RANT HERE thread

I have lots of friends who have big dogs near UNL (where I'd go for two years if I got into IA) and then I have a friend who has two cats, a snake, and a rabbit in an apt out there. I mean I guess it's doable. I just have to work harder to find a place to live.

From my perspective, I knew what I needed, and if they didn't offer it, I moved onto the next place. It may take a little more time, but there are definitely places. My first criteria was large dogs, and then went from there. You will probably have a MUCH easier time!
BUT... that's not me trying to sway you either way

Apparently I didn't do a good job cleaning/sanitizing the stalls at work and need to do it again. I wasn't thinking much when I did it because I was thinking about the talk my bf and I had in the morning about him leaving. I know it's not a big deal, but I still hate that it distracted me so much that I'm not doing my job right.

My mom just called me back and I was saying that I could get the dog and if I was careful there was literally no way she'd know since it doesn't make any noise. I think I'm just being silly though and I told myself not to make any rash decisions while I was still grieving over Mickey.

I say take her....... Unlike Em I just want to yank people to the dark side.......

And that's interesting. It makes sense. I knew you shouldn't breed 2 dapple dachshunds for the same reason. Same thing really.

I found a place that waves the rent for adopted pets so I chose there (and it was only half a mile from the school). 😀

That is such a cool policy. Good for them for doing that!

Not sure how they verify every animal, but love the thought behind it!

So Mickey has been gone a little over week but it feels like forever. I work with dogs at an animal shelter and have been trying not to fall in love with any of them since then. A few days ago three Australian Shepherd puppies came in and one was all white with crystal blue eyes. Since her sister was a merle and she also has a smaller eye everyone assumed that she's deaf (she is). I thought they'd put her down or in foster care but no they just put her straight into adopt without even mentioning that she's deaf. Now I'm seriously considering driving the half hour to work to adopt a deaf eight week old puppy. Someone needs to remind how stupid an idea this is when I have two insane cats and I'm not certain what will happen in the next year (will I actually get into vet school?).

Sounds like she is a "lethal white" aussie.... friggin BYB and their need to breed 2 merle aussies together... FECKERS!!!! sorry.... but then out comes these lethal whites with a predisposition to deafness and blindness and the breeders just dump them or kill them... not cool... just so they can make an extra buck by ensuring they get merle dogs...

I fostered a lethal white aussie puppy a few years back - she was both blind and deaf... she could only see shadows - she was one really cool dog... she had no idea she had any disability at all. Have they tested the puppies eyes? The fact that one of her eyes is smaller could mean she has vision issues in at least one of her eyes.. just a heads up.

If you are up to the challenge I say go for it... not many people are willing to take on a deaf dog and if the shelter is not telling people she is deaf there is a good chance she will be adopted and then returned.

Oh and if you decide to and what more info on lethal whites let me know!

Yeah I literally gave up a W/D in another apartment because it made me want to give this apartment my money instead. 👍 I have to give them paperwork from the shelter/adoption agencies. The only thing that sucks is that I rescued my cat from a trash can, and trash can's don't offer proofs of purchase 🙄.

Trying to purchase a parking permit that went on sale today. First notice says that all the permits are sold out for my area after 30 minutes. Then it says I don't have enough credits to buy one, which as a grad student I was told wouldn't matter. Then I call them and they turned off the site to try and fix the problem. Thing is I already waited online for nearly an hour trying to figure this out.

Just kick em in the nuts. (I'm rather feisty today sorry)

Ugh I really need to find a new vet in this town. Just spent an hour waiting to see the doctor. Doctor comes in for five freaking minutes, does a half-assed PE, tries to get a fecal but fails because she has already pooped everything out today apparently. Doctor figures she just has stress colitis and decides to send us home with metronidazole, panacur, and i/d. It's not like they were busy. No freaking way we should have had to wait that long for such a sh*tty exam. It really reinforced my thinking about how to practice good medicine (ie not like this guy) and how I want to run a practice when I own one.

hedgie: If you have any questions or concerns about owning a deaf dog, please don't hesitate to ask. I have a Nova Scotia Duck Tolling Retriever with bilateral congenital sensorineural deafness and honestly it doesn't slow her down at all. She's more affected by her other neurologic issues than she is by being deaf, definitely.

And the worst part about people crossing two merles is that it doesn't even produce a higher percentage of normal merle offspring than if you cross a merle and a non-merle - both will produce 50% normal merle offspring and the only difference is that 25% of the merle-merle cross offspring will also have excessive white markings associated with hearing, vision and sometimes other neurologic problems.

Thanks nyanko. I'll pm you.

Left the zoo early today because crap my hip is hurting. I think I need to have it seen because it feels like it's been trying to pop out which it hasn't done in YEARS!!!

Are you my SI dysfunction twin? 🙂

LOL You are way tougher than me!

I dislocated it in high school and every once in a while it starts to ache and feels like it needs to pop really bad. It used to pop out of joint but hasn't done it in a long time but I have been pushing my body pretty hard lately.

Oh boo that sucks 🙁. I'm not sure if this would help you or not, but I have a hip stabilizing belt that I bought that helps keep mine in place. I look like a granny with it, but it helps some.😳 It's meant to stabilize the hip girdle. It's called an Active SI Belt, its about $40 if you're interested.

I hate that -always about to pop out- feeling.
Hope you feel better.

Can you use it exercising and can it get wet?

Hedgie:

Something else to consider when apartment/house hunting for vet school, when they say they have pet 'restrictions' makes sure you mention you are a veterinary student. I know some places will wave the restrictions when they hear that. They assume you will be a responsible pet owner. 😀

The more active I plan to be, the more often I wear it. In fact, I can't exercise without it. It is made of neoprene, so I don't see why you couldn't get it wet. It's velcro and a buckle...

Oh that looks awesome! I ask about getting wet because I am buying a 10 pack for paddle boarding and I am going boogie boarding a lot

Very true. I also threw out to one place that they were turning a guaranteed 4 years of guaranteed grad loan rent because my dog was 10 lbs too heavy and they changed their tune pretty quickly 😀. A lot of places will let you have bigger dogs if you live on the 1st floor.
And then there was the one lady that told me "bigger dogs give off more heat" 🙄

Good point that I think a lot of math challenged people don't get.

I was reading some papers discussing how to eliminate undesirable autosomal recessive traits in a line in the easiest and cheapest manner and thought of you.

I think it is getting popular to only test one sex, and only breed that sex if they are not carriers. This way you test only 1/2 the time saving money, generally won't have the disease expressed, and breeders can keep their precious bloodlines going. And usually the male is the one tested, since breeders usually keep more females, they test even less.

I need to learn a lot more, but thought that was a good marriage of saving money, smart genetics, and dealing with reality.

I mean it's not a miracle worker, but it really helps especially when I feel that about to slip out pain. I really don't see why it couldn't get wet (besides the velcro which will dry). It was the best $40 I've spent in a LONG time! :luck:

Sadly I know that not to be true. It is appalling how irresponsible a number of vet students are as pet owners.

I feel like dogs here are maybe less well behaved than the average I have encountered. IMO, part of the problem is not enough time to work with their pets intersecting with the strong desire of a lot of students to have pets FINALLY for their own. But still. Maybe behavior class should be required 1st quarter 1st year.

Maybe because I'm not "young" but I have had pets of my own for a while. And I will NOT have a misbehaving dog. That blows my mind.

Ugh your story was TERRIBLE! This is true, but a lot of the apartment complexes still consider them to be better owners 🙄. At least in my experience from calling around this year.

I was at the vet's office last week and was sitting in the waiting room with the epitome of an owner with -oh look at that cute yellow lab let me buy it for my three kids that I brought with me to the vet's office, let it grow to 135 at the age of 2, and have it torment the whole waiting room because it doesn't know the word SIT!- syndrome. 😡

Yeah, that and people refusing to supervise their dogs at happy hour + bringing dog-aggressive dogs to happy hour = dog fights at happy hour. Or the girl that brought her human-aggressive dog to class and it bit the professor. I know some vet students that are wonderful owners but only maybe 1 that I trusted with my well behaved on leash but dog-aggressive dog (who did NOT come to happy hour).

People actually look at me like I'm a psychotic bitch when I bark (no not BARKING, just stern) at my dog because she is doing something she's not supposed to and didn't listen the first time when I said it nicer.

My dog is obviously abused. I'm sure you've seen how timid and scared she is in the pictures I've posted....... And she is very hand shy (NOT!!!)

Oh I know! Even my bf yells at me about it. But he will say, "Ollie, come." and when she doesn't he just forgets about it. NO! Make the damn dog come to you! My other pup needs direction SO badly and I have seen people look at me the same way because I am stern with him. 🙄

I have been gone all morning attempting to sell my car...

I have a 2005 Hyundai Accent, silver, 4 door, 57,500 miles, no rips or tears on any of the interior. No cracks or dings in the windshield. In excellent condition with the exception of needing the breaks replaced (it is 7 years old and the breaks just started squealing a few weeks ago.) The girl who was interested in buying my car took it up to her uncle who is a mechanic and owns the shop. She says afterwards that because the breaks and struts need to be replaced she is not sure she wants to spend $6,000 on it plus put money in for ALL those repairs... HUH? That is normal for breaks and shocks to need to be replaced on cars and her uncle OWNS and is a mechanic at an auto repair shop so its not like she is going to be paying out a whole **** ton of money to get those repaired. I asked, well, is there anything else that needs to be repaired... No. Everything else looked really good...

Ok.. the car on Blue Book is worth $6800 at the high end and just under $6000 at the low end... the car has low miles and other than needing routine maintenance that most cars will usually need at some point, it is in excellent condition. I was selling it for $6400 and said I would not go lower than $6000 (she wanted $5500 range.. HELL NO!)....That is a really good deal, so why are you complaining that the car has "A whole lot of repairs to be done." Seriously... so frustrated... I need to sell this car without being ripped off on the price.

Off to get some lunch now....

Buying/selling cars is so stressful... can you get the brakes done yourself and sell it to her for 6400?

I do not enjoy working with my ex. He has been gone for the past couple of weeks and it has been so nice! He came back today and the first words he said to me were telling me what to do. We generally work well together, but when he does stuff like that it really bugs me. He wasn't even on the clock either! just thought that he needed to tell me what to do I guess. totally ruined my good mood... I am planning on going shopping today though, so maybe I will feel better after that! 🙂

Took my mom to go meet the puppy. It was in a get acquainted room. If we had gotten there ten minutes earlier I'd be sitting with an adorable little puppy right now. They didn't tell its new owners that it's deaf. I'm imagining she'll be returned in a month. My mom gives it a week. My mom agreed if/when Mouse comes back to the shelter we'll have a serious conversation about bringing her home (ie we'll adopt her). I've seen dogs returned for so much less. They adopted it because they thought it'd be a cute pet for their 9 year old.

This person obviously has never had a Chi sit in their lap. My little dog heats up and I swear she gives off more heat than a large dog. I've heard something about them once being bred for warming the Aztec beds. It could be totally wrong, but I'd believe it.

I might fall into this class. I'm trying to be a good owner now though. However, I did get my Chi when I was 9, and dog training seemed so different back then. The only place my dog is even mostly friendly is at used bookstores. Weird right? She isn't destructive though and she's completely house trained. The only accident she had recently was because she had a UTI. 🙁

One of my family's dogs is just pathetic at the vet. He cries the entire time. And he wants to be held (this is a 30 lbs Boston). He also totally shakes. Probably the worst waiting room patient I've ever seen. He's been this way since we got him neutered.

My goal is to have a well trained dog/people friendly dog for my next one. It's hard with a 12 year old Chi with big-dog-syndrome.

🙁 so sorry to hear this. And I'm more sorry that the shelter is so irresponsible about it. It really makes me angry. They of all people know what the affects of adopting out a dog like that has. Poor pup 🙁. I hope they bring it back really soon so you can take good care of her :xf:

My dog is TERRIFIED and shakes like crazy and pants non-stop, but she is controlled by me, and I'm sure you at least TRY to control your dog. This lady had her insanely fat dog running around growling at other dogs, trying to jump on people's laps, and talking to the lady next to me about how she wants a bulldog just like hers for her next dog 🙄🙄🙄.
I know some dogs aren't well-behaved in every situation (my dog heels until we get within a mile of the dog park and then she walks me the rest of the way), but I'm sure you at least try. This lady was completely oblivious. I wanted to hit her.

Definitely. I can't feel my arms by the end of the appointment.

My Chi is terrified of the rain. Turns out she really is a desert dog. It's rained three times in Raleigh since we got here on Friday. I hate that she panics so much. 🙁 I hope she gets used to it. :xf:

I'm really irritated with our zoo at the moment. I took pictures for them for an event about three weeks ago, and was totally not given any information on what they wanted for pictures, what time to meet, where the event was... anything. The only reason I even got there on time and to the right location was that I had a friend who worked for the camp.

So anyway, after editing them, I posted the pictures on facebook, tagging a couple of the vet students and workers I know there. Nobody said anything. Fast-forward two weeks, and when I go to volunteer at the wildlife rehab that I usually do, I get pulled aside and asked to take them down and apologies for the disorganized fashion that the shooting was set up in, where nobody had told me I wasn't supposed to put them online. I asked if it was okay if I set the privacy settings really tight instead, and got a thumbs up on that.

Woke up today after a nap to a voicemail from the volunteer coordinator stating that the woman who had pulled me aside was incorrect, and I needed to completely pull the album. Well, that's fine. I'm OK with being asked not to put photos on social media.

But what really ground my gears was that she said something to the tune of "we just need you to understand that those photos are the property of the zoo." No. No they aren't, actually, unless I explicitly agreed to that in writing. I went back and scrounged through my volunteer documents, and they don't even mention social media, and definitely don't have any writing stating that I give up my de facto copyright by photographing for them. The main zoo website also does not have any sort of information of the sort.

Grrrrr. I don't want to seem like a pain in the ass or rude for bringing that up, but I've spent a lot of time and money working on my photography, and hearing that kind of made me want to punch her through the phone.

That's ridiculous. I mean if they aren't offensive, if you say where they're from then really you should be fine. I guess it's a little different if they are taken when you are volunteering, however you took them. That's be like them saying no one can take photos at the zoo and post them ever. Which would probably hurt them in the long run.

I mean, no, I'm totally ok with them not wanting them on social media because they do show some behind the scenes stuff - all of buildings (office and veterinary) which is rather tame, but whatever. It's just they didn't say anything about not posting them, no documents I received said anything about that, and on top of that to tell me they own my photographs? no. I sent a nicely worded email saying I took them down, but I actually do own them, not the zoo. I was just pretty floored to hear her say that so nonchalantly on the voicemail.

Well I work at that shelter so...I don't think it was an intentional thing. We've had so many dogs lately that it might have just been overlooked. Puppies came in over the weekend when no vet could check them over then were scheduled for early spay/neuters. They are walked down by someone, put under anesthia by someone else, spayed by the vets, moved to new kennels by a totally different person, then a volunteer who literally just met them talked about them to potential adopters. I'd like to think it was just an oversight or maybe they checked the dog over and it wasn't really deaf. Genetic background of siblings and my own experience with her led me to believe she was deaf though.
