As I was literally walking out of my house to do the drive back to school, my dog got really hunched and uncomfortable. Wouldn't move at all. I had my mom take her in, and the x-rays showed that "she is trying to pass something but is having difficulty." They sent her home with i/d and hairball gel. I hope that's all she needs, I'd be a nervous wreck if she needed surgery and I'm so far. 🙁

I also had a heart attack because my mom is terrible with stories and says "They also found a mass on her liver." So I start panicking and, mind you, I'm driving with one of my cats screaming at me and it's a blizzard. She eventually continues with "But I asked the vet to compare today's film to the one we took several years ago. Turns out it's probably just a fat deposit unique to her." :smack:

Well today was a little bit better at my off campus elective.... But the newest tech apparently quit after yesterday, which made this morning pretty awkward.

This is so silly, but huzz and I are catching up on The Walking Dead through the local public library. I just got a notification that Disc 3 of Season 4 is available for pick-up...but not disc 2! So it's essentially useless to us right now. I really wanted both discs so we could binge watch this weekend during the big (expected) snow storm 🙁 And we don't have Netflix, so can't do that. Boo.

Maybe you sign up for the free trial for those episodes. Think it's a week long...

ETA: Even better it's one month

I jinxed Res Life yesterday. We had a major incident (sometimes two) starting last Wednesday and going every day until Monday. But Tuesday we broke our streak! And then I said, out loud, "Hey Other RD From Different Building, we broke our major incident streak yesterday!" And you know what? Fight last night in his building involving one of my kids at 10 pm. After some of the crazy that's happened in the last week, having a petty fight made me go like, "Really? Really kids? This is ******* ridiculous!"

If I hear one more person tell me "at least vet school is only 2 years"....

Shadowed a vet for the first time today. I thought everything was going well and then suddenly I felt nauseous and started sweating. It wasn't long before I fainted and hit my head on the operating table. I got 4 stitches to the right-back side of my head and I'm thoroughly embarrassed! I did not think the procedure was disturbing (the vet was extracting teeth from a shelter cat) so frankly I'm not sure what happened. 🙁

This exact thing happened to a shadower in my clinic, except we were in a sterile surgery suite and she touched all of the sterile sheets on the way down. I felt soooo bad for her, she hit her head on the table and bruised up her face really bad. Ever since, we bring in a chair for her just in case she starts feeling woozy... But it hasn't happened again. I'm so sorry that happened to you, but just know that it happens to a lot of people and it's not something that can't be overcome with more experience!

Edit: also something that might help - make sure you're not dehydrated and have normal blood glucose levels. That may have contributed to it

Yeah I concentrated on eating a good breakfast this morning, but I also was running late so I didn't really hydrate. That definitely could have been a factor. Thanks for the encouragement!

Also don't forget to breathe. And don't lock your knees. Don't be afraid to ask to step out or sit down.
For me personally I have to be careful not to get to hot. Something as simple as socks that are too heavy or shoes that don't breath or an extra t-shirt under my scrubs will sometimes make me feel warm and lightheaded. Compounded by surgical masks that suffocate you and gowns that strangle you. I almost landed on a TPLO in vet school but luckily felt myself getting hot, excused myself, scrubbed out and downed a bottle of water. Was fine for the rest of surgery after that although I was demoted to observing instead of handing instruments over 🙂

Also - it sometimes just happens. I'm usually the first to volunteer for blood and grossness, but a couple months ago I almost hit the floor during a sedated trans-tracheal wash. Literally had to hand the patient off (I was restraining) and sit down on the floor because the world was going dark. Weirdest thing - I had eaten well, actually slept fairly well, all in all was perfectly fine but something about it that day just made it bad.

Same kinda thing happened to me the first time I saw a spay except that I hit the floor and I think only bit my lip. It happens. My first thread on SDN was about the second time I felt light headed during surgeries several months later. There were some good responses in that thread...http://forums.studentdoctor.net/thr...ight-headed-while-watching-surgeries.1000697/
My main takeaways: make sure you're not dehydrated or hungry, try not to be too tired, don't lock your knees, and pay attention to your body. If you start to feel light-headed, excuse yourself and get some water, etc. I haven't had any signs of light headedness through watching and assisting in many surgeries since then. You'll be fine 🙂

This is even worse when you're sick and can't breathe normally. I almost let myself out of a foreign body procedure on my first surgery rotation. I had come down with a nasty cold and was called in during the middle of the night for it. I got so warm and felt myself getting a little lightheaded. Luckily it was at the point of closing, so I was able to finish the procedure.

It seriously happens to everyone even the super experienced. Don't beat yourself up over it, learn the signs that's it's coming.

And just got my first text, post passing boards from an aunt I see maybe once every couple of years asking for advice for her lab with an itchy paw and scooting. They've already complained to me about their vet wanting to run tests for his constantly itchy ears, so I'm sure they're going to love my response of he should see his vet.

I had to leave every orthopedic surgery procedure over the course of 3 weeks that I had scrubbed in on due to feeling lightheaded. I was fine for the soft tissue cases, but the orthopedic cases I just couldn't stay scrubbed in for. However, I also had a concussion during my orthopedic rotation, so that might have played a role in it as well.

My actual major issue with the orthopedic procedures, is that if it's a cruciate and were scoping before hand, I just want to fall asleep. It just doesn't do it for me. Especially since I am doing pretty much nothing in regards to helping in the procedure.

I was always doing something... either holding a leg "just like this don't move" or handing instruments or using suctions or whatever.

I did that too, but the degree of helping I did was often depending on the senior on the case. It also depended on how many people were scrubbed in. If people we were bored, we'd often have extra residents so I'd get bumped further down the chain of assistance.

Additional rant: Ordered Indian food from a place we don't typically order from cause our usual place was closed. It was so bland and disappointing.

Respiratory physiology :blackeye:
Our respiratory physiology prof was really good. His favorite line was "no breathe, no live". Of course I think every specialist says that ("no heart, no live", "no liver, no live", "no kidneys, no live", "no blood, no live"etc. etc.)

No eyes, no live.

Wait a minute. . .

My poor dog's been sick all week. Our vet first suspected a blockage she was trying to pass. Well, I guess she covered the house in bloody diarrhea and vomit last night, so my mom took her to the ER. 4+ clostridium. I'm glad it's nothing surgical, but she feels like crap 🙁

The house my boyfriend was seriously considering putting an offer on just went off the market 🙁 He's so particular about the most random things, and this was the only house that fit the bill. Hopefully we find another good one by summer break.

Thanks guys I really appreciate it. I'm trying to stay positive and take something away from this even if those things are not about the medicine...like how to treat people and clients, what not to do etc.. its just disappointing that I picked this place not knowing what I was getting myself into and I could have gone somewhere more worth my time :/
So sorry to hear you're having a bit of a rough time 🙁 I've personally felt pretty let down about some of my third year experiences. PM me any time you want to talk, vent, complain 😉

Just broke with my boyfriend of five years.

Thanks everyone. It was very hard to get out, but once I did, I think it's the best decision for both of us. He has felt that he has sacrificed a lot for us to stay together and has been holding back on his career. I told him that this is his chance to go back and fix his bad grades and work on a masters to become more competitive for jobs. We were able to reach a zone of acceptance and once he's ready, he and I will start to talk again and keep the friendship alive. Like my friend from undergrad said, you never know if we'll hit it off later after we have time to get our lives in order. You just can't take care of someone else if you can't take care of yourself, and that was going on with him from my perspective. I hope this is the thing that gets him motivated to get his life in order.

Euthanized a patient owner only had for a week or so from shelter that defied every. single. thing. I tried to help it.
Roads are okay closer to work but cruddier out here but I went in to work this AM anyway...where there was nothing to do because roads were bad.
I just want to shower and crawl into bed and mope.

Local "rescue" took in this 10yo F dog that was recently spayed. Well....she's a trainwreck. It would be better to figure out what *isn't* wrong with her. This is her current list of issues (that I have proof of):
  • heartworm positive
  • generalized alopecia and lichenification with odor
  • bilateral ear infection
  • multiple mammary gland masses
  • AGGRESSION (both to people and other dogs)
  • underweight
  • historical recurrent demodex
I think she probably has an endocrine disorder leading to the skin issues. But even diagnostics alone to determine what's really going on are going to cost an arm and a leg. And that money could help so many more dogs. They rescued her off what they term "death row" at the shelter and that mindset bothers me, too.

If my tech didn't have lightning fast reflexes, she'd be at urgent care for a bite wound right now. And this was while she wasn't doing anything. Dog gave no signals that I saw.

Wow.. Aggression alone is a huge problem for the rescue... But add in HW + and mammary gland masses and thats a big trifecta of badness... 100% agree, the rescue could use their funds much better by saving several healthy animals that just need vaccines / being altered etc. :bang:

Yeah. I haven't been super impressed with their choices. This isn't the first human and dog aggressive dog they've tried to place. Talk about liability.

Sheesh, thats an accident waiting to happen.. You cant fix stupid, I feel bad for the poor people adopting from this rescue because they have no idea what they are getting themselves into.

well, they don't place very many dogs. So there is that.
