I should probably be used to this given the fact that I want to be a vet, but in my defense, I never have had animals growing up. But here is my little rant:
If a board certified exotic specialist charges $300-$350 for a regular rat spay, I'd hate to see what the clinic charges for cat and dog spays.
The exotic specialist is rarely in, so they referred me to another clinic that sees rats. The vet I saw wasn't certified but had 25 years experience with rats. His fee? $100-$150. Which is what I was expecting for this area.
Still on the fence about whether to spay for health reasons. I did appreciate hearing my vet's personal view as well as stating the facts. The exotics vet, who the girl who gave me my rats saw, seemed all about the numbers. But at $300 EACH, you won't see me doing it when other places are offering it for half the price. I didn't realize that a specialist could charge that much over the average. If I were to become a vet, I'd consider going the exotics route because there are few vets around. Nice to know I can charge top dollar I guess.
End mini rant.
