If it's any consolation, one time my mom had a heart attack scare (it ended up being a fibromyalgia flare) and I didn't find out until days later. Sometimes in emergencies it's hard to contact people until things settle. Hope she's okay!
My family is going through a lot of drama right now....so it's getting hard to communicate. She also knew I had a final so I don't think she wanted me to know.
I'm so sorry, Pinkpuppy. 🙁 I really hope everything turns out all right and that your exams wind up getting delayed so that you can be with her... that's really scary.

My own mom actually went to the hospital last night thinking she was having a heart attack, but it turned out to be gallstones, of all things; she's going in for her surgery tonight. But I totally understand the worry.
I talked to my dad and he assured me that the doc is absolutely not concerned at all (other than the myocarditis of course), so I think I'm just going to take my exams as scheduled. If anything changes, though, I'll be driving for sure. If she's feeling pretty bad I'll probably leave this weekend and miss the next week of school. My mom has never had any serious health problems before, it's usually my dad being rushed to the ER so this is a little weird for all of us.
That must be terrifying. I'm so sorry this happened. Your mother's in my thoughts.
Thanks, I appreciate it 🙂

My mom is hospitalized with myocarditis and a possible heart attack 🙁 Not to mention my finals are tomorrow/Friday, and no one was going to tell me about this if my sister didn't think to text me. I'm hoping I'm allowed to delay my exam. She's stable and fairly comfortable now, but if anything changes, I'll be making the drive.

*hugs* Hang in there! It's never easy dealing with vet school while personal things are happening at the same time. I hope she feels better!

That's not appropriate. What exhibitor was it?

I can't remember the name of the company, will have to look it up. But they were selling aloe products (mainly for people but they could allegedly be used on pets too). There were multiple salespeople there, but the one man was especially rude. When I asked if there were free samples (even after he pointed out my acne), he snarkily replied that they were just sale prices or travel size or something. Given that there were free samples at most booths, I didn't think it was that bad of a question. It's like dude, you want people to like you and buy your stuff, you better be nice. It sounds like multiple people had issues with this fellow.

If you find the name, go ahead and PM me it and I can pass it on to the OVMA staff.

The exhibitors are supposed to follow certain rules and be respectful of the conference attendees.

I spent the evening after work "shadowing" at the shelter for a potential job as an adoption counselor. The guy I was working with was nice, but he had been told that the biggest hesitation in hiring me would be my future goals, i.e. if I get into vet school I would be leaving the position before the end of the summer. Today was the fourth time in two and a half weeks that I've gone over to discuss this job. My future goals haven't changed since the first interview so I don't know why they continue to string me along and bring me in if they're looking for a long term (but still part time) worker. Plus, they're now shifting the hours toward weekday afternoons which would make it nearly impossible to hold another job/internship at a traditional 9-5 type business.

@pinkpuppy9 how's your mom doing?

Thank you for asking, Minner. She feels like crap, but has been feeling better than she was earlier this week. They switched up her meds at the last minute (they told her she would be going home this AM) and are going to keep her another night for monitoring. She's on beta-blockers and a diuretic. I'm glad it wasn't a heart attack, because her father has had a lot of cardiac issues. We were worried she was starting those already. I suspect that the stress she's been under (we're going through some family problems right now) may not have helped her much, either. I think she's just going to be taking it easy for the next several months, which will annoy her because her first grandchild is coming at the end of May!

I'm kind of mad at myself for pushing myself to take my exams..I thought I'd be fine but I'm a little bit on-edge over all of this happening at once. I almost broke down into tears during my anatomy practical for no reason, haha. Oh well....I'll know next time. I just didn't feel right asking to post-pone my exam when she was perfectly stable and just being monitored. I may elect to go home this weekend instead of waiting until Wednesday.

Glad to hear she's stable. If you can, go home and don't wait!

Levees are being breached, 5000+ homes have been evacuated, and things are absolute chaos. Someone made mention of the fact that the people who relocated to North LA post-Katrina are being flooded out of their homes a second time. That absolutely hurt my heart. The national guard has done an amazing job of getting people to safety. 5 deaths is bad but it could be much worse. Send LA lots of good juju please.

Were your parents able to stay put, or did they have to evacuate? Sending you guys good juju.

They were safe were they were. One of the very few neighborhoods that stayed moderately dry!

To add, our old neighbors just called to tell me that my childhood home had water up to the kitchen window (which was 6 feet off of the ground!). I know I moved out a while ago but man, that was just so hard to hear. So many memories there... As for neighbors water is still in their house tonight, and they can't find any of their 5 cats 🙁

One of my puppies is at the vet school in Iowa. Her owners are amazing, so of course the pup gets the weird illness no one can figure out. 🙁 If anybody sees a floppy eared, orange speckled puppy in internal medicine - give her a kiss.

Something went wrong with the program that controls the locking mechanism on all of the residence hall doors on campus, so no one's prox cards work on any of the doors. I ended up getting locked out from midnight until about 2 AM when my boss figured out how to manually open the doors (which was fun since I had to be up at 5 to catch a flight). My poor friend in a different building ended up having to sleep on the floor in the lobby.

The best part is it's still not fixed. I bet a compete reboot of the system would probably fix a lot of the issues but no one in the department will let the lock people reboot because they're concerned that none of the doors will lock after doing it and they can't deal with that kind of a security issue.

That new client who comes to you because they don't like their previous vet for whatever reason, but declines your recommendations because it's not how previous vet did things.

"How come my previous vet did/didn't tell me/do this!?"

Dude, all I can explain is why I'm recommending my plan. I'm not a ****ing psychic. Either you are remembering/understood things incorrectly, or your other vet was a quack. Probably the former, but the latter is possible.

Discovered last night that when a mortgage lender calls to discuss buying your first house, it is not wise to have that conversation while using a microtome to section paraffin-fixed tissues.

On the bright side, I could have made a lovely section of the side of my thumb, and when I got the bleeding to slow enough for me to see, I got a great look at some of the internal anatomy...

I've done that too unfortunately. The blade was sharp enough that it actually didn't hurt though. Meanwhile, the stitches definitely were not fun.

Yeah, it didn't hurt at all when it happened! I actually wasn't sure I'd cut it because my glove looked okay (black nitrile so I couldn't see the amount of blood filling the thumb part)... then I pulled the glove off and went "oh."

Haha yeah, that was my same reaction! I could see the cut in the blue glove though, so I went to a lab mate and calmly said we needed to go to the hospital. My cut was deep enough to see bone, so I knew it was bad.

Jeez... If the flooding wasn't enough, we are now under tornado watch!

Two of my three emergencies today had been going on for 4 days. But now they want to do something about it....

Of course! That's a lot of emergency medicine. Animals that have been sick for days but now on this here Saturday at 2AM it is emergent. Oh and they at pissy that you are taking so long because it is early in the morning and they are tired and the dog was waking them up/keeping them awake.

The only upside was that both came in during the afternoon. And I got paid. But still, come on people... Four days and now you're worried?

Anyone else keep seeing the "Nylabones cause seizures!" post on Facebook? I know when my dog had his first seizure, the first and only thing I did was ask Google for help and then share my findings with the internet.

The whole client waiting days to report an emergency thing is awful... It happened with my aunt's dogs! They were violently ill for days and they did nothing about it and the dogs died on a Saturday... This is the second time this has happened to them! Of course the next thing they did was call me Sunday and ask "the new acceptee" for medical advice... :boom:

By the way, can you trim his nails?

When you work a 12 hour shift knowing you are coming home to awesome leftovers for dinner, only to find out you're roommate threw them away! didn't even eat them, just threw them away.

Been having some decent upper back/neck pain today. It wasn't quite as bad earlier in the day, but then I bent down to pick something up just prior to my physical therapy session and made it worse.

Two of my three emergencies today had been going on for 4 days. But now they want to do something about it....
One that sticks out in my mind is a case where the dog had been consistently vomiting/ADR for somewhere around 3 weeks. The owner finally brought her in on emergency one day, but she died during the drive to the clinic. The owner wanted to end up jumping on the Beneful lawsuit because she knew "that's what killed her dog." I think it ended up looking like pancreatitis when we did a post and sent out samples.

Also, today makes 3 very young friends of mine who have been diagnosed with some scary cancers (well, all are scary) within the past month. Not that I think cancer is an 'old person's' disease, but come on.

Extinguish their bloodline, salt the earth with their remains
Oh I gladly would currently. They were "cleaning out the fridge before they left for spring break." It's MY food!!! I will be here all except one night!! And guess what's even better is that they didn't even throw away a Tupperware of their own ancient leftovers in the fridge. ughhhhhh.

Dog peed on my bed today. On the new comforter. On the newly changed sheets. Thank god for mattress protectors but you have GOT to be kidding me, we're at my parent's house right now so it's probably the change in environment but seriously, she's been back here a bunch of times and basically grew up at this house.

I absolutely HATE having horrible customer service experiences! Seriously, if you are going to work in customer service, don't treat paying guests as annoyances or inconveniences. Especially when their personal safety is at stake... I also hate when employees lie to cover their own butt. If you are going to act a certain way, be prepared to face the consequences when higher management is informed.

Ughhhhhh :rage:

I have the kind of parents who keep important information from you when they don't want to bother you. I understand that they do it out of love, but when you text me and say call when you have a chance, and then blindside me with "oh by the way grandpa passed away this morning" I'm going to wonder what the heck went wrong recently that you didn't tell me about. I mean, I knew his health wasn't amazing, but this was fairly unexpected give the lack of updates on anything recently. sigh 😢
