Saw Zootopia tonight. Cute movie!
Yes! Not as complicated of a story, but when I was around 9, my mom got me this little seahorse necklace (I was obsessed with zoo/marine animals from a really young age) from some touristy gift shop somewhere. I wore that thing every day until the chain got too small for me. My mom took it to find a matching but longer chain and ended up losing it. We moved since then and figured it was long gone. We found it last summer in an empty zipper pouch she probably put it in so it wouldn't get lost, haha.Do you ever find something that just really brings back a wave of memories? Especially something you thought was lost?
Today I pulled a textbook off the shelf I hadn't used since first year and found the passport I hadn't seen in 2.5 years stuffed between two textbooks. No idea how it got there or how I never found it. When I was originally supposed to go to Australia two summers ago I couldn't find it. I had a friend here look around the house for me. I tore through all my stuff I had taken to my parent's place for the summer. It was so stressful, and the last ditch effort was making a day trip from my parent's place to here to tear my room apart here to find it and then back after I failed; a ~16 hour day and having a complete emotional breakdown. And it was here the whole time. And then I spent a few hundred bucks to get a rush replacement. And then because it was such a last minute plan (not my fault) I had trouble getting a visa in time and ended up having to delay it for a year and go in 2015 anyway. I guess it didn't matter in the long run, but man what a mess. Just makes me feel very dumb. I had to stop what I was doing and just sit in silence for a few minutes to process.
It depends. Do you have a basement? Are you at the lowest end of your street? Is anyone from a place that sees a lot of flooding? The weather says my area of the state might get 10 inches of rain in a 48 hour span. Well, average of 6 but 10 in some places. How scared should I be? It takes very little to put my street underwater... 😕

Also, go ahead and get your grocery/pet essentials now if you need to. If your car is too low for the flooding your street will see, you may have to stay put for a day or two. 10 inches in 2 days might be okay on your city drains, not sure. When my cousin's street flooded, they had about 8 inches of rain that day and the drains couldn't keep up!
You could get sand bags if your concerned about the water rising to your house, but they aren't going to protect 100%. Just be glad it isn't snow....that'd be 100 inches of snow 😛 You'd be trapped for a month!I live rural. There's no real drains where I am. There's a bayou right behind my house that fills up HIGH every time it rains that I'm really worried about. We don't have basements/cellars in LA for the reason that it does get wet lol. But not this wet. We will probably get off school... My campus is over 75% commuter. And campus drains themselves really suck. I'm in a rental car right now, so I probably will really have to be cautious with the water.

Get some sandbags and have a plan of where to go if the bayou floods. Don't drive into moving water over a road because the depth can be more than it appears.
Hopefully, it won't come to that.
We had massive flooding here last spring, but it was the result of heavy rain for half a month. The main road into and out of town flooded, and somebody got arrested for driving around the barricades and into flood waters.

The flooding isn't what scares me. It's the tornados. I have wretched storm anxiety with tornados because my dad was in a building that got hit a while back. (He was fine, thankfully)I had such bad secondhand anxiety for Texas that summer. That was too scary

Totally get it. A few years back, my house got hit by a tornado (of course my room was the one that was obliterated...) while we were in it. I'm actually glad we were home, otherwise I can't say my guinea pig would have survived that. My dad and I literally saw the funnel cloud touching down a few hundred yard behind our house. No one was hurt, but I still scan the skies when the weather gets weird. I'm also rural, and we still don't have tornado sirens within earshot. The flooding isn't what scares me. It's the tornados. I have such severe tornado anxiety/phobia. I've never really seen one, though there have been a few around here, including one a few weeks ago that took out a few amish buildings, but I regularly have nightmares about them. It even influenced where I would consider applying to vet school. Apparently I have lilapsophobia! The flooding isn't what scares me. It's the tornados. We actually had a tornado in my neighborhood over 20 years ago when we first moved here. I didn't see it, but we lost a tree right next to our house. I also find storms fascinating, and part of me wants to see a (small) tornado. My nightmares are intense though, and often involved multiples, so living somewhere that could have a tornado that could cause damage like seen in Joplin, MO a few years ago, honestly makes me tremble just thinking about it.I feel like Lancaster gets hit all the time, Philly and Berks count, not so much. I used to have panic attacks when I was little over them, but I've gotten a lot better and actually find storms interesting. I do get nervous if I hear about warnings and such and I'm not home to take care of my animals.
In AZ, we have pretty much no natural disasters except some flash flooding and the occasional haboob during monsoon season. Two of my schools I have been accepted at are in tornado areas, and honestly that is a major fear for me.
On the way to my MS State interview, going through Jackson I think, an ad came on the radio for storm cellars that said that Mississippi now sees more tornadoes than Oklahoma. When I was there, there was actually supposed to be storms, and they invited me to hide in the basement of the CVM should a worst case scenario occur. It was nice to know they would take care of us! Lol
It's probably a totally irrational fear, but I have legitimately zero experience on all that crazy weather stuff, which makes me nervous. I've willingly jumped out of an airplane, jumped hundreds of feet off a bridge (with a bungee attached), and gone swimming with sharks, but a tornado? Nope nope nope.I'm sure it will all work out just fine if I do go to one of those places though!
I'm okay with killer snowstorms and hurricanes. But when I was looking at residencies, anywhere that got earthquakes or tornadoes was an immediate 'Nopenopenopenope.'
I'm currently in Joplin for undergrad and also helped quite a lot with cleanup efforts back after the EF5. I'd been through a few tornadoes prior to that, but they were nothing compared to seeing the damage that that particular storm caused first-hand. It's actually kinda amazing just how far the city has come in its rebuilding efforts; pretty much everything outside of the really, really rural areas has been restored. I'll admit that, despite having lived in Tornado Alley pretty much my entire life and having gotten used it, that single event has triggered my anxiety to flare up whenever I so much as hear the sirens go off.We actually had a tornado in my neighborhood over 20 years ago when we first moved here. Is this the thread where we were talking about Neko Atsume?? I downloaded it, and have become addicted to it... Anyways, I finally saved enough goldfish to expand my yard! After a few days of debating back and forth whether I would stoop to spending real money on it, I realized I was almost there and didn't need to. Yay!
What is this game, and do I need to download it?I just downloaded it this weekend and I already have 160 golds... So close!
Funny story, tried to convince my coworkers of how addicting it was, and they were extremely concerned about the cat with the plastic bag on his head 😛.

Too addicting. You attract virtual cats to your yard. Literally so adorable and you don't have to worry about animal control showing up.
I just expanded my yard today too! Now my goal is to focus on getting the rare cats. The only one I've managed to get is Bob the Cat, and I haven't even gotten to see him yet. Luckily there are guides online that tell you which items will attract the rare cats. 😉Is this the thread where we were talking about Neko Atsume?? I downloaded it, and have become addicted to it... Whoa, stay safe! Please encourage your parents to evacuate if it's recommended for their area. It just isn't worth the risk.Update on Louisiana Floodpocalypse 2k16... Near my parents, who are an hour and a half away, water is approaching rooftops. The parish (that's the equivalent of a county for those who may not know) is in a state of emergency. They might have to be evacuated from the house soon but according to them, water isn't even close to the house. It's dumping buckets where I am now, and we don't have school today. Hopefully it doesn't rise too quickly, because the sandbags that are still in my trunk won't help anyone...

I normally have a lab on Wednesdays (which is a 45min commute away, I usually stay the night before at my grandparents' who live near campus), but because of the weather today my grandma called all worried saying to stay home, one of my sister's classes was already canceled and she didn't want me coming in these conditions. I told her I kind of have to go because it is a lab...but then my mom also texted about not wanting me to go, our country roads are flooded, and to just contact a teacher about it. My phone emergency alert went off like 4 times over the morning because of the flash flood warning being extended. I emailed the TA explaining everything and asking how I can make the lab up but luckily he was understanding and said tjust stay home and not worry about it. All this flooding sucks but at least I'm getting to spring break early! And I hope my lab partner was alright, if she went today...
Haha, don't worry, I wasn't really planning on it! I was going to go along with my dad in his truck to campus until mom told me about the conditions around our roads (grandma worries for us if it's so much as a little cold out, but if mom is saying not to go to class you know it's bad). She said the sky got so dark it looked like nighttime on her way to work.DO NOT drive in this. Someone in LA already drowned in their car
I'm super excited about the possibility of getting a paid internship working with pigs this summer. We had a lecture today from one of our swine vets/researchers and he's looking for interns to do summer research to help improve the welfare of production pigs. I would find it extremely rewarding to help with that research as I know welfare in swine production is in severe need of improvement. I spoke with the prof after the lecture and he told me to email him and that its ok that I don't have swine experience because very few of his previous interns had experience either. I'm also nervous that someone will try to burst my bubble about my excitement and tell me all the reasons why working with pigs sucks.
I spoke with one of my classmates about it as he wants to be a swine vet and has already extensively looked into the internship. He said "it's a 10 wk internship." I said ok, he said "8 hours a day, 5 days a week, so 40hrs." Again, I replied, ok. I mean I want to work full time over the summer anyway, so depending on the pay, I'm totally ok with those requirements!

Yeah, 500lb 5 year olds!Working with pigs sucks? Wish someone told me before I became a research technician in an all swine unit
Really though, I think that the most important thing about working with pigs is realizing they have the base intelligence and wiles of a 5 year old child.
