I swear to Thor I will fight the next person who re-posts that stupid meme about there not being a cure for cancer because there's more money in chemo drugs than there is in a cure. It's like, think about that for a second. If the cure for every single cancer existed, drug companies would be tearing each other to pieces over it. People would pay any amount of money, because it's a disease that takes pets and family and friends from us... what wouldn't anyone give for a cure? I'm sure scientists and pharmaceutical people have lost loved ones to cancer as well.
And of course this last person had to add HIV on to the list of things we haven't cured because of money. Um... no. The lack of knowledge about how infectious diseases spread and how science works makes me sad sometimes. People want to believe these stupid conspiracy theories because they don't understand, and they COULD understand if they were taught better... or taught at all. It's easier to think someone is deliberately hiding the answer from you than learning the truth.
Physics II seriously makes me want to throw things. I can participate in class and understand everything just fine. but put a quiz or a test in front of me, and I have no idea![]()
Lol Physics. The only thing I liked about that class was the theory of relativity chapter. Everything else was ok, except rays and optics. Really?? That was one of my favorites! LOL I must be weird.Lol Physics. The only thing I liked about that class was the theory of relativity chapter. Everything else was ok, except rays and optics. I hated that.
I tutored that class and I saw a lot of students with the same problem.
Lol it might be because I took the class during my last semester. Huge senioritis, and knowing that it wasn't required for OSU, my motivation went "bleh" ¯\_(ツ)_/¯.Really?? That was one of my favorites! LOL I must be weird.

Also, I came down with a bad fever for the midterm that included rays and optics and I couldn't study well. Add all that, and there you have my distaste for that topic hahaha.
You guys should take physics 2 with my professor... Everything is open note 😀

Yeah but what pharm company wants to be known for the cancer drug that doesn't work? If they don't have a certain amount of efficacy, why would a doctor prescribe it?To some degree the pharmaceutical industry is controlled by money. I watched a special on super bugs due to our overuse and inappropriate use of antibiotics. The claim: The purpose of a new antibiotic is to not use it unless it's absolutely necessary. Each time you use it, it opens the door for drug resistance and can make the drug less effective. So if your job is to design a drug...why design one that people are intentionally not going to use initially when you could instead get into drugs related to obesity, heart disease, diabetes, etc. Those are guaranteed money makers.
I'm not saying the company can't do both, but it seems like a huge money hole to attempt to research certain types of drugs. Cancer I can't say I would have classified as one of those, though due to the genetics and varying DNA of cancer cells you have to wonder if there will ever be a "cure" for cancer. A cure or prevention for AIDS/HIV I agree is because of difficulty with mutation of the virus. Though the disease is so prevalent in developing countries who would pay for the cure? There are scientists out there trying to do those things, but you can't deny money isn't a major factor in drug research.
Yeah but what pharm company wants to be known for the cancer drug that doesn't work? If they don't have a certain amount of efficacy, why would a doctor prescribe it?
Also, there are some *very* good results on some of the newer cancer drugs that specifically target certain types. We may never have a cure for cancer as a whole, but we will likely have cures for various types.
This is completely random, but I thought I would share this with you guys for a laugh. I share an office with my adviser's PhD student and it is quite nice. Today one of the PhD's from my floor is sitting in a chair in my office and is staring into the wall doing nothing. Really creeped me out and made it hard to focus at all.
Can confirm, I had MANY "stare and think" occasionsBeen in the research game for awhile now. Definitely nothing abnormal going on there. The combination of general social awkwardness and propensity for extreme levels of concentration that many PhD types have make hardcore "staring at nothing" a common phenomenon in the lab haha.
But in a random persons office? LolCan confirm, I had MANY "stare and think" occasions
Yeah that definitely looks strange to an outsider, but you never know when an idea hits you. I would get mean looks from people in the cafeteria because they thought I was staring at them eating lunch. I promise I wasn't, just trying to work through something! But in a random persons office? Lol
I'm convinced that many of these herbal medicine people diagnose their patients with random diseases that need to be 'treated' with their supplements. Of course the drugs always work and then the patient is proclaim 'cured'. The patient is convinced of how wonderful this doctor is who treated this crazy disease and recommends the doctor and their potions for every single ailment you might happen to have.Unless you have dinguses like that dude who was selling chemo to people who didn't even have cancer... but he's a pretty rare/extreme case
Yeah I understand how that is going through grad school. I just wasn't sure if it was an idea or something wrong hit him. I felt kind of bad at the same time.Yeah that definitely looks strange to an outsider, but you never know when an idea hits you. I have definitely seen this. Now, I am not downing homeopathic medicine because I have seen some of it work rather well. However, modern medicine should not be discounted; it has been proven many times to work. And, ironically, this is how the herbal medicine patients feel about modern medicine.
Homeopathic medicine is complete bunk. Other alternatives may be fine. But the entire theory behind homeopathic meds is that the more dilute you make something, the more the active ingredient "works". Oh and the active ingredients are chosen because they cause the same symptoms as the disease.I have definitely seen this. So....yeah, it makes no sense and often times the effects in double blind studies are the same as placebo.
Right, but that stuff isn't homeopathic.Yeah, all I have seen work is some alternatives that we use in the clinic. Not any "energy" or voodoo stuff LOL
Right, but that stuff isn't homeopathic.
Alternative medicine that works eventually becomes mainstream as studies are performed. Or studies are performed and there's no discernible difference and they stay alternative.
that's because many providers of chiro or acupuncture also provide homeopathic and herbal remedies.I think part of the problem is that few people know the definitions and differences between:
Herbal
Homeopathic
Alternative
Western
Eastern
Medieval
Natural
Unleaded
Ultraevil
Some of those are jokes... but the point is, I've heard people routinely lump acupuncture in with homeopathy and massage therapy in with chiropractic care and others call all of it alternative medicine.
Just goes to show how ignorant people can be when it comes to the safety and well being of animals.I posted this on Facebook earlier. I almost cried. People suck.

Hunting is one thing, butOr that people just don't care.
I mean, there are a lot of indigenous peoples around the world that actively hunt and eat sea turtles. To us, that's horrific. To them, it's considered a necessity.
In this case, there was a blatant disregard for this animal's safety/well-being for the sake of a PICTURE. Not even to provide yourself with food or income. For a damn selfie.
You could think the thing was a fish and know it needed water at some point during all of that. I just don't get it.
I figured as much, but was not sure what to call it. Maybe Eastern?
LOF, you forgot the popular Google Medicine 😛
You've never seen homeopathy work because it doesn't.
Okay, fair enough. I was being a little too broad and sweeping in my statement... especially considering we definitely had this discussion at my last equine rotation. Whoops. I guess that begs the question though, is it better to utilize these homeopathic techniques or do nothing, considering we're just making use of time? The way it was explained to me is that owners either want to do something, or want to see you doing something. Curious to hear your opinion on that.Homeopathy does work. It's essentially the tincture of time, which works great in a good number of cases.

Hunting is one thing and is the livelihood of some cultures. Causing an animal to die for a selfie is plain selfish.
