RANT HERE thread

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Can't believe this is a rant... But I've been offered 3 associate veterinary positions in 3 different states. My dream job is in Minnesota and the SO is all but refusing to go. I've dreamed of working in a clinic like this for years and I've been set on working at this place since June. So I'm going to have to either give up my dream job for my relationship or my relationship for my dream job.

To say I'm in turmoil would be an understatement.

If your SO refuses to go, could you maybe do long distance? If it's meant to be, it's meant to be... But you can't turn down your dream job! You'll never forgive yourself if you end up hating your other job if you don't take it!

Yeah, long distance is not an option.

Assuming your SO knew you were applying to the position in MN, I'd say it's a bit late for them to be protesting about it now. Plus MN is awesome and you should definitely come here.

The question you have to ask yourself is: is your dream job really a dream if it means breaking up with him?

Also, I think everyone really needs to remember that first jobs rarely last more than 3 years. Even when people love them at first.

Yeah dude, what you think is a dream job can easily end up being a ****ing nightmare. Been there done that.

Thank god for my supportive SO who stood by me, held my hand and told me "if you come home one more time hysterically in tears, I am going to put in a resignation for you. I will support you during your unemployment even if it takes 6 months to find a job." I can count multiple people I know who have very similar stories. I probably would have driven off a cliff had I severed a relationship for this ****ty job that I thought was beyond dreamy right out of school.

Day 5 of migraine. I can no longer imagine a life without a migraine. Need to go back to sleep.

Busted my toe open after a funeral. Every step hurts. Have work in 3 in a half hours. Yay.

That sucks, I'm sorry. I did 4 weeks of externship at this clinic and I've become close friends with one of the associates. I hope it doesn't turn into a nightmare as I feel I have a pretty good handle on what this clinic disappear

I don't want to have the SO resent me by making him go to Minnesota, but my entire being feels like it NEEDS to go to Minnesota. He doesn't understand that and keeps trying to convince me that I will be happier in Atlanta. Ugh. I have to make a huge, life changing decision and I just want to crawl in a hole and disappear

Ugh! I cracked my iPhone on a two foot drop off my nightstand. This is the second time this has happened to me in having the phone 4 months. time first time I was cutting myself with it, so I paid the 120$ to get it fixed, but I REALLY don't want to shell out the money again. This time the crack isn't like a glass shards crack, but it takes up the entire phone so it's hard to read things towards the top. I swear this is just the iPhone 6 that is doing this, I've had all the generations of iPhones over like 6 years or so and this is the first time this has happened to me.

What does he have against Minnesota? Does he have a really good job he doesn't want to leave or does he just like warm weather (Atlanta)?

Job market there for him isn't that great, he's up for a big job in Atlanta, far away from his family, and the cold (he despises the snow) are the main reasons.

Last semester I tripped and fell with my 6+ in my hand and it shattered. There are like chunks missing. It didn't even fall that far!! It's definitely something to do with this generation. I have never cracked phones before and my parents think I'm just being irresponsible. No, this phone just needs to come with a fragile warning 😡

I dropped my 5s 2 feet and it shattered like the day after I got it.

I use a lifeproof case now.

Yeah exactly. My parents bought me this phone for my birthday this year, and I think they are going to KILL me that it happened again (they're visiting tomorrow). It doesn't matter that I pay for the repair myself, they still are going to say I'm not being careful enough.

Anyone have any case suggestions? I just ordered a new one that had good ratings and was only 11$... but I'm willing to spend more if it really works. The 50$ ones just seem ridiculous.

I think the iPhone just isn't for me... Lol. I had a windows phone for a bit and I really liked it. I'm not sure what possessed me to change back.

Yeah lifeproof can run pretty high, and I know Otter Boxes can be an aesthetic no for some, but honestly any case that has the soft, rubber part to absorb the shock and a harder outside protects it okay, at least in my experience.

Because windows phones are extremely unlikeable? And not very practical? If you're gonna go from iphone, at least get an android phone. I'm honestly surprised windows phones still exist.

The lifeproof case *is* expensive....but it's waterproof and shockproof. And so even when I drop my phone, it's fine. When the case gets damaged they have a lifetime warranty (and I don't get new phones that often). It has definitely paid for itself in terms of if I didn't have it, I would have at least had a screen replacement by now.

The Trident case worked great for my with my Galaxy S3. Literally dropped it from 3+ feet screen side down on the concrete with no issues. I didn't even have the most durable case.

Right now, I just have one of the supposedly stronger Speck cases on my S5.

I SWEAR by my lifeproof. They're expensive, but it's totally worth the investment. Also, if anything ever happens to your case, they'll replace it for free. Some of the best customer service I've ever worked with!

I don't have a particularly hardy case (not otterbox or the like) but a good quality one and drop phones a few feet every once in a while but have yet to crack one.

I think I owe it to my glass screen protector, honestly. It will crack before the screen will.

So I would recommend trying them out! 🙂

the 5s I dropped? had a screen protector. It was nice in that the shards didn't go everywhere. Still shattered. Just easier to clean up

I've still been contemplating one of these. My currently normal screen protector is pretty scuffed so I could use a new one.

My dad uses an Otterbox for his IPhone. The phone fell out of his motorcycle suit on the highway going 80. Dad was able to go back and get the phone. Only thing damaged was the case.

@hazelmoo what life proof version do you have? I see one on Amazon called waterproof lifeproof case for like 50$. Is that the one? Cracks are my biggest concern, so what do you think?

the nud or something? husband has that one and he's dropped it a few times with no issues.

A glass one?
It was one of the film ones.

I have the FRE. I like it because it's nice and thin. I have dropped my phone down an entire flight of stairs and it bounced all the way down. It was fine!

"Lifeproof FRE SERIES iPhone 6s Waterproof Case"

This sound right??

Currently at the Apple Store. I told the guy about how this has happened so many times with this phone model and this case and he's like "with all due respect, I have the same phone and case and that's never happened" he also told me that the 6s supposedly has stronger glass, but I think that sounds like BS to me.

But now I just feel more embarrassed and stupid, and I'm about to waste my money. Ugh.

That is some damn fine science of him...lol

Really? That is terrible customer service.

That right there would be enough for me to not give that store my business. Then again, I'm not a fan of Apple at all so they wouldn't have gotten it to start with, but shame on them.

I'm with Caia. I swear by my Zagg tempered glass screen protector. I've shattered it three times and my screen has been 100% perfect every time. And they have a lifetime warranty. Once you buy one screen protector, they will give you a new one for free, you just pay like $3 for shipping. Plus, they don't get the bubbles under them like the film ones do.

I had zagg but it wasn't the piece of glass/plastic over it.

so the nice thing about apple is that they usually ask you to review their service. I would be very honest about it.

Agreed. That was a horrible way to respond to a customer. The only Apple product I have is my Macbook which I love. Otherwise I love the Galaxy series. Hoping to get the S7 sometime soon. It looked beautiful in the store and I love that they brought back the ability to add microSD cards. When they took that away for the S6, I got really mad and decided I was going to run my S5 to the ground.

I think it was his way of saying "no, the phone model is not defective, that's what happens when you drop it"... but he worded it in a way that I found offensive.

Either way it seems offensive. The correct response would be "I'm sorry this phone model is causing you so much trouble! Do you want to try a different model or stick with the same one and maybe try a different case for it?"

That sucks. I would guess it comes with the territory of having a much larger screen surface area than the previous generations! (and isn't it thinner as well, or around the same?) I'm sure that plays a factor in making it a more vulnerable model.

The only smartphones I've had so far were a 4S and now a 5S and luckily I've never cracked any...I've only "dropped" phones a few times (like sliding out from the car or being knocked down while still hanging on charging cord) and all were short enough falls to be absorbed by very basic thin plastic, silicone, or rubber cases. I absolutely HATE chunky/otterboxy cases (and the lifeproof types are just overkill for me personally, since I rarely drop or am in situations where it could get wet), so I get cases for looks that would provide a minimum standard of surface protection/slight shock absorption while still being pretty thin. Call me crazy, but I bought this 5S after Christmas and it was completely naked until just a couple weeks ago (because it took that long for the "temporary" thin case I ordered to get here...) and were it not for scuffing/the possibility of drops I wish I could keep phones naked all the time. But I'm really careful with my electronics and keep a death grip on them while using (seriously no one/nothing is gonna get me to drop this from my hands 😛) or in a pocket/purse/wallet-with-phone-pocket when I'm walking around.

So I guess my only rant here is "why do we still have to worry about the fragility of device screens in 2016 and stronger/'shatterproof' screens are still a relatively new/niche thing" 😛

I dropped my S5, which I had only had for like 4 months, the very same day that I was thinking that I needed to get a case for it. There were no visible signs of damage, but the screen went completely black forever. So now I'm stuck with my old S3 Mini until next year. Bleh.

Last year I dropped my droid maxx from a height of 10 inches and destroyed the screen. I probably still had almost a year until is eligible to upgrade. Took my old Nexus phone and reactivated it on my account and the next day traded that old phone in for a band new one.
I did this on Verizon and was still on the 2 year contract program at the time. It might not work if anyone's on the newer monthly phone payment deal.

I mean, it could totally be honkey dorey and all... But I was very content with my job for the first 3 months, then it went to bad to ****ty to bat**** crazy. I loved all the other associates to pieces. They weren't the problem at all.

Just giving you that warning, because there is a high probability you won't be staying at your first job for a long time. Just like there's a high probability that long distance won't work out (esp without end in sight). Works out fine for many people, but odds are kind of stacked against you IMO.

And dragging SO out to somewhere he doesn't want to be for your job is kind of ****ty of you unless it was literally a once in a lifetime type of situation. You don't need to justify it to me or anyone else because in the end it only affects you. I don't care in all honesty if your relationship fails or if your job ends up craptastic. But what you perceive as a dream job right out of school in a clinic you like, is highly unlikely that once in a lifetime type of situation. I can almost assure you, it probably isn't as magical as you perceive it to be, and there are many more opportunities out there that are as good or better if you allow yourself to look around.

This is kind of like the warning I give to prevets who chase their "dream school" by sacrificing something else big in their lives. I know it's hard to wrap your head around, but THAT school isn't the only one that will make you happy. It's easy to be blinded in that need to "get in" or "get a job" phase.

I don't think it's a good idea unless you're okay with saying, "well relationship wasn't meant to work out if we can't survive this..." And shrugging it off. My personal belief is that that line of thinking is bull**** regardless of how many times I hear it. You make decisions in your relationships, and those decisions will affect the outcome of your relationships. You can't unilaterally make decisions and expect a healthy relationship to work out. I don't believe in fate, so maybe that's the difference.

I dunno, maybe he's being stubborn too and your relationship just isn't worth it. Who knows. But it sounds like there could be so much more compromises that could be made in either direction, even if it ends up with both of you going back to the drawing board that involve neither Atlanta not Minnesota.

Just my 2cents, and it probably isn't worth that much.

Am I the only one who thinks that if he is absolutely not open to making life changes with his partner, he's not worth having around? Idk, maybe I'm being insensitive and am totally wrong, but if my SO said "I am absolutely not discussing this, I'm not moving with you and if you move we are breaking up" I would tell him see ya later. I'm sure there's more to the story, but still.

There's a high probability my SO and I are going to be long distance for the next 4 years since he is going to a different medical school than I am vet school, but we are going to try and make it work since we have been together for 5 years and think it's worth it. I would never ask him to not go to his dream school or not take his dream job because of me. Am I naive and unexperienced for thinking that asking that of him would be wrong? Just like what jam's SO said?
