They make aspirin OTC for cats? I didn't know they could metabolize that
Narrow margin of safety. Not great for pain. Used to be old school used to prevent FATE events, but research showed it was way less effective than clopidogrel etc.

I’m pretty sure that’s what it was, but it was a while ago so I don’t remember fully. They may have asked for aspirin and I gave them an otc pain med that was labeled for cats. Regardless, like please don’t do this yourself 😭

We've had maybe 1.5ish feet sitting for most of January. We got a TON of snow and the high was like maybe 20F for 2+ weeks so it sat around longer than it usually does.

We're in a heat wave now with highs in the 40s/50s right now so the entire earth is a sludgy muddy mess from all the snow melt ugh. We actually had an air quality warning with this melt.

It has snowed 3 times in Denver this winter. Probably less than a foot in accumulation. It makes my existential dread for climate change worse 🫠

Just had a membrane sweep pls pray I go into labor 😭

GET THAT BABY OUT OF THERE!!!!

I’m really trying. I haven’t felt anything though so I’m not sure it’s gonna work 🥲

Are you stuck at the hospital? If you can go thrifting, it was the right amount of walking to get things going!!

I sincerely hope they listened when I said this was something they needed to go to a vet for and aspirin absolutely was not a replacement
Who knows, but not your fault if this person's first thought was 'My cat's tail is hanging by a thread, let me go to the pet store for pain meds instead of getting it medical attention.' People are truly dumb, and it is unfortunate that companies cater to the stupidity by selling OTC crap.

Tbh I have a lot of feelings working there. I think a lot of the animals sold are unethical to sell (and the accessories aren’t great either, especially for some special critters that have pretty advanced needs) but I just try to do my best with what I know and give the best options I can, including buying somewhere else. I can’t wait to quit, but it was a filler for when I was in between jobs and easy extra cash until school starts (and I do get decent employee discounts lol)

Why the **** is it 70 degrees today

Same here 🥲
My existential dread for the future of the planet is almost matched by my excitement to pull my motorcycle out of winter storage
*Cries in wintery mix that made me cancel my pilates class because my 15 minute drive would have taken over an hour*

Historically (1900-2026 years), 50-70s is not abnormal for the warmest day in Feb for this area. Avg Feb temp is under 35 except for an outlier or two

Climate change is definitely real, but the midwest also just be like this. You can see an upward trend in temps over time, but climate change has far greater impacts on the frequency of severe weather events and disasters. People who have lived in the midwest their entire lives will talk about how the world is ending on an 80 degree day in November, but don't bat an eye at the increased frequency of polar vortexes and tornadoes. Having too much snow is bad too, like the 6 feet of snow Petropavlovsk-Kamchatsky Russia last month. It's all important to consider!

Maybe this will give some people hope: Solar power has become cheaper than coal so countries like China are building unprecedented amounts of solar farms which will eventually decrease carbon emissions. Yes, they are only doing it because it saves money, but it's still good news for the planet. The UK, France, Germany, Japan, Canada, New Zealand, and Chile all plan to be carbon neutral by 2050 and have passed legislation to reach this goal. In November, 145 countries discussed doing the same (China included):

The US is lagging behind, but you can look at the sources of your power locally and switch to more eco providers. 30% of my electricity is from wind and solar in Savoy by default and is projected to increase in the future. There's good things going on too.

30% of my electricity is from wind and solar

My house is 100% solar and powered 90-100% by my solar panels. 😎 My paranoid brain wants a battery for when the data centers screw the entire grid

Also apop that whole thing wasn't directed at you lol. I just went on a passion rant
No worries haha. It's good to keep the silver linings in mind.

My master's thesis was on the spatiostatistical ecology of climate change. My lab used predictive modeling to determine the response of ecosystems (specifically northwestern arid to semi-arid shrublands) under different climate scenarios projecting the next several decades and centuries.
The unfortunate consensus among climate modeling experts, corroborated by studies like mine, is that we're already past the window for more optimistic climate predictions in terms of energy and carbon initiatives. So long as global politics don't implode, we aren't likely facing an apocalypse-level climate catastrophe any century soon, but we are already past being able to return things to normal in any of our lifetimes (if at all). There are some regions that are more sensitive than others and are already past recovery, and some that won't see much impact at all.
The good/bad thing about climate change is that it's a slow burn. Which means we have time to prepare for the changes that we know are coming, but also means that we don't see those changes in front of us until it's too late to do anything, even with the most radical of energy policy changes. Which is to say, every country in the world could right at this moment decide to divert toward renewables tomorrow, but we'll still see the snowball effects of our current energy behavior for a long time.

Anyways the world isn't fully burning (yet) and we'll all be fine (probably)😃

Today’s my birthday which means I got kicked off my parents insurance so now I have to pay $100 for physical therapy every time I go.

I’ve been to PT three times in three years because of vet school.

But on the bright side my cupping set came in so now I can cup my muscles to help make them chill

Pro tip: vet students often qualify for Medicaid

i feel you- i worked at a clinic that had a pet store attached (NOT A CORPORATION! NOT THE BIG ORANGE COMPANY I SWEAR) and i would have to get involved with the pet store and i dealt with a lot of what you’re describing. lots of people coming in wanting a quick fix for fleas and the pet store sold a million BS products and i would have to be like “sooo i know you see an entire end cap of ‘flea products’ but uh. none of this works. you’re gonna need an appointment so you can get prescription prevention”. maybe like 1 out of 5 people would actually listen to me. not fun at all but it was the job that i had at that time sooo. i was happy when i got away.

Speaking of memorizing random neuro mush, anyone got any tips for memorizing the 12 cranial nerves, what they do, if they're efferent, afferent, mixed and where they go in the brain?

some say marry money but my brother says big brains matter more
S= sensory
m= motor
b= both
the rest i just flashcards the **** out of it until it stuck in my brain

Cranial nerve mnemonic is “oh oh oh to touch and feel very good velvet, ah heaven.” Where the first letter is what the nerve name starts with.

“Some say marry money but my brother says big brains matter most” tells you if sensory, motor, or both.

Don’t remember a trick to afferent/efferent, and that info was long dumped from my brain.

The technique used on me to learn neuro facts was just general mocking and disappointment during rounds as an intern. Eventually things stuck. Until I didn’t need them anymore.

I have not started on my new years resolution to start exercising. Feel ugly today but hopefully tomorrow is a new day
Exercising is hard. Having consistency is hard. It helps me to have a coach for accountability- she gives me workouts, and I feel guilty if I skip them

It takes time to build habits and even longer to see results unfortunately. But you can do it! Tomorrow is a new day!

The provincial government gutted our natural resources department today, completely got rid of the wildlife division, is laying off tons of staff and priming the environment for increased exploitation. Basically the end of conservation work in NS. I worked in the wildlife division for 4 years and all of my years of hard work was just tossed away for nothing, plus I will now witness the utter ecological destruction of my homeland for profits. I have never felt so emotionally sick in my life, I truly don't know how to go on. They took everything that mattered from me. Everything.

This is awful. I'm so sorry.

Your work mattered then and it still matters now. No one in any position of power can take that part away. I’m so sorry.

Man, the pressure of practicing medicine knowing the public eye is on you if things don't work out well is...something. Of course clients suck too, I know that first hand, but knowing that an unpreventable outcome means your workplace always gets skewered on social media...

Anyways, if anyone knows a shaman, send them my way. I think I need to cleanse this place lol. We've had like 5 stupid things happen in the last 2 months

Bruhhhhh as a former zookeeper I feel that

Loved getting bomb threats at work after the Cincy gorilla incident 🥲

But also I feel certain exhibits are definitely cursed. Worked in one where like every time I was scheduled there something happened

Good vibes your way!!

I can say that MSU was really sad to hear what happen. It was just an unfortunate accident, but the comments on Facebook are rough.

I’ve also seen TikToks bashing the zoo for the polar bear exhibit because they looked sad because there was no snow in November.

I think I saw a post on the book of faces from one of your coworkers about what you're referencing and I felt so sad. Such a tragedy made worse by the social media stuff. So sorry for you all!

Yeah we are truly devastated. And not to imply that losing any other animal doesn't have this impact, but just the sudden and unpredictable nature of this one. And we really, really tried for her. We called everyone we could. Honestly it's kind of mind boggling that we even had the chance to consider trying given the nature of what happened, but it just wouldn't have been fair to her. @JaynaAli, you might have actually crossed paths with my coworker during your residency?

Also lol @ the polar bear bashers. I see those all the time. They fail to mention that we have what might be the biggest (or at least one of the biggest) polar bear exhibits in the country, if not the world. And that in the wild, there are snow/ice-free periods too (especially these days....).

Anyways goodbye anonymity but yeah, keep us in your thoughts. We are having a really rough few months here

I think a lot of people dislike acknowledging that freak accidents can and do happen because it ruins the illusion that we can prepare for and prevent devastating things.
