in my experience, fly biting/catching/snapping i think is mostly thought to be indicative of some sort of epilepsy/seizure.....if i remember correctly. not a huge fan of neuro stuff to be honest.
If y'all have set up your VIN account, there is a write-up on fly catching

http://www.vin.com/Members/Associate/Associate.plx?from=GetDzInfo&DiseaseId=4199

It appears to be convulsive in some breeds and OCD in others (based on my quick scan).

They put Lennox down this morning 🙁 BSL sucks.

Dr. Google, for whatever he's worth, suggests fly catching is either seizure activity or an obsessive compulsive issue.

Family Boston is pretty much OCD. She fly catches and she doesn't know when to stop playing. When we had a trampoline she would bounce underneath it. She also would attack people (not viciously) when they got on it. I love her all the same. This is the same dog who will got pick citrus off the trees in the backyard and peel them and eat them if she gets hungry, like when we cut her food back to 1/2 twice a day. 🙄

OMG I LOVE FRENCHIES AND THEIR LITTLE NOSES AND CURLY Q TAILS!!!!!! 😍😍😍

we just had a frenchie come in the ER for suspected pneumonia. she was the lightest cream color and her name was simone and she was a tiny 15 pounds!!!!! soooooooooooo cute. and pug puppies get me every time.

and bostons.

apparently i really like the smush face dogs 😀

It's all about the Bostons.

Okay, so in sad, depressing times I completely resort to humor, and I of course had to post this as it is a rant but somehow I am finding it morbidly funny - my grandma (who is dying for those that don't know) is literally having #whitegirlproblems

My grandpa needs to have a list and get tasks done as we are in the final days of my grandma's life. So he decides we need to go pick out the plot of land to bury her in. Alright, I get that. I can get on board. Let's DO this.

We find a nice little cemetery, all perfect and what not and sit down with the director or whatever you call an owner of a cemetery and tell him what we want. "Well," he says, "I got one problem, see, we just might be all out of the white people plots in the cemetery, but I got some nice spaces open in the black part of the cemetery." 😱:smack:

......:whoa:

Hmm, okay. Sooo your white people lot is full? Didn't know that a cemetery HAD to be segregated in this day in age. Nice reminder that I do in fact live in the south.

Well, we ended up being able to get a plot in the white cemetery (he thought we were looking for two, but no, the grandparents are both going to be cremated so grandpa can share her space when the time comes :lame:) We also learned that it is just "historical" and that is how it's always been, but whatever, I still don't get it.

GAH!

Katie8 - I'm sorry to hear about your grandma, but that is ridiculous.

In other news I had a question regarding health insurance and residency. I emailed the school and asked. In reply I got: it is one of the factors that they'll look at, but it in itself won't matter. However, I still don't know whether it'd be okay for me to stay on my parents' insurance or not. With the healthcare bill I can even if I'm not financially dependent, but I don't know if the state will see it that way. I would rather not pay $1400 this year for health insurance through the school, but otherwise I might be giving up another year of residency. I'll have everything else for residency. We're going to insure our cars, get driver's licenses, register to vote, hubby's looking for a job. We pay rent and utilities, I'm taking out a ton of loans, not going to get any money from the parents. I just don't want that to be the one things that costs me resident tuition.

In my hometown we have a white cemetery and a black cemetery. It's not a requirement or anything and you could be buried in either one if you wanted. It is that way now because of tradition. Most people want to be buried with their families so if your family way back when we had segregation was white, then you would be buried in the white cemetery and vice versa.

Where would you put Michael Jackson?

How bout really tanned people?

SMH.

 Like I said, in my hometown people can be buried in either one if they wanted to. Most just want to be buried with their families. We did have segregation back in the day. It's just not by law anymore, but by people's personal preferences when they die.

I just bit the same place on my lip twice. There are now two cuts right next to each other. Stupid sharp teeth.

The process of buying a new saddle for the horse who has suddenly decided "oh just kidding, this old thing? Totally doesn't fit!" goes something like this:
-Try 900 saddles
-Discover that the only things that work cost $4k
-Cry

Try contacting NCSU's law services (here) for more specific advice on that matter. I'm in-state, so don't really know anything myself, but they can help you through the process and should be able to answer the question.

So remember that plan that's not going to happen about my boyfriend coming to visit me in Ireland? Well, I assumed it wasn't going to happen. Apparently he'd been assuming it would happen, and just had been too lazy to set it up yet, so he brings it up today. There's lots of reasons it shouldn't happen (like the fact that I'd have to end my internship a week earlier than I'd said I would and where would we stay and what would we even be doing and what to do with all my stuff...) but I'm fairly certain I could make it work if I tried hard enough. And he was upset when I told him it wouldn't happen, so that makes me feel bad. But it would be really inconvenient to make it work...but when I say no, I'm worried it sounds like I'm saying I don't want to see him before school, which totally isn't true! Augh, I don't know what to do...

I almost just told my bf he should just leave for Mexico right now. He's driving me nuts right now. Just the way he talks to me, makes fun of some of my stuff, etc. I don't know what's going on right now.

And he said he'd take care of the puppy today, so I told my friend she wouldn't need to come over. He let her out twice in the 10 hours I was gone. And got mad that she peed and pooped on the carpet right when he let her out I the crate. Well yea! She's a puppy and can't hold it that long yet! And I don't think she got any water at all until I came back from work. Grrrr.

🙁 Poor Ivy.
My douchecanoe ex-BF let our dog outside into our fenced in yard once and then fell asleep. (I was at work). The neighbors two dogs had animal control called on them and when they came to investigate they saw my dog outside without water. So they knocked on the door and he told them it was MY dog and so they wrote me a citation for animal neglect. I FREAKED out on him when I got home and called the officer on the ticket and cried hysterically bc I thought it was going to prevent me from going to vet school one day. 🙄
I wanted to kill him for putting that on me when I wasn't even there! 😡😡

AHhhhh. Why the eff did I do this to myself??? I was supposed to go visit my ex, who I honestly considered to be a good friend and all this weekend. Well, he tried to pick up a girl last weekend, which was fine and I told him I just don't want to hear about these things yet since we've only been broken up for about 2 months. Well, he's been quiet this whole week and I figured he was kind of seeing this girl and he goes ahead and lies about it just saying he's been busy. Just sent me a bunch of texts being like, "well, i've been busy cause i've been hanging out with this girl and you were going to find out anyways, blah blah blah."

I'm so pissed at him and myself. He's known for like a month that I was going to come visit and he pulls this s***. And he's always been like drunk calling and texting and being like I wish I could see you and ahhhh. I just want to punch him.

And I know I did this to myself, but just let me be pissed.

🙁 Why?

We just constantly disagree right now. I don't know why.

He complains that I don't care about the things he likes. Yea, I don't care much about cars, but I still sit there for hours and listen to him talk about it.

But I can't talk about training a guide dog or things I learn at work because he doesn't care about it. At least I listen to his stuff because I know he likes to tell me about them.

I don't know. I just have a hard time accepting the fact that he's gonna be gone soon and I don't know when or if I'll see him again. And it's so hard to see him be so excited about leaving. I can understand it but still..

Anyone else getting paid $13.78/hour to pick up giant rocks out of a giant field?

Who hires 4 lab girls and 1 lazy guy to do manual labour?!

I hate my job.

I had asked to stay on in the fall, but that is unlikely. PI mismanaged his funds and probably cannot afford to keep me. Also, I do not want to be the only one taking care of 4000 apple trees. PI may be a genius when it comes to genetics, but an idiot when it comes to common sense.

Also, please stop joking around about firing us. And stop mentioning that we are disposable. Also, I would love to take as much vacation time as I want, but I have the most debt of all of the summer students. No thanks. It is not my problem that you could not afford to hire 5 summer students... and hired them.

Other job prospects are not looking to hot.

The boyfriend is moving to a city where it is difficult to get even a minimum wage job.

Nobody wants someone with a BSc in Biology.

I am so stressed. And dirty. I was so dirty yesterday that they told me to not even bother staying late. I guess I looked like I worked hard.

 I'm sorry to be laughing but your rants about work always crack me up.

Yeah, well, I got in from the field yesterday just coated in dirt.
First thing my lab manager says, "Have you seen your face?!?!"
I was coated head to toe in dirt.
When I went to dust off my tank top, a little cloud of dust came up.
When I took my socks off, little atomic bomb-shaped clouds of dust came off my feet.
I laughed. And laughed. And laughed.
Then I went home, hopped in the shower, and fell asleep because I was exhausted. 😴

Had a hard time falling asleep last night... Didn't fall asleep until around 2AM.... It is now 6AM and the people that are replacing the shingles on my parents roof are here at 6 feckin o'clock.... Making so much noise, walking back and fourth past my bedroom window... I just want to get some good sleep go away until 8AM like most normal people.

Yeah, uh, Devyn... you wanna go up north and kick some fecking arse for us?!😡🙁

I would like to, but at the same point I would like people to be responsible....I mean it was clear Lennox had pit bull in him... and they knew it and they had him in an area with BSL... then when they got called out for it they tried to say he was not a pit bull at all to try and save him.... which I understand from the point of trying to save your dog, but the real issue here is not - my dog is not a pit bull he is not dangerous, but my dog is a pit bull and pit bulls are not dangerous - the laws are stupid and we need to fight against them.... not lie about the breed of the dog. They should never have had Lennox up there in the first place... I would have never moved to the Republic of Ireland if my pit bull Rain was not allowed here..... if the veterinary school was in Northern Ireland/UK I would not have gone. It is called being responsible.

Sorry.... ugh..... you put your dog in danger by not paying attention or being aware of the laws or ignoring the laws... and then the dog suffers the ultimate price...

if you want to fight BSL - do it, but don't do it with your dog in the BSL area! and they weren't even fighting BSL they were calling their dog not a pit bull.... I feel horrible for them - they seem like really good people who cared immensely for their dog, but were just horribly unaware or just did not understand the consequences.

I agree 100% with everything you said. I remember scratching my head when they said he wasn't a pit. And you're right, the law is the law (which needs to be the focus of the change).

I don't know how accurate it was but both stories I read yesterday said there was DNA testing that showed he was lad am bulldog? Guessing that wasn't true? 😕

I thought those tests could only tell parentage to a certain percent. I had a friend with a big dog and the dog came back as having Chi in it.

So remember how I got laid off/fired totally out of the blue a few months ago? The practice owner (who was having the firing conversation with me alongside the manager) apparently doesn't remember...
Last week on Monday she asked me if I was working in the vet hospital or in wildlife (they are connected).
That Wed she starts asking if I have enough ours in wildlife because they "really miss" me.
And then she sits me down earlier this week to ask me about my future plans... We've talked about me going to vet school like 6 times. It's not like she never sees me and has forgotten who I am. I see her at least 3 times a week. I just really can't believe the comments about me not working there. I think she just thinks I'm working in wildlife for the summer and that's the only reason I'm not working for the hospital...

DNA testing is not accurate at all... if you are talking about the tests where you submit your dogs cheek swabs or blood, etc.... those breed tests are ****e.... now if you did a DNA test to check for actual parentage against actual dogs then that would be much more accurate, but if you are just sending it in to say "oh I wonder what is in my dog" - you are wasting your money....

Ah. I don't have any experience with them so I want sure.

Yep. We always tried to sway people away from them bc it's a huge waste of money... and um... it's really annoying to explain to people when their dog comes back with 23 different breeds on it 🙄

Have you ever done one on a known purebred? I wonder what would come back then.

The thing is, a mastiff/lab mix really looks like a pit bull. So should people not be allowed to own mastiff/lab mixes in Northern Ireland?

Yes, it's stupid to own a dog that's not allowed by your landlord or your city or your country, and BSL is stupid in the first place. But it's entirely another thing for a dog that is owned by responsible people, and properly licensed for 5 years, to be killed for being a pit bull where there is evidence to the contrary and because someone said so. You can say almost any short haired large breed dog looks like a pit bull - doesn't mean it's true.

They aren't meant to be accurate for purebreds, and that's actually clearly stated in the published research about them and also on their client websites. They do not lie about this. This is because the algorithm they use to analyze the data is meant to group the markers and spit out a percentage.

A better test would be to do one on a known designer mutt doodlecock dogthing.

Yes but that is the whole point... BSL is stupid and does not work.... it does not stop dog attacks from occurring as any breed of dog can attack... we need dog laws targeting dog owners not breeds of dogs..... irresponsible dog owners cause dog attacks to occur not the dogs themselves... really

The whole point is the people enforcing BSL cannot tell the difference between different breeds of dogs and their opinion is that any medium sized dog with short hair, and a square head is a pit bull... it is completely false, but that is what they go off of. They do not use DNA tests as they are unreliable (****e we had a purebred AmStaff come back as a Border Collie).... they go off of sight which really is just as unreliable but they don't care.

I hear what you are saying, but responsible people are punished every day for owning pit bulls or dogs that resemble pit bulls and it fecking sucks... that is why you have to be aware of the laws where you live... cause you can get screwed over. Not sure if you remember the pit bull witch hunt in CO a few years back where they went pretty much door to door and took people's dogs away from them and euthanized them.... there are many places in the states pit bulls are banned... and your dog can be taken away on sight or you have a certain amount of time to move it out of the city. In the UK, if someone calls you out they just take your dog...that's it.

doodlecock :meanie:

Small rant: I'm frickin exhausted lol. Now that I have been studying 15 hours a day for the last 6 days and my exam time adrenaline rush is gone, I just want to curl up and take a nap for 3 days. Unfortunately I have to work until 11 tonight 😴

Still happy it's over so I shouldn't really complain 😎

I think we're on the same page 🙂

And for nyanko:

soooooooooooooooooo called financial aid office yesterday. they supposedly schedule me for a 10am phone appointment today, call me back yesterday saying that they double booked me for FRIDAY. then they reschedule me for 10:30am today, oh but i call because no one has called me by 11am, and find out that they booked me for NEXT thursday and the person i was supposed to talk to today is on PTO till then!!!!!

so then they transfer me to someone else, who does their best to help me, but in the end, the loan office is going to have to email me back in regards to my financial aid.

SERIOUSLY?!!!!! :boom:

really getting on my nerves right now.

We've had plenty of AKC registered labs come back with chow and other breeds.

Yep. We always tried to sway people away from them bc it's a huge waste of money... and um... it's really annoying to explain to people when their dog comes back with 23 different breeds on it 🙄

Pretty much disagree with these kinds of comments. The tests are not ****, but yes they are not 100% accurate, they don't claim to be.

The anecdotal evidence that they are inaccurate is deceiving because:
1) It depends on when the test was done. The tests 5 years ago were not as accurate as the tests today.
2) There are differences among some companies, but I know the most about MARS wisdom panel. They have like 90%+ (i don't remember the exact number -- it is not published) accuracy for one generation, less if they have to go back 2 generations to get breeds. By 3 generations they say the results are virtually useless. So if you remember so many "inaccurate" results, ask yourself was it 1 out of 50 you sent out or was it 20 out of 50 etc.
3) Pure breeds can give inaccurate results, and MARS at least does not claim their test is for pure breed accuracy determination.

If your life depended on knowing the breed 100% accurate, then sure, avoid it. But understanding the limitations, I think it is still pretty good.

And yeah, some people get crappy results because the picture is too muddled. But that is information about the dog as well.

That's sort of fluffy. Thanks for the read though!

I know... I was hoping it would be a little more official since it is from VIN and all. I did find it helpful that there were some known breed mixes being tested which isn't something you run across very often.
