They don't make you shower at the barns?

Herbal Essence shampoo works really well to get it out of your hair. (I used the purple one when I worked at a pig farm)

No, these are research pigs so we are pretty much covered in PPE from head to toe when we work with them, I guess they figure you don't really need a shower after the PPE comes off.

I have the pink Herbal Essence and it is the high point of my after-pig showers lol 😀

Banging my head against the wall would have gotten me farther in life today.

My body seriously needs to get its act together. Last week I suddenly started having horrible stomach pains. They lasted a few days, and I decided to go to the hospital if I still had them the next morning. The next morning the stomach pains were gone, but within a few hours I started having back pain so bad I couldn't walk. By Monday morning, the back pain was fading, but Monday night I got a horrible headache. I still had the headache yesterday morning, but it finally started responding to ibuprofen, so yesterday afternoon and evening were ok. Then this morning I wake up with awful cramps that I haven't been able to do much about.

Body, stop it! I am giving you food, water, sleep, mild excercise, and massages from my sympathetic SO. Why must you be like this....

Maybe it's all sympathy pains from what everyone else here is dealing with.

Banging my head against the wall would have gotten me farther in life today.

*hugs*

I had a crappy day too. Tomorrow will be better!

I can't even believe that I'm writing this rant, but here goes.

I went to a dayspa today to relax prior to exams, which start in 2 weeks. Got a facial, full body massage, mani, pedi, waxing.. the works. Sounds amazing right?!

Instead of it being an awesomely relaxing experience, instead I was stressing out the entire time about the time i was wasting and how much I have to study. The music kept turning off so routinely I could hear everything happening outside my room, which wasnt helping. And then the polish they used for the mani/pedi apparently takes 24hrs to fully dry and it wasnt even close when I left, so now i have chipped, smudged, scruffy looking nails instead of beautifully done ones 😡 And now I feel like an idiot for even wanting to be pretty and relaxed, feel like it was a waste of money and I should have just gone for a run and stayed at home and studied!!!

Geez first world problems...

I am over this sickness ****. I am so incredibly exhausted now that I could sleep all day if I let myself. I have missed every morning class this week because of pure exhaustion. I am so sick of felling like a prisoner trapped within my own body. I just want a break. I just want one day where I can feel like a normal human being. One day without feeling tired, painful, short of breath, nauseous or dizzy. That is all. End rant.

Totally could have slept another hour. Got up an hour too early and didn't realize it until I came up to a locked door at the research lab. Go me.

Sort of annoyed. I was the first freshman that signed up to help with November interviews this year and somehow I managed to be on the wait list at number 5 behind people that heard from me to sign up. So I know I was before them. Obviously something just got a little mixed up, but I'm just annoyed. Not a huge deal. Not gonna even mention it to anyone besides y'all. Just annoyed.

Really hope you start feeling better soon.

I spent all week busting my balls to do a big lab report for my micro lab. Because I just started this new job and am spending every spare minute there training, I don't have a lot of time to do school work at the moment. The lab was due today, but the TA decided that because he was getting so many questions yesterday and didn't like how people were writing their reports that now they are due Tuesday. Which is all fine and good except that I worked hard to get it done on time and now he is saying that the original instructions we got were all wrong so we have to completely revamp what we already did. Our professor for the lab wrote the original instructions but the TA didn't bother to read them until after he started getting all the questions even though he's the one grading.
And I have a botany test tomorrow (120+ plants to memorize but there only 20 will be on the test) and stupid studyblue has been down since last night and won't be up until tomorrow night. Which means all the note cards that I have to review since it's cumulative are inaccessible and I have to re-do all of them.
So whiny, I know, but it would just be nice if things would be a smidge easier at the moment.

That blows 👎

I should probably be used to this given the fact that I want to be a vet, but in my defense, I never have had animals growing up. But here is my little rant:

If a board certified exotic specialist charges $300-$350 for a regular rat spay, I'd hate to see what the clinic charges for cat and dog spays.

The exotic specialist is rarely in, so they referred me to another clinic that sees rats. The vet I saw wasn't certified but had 25 years experience with rats. His fee? $100-$150. Which is what I was expecting for this area.

Still on the fence about whether to spay for health reasons. I did appreciate hearing my vet's personal view as well as stating the facts. The exotics vet, who the girl who gave me my rats saw, seemed all about the numbers. But at $300 EACH, you won't see me doing it when other places are offering it for half the price. I didn't realize that a specialist could charge that much over the average. If I were to become a vet, I'd consider going the exotics route because there are few vets around. Nice to know I can charge top dollar I guess.

End mini rant.

Usually exotic surgeries are more than cat/dog surgeries. You can't use routine meds/anesthesia a lot of the time and exotics tend to be a lot more fractious under sedation than cats and dogs so you have to be hyper vigilant. I'm kind of surprised at the $100-150. But that could very well just be my area

And now the other website that I redid my cards on is barely working. Technology, why do you hate me?!

Small mammals are way harder to anesthetize safely than cats and dogs. So you're paying for that expertise plus (hopefully) better monitoring during and after surgery. My rabbit's spay was $280 and it was 100% worth it to know that she was safe and getting the best care possible.

I'm all about keeping things affordable but anesthesia is the one thing where I think... do you really want to have the "sale rack" anesthesia?

Before I got them, I saw prices ranging from $40-$300 on rat forums, with the average being around $100 so I had an idea of what to expect. People who saw spays in the $300 range usually found another clinic that gave them a better deal.

I have volunteered in 3 clinics and took my rodents to a few more. I still have a lot to learn. I am just a little shocked that spays were being pushed at $350 each. I wasn't expecting that at all.

On the bright side, I really like my vet. He painted the whole picture for me, which I really appreciate in a vet. He basically said that in his 25 years as a vet, he saw few rats that had problems related to not being spayed. That doesn't mean the problems don't exist. Perhaps many of the rats who have issues aren't seeing a vet. Because of the risks involved and lack of cases, he doesn't push spays unless medically necessary. He encouraged me to continue doing research, talk to the exotics vet for an opinion, and if I decided to spay to talk to him. They charge the same or rat spays as rabbit spays.

According to my friend, who wanted the mother and one of the sisters of my rats spayed, the exotics vet really pushed it on her because of numbers. Right now, I'm stuck in limbo for a bit. If the exotics vet sees a high number of cases in her clinic, it would be enough to sway me. Sadly, my friend can't do it at $350 for two rats but was considering it near the range the vet offered me.

I guess I am more naive than I thought!

End ramble.

I think that is a great quote! I am totally going to use that sometime!

Yeah, rabbit speys... hardest speys there are! I would pay top dollar for that two - you don't want someone cutting corners there!

Just found out my pup can't be a blood donor 🙁. He has the antigen #7 that blood donors can't have. * le sigh*

A coworker let out a feral cat today and apparently the best way to escape was by clawing up my leg and using me as a springboard.

Good points.
I realize that cutting corners and cheaper surgeries go hand-in-hand which is why the supposed $40 surgeries made me go "Whaaaa?" People were whining about the practices that offer $300 + anesthesia + exam on the rat forum I go on, so I thought that was extreme. I am getting really pissed off on the rat forum though. Too many people quoting "Spayed rats have a 4% change of developing mammary tumors. Unspayed have a 46% chance." I have yet to find where they got that figure. It doesn't help that whenever I try to google the pros an cons of rat spays, I get amateur web pages or ones that just give an extremely general overview. People also keep stating that rats cannot digest meat because they lack gall bladders. One month after getting my rats, someone comes along and claims that it is false and explained why. *facepalm*

I wonder how much the vet college charged my friend for her bunny spay.

Also will I ever know if a $100 spay is just as good as a $300 spay? Probably not. I did volunteer at a clinic that offered average prices. Although the vet is not a board certified exotics specialist, she's performed rat spays. I was very impressed with the monitoring she did during the spays and neuters I watched that I would be comfortable with her performing one. The downside is that she is 6 hours away.

A quick lit search pulled up this: http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/7775237, which compares ovariectomized rats and intact. That same study is referenced in both the veterinary resources on pocket pet disease/cancers I found, and according to one of those, the Sprague-Dawley line of rats actually had a lower incidence of mammary tumors than others. Pet rats could be from anywhere, obviously. I can send you the resources I found if you PM me.

We were taught that in dogs, spaying before first estrous makes mammary tumors nearly nonexistant, allowing a single cycle raises the incidence to 7%, and allowed more than that, the chance is about 25%. Obviously not rats, but something similar to chew on.

Thanks Trilt. I will give that a read. This is why I love this forum.

My cat still has diarrhea. Just spent $100 for another negative test...

My heart is hurting. Ive known this day was coming for 7 months. But it doesn't make it any easier. 🙁

Got a haircut today... second worst haircut I've ever had. Trying to grow out a pixie cut and went from something that looked vaguely like a mullet to something that looks distinctly like a mushroom. I've never had an issue following a hairstylist's advice until today. I'd take the semi-mullet over the sure-thing-mushroom any day :-/ I can wear scarves to cover it up because it's getting cold, but that won't fly in the equine ICU if I get called in, so I'm just going to have to suck it up and pretend like my head doesn't look freakishly large and round...

I expected an "ugly haircut" phase, but not this! Going back this afternoon to get it cut into an A line bob sort of thing. It'll take some of the length, but at least it will look better!

I'm in the exact some position in trying to grow out a pixie, but the current status of my hair is pretty good. I don't know how long the longest pair of your hair is, but if you can manage to be shorter in the front, bangs might help take away from the mushroom-ness. It'll probably grow long enough in a few weeks to start to look more like a short bob. Just try to bear with it.

ETA: Cross posted with you. That's what mine is right now, an A line bob with bangs.

Yeah the bangs hit just below my eyebrows, which is kinda fun and maybe I'll keep them this length for a while. The rest pretty much hits right below my ears, besides a few layers that are shorter on top. I am so bad at describing this to you all lol.

Edit: Holy crap these pictures are huge lol. I'll be taking them down within the next hour or so.

And one of my dog for good measure. Happy fall, she says!

Oh yeah, I forgot to explain which hair cut this is! This is the now fixed no-longer-a-mushroom-haircut.

Anyway, thanks, you two!

Your dog is gorgeous and so are you. 😍

Aww shucks 😳 Someday I'll post the picture of the pup that I sent my husband before we decided she was coming home with me. She was stinking adorable.

Sometime between 10 and 3 I got a nasty cold. Now I feel like death 🙁

My brand new foster pup decided to punish me for going to a movie by getting her jaws stuck in her wire crate while I was gone. Fortunately, my roommates were there to rescue her and she's okay . . . but now I don't know what to do about crate training and I'm a little paranoid about leaving her again. I'm such a nervous first-time mama!

They have crates with smaller 'squares'. Try that? Or put extra paneling in until she grows large enough not to be able to get stuck?

An airline crate might work better... as well as a tasty stuffed Kong to occupy her mind 🙂

👍
Or sheets of plexiglass / white board type stuff from Lowes/ Home depot, cut to fit. Attach tightly to crate. Lady I know who did this drilled holes for zip ties ever few inches to attach. I think she did the plexiglass on the inside of the crate, but I'm not entirely sure.

Oh, and from experience...don't bother with the canvas/fabric type crates until you know your dog is crate trained. Stupid me thought it would be a good way to travel back to parents house not long after I got the puppy...came home one afternoon to a three inch hole in the side of the crate. Not quite sure how the 15lb puppy managed to fit thru said hole, but she managed and was quite proud of herself

Add me to the injured prevet list. Fell during the 5k mud run today. Landed on my knee and it is swollen and hurts to put pressure on my leg.
