Plus I think I would be too worried the cat would get sick from whatever the mice are carrying around, yuck.
My reply to you and minnerbelle (and sorry in advance if some of you don't like it)
I can understand some concern about getting some of those lovely parasites y'all are learning about but...
I would go to a kill shelter, pick out an adult cat that is going to be euthanized soon (maybe one that has spent some time outdoors) and bring it home. You have now prolonged its life. Consider it a working cat. Its job is to catch mice.
I would say the odds are against it getting sick. Lots of cats catch mice, they all don't get sick. Also the mere presence of cat I have noticed can be incentive to drive the mice to your neighbors!
😛
Now if the cat does get sick, you can:
1) Euthanize the cat because you can't afford to treat it. I mean you have hopefully provided it with a decent prolonged life. It is better off than it was before.
2) Treat it because you are a caring human being who wants to be a vet. I guess you go without Starbucks for a few months (or some other sacrifice).
I am sure most of you (including me) will end up with option 2, but even worst case you have helped the cat a bit.
Anyway that is my cold harsh logic.
Now if this weren't a pre-vet option I would be worried about other options (abandonment, keeping it suffering without treatment, inhumane killing, etc), but I hope I can assume none of us would do that.
Anyway, "food for thought".
Really, I am pretty sure the presence of a cat has driven the mice to my neighbors here! Not foolproof but .....
Not sure why bunnity has mice though. Maybe they just sense a warm person and can't resist her.
