Ohhhh mah gawd, if you have enough time/meals in Japan, you have got to go to one of the dollar sushi places *drools.* There are a ton of different franchises as well as non-franchises, but Kappa zushi, Kura zushi, and Sushiro are some of the big ones. Including tax and tip (well you don't tip in Japan... so I guess that's a moot point), each plate is 105 yen regardless of what kind of sushi it is. They even have frequent campaigns where the plates are actually a lil less than a dollar. It's mind blowing, and you just won't understand unless you go there.
Seriously, the quality of sushi at these places are better than most "sushi" places in the US at a fraction of the price. Food safety is something they're very much on top of, so I personally trust these places much more than a lot of sushi places here. I think it's Kura zushi that actually has an RFID chip (?) on each plate so that it automatically gets discarded after a certain amount of time. But whatever, it doesn't matter which of these places you go. The uber health conscious peoples of Japan routinely take their little kiddies to these places, and that's a pretty good seal of approval.
It's kinda like visiting CA and going to In-N-Out. If you're only going there for a couple of meals, then maybe go somewhere fancier, but it's an experience to be had. So def don't substitute it for quality sushi by a real itamae if you want a true sushi experience, which is an art... but I promise you won't be disappointed if you go!
I think I have such a passion for these places, I'm sure I've posted about it before...
