That dog shouldn't have been at the dog park that day then. I do feel like it is the responsibility of a dog's owner to notice when a dog seems uncomfortable at the dog park and remove him/her from the situation as quickly as possible. You can't blame either one of the dogs here, because ffs they're dogs, and you can't expect an owner to be able to "teach" her dog to read other dogs' social cues either. WBV does need to train a better recall under distraction before taking his/her dog back to the dog park, though - his/her own vigilance should be his/her substitute for the dog's social ineptness. But really, the other dog's owner should have noticed that the dog was uncomfortable/fearful and left the dog park as soon as they noticed that.

I hate to open up this can of worms here, but honestly pit bulls don't belong at dog parks. I don't believe they're terrible monster dogs or anything the media says and blah blah, I like them and think they can be excellent human-safe dogs. But rather like I don't feel like you can train a herding dog out of its herding instinct, I don't think you can keep a pit bull that's inclined to be dog aggressive from being dog aggressive.

I would take it a step further and say that I think most dog park situations are not a great idea. Unless you have a park where there is a medical/behavior clearance, small groups of dogs, and vigilant owners (I can think of one in Philadelphia like that and the rest are kinda free for all) you have no way of knowing which dogs are sick, which dogs are nice, which dogs are compatible, which owners are paying attention... even without the worst case scenario of a dog fight (which is really, really awful if the dogs are at all set on continuing the fight), a lot of dogs learn fearfulness or bad manners from playing with inappropriate dogs or getting overstimulated. When I have a dog-friendly dog (previous and current are not) I will probably stick to play dates with people/dogs I know personally.

Dr. Sophia Yin has a good article about it... http://drsophiayin.com/blog/entry/bonnie-and-porter

My dog (pit/mastiff mix) was rescued bc he was going to be put to sleep at 9 months old due to dog aggression. I was told this, I'm aware of this, and although he is 100% fine with my other dog, I would never take the risk for his sake of putting him in a dog park situation. I can't say I trust him completely in a dog park situation so I refuse to risk it. He is the most gentle dog in the world and is never the aggressor, but his reactions to other dogs playing makes me very hesitant. Not to mention, little dogs... he wants 'em BAD. 😳

Pit Bulls and mixes thereof do not belong at dog parks. And to tell you the truth even if I owned another breed I would not frequent a dog park with that breed either because of risks involved from irresponsible owners, ill-managed dogs, diseases, etc. Pit Bulls were bred to be dog aggressive and while there is quite a large subset now that are not, when push comes to shove if for some reason another dog were to start a fight at dog park and a normally dog friendly pit bull were to fight back - the pit bull would be blamed. Hands down every time. They will very rarely back down from a fight - they are terriers ffs. Pit Bulls already have enough of a bad rap to overcome and every incident against them is a blemish on their record in society's eyes. It is very important for your dog to have good experiences when out in public and one fight can cause a lot of damage not only physically but emotionally as well. Better to not set your dog up for failure and avoid ever having it occur at all. I chose smaller playgroups for my dogs with one or two other well-known dogs, so the play can be monitored and only positive experiences can occur.

But their dog might not have been uncomfortable except with the WBV's dog. I think we don't have enough info without having been there.

WBV, how did they make a complaint against you if they left before you could talk to them? Did they know who you were? Or did Animal Control track you down somehow?

See I am aware that I have a bully breed, that's why we have socialized her since the moment we decided to keep her. She has been a frequent flyer at that dog park since she was 2 months old and are known there by name. The regulars recognize us the moment we start walking to the park and they are aware that she is non-aggresive.

The thing is I don't know if Star even realized that the dog was cueing her to get away...she is a people kinda dog and always runs to the owners first (and belly flops to get a scratch). In this case, their dog was right at their feet next to them and he might have just felt threatened or was hiding or whatever. And you know when you see a situation coming? You know what's gonna happen next but can't really do much to change it? Yeaa, one of those moments!

And yes, I know I run a risk of getting bitten when intervening in a dog fight - but I cant just let it happen and wait for them to figure it out myself. The more the other owner never moved a finger, became my responsibility to do something.

And to answer the questions - I have NO CLUE how they figured out who I was my full name or where I lived. No names were exchanged and I don't know how they tracked me down...Totally confused in that aspect. I have a feeling the other owners waited in their car for me to get into my car - in order to write down my license number. Because when I spoke to animal control he identified me as "are you an owner of a blue subaru".

This entire situation in my mind is completely out of hand. The other owners should have just talked to me instead of running away and I would have offered to take care of their vet bill. But now I am just upset!

I applaud anyone who can maintain a relationship while in vet school, especially those people who live with their SO. And those people who are dating someone that hasn't attended any sort if graduate school.

I want to just curl up inball and cry right now. But I must study anatomy!

FWIW I think owners CAN and SHOULD be assisting in teaching their dogs social cues, because its important, especially if you are going to be taking your dog off leash in dog parks. Yes the other dog was clearly uncomfortable but I think its hard to judge whether or not it should have been removed - just because it told one dog to "get lost" doesn't, to me, mean it should be the end of play time. However, if a young dog thinks an ok response to a lifted lip and growling is to body slam the other dog, that younger dog needs to be on a leash or have its owner close by to help it interpret the behaviour, because clearly its current ability to interpret social cues is inadequate.

I think in this situation both owners need to be more mindful of their dogs social behaviour and needs, but I disagree that the other dog shouldnt have been there, and I do think owners should DEFINATELY be taking an active role in teaching social behaviour to their pets.

Maybe it's being pedantic, I don't know, but I don't feel like an owner intervening when another dog gives a clear social cue will cause the socially inept dog to associate the other dog's social cue with the removal from the situation. That's why I say that the number one thing that a dog that did not learn very good canine manners at a young age should have is a really, really good solid recall under distractions. That's what I feel that the OP should train into her dog. That's not training the dog to respond to another dog's social cues, that's the owner recognizing the social cue and redirecting her dog from the one giving the warning. It's a substitute but it requires that the owner be vigilant and well attuned to canine body language.

🙁 everything ok?

We have a counselor here who offers sessions to SOs to help them understand the dynamic of a relationship in vet school. Not sure if you have something like that, but she meets with you and your SO and tries to make them understand that just bc you aren't spending all your time with them and can ignore them sometimes, that they are still important blah blah blah.
Hope it is just a phase that passes for you guys. :xf: I feel like I talk to my BF for 13 seconds a day and it's hard in that aspect too. We had a long hard talk before vet school about what to expect.

I hear ya. It's really tough for someone who hasn't been here to really understand the sort of time and energy commitment that grad/professional school takes. My SO is usually pretty chill about the whole thing (because I warned him a billion times that it would be like this), but there have been a few times where we've both gotten really frustrated.

For instance, I was on a summer clinical rotation last month on our Neurology service, and on that service, everyone has to sign up for on-call shifts and if you have inpatients over the weekend, you have to go in and do their 8 am and 8 pm treatments on weekend days. My SO had just begun a new job and they were having some welcome function attending a local minor league baseball game and he really wanted me to come along and meet everyone. I told him when he told me the date that I wouldn't know until the night before, it depended on whether I had inpatients, how much sleep I got, if I was on call, etc...but in the end he still got kinda upset with me because I ended up with 3 inpatients and also being on call the night of the game so I couldn't go. He sometimes doesn't seem to "get" that it's difficult for me to commit to things ahead of time because of how much my workload tends to vary. In the end though, if they're worth it, they'll deal with it.

So I might have contributed to the BF being put on administrative leave from his caretaker job.

They were discussing the friction with some other staff and it came up that he'd left a sketchbook with pictures of mutilated penises in it at one of the houses he works at and the staff had looked, thinking it was a client's (mentally disabled persons in community placed living) book. And of course all the staff had a looksee at my lounge telepictionary drawing of johnnydrama singing a song about a bag of chopped off dicks.

*headdesk*

I borrowed the notebook to draw it when we were out at Starbucks. Now comes the fun of trying to explain what happened, that BF did not draw the pic and that the rest of the book is filled with celtic art is apparently not helpful as he left the book at the house. Where the client could have seen it.

Is it the only reason he's on leave? No. But they (other staff) had to be digging deep to find ways to get him in trouble. It was a b/w bad line drawing and the peens were less than 3/4 inches on a 8 1/2 by 11 paper.

This is probably the pettiest "rant" ever and definitely qualifies as #firstworldproblems...
But I ordered a new phone and its supposed to be delivered on Friday. On which day I have surgery all afternoon and no way of being home to sign for it. And of course, UPS doesnt seem to have the ability to just hold the package at the local store so I can go by that night to pick up. They are "required" to make at least one failed delivery attempt before thats an option...which means I wont get my phone till Monday most likely because the local store isn't open on Saturday. Boo!

Do you know what time they are supposed to deliver it? I can go take a nap on your couch or something so that I can sign for it.

I have no idea. I might skip class in the morning and hope for the best. But UPS is usually here in the afternoon. And they can't give me any idea of time, but maybe if I call back that morning they'll have a better idea. I might recruit you!

Ok, just let me know. We both know that I never say no to naps. And I could play with your puppies and Hank.

I know that people are busy, but I am getting a freakin' ulcer waiting on my last 3 LORs to submit!!! I hate to keep reminding them, but seriously!!!!!!:scared:

On my second application, I only had 3 eLORs, and one of them FORGOT the deadline... He ended up sending it via mail and a week late. 🙄

Prolly had a little bit to do with why I was rejected.

You probably could. It might not be the most fun two weeks of your life, but if you had fast LOR writers...

You can totally do it.... I have the faiths in you LMMS!!!! 😀

Thanks for the votes of confidence, guys. However, I fear my posting was during a temporary lapse in sanity. I'm simply just lacking direction right now and haven't a clue as to what to do with myself. I've been recruited by a couple of places but nothing so far feels 'right' to me. Hopefully I'll get a  soon enough. Right now, the plan is to keep on trucking even if my supervisor continues to amaze me in her lack of knowledge of animal health... 'Only puppies get mange. Well, adults can get it but it's very rare. They only get it if they have cancer.' :smack:

Well this is a new one.

I fully intend on moving back to the states and doing an internship, so have been setting up externships all over since last year, and already completed 5. I was just denied an externship because I don't go to school in the US. 😕😕😕

That's just the latest in a long string of 'say wha?!?' I've encountered over the last five years. To be honest, I think that this individual is somehow distantly related to Dr. B that dyachei used to work with. The similarities are uncanny at times.

There are days I feel I need to write a book just filled with the one liners I get from this individual. It really is quite sad; and makes me wonder on a regular basis how exactly this one got in when I got told 'no' so many times. *sigh* C'est la vie...

1 out of my 6 has submitted and it's not even one that will help much..I am in the same boat as you. 🙁

Last week I explained to the former student body president of my alma mater the types of starting salaries we as soon-to-be-graduating vet students expect to see. She (a dental student who also graduated with a degree in engineering) was shocked at what I was telling her. I admitted I'm still scared by it.

Today, I see lots of friends from undergrad posting an article from abcnews.com that lists our university as one of the top schools salary-wise. To put it bluntly, the average starting salary of my undergrad degree is equivalent to, if not better than, the money I will make as a vet. It makes me sick to see those numbers tonight... to realize, yet again, that financially I have made a terrible, horrible, rotten decision to go to vet school. I will be happy, but I'd be lying if I didn't think quite often that things would have been easier if I had just gotten a job, gotten my husband through med school and then just quit and made my life about my family instead.

6 eLORS? 😕

I have 6 LORs, too. Partially because I'm applying to Cornell and they want letters from up to 5 "most significant" experiences, plus an academic letter, plus they really like letters from employers...

I'm with ya sbc, I'd make more money sticking with my original career choice ... But happiness is definitely worth more than money! 🙂

Sign me up! If my instincts are correct, we could have a huge audience just with the material of these two individuals. We could call it Things That Make You Go Hmmm. Some DVM's Say The Darndest Things!. The hmmm would be in a Scooby Doo accent of course!

Now THERE is a million $ idea! And we can hold contests for others to provide vetisms for upcoming editions. Have I finally found a direction?? 🙄

Can I add in the crazy crap the one vet I worked for did? Especially, the crap with his attitude when he would get frustrated. (He threw instruments during surgery, twice.)

Got an email from Scottish Power asking me to contact them. So I call them (this number is not a part of my phone plan so I get charged when I call them), and they are calling about the overdue bill from February-July......

:boom:

I honestly feel a little bad for the guy on the other line because it is not his fault that the landlord has yet to pay the bill and how was he supposed to know that I wasn't the one living here at that time... But STILL I was so mad that I just went off... I told him that I wasn't even in the country at the time that bill was produced and that he will need to contact xxx letting agency about that bill. He then proceeded to ask which letting agency it was... :slap:

Thankfully, he told me that he would take my email address and contact info off that bill... So hopefully that will be the last the I have to hear about it. :xf:

I also had 5 because UTK required it... are there schools that require 6?

VMCAS allows a maximum of 6 and I figured that since I easily have 6 people that can vouch for me why not do the max. Hopefully, it's gonna be beneficial! 🙂

That's not really always the case. Just make sure they're all fantastic I guess.

Well they are from people that have known me 4+ years excpet for 1, but even that one I spent 500 hours in a matter of roughly 2-2 1/2 months working with her. So I am hoping they will write fantastic ones! 🙂

I can't get any relief from this joint pain today... I have taken 800mg of Ibuprofen in the last 3 hours and I have tried the whole hot shower thing but nothing is working and I am starting to run out of ideas for how to get some relief. 🙁

As someone who is in constant joint pain, I completely empathize with you. There is not much that works for me either, so unfortunately I have little advice for you. Is it acute or chronic? Sometimes a heating pad works for me depending on where it is. Feel better 🙁

It is chronic. The pain is mainly in my wrists, knees and elbows but every joint is sore.

Ugh... we're joint sisters. Trying to find a new rheumatologist here as we speak. Feel better 😎

I have joint pain, too, but I have a feeling that mine is not as bad as you guys. I basically have all over body pain. Muscles, joints, everything. There is only 1 thing that I have found that helps. The pain does not go completely away, but it lessens it greatly.

Glucosamine pills. They are spendy, but after a month I really noticed a difference. I can walk up stairs without feeling like an old person now. And my hands/wrists feel much better.

For what it's worth, my dog has degenerative disk disease and I have him on a fatty acid joint supplement. He's typically stiff and slightly painful with bad flare ups but the supplement has seemed to help him out a lot. I'm not sure if they make something similar for humans?
