My dog just bit my arm three times... my mastiff. He somehow managed to get himself all twisted on his runner and was so wrapped up, I thought for sure his leg was broken. He had it in between each toe, wrapped around his leg, and a part of our deck, and the harder he pulled, the tigheter it got. He literally hog tied both his back legs tight as hell. When I tried to cut it off, it was obviously exrtremely painful just to touch his leg and everytime I touched it, he yelped and bit my arm out of fear and pain I'm assuming. Poor guy 🙁 but I'm still NOT happy that he thought it was ok to bite me.

And no, I did not throw my dog out on a runner and leave him there. He is a crazy pup and wrapped himself up in about 12 seconds with me standing right there. We live in front of a busy road and I put them both on a runner so they can run around a little bit with me and not worry about them getting hit.

So now my arm feels awesome, I have a sore pup, and need to figure out how to curb this behavior in the future! I am NOT having him bite people 😡

So wait - what on earth is she doing to break the lock, anyway? Does she want in the drawer (how would it happen otherwise?) and then what does she want? Your controlled drugs? Why? I'm trying to think of a good reason to break open a lock instead of asking to borrow something.

Thanks. It's ok, I'm just more upset over everything that happened. I feel like a failure with all of his behavior problems. I'm usually a pretty good trainer, but damn this one has given me a run for my money.

Is there any way you could switch drawers with someone? I don't know what you're using/how it works, but then at least she couldn't "confuse them" anymore.

The BF did something awesome and all it is doing is causing issues because he didn't think to ask some basic questions.

He ordered me a laptop using the rewards money he got from work. I need a new laptop, especially if I am going to vet school. The school I might get in to has a very specific list of requirements for a laptop. This laptop he ordered does not fit one of them: processor speed. The school says I need a processor that is Pentium 3 or equivalent with a speed of 2 Ghz. The laptop he ordered as a surprise which is arriving today has a processor speed of 1.3 Ghz. Dude. my laptop from 2005 has a 1.73 Ghz processor. It's supposed to be a good machine, it runs windows 7 and to be honest I don't know enough about processor speed to know if it's really going to be an issue. I'd like to upgrade from my old lappy in more than just RAM and hard drive size, I'd like a laptop with an HDMI out and more than 2 usb ports. But I also don't want to hurt his feelings and tell him this deal he thinks he's gotten really wasn't and I need the laptop that costs $180 more.

The real issue is I wasn't ready to buy a laptop yet. I hadn't considered what I wanted in one, what I needed etc. My heart dropped when he told me he'd ordered it yesterday. And god dammit I do not want to have this conversation with him in which I hurt his feelings because he didn't get the right shiny. HE NEEDED TO ASK AND DOUBLE CHECK BEFORE IMPULSE BUYING SOMETHING FOR ME.

Because now I get to look the gift horse in the mouth, or I get to shut up and maybe have to buy another laptop for school in the future.

So my maternal grandma had a stroke. Now, she's a tough one. She had a heart attack 10 years ago and had a quadruple bypass surgery done, had a couple of minor strokes while recovering and still managed to regain almost 100% function. She had some issues with one of her hands afterwards but otherwise has been pretty functional, though since my grandpa died 5 years ago she's had to move into the nursing home owned by the other side of my family, which has honestly had its own toll on her as she has always been a very independent and headstrong person.

Honestly I'm pretty torn. Having known her, and knowing how much she fiercely values her independence, I almost feel like if this is going to debilitate her further (and, there's almost no doubt it will...it happened on Sunday and she's still pretty minimally responsive), maybe it's for the better if this is the end for her and we all let her go. But I don't know if that's really an "okay" thing to think. I realize that my point of view may be unpopular, so I don't really know how to discuss it with my mom. I wouldn't call it the "easy" way out. I was just having this discussion with someone the other day. I have been able to be quite at peace with people's deaths and no one ever understands and assumes I'm "unattached". But depending on the person's passing, I sometimes see it as a blessing. I personally think my exposure to veterinary medicine and euthanasias has allowed me to come to peace with death at a younger age than most people. I personally think it is a wonderful part of veterinary medicine and as I told K-State...... I wish that humans could pass when they are ready and suffering. (Obviously sudden, unexpected death of a family member is a different situation than what I'm talking about, but this is how I feel about people suffering).

I wouldn't be too hard on yourself about how you are feeling about the situation. Everyone deals with these things differently and I think your view may be more popular than you think. Especially considering your grandmother's independence. My grandmother is the exact same way and when we had to put her in a home a year ago, she has been bitter about it ever since. She never wants to depend on other people and has straight up told us to "just pull the plug" if anything else happens to her.

She was just diagnosed with congenitive heart failure yesterday, so that day is coming sooner than we all wanted. I hope she passes before she struggles too much. She wouldn't want anyone to remember her that way, and I have a feeling your grandma is the same way.

I don't know about dealing with talking to your mom about it, but don't feel like a "jerk" at all. I think it's much more compassionate than people who want their family members around for their own sake.

He was mostly getting me with his little front teeth so I guess it could have been worse. I was just more freaked out than anything. It looked insanely painful for him though, so I guess it was out of pain and fear mostly. He is usually a gigantic teddy bear 🙁

Aww thank you guys. I've only been fostering for 2 weeks, but I've been marketing him pretty heavily and getting no interest at all. Hopefully someone will come along soon!

So it's weird. I had him at the shelter for a vet check up and asked them to cat-test him. Basically they walk him up to a cage with a cat inside. He was super nice and polite to the cat. He was also totally fine at an adoption event with kittens in crates. But when we're outside and he sees the strays he really seems like he wants to chase them. I have a hard time telling his body language about that... he also does this stop/stare thing at big dogs - yet he is totally friendly to them. It seems like his response to anything interesting, including a tasty smelling restaurant or a person he wants to pet him or a dog, is to stop and stare. So I can't tell how much of his response to the stray cats is just him being like "that's interesting" and how much is "that's tasty." Or how he would be with a loose cat indoors. If you are really interested though I can ask the shelter / other volunteers if there's anything else we can do to get a better idea of his cat friendliness. Any idea how your roommate's cat is with dogs?

You could try having a dog friendly cat on a leash in a room with him. He would also be on a leash, btw. See how he reacts to it. It could be that all he wants to do is play with them. My friends Lab always chases the farm cats when he visits. But he wants to play with them! There's one cat that will play with him and he is just in heaven with it.

Most 'cat-friendly' dogs I've owned and seen act differently towards cats in their own homes than they do towards random cats out on the street.

Also, I worked pretty hard to train my deaf dog not to chase my cats, and then the little bastards trained her right back into it. I think they've figured out that she doesn't know they're coming unless she can see them, so they've taken to zooming up to her from behind/the side/above and then cutting right in front of her and running down the hall. If she doesn't chase they'll stop in the middle of the hall, come back and stand in front of her, and then take off down the hall again when she notices. So I starting giving her the signal to 'go ahead' and chase when they do this, because they deserve to get whacked with her paws if she catches them (which she almost never does as there's a huge window ledge a straight shot from the hallway and they jump up on it) and that's quite honestly the worst she'll do to them is the paw whack. I should add though that my cats are very, very dog savvy, having grown up with all different types of dogs in the three places I've lived.

Very minor rant: My dog is jealous of the keyboard and computer screen. I can read or work on handheld crafts and she'll happily sit next to me, but the second I pull out my laptop, she must be on top of it! Sigh. Annoying.

Bunnity you really are trying to kill me! I want this dog sooo bad it's not even funny. But alas a) cats and b) even I I could adopt him it wouldn't be until I moved in in August 🙁 he's like my dream dog tho.....🙁

I had a horrible experience with a vet yesterday.

I want to get some large animal experience to apply this cycle; so, I started shadowing a large animal vet because both of the other vets I have shadowed were small animal. So, yesterday was my first time riding with her, and I have talked to her a grand total of one other time.

Apparently, however, there is a list of things wrong with my family and me. First of all, my parents are not supportive enough because they don't want me to live in another geographic region and they want me to minimize my debt. Thus, I'm commuting to school all four years. I agree that it might not be the best thing to go from living at home to going to vet school in another state; so, I'm planning on living in an apartment in the spring semester when I have time to work more hours to pay for rent. That was where her problems with me started because if your 21 and living at home you can't make decisions on your own apparently. My parents are also going to fight with me during my interviews apparently because they are unsupportive.

I also made the mistake of telling her that I wanted to live at school freshman year, but my parents wouldn't agree to it. Thus, I just accept things because I wouldn't get a loan on my own. I also just accept things because I am letting my brothers show one of my goats at the fair and I help them work with her because I should show her on my own (even though I'm too old to show her in a market show and she has a bad udder which would disqualify her from a breeding show).

In addition, she saw no postive qualities about me that she could put on a resume even though I have had 3 professors and the main vet I work with offer to write me letters of reccomendation. I have no self esteem because when I got into her truck I held her computor which she had on her seat and didn't think enough of myself to place it on the center console. Personally, I would be offended if someone just threw my computer up on the console of the car, but whatever.

I also have no social life. Now, I will admit that I am kind of shy when I meet people sometimes, and yesterday was one of those times because I wanted to make a good impression. However, I did talk to her and ask questions. I've made a lot of progress on it (at work, my nickname is Smiley and I have to talk to a lot of people that I do not know). She asked me if I had any friends at school, and I answered that I had a couple friends at school because most of my friends graduated because they're older than me. She then asked me what I did with me friends specifically if I went to any bars and concerts. I answered that I've only been to a bar once or twice (she didn't give me the chance to add that I've only been 21 for a few weeks). She asked me if there was anything else that I did with them, and I said that I hung out around school with them and most of them are on the cross country team with me. After this, she came to the conclusion that I have no social life. At this point, I had to fight the urge to tell her maybe if she wasn't so busy partying, she would have had better grades in undergrad because she told me she had a C+ average and had to go to a Carribean school (which I honestly don't think there is anything wrong with, but I was really angry at that point).

I also have no passion and drive because obviously working 4 days a week and shadowing 2-3 days a week requires no drive. I have no hobbies, and I'm not interested in anything. I do nothing because I want to. At one point she asked me what I think about all day, and she asked me if I was like a zombie because I couldn't answer that question right away. I'm not observational enough. At one point, she asked me to get her something, and I wasn't sure what she was referering to. So, I went back to ask her and I got yelled at in front of a client for not having it. She also told me that she thought that I could get into vet school, but she doesn't think I will stay in it. She can't see me with a professional degree.

She also asked me if I ever do things on my own (I had never ridden with her before and I didn't know what was expected/allowed because I know the other two clinics where I have shadowed had different duties for me). She asked me what I did for the other vet, and I explained that I helped him (he even offers to pay me for the help I give him, but I don't formally work for him), but I have shadowed with him for over two years. I also had to explain to her how I work on my own at work.

In addition, the main vet that I shadow is too nice to be honest with me and to tell me these things that she came to the conclusion about after meeting me twice. It got better after a point, and she said that she would see me next week. However, I honestly have enough of my low self esteem to try to find another vet to shadow and only go if I absolutely cannot find one within an hour and a half distance. It does make me kind of mad though because she makes everyone who shadows her work with her dad two days a week for a summer, and I did it last summer which is time I could of been shadowing. Her parents are very nice people though, so I assumed their daughter was nice. I've talked to some other people though, and they all seem to share the opinion that its not just me that has problems with her.

if you're talking about requirements for SGU, I seriously doubt it matters. they talk a good talk online for being fancy about computers and technology, but i don't fail to notice i'm in a third world country when i use my computer! no worries 🙂 and the USB ports thing can be easily solved by getting a hub. i used to do that in undergrad when i had more than a couple of things to plug into my computer (mine has 3 USB but one is not in a very good spot)

OMG! Are you serious?! 😡 I can't believe a vet would do this to a future vet student...Can you shadow with anyone else who is not going to put you down like this?

Now, to be on a more encouraging note, don't let this get you down. If being a vet is what you want to do and what you're passionate about doing, then don't let people like her stop you from achieving your dream. Keep your chin up, stay strong, and stay positive. You can do this! 😀

Been there. Was told by a vet that there was no way I was getting into the vet school I wanted, and I should just go become a stockperson! I was nearly in tears riding in this persons truck - seriously the worst two weeks of my life, shadowing that vet.

Wanted to send him all 3 acceptance letters I got that year! Try not to let it get you too down. There are *****holes everywhere, even among vets! And definately don't waste any more time shadowing them - find someone who will really teach you and foster you passion!

You'll probably find out that it's a 1.3 Ghz quad core processor, which operates at a much higher single core frequency (probably at least 2.4 Ghz). The specs the school quoted are for a single core processor, so you're most likely fine.

I would be really, really sure it isn't up to par (Pentium III processors came out in the 20th century, so I can almost guarantee anything these days will be able to handle it, even a tablet has at least that much processing power) before confronting him. I know if I did something like that, and it was up to spec, and my GF said it wasn't going to cut it, I'd be upset not only at her looking a gift horse in the mouth, but also that she didn't exhaust all avenues of information to make sure it indeed wasn't up to spec.

If it actually wasn't up to spec, then I'd feel stupid, but own the mistake, and not hold it against her. Can you post a link to the specs for the laptop?

My moving plans got all messed up due to other people's schedules, which is not the other person's fault, but now I am having to rely on my father's offer of help. Which is nice and all, but we don't actually get along that well and I want to strangle him already.

2 days ago: No, the 3 cats won't fit in the cab of the Uhaul if you want to tow the car. No, they can't just ride in the car, they would die because there's no AC on in a towed car and it'll be August. NO, we cannot just crack a window. 😱 Why don't we just put them on the roof like Mitt Romney does with his dog?! Also I don't want to be stuck in an enclosed space with you for 3 days! And you do NOT want to be in the car with my deaf cat. We are not towing the GD car, end of story.

Today: No, that's a bad idea. No, that sounds considerably more complicated. No, I am perfectly capable of planning another cross-country move without your considerable assistance. I've only done this once or 4 times.

While I appreciate that he wants to be involved/in-charge, and I appreciate that he is also offering monetary assistance, this is going to drive me absolutely bonkers.

Sounds awful . Just keep in mind that it will all be worth it soon, because you're moving to VET SCHOOL!!!

So my maternal grandma had a stroke. Now, she's a tough one. She had a heart attack 10 years ago and had a quadruple bypass surgery done, had a couple of minor strokes while recovering and still managed to regain almost 100% function. She had some issues with one of her hands afterwards but otherwise has been pretty functional, though since my grandpa died 5 years ago she's had to move into the nursing home owned by the other side of my family, which has honestly had its own toll on her as she has always been a very independent and headstrong person.

Honestly I'm pretty torn. Having known her, and knowing how much she fiercely values her independence, I almost feel like if this is going to debilitate her further (and, there's almost no doubt it will...it happened on Sunday and she's still pretty minimally responsive), maybe it's for the better if this is the end for her and we all let her go. But I don't know if that's really an "okay" thing to think. I realize that my point of view may be unpopular, so I don't really know how to discuss it with my mom. And I'm sure that makes me look like a jerk, because when she mentioned it to me I just kind of avoided the topic completely.

Keep in mind that I am completely across the country, so it is pretty easy logistically for me to stay detached and uninvolved. I just don't know if I'm taking the "easy" way out by doing so.

I'm so sorry nyanko! Situations like this are tough because I know you just want what's best for her and what would make her happy. Losing independence definitely isn't it. It's been so hard to see my grandma in the situation she's in currently, to hear directly from her how unhappy this makes her and how she just wants to go home and back to how it was. I would do anything to change things for her, as I'm sure you'd do the same for yours.

Hang in there, I know it never sounds right to say some things out loud, but when it comes down to a persons happiness and the quality of life, I feel the same way you do.

You'll probably find out that it's a 1.3 Ghz quad core processor, which operates at a much higher single core frequency (probably at least 2.4 Ghz). The specs the school quoted are for a single core processor, so you're most likely fine.

I think it's a dual core processor, I don't know that much about processors though.

I would be really, really sure it isn't up to par (Pentium III processors came out in the 20th century, so I can almost guarantee anything these days will be able to handle it, even a tablet has at least that much processing power) before confronting him. I know if I did something like that, and it was up to spec, and my GF said it wasn't going to cut it, I'd be upset not only at her looking a gift horse in the mouth, but also that she didn't exhaust all avenues of information to make sure it indeed wasn't up to spec.

If it actually wasn't up to spec, then I'd feel stupid, but own the mistake, and not hold it against her. Can you post a link to the specs for the laptop?

I have a call in (got voicemail TWICE now, yesterday and today) to the computing support for the school to see if their claim is based on anything specific, like a program it has to run, at which point I will test that program and see, but I couldn't open it up, play with it and be all excited if I knew it had to go back.

if you're talking about requirements for SGU, I seriously doubt it matters. they talk a good talk online for being fancy about computers and technology, but i don't fail to notice i'm in a third world country when i use my computer! no worries 🙂 and the USB ports thing can be easily solved by getting a hub. i used to do that in undergrad when i had more than a couple of things to plug into my computer (mine has 3 USB but one is not in a very good spot)

I think the second rub is that I have been dreaming of a nice, new spiffy laptop for vet school. This one is nice and new but has no new ports or features that make it super cool. I need to calm myself and accept what it is, if it will work for school. But I still feel like I got cheated out of the new awesomeness.

Another rant: Co-worker/former trainer is taking issue with everything I say today. Either my griping about stuff is over the line for real, which I don't believe, or she needs to let my comments roll by instead of trying to refute everything I say. Comments do not equal not doing my job. If I say that I think the employee is having me call facilities because he thinks it must be the alarm's fault he set it off, I don't need to hear "but it really could be a malfunction" because I'm already making the call to facilities so they can check it out.
If I say "The student employee doesn't own band-aids? when his partner comes in to get him some more department band-aids for a small cut on his hand he got yesterday morning... I'm musing aloud, not suggesting we deny him band-aids. Thus I don't need to hear "well he got injured on the job yesterday just let him have the band-aids and here take him an extra."

I am done with the BS of this job. Usually I am all nice, this job is starting to test my patience and this co-worker is only adding to it.

It is juust outside for me.
I get the basics on the processor being able to perform out of order processes and with two cores get more done than a basic processor operating at 2Ghz

But I'd like to know more, for the geek in me 😀

Yes, it will exceed the specs you posted for performance by a fairly large margin, processor-wise.
