Aren't there any professional pet sitters in the area you could hire? When I was in vet school, I hired one regularly to look after my guinea pigs whenever I went home for Christmas break. She did a fantastic job.

If in a large hospital with 14 interns, I'm sure there are techs you could barter with or hire too. Any options there?

One of my favorite patients died at the ER during surgery for a foreign body 🙁 we had told the owners a week ago it was likely she had one in her stomach and referred them to a specialist but they waited and by the time they went to the ER it had perfed her intestines and she was septic. I'm gonna miss that dog 🙁
 
Small rant, but my CTF program was a total flop last night cause it was flat too cold for residents to be running around, let alone my poor RAs standing around. Not to mention last week was spring break and next week is Easter break, so this would be the only weekend students would be able to party with friends in town. We lasted 35 minutes out of our two hour time slot. We were so excited for this program. My RAs specifically requested that they be on the CTF instead of LARPing next month. But I guess that's what happens when you plan your big programs for spring back at the end of fall. Next time, CTF should be an August or September program.

Our Easter Break is actually called "Spring Break" and our Spring Break is actually called "Midterm Break" cause Easter is a religious holiday and we're state ran/funded. Easter Break is only Friday at 6 pm until Monday at 6 pm (three day weekend). No big. Although, the weekend after that is also a "break" cause we have Scholastics Day were high schools come compete for scholarships, so there aren't any classes. So next week is a three day week for the students in between two three day weekends. For me, I still work next Friday cause it's also called Case Day were people spend the entire day drinking for fun. Which, as long as they don't do it in the dorms, it's fine.
 
My patient's owners stopped by the hospital unannounced today and decided to euthanize. Since it was unannounced, I wasn't there, and I'm a bit upset that I wasn't able to be there for them.
 
Have a lot to get done before a knee surgery on Thurs. It's been bad but not unbearable with lots of rest, ice, NSAIDs. Until today. Today my knee decided I can't put very much weight on it without buckling and pain.
 
Wish I could take my two coworkers' cell phones and hide them in some random drawer because they will not stop f-ing texting while on the floor. The other day, we had an appointment waiting, and the two of them were busy dicking around with their phones while the client sat up front, waiting patiently. It's such a frustrating situation because there's zero supervision on the floor unless a doctor happens to notice something (and it's not their job to police what support staff do all the time), and the rest of us are all on the same level, so there's no one to pull rank and say "put your f-ing phone away" without creating all sorts of drama and conflict. Management has addressed it repeatedly in meetings, but crazy enough, talking about it and then doing nothing to enforce it doesn't work. Who'd have thought that would happen? :smack:

My car is falling apart and I don't have money for a new one (let alone to fix my current one). Clinics start in a little over a month and it would be nice to have a car I could rely on. 🙁
 
Just found out that the parents of a good friend went to her house while she was at work and took her cat to the vet without her permission to have her euthanized/sent out for testing... All because the vet tech mentioned there were 2 confirmed rabies cases in the area in the past 6 months and the cat's neurological problems resembled that of rabies... She's had the symptoms for weeks and the vet thought it was due to chronic ear infections. Not to mention, she's been strictly indoors since infancy. I'm at a loss for words 🙁

Holy crap. That's absolutely awful... I'm so sorry for your friend. I couldn't even imagine how I'd feel if my parents did something like that.

I know.. She's been updating me throughout the whole ordeal over the last few days and I'm just shocked. Sweetest cat ever. And my friend is extremely non-confrontational so she hasn't even confronted her parents. They just texted her. They texted to her to tell her about her dead cat that they had killed without her consent. I would seriously never speak to my parents again... It's so sad. I can't even say anything to comfort her because there are no words...

Non-confrontational or not, she needs to let her parents know that they were wrong. Wrong doesn't even cover it. And then she needs to take back whatever key they used to get into her place, and not give them a new one for a very long time. Maybe never.

Oh my god, that is horrible and so sad. I would change my locks, and never speak to my parents again. I can't even imagine.

Thanks everyone. And yes, I told her that they could seriously get in a lot of trouble for that, the vet included. But she told me the vet has known her parents for a long time so probably didn't question that they had her permission to do it. Still... It's awful.

When an animal is brought in for euthanasia, there is a consent form that has to be signed. The person has to state that they are the owner of said animal and that they therefore have the right to decide to euthanize it. Once they sign that, the vet is off the hook legally. It is not the vet's job to keep track of the ownership of every single animal that is brought to them. If people say they own the animal and sign a statement to that effect, then the vet assumes they are telling the truth. This is all on the parents. And I agree, I would never have anything to do with them again.

Yes, but wouldn't it be considered that the vet knows the family personally and my friend has been the caretaker of the cat it's whole life? She's the one that's been in and out of the vet's office with the cat for her whole life, not the parents... At the clinic I worked in, the vet wouldn't euthanize a dog once because the husband brought the dog in and the wife was the only one listed on the file (and she was the only one we had ever seen with the dog). It turns out they were going through a divorce and he was trying to get back at her by killing the dog. I think he just ended up going somewhere else though, but still. Wouldn't there be some fault on the vet if they knew who the true owner was?

Didn't you also say the vet was treating the cat for a possible chronic ear infections? I would have thought the vet would have tried to talk them out of it knowing the history.

Yep, chronic ear infections and she was recently spayed last week. The symptoms didn't start until after surgery so he also thought that the meds might have something to do with it. He also said that it could have been distemper? Idk. I don't get it. My friend says she thinks he's been really nervous because of the rabies cases, since apparently the only way they caught them was because of the animals attacking humans. I just don't know

I've seen similar cases. Because of it, most of the vets I've worked for would not have euthanized in this case without at least talking to the owner on the phone.
And this was even during a rabies outbreak when the 2 biggest divorce euthanasia cases happened. The spouse said they would bring the dog to a different clinic, but at least at that time, a lot of the clinics all talked to each other so he was stopped at 3 other clinics in the area.

I would think it strange if a client's parents brought their animal in for euthanasia. If their names did not match the names on file I may want to call and ask the person listed on file. I'd likely ask them why that person wasn't present. But it's easy enough for them to lie and say something like they couldn't handle the emotional aspect or whatever and I wouldn't ask further probing questions. Really not the vet's fault, however sad the situation is 🙁
 
People are sometimes baffling to me.

I was working registration at a conference last month. In the 40+ hours over the course of four days that I worked, I only had one person come up and be hostile and unpleasant with me. This person was so busy complaining about her problems, parking, membership dues, the other conference attendees, etc. that she didn't correct the spelling of her name - not once but twice- during my interaction with her. I only found this out today when I was going over name lists and came across her actual, correctly spelled name and thought, "that's her." No wonder I couldn't find her in the system (she changed her e-mail too which also ended up misspelled because it contained her name).

I'm definitely amused by this, but also upset because she made me create a duplicate account in the system which I then had to "clean up."

Friend comes over for us to cook big dinner after turning in our theses last night. Assuming we would all be responsible with our dishes since we both cooked, I washed mine and put them away as soon as I was done eating. I leave for 30 minutes to finish some homework before I go to take him home, assuming he'd clean up after himself. Nope, he leaves every single plate out, with food caked on it, like not even offering to help. It was literally 15 dishes because I just now had to wash them all, because I finally had time. Not to mention that were piled up on the 20+ dishes my roommate hasn't done in 3 weeks... Speaking of roommate she slammed a door in my face for being too loud while I was trying to clean. Guys, it's been a long day and I just want to sit down and eat my burger.

That is just awful... I would be absolutely livid if I was her.... she must be a wreck 🙁.

It really is. Honestly though, she's acting really... weird. Maybe just in shock still, but she was defending her parents because they were "only trying to do what was best" for her. Idk... If it were me, I would legitimately never speak to them again. She is extremely upset because that cat was her baby, but she definitely isn't handling the situation like I would expect. However, she's way closer to her parents than I am mine, so I understand her point of view 🙁 it's so sad. I'm so sad for her. I hope they feel like complete idiots when her results come back negative for rabies....

I'm pretty freaking close to my parents and if they did this to me, I would be livid. I'm with you; it would be a long time, if ever, before I would talk to them again. There would be no "they're just looking out for me" on my end. I'm a big kid and can decide whether or not my pet has rabies based on my vet's opinion and what to do with that information. It's not their decision to make and a non-rabies animal lost it's life for absolutely no good reason. That's unacceptable. And, as Minner said, this is criminal on several levels. It's theft since pets are property. I would imagine it would also be destruction of property as the pet is now dead. I bet a creative attorney could pile on other stuff. There are certainly people who would have no problem selling their parents out to the police over something like this.
 
Dear SEPTA,

People standing at the bus stop means you stop and see if they want to get on. Not just blow by the stop because the light is green. If I now have to pay at least 3x the amount to get to my appointment on time, I'm going to be annoyed.
 
Not really a septa rant, but I wanted to study on the train for my neuro exam tomorrow. I get on the train and it's packed so I don't get a seat. Hard to study that way. Then I realize I got on the wrong damn train! It will still get me to my stop, but I will get there later than the train that came 4min later. Grr!
 
We do our surgery drop-offs at 7:30 am, and procedures generally start around 9. Had a client call this morning at 8:50 asking if they could get squeezed into the schedule to have their 19 month old dog spayed today. I should at least be thankful they weren't a walk-in.

My rant today also involved work. It shouldn't since it was my day off. But...one of our receptionists had to leave early because of a family emergency. According to her when she told our PM she had to leave, first thing out of his mouth was "Well I have to leave at 5 to go to Orlando..." (he and his fiance are driving down there for her birthday). Seriously, your employee is telling you that a family member could be dying and that is what you say?? And then instead of letting her leave immediately and handling things himself, he has her call me to ask me to come in for a few hours (this was at 4:15, we close at 7). Of course I say yes because that's who I am. I was so pissed about it though. All the time he tells us not to expect to be able to leave right when our shift ends, that we may have to stay to help out, or we get called in early because he doesn't schedule things appropriately, and then he does something like this. Like he couldn't stay for 2 extra hours and still be able to drive to Orlando tonight.

But, everyone else was already pissed at him for terrible scheduling today so we all bitched about it for a while and felt a little better.

The response was a firm "lol nope!" so I don't know any further details about exactly who it was, but chances are they're not up to date as far as their exam goes, and I'm sure it's safe to say the dog probably ate that morning and the night before, so even if we wanted to make ourselves miserable to bend over backwards for an inconsiderate client, we wouldn't have been able to safely do it anyway. People. Sheesh.

Crazy is in the air this week. Last night, we had a walk in emergency visit for a dog with....chin acne. That had been there for 3 weeks. But suddenly became an emergency worthy of our emergency fee. And one of our clients today is someone a few people recognized from the news because he's awaiting trial on a felony that was a big story in the area. And he said he wanted to leave the country with the dog (who was having surgery, btw) next week. Like, uh, are you fleeing the jurisdiction or something?

Damn, that is ice cold. What a jerk. A bad manager can really screw things up, but at least you guys are bonding a little over the venting. Silver lining, maybe?

People are insane. Like, would you expect to be able to schedule a non-emergency same day surgery for yourself? No? Then why do you expect to be able to do it for your pet? And then they don't listen to instructions either and get pissy when they have to reschedule because they show up late or feed their pet right before it's supposed to go under anesthesia.

Luckily we haven't had too many crazies like that though 😱

Haha yeah, that is the silver lining. It just feels like the atmosphere between him and the rest of the team is getting worse and worse. One of our doctors legitimately hates him and the other is getting there. Our shift lead can't stand him. I know he's not intentionally being a jerk, he'susually a nice guy, but he doesn't think before he speaks/acts and he really doesn't know how to be a practice manager...and apparently he's more selfish than i thought. I think they were insane to hire someone who had zero experience in the field at all. He's managed a restaurant. Not the same thing as a veterinary hospital. I'm still baffled that he got the job to start and manage a new hospital. Meanwhile he walks around totally oblivious, rarely takes responsibility for his screw ups, and acts like he's everyone's buddy.
 
We lost a dog at the clinic today, after being there all day for a blood test. She was completely normal all day, ate that morning, was in our treatment area being watched as we drew blood for a low-dose-dex test and once we finished getting our last sample, we moved her back to the kennel area to make room for another animal coming in. About 30 minutes later a kennel tech came up and said she wasn't moving. We did CPR for 25 minutes trying everything and still don't know what happened. Ugh its hard loosing them for an unknown reason and explaining to the owner, hey I know your dog was just here for a blood draw and she somehow died?? Not looking forward to having that conversation on my own soon. I went home and hugged my babies a little tighter than usual.
