Yuck! The news said norovirus (that's the V/D virus that I'm hoping like heck I DON'T get), flu virus, and whooping cough are all spreading like wildfire 👎

i have 7 days left in the US and I am TERRIFIED that I am going to catch one of these wretched illnesses before I leave. It is like 99.999% likely that I'll get something either on the plane or from my classmates who just flew on planes too the first week of class though :annoyed:

I do not enjoy calling government agencies. I'm nicely trying to update my address so my tax forms get sent to the correct address, no need to be jerk 😡

but with a 40% national first-time pass rate, maybe I SHOULD. This thing is a monster of an exam....

You're already taking boards? Or is it that you have to study that far in advance?

Either way, good luck! :luck::luck::luck:

My problem kitty is squinting and had quite a bit of clear discharge today. So much for using my extra holiday pay on something fun.

I take them in September. You usually have to begin seriously preparing at least a full year in advance, more like a year and a half with all the organizing it takes. There are 4 sections:

1. Gross pathology: You are shown an image (a liver, lung, whatever) for 30-60sec and you have to give it a diagnosis and cause, and sometimes other questions like pathogenesis, special stains, histologic characteristics, other organs affected etc. This includes ALL species, everything from dog/cat to dolphins to fish to camels. They can throw anything at you, bacterial, viral, developmental, toxic, neoplasia, etc. A lot of diseases look very similar so you need to have a super eye for detail. I have to be able to, for example, tell a Mycoplasma pneumonia from a Mannheima pneumonia just on sight.

2.Histo: You get a bunch of slides and have to fully describe them in a timed setup. Same huge variance of species, organ, and disease process. You have about 12 minutes per slide to not only figure out WTF it is but write a full description, cause, etc. It goes on for a few hours and it brutal. I also needt o know basic cytology and electron microscopy.

3 and 4 are General Pathology and Veterinary Pathology. They are multiple choice, INCREDIBLY detailed, and cover

1) About half a dozen or more huge books including Robbins, Percy, Jubb & Kennedy, clin path stuff, etc and

2) The abstracts/major points of every article in about 6 or 7 different journals going back 2-3 years (so, about a few thousand papers) :scared: including review articles from Nature, New England Journal of Medicine, etc.

My dad just had me send an email to the Dean of Academic Affairs, copied to the president of the school 🙂eek🙂. Whatever, if it works I'll be thrilled.

IT WORKED! They sent it by UPS and it should be there Monday (aka the day before the deadline)! :soexcited:

WTF you make me so glad I have no desire whatsoever to become a pathologist. :barf:

 It takes a special subtype of nerd. A masochistic one.

No,no. I really do LOVE my work. I really do. But yeah, boards are crazy. At least, if you pass 3 out of 4 sections, you only have to take the last one again (or if you pass 2/4, only the 2 you failed). However, they are only given 1x a year and cost $700 just to register. It really is scary that it's a 40% pass rate (first time pass rate - the overall pass rate is higher) when you only need a 60% in each section to pass. It's NAVLE on a massive dose of cellular biology steroids. Thankfully, people from my program have an 80-90% first-time pass rate,so I feel like I am being well-prepared.

Every now and then I think I might want to be a pathologist. Then I remember the above and run away screaming.

Not sure if anyone remembers my Dr. B from the old practice but...
One of the techs told me that my having several interviews for vet school came up the other day there. First Dr. B didn't believe I had interviews at all and then said, "well just because she has interviews doesn't mean she's getting in." She doesn't know anything about my stats, and has asked me like 6 times what my plans are for after undergrad and forgets every time I tell her. I did not ask her for a recommendation because she is so fickle it would have totally depended on her mood whether I was a incompetent fool or perfect fit for the field. She and her office manager have informed me multiple times that I wouldn't get in with out them. I would like to say I'm a bigger person, but I really just want to say told you so with an acceptance (or two, I wouldn't complain).

And really this should go in the rave thread because seriously, thank the friggin lord I don't work there anymore. I haven't been working at the new practice long and they are rooting for me 100%. So screw you Dr. B and thank god I'm rid of you.

That makes me think you should send an oh so polite thank you letter to the old practice, thanking them for all their help in preparing you for the field, because of them you have multiple acceptances and can choose the school of your dreams, and oh, you are looking forward to joining them as professional colleagues in just a few short years.

lol I did a similar thing to a practice that kind of treated me poorly.

I had a similar situation last year. I was told that I would never get into Ohio State by a vet I worked with. He was new to the practice and didn't really know me. Then I got the letters and calls. Ohio State was my first interview and acceptance. Just keep doing what you are doing, regardless of what other people say. They don't know who you are and what you are capable of.

So now that I've been accepted to graduate school.......

My mother is suddenly an expert. 🙄 How admissions work, how the profs will see me, what to do when I meet them, etc. I'm the first grad student in my family and my mother's experience with graduate school comes from me talking about admissions and a former coworker she knows in a totally different program.

This is going to be a long 6+ months until I leave...

I have volunteered with a Great Dane rescue for two years. I absolutely love the breed... I decided if I get into vet school that I will finally adopt one to be my buddy at school... Tonight the rescue president got in touch with me because they have been surrendered 2 litters of puppies and she wanted me to have the option to have one.. Of course my dad said No. 🙁

I'm really sad because they never have puppies that come through the rescue. And this was the perfect time to get one and train him before potentially moving. I know this is a silly rant but I'm pretty bummed. I just don't think it's a good idea to adopt a dog as soon as I move away to school. Any dog should already be comfortable with me and have a routine before starting fresh wherever I could end up. Ugh. 🙁

I'm sorry, that really sucks 🙁 I love Danes as well and I'm planning on getting one as soon as I can. Maybe you could convince your dad to go with you to "just look" at them? That's how I got my first puppy lol my dad couldn't say no once he saw the cute cuddly little thing. But, you'd still have the option to adopt an adult Dane. I'm sure you know there are plenty out there and the fact that they are usually house trained and don't need a ton of supervision during the day can make it easier if you're going to be in school. Of course, that'll depend on the specific dog, but it's something to consider! Puppies really are adorable, but an adult dog might be less demanding.

As soon as I move out sometime at the end of the summer I'm planning on getting a Dane 🙂 My parents wouldn't have a problem with it, but I think my dogs might not like having a strange giant in the house lol

Good luck! I hope you can work something out!

It is amazing how much snobbery there exists in vet med. You'd think that those who have already "made it," whether they're in vet school or already DVM's, could resist or overcome their insecurities and petty jealousies, but nope. In fact, they're often the worst snobs.

Oh yes, I had figured I would end up with an adult, and I was happy with that . They are definitely less demanding. I think my biggest frustration is that he expects me to get one when I move... Which is not exactly good timing.. Perfect timing would be right now so that there would be plenty of time to train and get into a routine so that by the time school starts the pup would be right at 9 months and passed the crazy puppy stage. Even if I adopted an adult Dame I think I should have him/her before moving so that I can start working on training . Blah frustrated.

Topic close to my heart.

I'm the first in my immediate family to be in grad school too. I don't know what your relationship is like but it helped me to literally sit my mother down and tell her directly what I expect from her (basically emotional support and a sympathetic ear). Now whenever she starts getting overbearing or insulting about my academics, I just remind her what I see as her role in my ADULT life. It usually shuts her up pretty quickly.

It's hard because I still live at home. 🤣 My friend has suggested to just say that I'll take into consideration everything she's saying so she thinks I'm listening, but then she gets offended when I don't use her "brilliant" advice or I do something she thinks is wrong.

I cannot wait to be far away from here and her advice. 🤣 I do like her (most days), but geez.

I work at the emergency clinic in town and I am here tonight until 8am in the morning and all we've done so far is euthanize one dog. Im bored.

It might not be best for you to get one right after you move for yourself either. Personally I told myself I needed time to develop a new routine once I got to vet school and I gave myself the first semester without adding any pets. Right after finals I started looking at rescues. I ended up finding the perfect dog for my family (though he's cost us quite a bit in the past week). I know this may not be best for you, but it is something to think about.

For the past 2+ years my older brother has been living in my apartment. Originally, this was going to be a temporary situation, but, since I'm such an awesome little sister who cooks, cleans, and loves making a really comfortable dwelling that resembles a home and not a college apartment, he, for whatever reason, doesn't want to leave.

To add to the matter, he lives in my study room, so throughout my MPH I have not been able to sit down at my desk and work. I'm sure as most realize working on the couch by the TV is not ideal and working on manuscripts and biostats from my bed, also not ideal.

Unfortunately, my parents pretend to understand the inconvenience and believe that "throwing money" at the problem will make it go away. So they pay his part of the rent and have started buying our groceries when they're in town. While this temporarily cools my annoyance, it doesn't address the problem. So my mom will tell me things like, "Why don't you find him a nice studio to live in?" I don't know, maybe because I'm busy with a thesis-type project and he's old enough to find his own damn apartment.

Despite living together, we live very separate lives. We have our own vehicles and our own schedules. We don't hang out outside the apartment and we don't have mutual friends.

.... and he eats all of my candy. 😡

I totally agree. I don't want to get one right after moving. It takes time after adopting to let them acclimate to their new environment.. And I won't have a lot of time after moving... (This is all best case scenario, assuming I get accepted somewhere lol :xf: ) if I can't get one before moving then I'm looking at next summer possibly as the best time.. Which is just so long from now!!

👍👍👍

I have one of the most low maintenance dogs and there are times where I know it would be easier to not have one at all. If she goes while I'm in school, I don't intend to get another dog, puppy or adult, until I'm out. My advice is to at least wait until you've got one semester under your belt and then re-evaluate. School is such a giant time committment, even when you aren't actively at the school in the classroom.

I was also thinking about the summer before leaving to adopt. I was thinking it might be a bonding experience for both person and dog to face the unknown together and to get one right after you settle in at vet school, but then I thought the dog might react to your uncertainty and find it less comforting that you are there.

Great Danes FTW! I want to adopt a younger one, but not a puppy. They have such short life spans, it's hard to decide how old is too old :/

On an unrelated note, I just had my bunion removed last Monday, and this marks the beginning of the second week I have had to STAY IN BED with my foot elevated. I haven't even left this floor of my house because of all the stairs and my lack of expertise with crutches. I am SO BORED, and my back is starting to hurt from laying in the same spot for so long 🙁

Anyway, I am worried because I'm not supposed to put any pressure on it, but yesterday, I was trying to help my little, old dog off my bed and I lost balance while leaning on said bed, and slipped down to the ground, with my bad foot carrying all the weight. It definitely hurt when it hit the ground, and I'm worried I messed up the screws in there, or something. Doesn't hurt this morning, though...firt post-op appt tomorrow, guess I'll find out if I messed up the doc's work...

So did you give yourself bad juju by saying the dreaded/banned "B" word?!?!

When I worked ER, that was the worst thing you could say. I love ER BTW 🙂

So my ears are acting funny. They keep popping and it is super annoying. I blew my nose and that is what started it. So now I have to deal with "Oh, I am deaf" "Oh, I can hear!". Can I just go home?

Depends on the school, but some have a decent amount of time over Christmas break. But don't rush into. You'll find the dog who's perfect for you.

Yeah thats kinda what I was hoping would happen. However nothing except 3 am phone calls asking about dogs and labor. The women had never bred dogs before and knew nothing of course. She called multiple times with questions and I talked her through it. She called me and ask to talk to me just wanted to let me know she had a puppy and again to say the
final count was six. She was so thankful. I spared her my dont breed mutts speech.

This is exactly how my parents "deal" with my leech of a younger brother (no college education, can't hold down a job due to laziness, already has a kid by a girl whom he dated for a few months and they decided to get married and have a baby - guess how long that lasted constantly losing his driver's license due to tickets, etc).... It's incredibly frustrating. They had just bought him his third car (he's 22...first one was "old", second one was because he "needed a bigger/safer one for the baby" and the third one because the second one "reminded him of his ex"....) hey guys, can I have a new car? You know, the sibling that is actually DOING something with her life? Or maybe help me with my school debt since you can evidently pay for his rent (with his new gf who he moved in with after two weeks) and food?

When I was in high school, my mother flat-out told my older sister that she bugged the two of us for owed money and did NOT bug the others (2 of whom were especially fond of "borrowing") because we actually paid her back. Great way to encourage the responsible ones, ma :annoyed:

Then you are better than me cause I would of popped off with some statistics about the number of unwanteds. And scare tactics about c-sections and costs and what can go wrong....

We had a rescue dog in on Thursday that needed an emergency c-section. I 😍 c-sections. 7 babies born (5 F and 2 M). I was busy with momma and a propofol cri and directing ppl on how to do the pups. Not my ideal but all puppies made it and I got them on nipples for first nursing before they left. Can't wait to see them on recheck! 😀

I did a gentle version of this on my hairdresser last time I got a cut... she was talking about her pit bull and how her boyfriend kept trying to convince her to breed her, and all I could think of was ALL of the pits I've seen at our neighborhood shelters. I just had to tread carefully because she was wielding very sharp scissors near my head, haha.

Been there with BOTH of my brothers. But one was a druggie/thief so it was easy to boot him. :meanie:

The other one took me an entire year to get the courage up to boot him out. He needed a push to be out on his own and stop being lazy and mooching off of other people. He's the greatest brother in the world, which made it even harder. Lost his job and started playing computer games 24/7 and not actually job searching. Eating all my food. 😡

Now he's living in his own apartment, has been in the Army National Guard for 3 years and is doing great!

Sometimes you gotta be the one to give them the tough love and push they need. 😉

Took a risk by ordering a textbook from a seller on Amazon that did not have any reviews because I also happen to be an occasional seller with no reviews.

Yeah. Bad idea.

He sent me a message early January saying he'd been very busy and hadn't shipped it yet (they are supposed to ship within 2-4 days and it had been about 5-6) but would do it the very next day. Fine.

6 days later, the package was still listed as "shipping soon." I figured he just didn't know to update it, but I messaged him to be sure and ask where it was coming from. He responded that he hadn't shipped it yet because he's been busy. He apologized and said I could cancel the order if I wanted.

I requested a cancellation. We're done, right?

Just now (3 days after request), my order has been shipped. I sent him a polite WTF message and said I'll be refusing the order so make sure I'm not charged.

This is such a waste of my energy.

I got my MRI results of my head and yet again they say its normal. I'm sorry but facial numbness, acute facial pain, and muscle twitching( eye, cheek, tongue) is NOT normal, and something is causing it.

Just bled a turkey and put the 55ml of blood into a container... which then spilled all over the front of my pants. 😡

I'm now stuck at work for the rest of the day wearing turkey blood splattered pants. Good thing I have a lab coat I can wear.

Can my cold go away now? It is just annoying. I have to admit though that I am lucky. (knock on wood) All I have heard was the cold/flu going around this year are terrible. I just have a stuffed nose that is getting sore, some sneezing, and occasional coughing.

Same here. I feel VERY lucky for now. I've had sneezing and slight nasal congestion for over a week now, and that's the worst I've had. However, I've been very very tired, so I feel like something is trying to take over my body and my body is just saying NO!

:xf: that's the worst we get!
