Slightly surprised no one has mentioned this but ARE YOU STILL ALIVE?? That sounds terrifying!!! Hope everyone's okay!

Yea. Thanks. haha It was quiet for the rest of the night. The kittens were a bit mad when I let them out of the carrier again, but besides that, they are all ok. All forgotten.

I don't think the roof is too bad. Part of the rain drain came down with the wood and stone around it though. And there's pieces of wood stuck in the ground like spears. Good thing my roommate's cat was inside over night. He likes to sit right there. It was a pretty big tree, or high I guess, and I'm surprised there's not more damage than it seems like there is now.

Childproof thingys on all drawers and cabinets!

It's actually the theobromine in chocolate that is a problem. Can't remember off hand what the percentage is, but dark chocolate is MUCH worse than milk chocolate.

Edit: found it. Here's the rough estimate amounts in decreasing order, with cocoa powder being the most harmful.

Cocoa powder: 800 mg/oz
Baker’s chocolate (unsweetened): 450 mg/oz
Dark chocolate: 150 mg/oz
Milk chocolate: 50 mg/oz

I know some of you already know all this. 👍 But for those that don't or need to share it with a friend that is skeptical(because THEIR dog survived after eating that lb of chocolate bar 🙄), here's a good link.

I don't know what you're talking about. I found some of the comments to be very helpful. I didn't know you could treat heartworm with chicken, veggies, and rice. I'll have to tell my parasitology professor that everything he taught us about heartworm was wrong .

Some people's children 🙄

we have a neighbor who uses a holistic vet (long time friend) who told the neighbor that her dog doesnt need heartworm testing or preventative because normal healthy dogs dont get heartworm disease. thats why so many shelter animals have it - because they're sickly.

😕

We have a holistic vet in my state that does HW tests by feeling the dog and owner's pulses at the same time. That crap makes me so mad. 😡

Things I have hear clients say about heartworm:

-It is a made up disease that vets use to get more money.

-Their dog can out-run mosquitoes.

-Their dog never leaves the house and therefore does not need the preventive.

-Small dogs can't get heartworm, that is only a problem for big dogs.

-Garlic cures heartworm.

-Heartworms don't actually cause any problems, vets just make it seem that way. Dogs can live just fine with heartworm disease.

That is all I can think of right now... I could probably think of more if I really tried.

"I don't take heartworm preventative and I've never gotten it. So my dog won't either."

"Oh, we don't have heartworm in this state"

"I've had dogs for 64 years and they've never gotten heartworms." "Have they ever been tested?" "Why would I waste my money on tests for a disease they don't have?"

"His heart is beating fine, so I don't think he has heartworms."

I messed up my shoulder at work today and now when I move my arm there's grinding in my shoulder.

hey now, my dog can outrun mosquitoes too. dont hate 😉

people are crazy for sure. every stray dog here has heartworm disease. every. single. one. perhaps we should send them necrospy photos?🙄

Most clinics I've been to have at least one super grody heartworm pic, usually from a puppy. My vet called it the "shock and awe" tactic  You just have to scare them enough

One of these photos was in the same exam room in full sight of the lady who claimed that the disease was "all made up." I pointed out the picture... her response, "that is fake." 🙄

this would be like the reverse oprah effect though - "you have heartworm, and you have heartworm, and YOU have heartworm! everybody has heartworm!!"

Some holistic vets can be like that, but there are others that realize preventatives are good and that heartworms are real. I just don't want them all to receive a bad rep.

This breaks my heart. My little new guy almost died because of complications from treatment. Everyone should have their dogs on preventatives. It's real and way more serious than I ever realized.

I don't doubt there are good ones out there. This one just does not happen to be one of them. I would say the same thing if it was any other vet. She's just a wack job. She also tries to get people to not give their dog rabies vaccines and all sorts of other crap.

I'm pretty freakin sad right now. 🙁
I found a kitten on the side of a highway last week and I've been trying to find a home for her but no one is interested. I have been able to put a little weight on her, but even the shelter won't take her right now. Said she'd probably be euthanized 😡 and she is WAY too cute and healthy to be euthanized. I sold an old textbook yesterday and trying to sell a couple more so I can get her a vet checkup, vaccines, spay, etc. It just sucks because the apartments I'm living in don't allow pets & even if they did, I travel a lot and don't have time for a pet.
I've rescued PLENTY of dogs/cats down here at school but for no reason I'm attached to this little girl and can't just leave her at the shelter that will automatically euthanize her. 🙁

What's even worse is that the city/people of the city COMPLAIN like no other about the high amount of feral/stray cats, yet refuse to have any type of animal control or feral spay/neuter program but they build new shopping centers/renovate streets, walmarts, etc ALL the time!!! :bang:
+pissed+

There used to be a Pug breeder near me who would tell people that brought his dogs that rabies shots kill dogs. When the people brought their dogs into the vet, he had to explain to a few of them that it isn't true. :bang:

my dog got dental yesterday and it didn't occur to me that he's actually aging until I was told he wasn't doing well under anesthesia. Made me cry a bit as I carried him in my arms.

We get we don't have mosquitoes at our house ALL the time. Honey you live in Florida they're practically the state bird!

I am so happy that heart worm is non-existent here, as in we rarely have to test for it or prevent it. The only dogs the have it are the ones that come from areas that have it. With global warming, who knows what it will be like in 10 years though.

I did a presentation last year on the French heart worm. That was pretty cool!

How old is she? The reason the shelter told you that is probably because they wait until they are at least 8 week and 2 lbs to spay/neuter and she would just either sit in the shelter/foster home and most likely get uri in the process. My advice to you is to fatten her up and then contact the shelter. Not sure where youre located, but kitten levels are slowing down and its sort of like the quiet before the kitten season storm that will come in spring. So she was born at a lucky time I terms ofngetting adopted/not getting euthanized.

Did your area take in any Hurricane Katrina dogs or adopt them? Alaska used to be essentially heartworm free and they aren't anymore due to the migration of Hurricane Katrina pets being sent throughout the country and spreading heartworm to the mosquito populations. Something to think about. (and here, a year's supply of hw prevention and a test once a year are something like $110)

I'm guessing she's around 8 months. I work at shelter when I'm back home so I tried to fatten her up and bathe her to get her as adoptable as a could. However we have tropical climate here and we are WAY overpopulated with cats no matter what time of year. I would love to somehow get a low-cost spay/neuter program down here so this problem can be no more. Just don't know how to start blehg

When I was doing my presentation, I came across a link that talked about how a lot of the heart worm cases in the province were from Katrina. They can't survive in Mosquitos though because of our climate.

In 2010, one dog tested positive in our province and that dog was imported.

Lyme disease is the big thing here.

they don't have to survive in mosquitos year long if they are thriving in dogs that haven't been tested.

I would think preventive measures would be a good idea (especially with the "snowbirds").

I actually witnessed this trend while working. Used to see about a case every year and a half, with Katrina went up to having 9 cases at the clinic I was working at in the year.

if it makes you feel better at all, how an animal does under anesthesia doesn't necessarily relate to their age. i ran anesthesia on a puppy a few weeks ago and it was horrific, we actually had to abandon the procedure because he was doing so poorly; on the flipside i've seen ancient cats do just fine for hours under anesthesia.

Things I have heard about heart worms:

1. My yard is fenced in. So we don't have fleas or mosquitoes.

2. We live on top of the mountain, so fleas and mosquitoes can't get up there.

3. Heart worm preventative is pesticide, and the worms are natural, so it's better to get the worms than poison my dog every month.

4. My dog is so strong and healthy, there's no way he'd ever get sick. You know he got in a fight with a raccoon and didn't even bleed.

5. Sharpeis/bulldogs/ random dogs have thick skin... Mosquitoes can't bite them through the wrinkles.

And so many of the ones already posted.

People are dumb, end of story. If you stop expecting so much out of people, you won't be disappointed anymore.

So fecking annoyed and sad.... 😡😡😡 🙁🙁

Lost my purse at the bar last night.... ugh..... have called the bar - so far it has not been seen, no transactions have come through on the cards, there was not too much money in it, and it was my small going out purse, so although I lost makeup it is replaceable. I have already called & cancelled all of my cards - they are all being replaced & will hopefully come next week. But my IDs are a different story. My school ID should be fairly easy to replace. But my CA Driver's License is not as I have to be present at the DMV to do so.... WTF - seriously! and then my GNIB card which I need in order to stay in the country needs to be replaced & that is going to cost me 300 euro... which is money I really didn't have extra to spend. I am so majorly pissed off and bummed. I have filed a report with the police here and covered all my bases. I will be calling the stations again on Monday to check in as well as calling the bar tomorrow to see if my bag has been turned in. I just want my wallet back - they can have any cash in it... just really want the ID cards.... FECKING HELL

Lyme disease is the big thing here.

So what I was told in my brief intro to parasitology was that urban environments create hotspots because of the buildings vehicles and such. This creates an environment where mosquitoes can live even if they would normally die because of the drop in temperature. Having had a dog with a reaction, personally I'd keep my dogs on preventatives regardless of the risk.

I think my puppy may have a UTI. I don't have money this week for this! Still need to get my car fixed, waiting to get paid to do that. 🙁

Just left the restaurant and I'm hungry. I didn't eat lunch (I was expecting there to be something at my interview. There wasn't), and then dinner was just bad. First they brought me the wrong dumplings (which would have been really bad if I had a shrimp allergy, since the wrong ones had shrimp in them) and then the soup wasn't good. It tasted like zoo food! I couldn't eat very much of it. Their thai iced tea isn't even very good. So now I'm hungry and upset. 😡

That is reassuring. Thanks! But I wonder why he was doing poorly under anesthesia.. He's gotten dental before and neuter and surgery due to HBC.. Any Ideas??

Both of my parents healthy dogs did poorly under anesthesia. The MN terrier's HR dropped to 40 right after induction, we had to give him ER meds to bring his HR up.. The Dr. Explained to me that athletic dogs have a tendency of reacting this way. The FS Shih Tzu was darn near awake during her dental. We had to have the gas up way higher than normal and even then she was not cooperating very well.

Yorkies seem to be a pain under anesthesia every single time they are under.. Either they are too light or too deep.. They don't have a good happy medium until your almost done with the procedure!

I guess the moral to my story is that every dog is different and they all react to anesthesia different!

I just re-watched The Lion King for the first time in 10+ years. WHY DON'T THEY MAKE ANIMATED MOVIES THAT GOOD ANYMORE?!?!?!

Edit: Forgot that Toy Story 3 and Up! are both really good and slightly more recent too.

Dammit!

Just got a text from an acquaintance saying that her neighbor's boxer puppy has bloody diarrhea and that she doesn't have the money to treat it. The neighbor said that she'll take her to the vet in two week. WTF!!!

I am so pissed!! She wanted me to come over and talk to her neighbor but I declined because a) I'm not a doctor and b) I'll just lose my cool.

That is a bummer. We are tropical here in fl as well but honestly we go through a "slow" (I say that lightly, we are always full) time in winter where we actually have at least 2 cages open at any given area of the shelter. I share your pain, there needs to be a feral cat control method everywhere. The common control method here is to trap and euthanize. Sucks. We had a fix a feral program here but we stopped because no one really participated and it is technically illegal here to re-release feral cats, even if they are spayed/neutered.

Situations like these suck. Im sorry.

yeah, I just wish I could do something about it. I plan to do some fundraising for that just bc the town I'm from back home have an AMAZING feral spay/neuter program along with free cat and pitbull (mix) spay/neuter as well. Just need to find the right people to help fund it and sponsor fundraisers, etc. I hate all these poor animals running loose and getting hit by cars 24/7! I can't save them all, but if I can make even the SLIGHTEST impact while I'm here, i'll be happy. Can you tell I'm interested in shelter med? 🙄

At dinner tonight I was listening to the people across from us talk about pit bulls. Since I work at a shelter I see the bad but mostly good side of these dogs and it really irritates me when people are so ignorant about them. 😡 they were saying they all have issues at a shelter and should not be a type of dog to rescue because they can never be trusted.. ugh! If you are going to say it its should be about all not just certain breeds or rescue animals 😎 wish I could show some of these people what they are missing, there are so many wonderful ones out there 🙄

I feel your pain. Went for chinese buffet (which I expect to be greasy and bad for you haha) but it had changed hands and it doesn't even taste good anymore. So I spent $12 on dinner that I didn't even like or want 🙁
