise the Yankees and I rooted for the Sox in that series. Considering the fact that the Sox overcame what some may have dubbed an insurmountable lead in the ALCS, they got my respect. If they don't lift the Curse this year...it will be extremely disappointing.

You know, the Orioles-Yankees games used to be called a rivalry way back in the day. I remember my college days where I would skip class and take a trek down to Camden Yards and sit in the $8 bleacher section. And everytime I went (even if the Yanks weren't in town) there would always be the group of Yankee fans with their dark blue Yankee jackets who would just attend the games to heckle us. Those days are no more. And the rivalry is no more. See, rivalry presupposes that both teams in the rivalry will win some games. Nowadays, the Yanks almost always beat the Orioles. I almost thought the same way about the Yankees-Red Sox games this year because it seemed like the Yankees would win a disproportionate number of those games...until the ALCS where the Sox came back from behind and showed those Steinbrenner payoffs who's daddy!

Good week for New York! Both Giants and Jets lost too - of course the Jets are saying they "could have and should have" won the game, but I like to read the game story in the opposing city for after every Pats game, and almost all of them contains the phrase, "should have won the game." Well, that's 21 straight that you all should have won! It is also funny that Patriots fans are getting kind of funny - any time someone even remotely sleights them there are barrages of emails complaining about lack of respect.

I have noticed that to be true in a lot of parts of society. It's all about "respect." But no one wants to earn respect anymore. It is like a birthright. Whatever.

Paradoxically, if you try to tell someone they don't know what respect is, they will start yelling and screaming about how it is you that does not respect them.

No. We're festively plump.

Heh. We're fillin' out quite nicely and we're more buffed than ever!
