For what it's worth, my dog has degenerative disk disease and I have him on a fatty acid joint supplement. He's typically stiff and slightly painful with bad flare ups but the supplement has seemed to help him out a lot. I'm not sure if they make something similar for humans?

I'm sure there is an expensive supplement with a brand name. But taking Glucosamine and Fish Oil pills are the same thing. 😉 And I do take those, too. Forgot to say that. Great combination for arthritic joints!

Yeah, he gets EFAC by Hope Science Vet. It's awesome stuff!! There has to be a human equivalent ...

No, it is not the same thing. Two different substances that both help with joint pain and inflammation.

I have not thought about taking either one of them, I probably couldn't do the fish oils simply because I have heard they have a fishy after taste and any type of fishy taste makes me sick. I could try the glucosamine maybe that combined with the ibuprofen will work.

The fishy after taste/burps really is dependent on the fish oil you take. If you take a high quality fish oil that hasn't oxidized you won't get the fishy burps. I take Nordic Naturals brand ... One with breakfast and one with dinner and I never get fishy burps! One of my good friends, who's a dietician, takes her fish oil right before bed so she doesn't even have to worry about fishy burps 🙂

I think WS meant that taking plain glucosamine + fish oil is about the same as taking a name brand supplement.

Side note... Since supplements aren't regulated by the FDA there is going to be huge variety in quality and bioavailability. Also look up the STRIDE study if you want a good read about supplement efficacy (or not efficacy!).

Not sure what the cause of your joint pain is though, because that will determine whether glucosamine is helpful or not. It doesn't do jack shiz for me and I stopped taking it because it's pretty darn expensive. Worth a try if you have the money, but staying on it continuously (which you have to do) gets really expensive. I used to wait until I found some buy one get one free 😎

My dietician friend said to always get supplements that are 3rd party purity tested (will say on the bottle). Essentially that means they've been tested by an outside company for their quality ... Making sure they have what they say they have, etc.

I'm not sure what the cause of the pain is either, I have an idea of what it is but I don't knew for sure.

I definitely could have misread that, my bad... 😳

And that is what I am thinking it is. 🙁

I remember you mentioning you have family members with the same thing you have. Do you not want to know what's wrong because you don't want to go on meds (side effects) or are there other reasons?

Side effects of meds is one reason. It isn't not wanting to know what it is that is the problem as much as it is having to fight to even get a diagnosis or to even get an appropriate diagnostic test run. I have been brushed off and ignored by doctors many times, the rheumatologist I had seen even told me that he thought there was nothing wrong and that the blood tests ( both times I had it run) were lab errors. :wtf:

I totally used a double negative above but this what happens at 4AM..

I go through the same thing. It's very frustrating. All I can say is you have to be your own advocate and really push on doctors when you know something is wrong. :xf:

I'm just not very good at this, not to mention that I am the worst advocate for myself... 😳

I had every test under the sun come back normal so I was labelled crazy. They would give me sedatives following flare ups and tell me to go home and sleep it off, no joke. Turns out my issue wasn't even related to the specialist I saw or the tests he ran ... Finally got answers when I went to the right specialist! No joke, she knew almost instantly what it was.

It takes perseverance and we all know you are not lacking in that department!! 🙂

It is chronic. The pain is mainly in my wrists, knees and elbows but every joint is sore.

That's what my problem is but switch the elbows with the hips. Elbows never really hurt, but the hips are my biggest problem. Not sure what it is from, maybe from the scoliosis? It's a stinging pain that makes me limb really bad and it's very random. It'll start for no reason and after a few minutes it's usually gone again. Very annoying.

I had a really bad flare up with my back while I was in Germany one time. Almost missed my flight back to the states because I couldn't sit/stand/walk and was in bed for days. Went to the doctor, he checked my back and said it wasn't bad enough to do anything about it. 😡

You sound like the other half of my non existent joint health
Ever been checked out for sacroiliac dysfunction? I have it and it's miserable. It doesn't have anything to do with my scoliosis necessarily but it makes me feel like my hips are out of place and when they go back in place they feel fine. I have to wear this old lady looking orthopedic belt 😳 You could also be pinching a nerve randomly (which happens with sacroiliac dysfunction as well).

It doesn't really feel like anything is out of place. Just like someone is stabbing me repeatedly in the joints with something like this:

 🙄

I got a coupon for an exam and x-rays for $25 for a chiropractor close to here that many people that I know go to. Should I take it and just see what comes out of it?

I can't get any relief from this joint pain today... I have taken 800mg of Ibuprofen in the last 3 hours and I have tried the whole hot shower thing but nothing is working and I am starting to run out of ideas for how to get some relief. 🙁

As someone who is in constant joint pain, I completely empathize with you. There is not much that works for me either, so unfortunately I have little advice for you. Is it acute or chronic? Sometimes a heating pad works for me depending on where it is. Feel better 🙁

You both have my deepest sympathies. 🙁 Chronic pain sucks. Have either of you tired water therapy? I know it sounds hokey, and may not be your answer given possible deeper issues, but I've always benefited from water even if it's just sitting in a hot tub for a while. And now that my arthritis has spread into my neck, shoulder and back, I'm learning to appreciate it even more. Sure, I still ache on land; but when I'm in the water things always feel better. Good luck!!!

The only cardio I can do is swimming. I was a swimmer in high school after I had to quit soccer from the pain so I 😍 swimming. But unfortunately it doesn't help the pain, just allows me to exercise without it for an hour or so. I jump into the hot tub after I swim for a while though 🙂
(Thank goodness for university gyms)

And yes, chronic pain takes a toll on you mentally too. It makes you feel a little crazy.

Yeah, I can't begin to imagine how hard it is. I'm very fortunate that my chronic pain is at a low enough level that doesn't effect my day to day activities and only bugs me when I overdue things due to work or my own stupidity. But, having a mother with chronic pain and two close friends with fibromyalgia, I've sadly seen what it can do to both a person's physical and mental well being. It just sucks. 🙁

I'm delighted the pool can bring you some relief even if it's short lived!! And I WISH the university I worked for had a hot tub - I would just stick my legs in for 20 minutes a day. Oddly enough they have a sauna though. However, saunas :scared: the living daylights out of me!!

I hate saunas... they just make me choke for air and I really don't understand why you would want to sweat on purpose 🙄

I like the ones with the fog. When I was still in Germany, the pool park (not sure what to call it.. haha) had a foggy sauna. I really liked the "flavors" they had and it helped when I wasn't feeling well.

Vet's office never called so I drove over to ensure I caught someone before they closed simply to get some food in hopes my cat wouldn't barf up the rx diet. Found out they didn't call because both the regular vets are out of the office and the fill-in doc was at a total loss as to what to do for my girl. So... Picked up some rx diet went to the grocery store to get a few other easy to digest things for her and came home to find out that she managed to keep down the last thing I fed her but it came out the other end only partially digested - all over the rug along with some other fun deposits.

So, here I sit on yet another exciting Saturday night watching over my poor kitty. Thought there would be a bright spot as I was all jazzed to try some of the Trop50 peach with tea blend that I picked up today. Opened it up, took a swing and found out that the best buy date was back on the 6th. :annoyed:

Well, at least the Yanks manged to pull it out in 14...

Yuck. Went to lunch with coworkers today and 45 minutes after eating I started to feel horrible. So horrible that I actually left work 2 hours before closing ... I felt bad for leaving them because we were sorta busy with 2 very ill patients. Took a zofran, had it come out both ends, took a nap and now I feel fine post-nap, just a slight headache. Weird but glad it was short lived.

What happens in this situation if I had been a vet and had appointments????

We've had situations in which the vet get sick and has to go home. We are a multi doctor practice (7 between 2 hospitals), so we can ask one of the other vets to come in, or move all of the appointments.

Glad you feel better! I hate stomach pain and I get cramps almost every night.

It was definitely something I ate. I felt completely fine until 45 minutes after I ate lunch. I'm playing it safe and eating easy-to-digest foods tonight. Whatever it was my body wanted it OUT! 🙁

We are not a multi vet practice. (well we kind of are now. We have a part time vet) We reschedule, call in a relief vet/the part time vet, or in a couple of instances, the techs did more work and the vet made a bed on the floor of her office and laid down and only put on a "happy" face when she went into rooms as briefly as possible.

I hate ruptured ovarian cysts so much. I just want to curl up into a little ball and sleep until the pain goes away but instead I'm getting up at 5:30 to go to work. Hopefully today goes by quickly and uneventfully with no more puking from the pain.

I hope the day goes by quickly for you. Those things suck, I feel your pain.

You can always try krill oil. The pills are smaller and more potent than fish oils usually. They also don't leave the fishy after taste. My husband takes them for generalized joint pain, that he too couldn't get anyone to figure out. If he takes them everyday the pain usually isn't too bad.

I made pancakes (plain and pumpkin) this morning for my friends. Which was great, except that half of them didn't bother to show up. Or even tell me that they weren't showing up. They texted my boyfriend that they weren't coming and I didn't get the memo. It was because they were hungover. Which, fine, I can accept that I guess, except I was under the impression my friends weren't doing any drinking/partying this weekend. Just because I don't drink, I don't know what's going on?

And I'm blaming a lot of what's upsetting me right now on being the only one in my house on the weekends and being on the other side of the group of houses from all my friends. It probably wouldn't be any better that way or anything, but sometimes I wish I had caved and lived with my bf and 2 other guy friends. At least they still like hanging out with me. And they came to eat my pancakes.

That sounded dirty to me as I was typing 😎

Just got my first ever speeding ticket. 😡
Speed limit dropped from 65 to 45 and I dont know if I didnt see the "speed limit ahead" sign or if there wasnt one or what, because I hit the brakes as soon as a I saw the 45 sign coming up, but was still going ~55 when I hit the 45 zone.

I guess 1 ticket in 8+ years isnt bad, but this is going to hurt my wallet.

Yikes! Speeding tickets are no fun. I know here in IL the price is now $120, I hope yours are a bit cheaper!
