RANT HERE thread

@Elkhart it can take much much longer than two years to heal from heartbreak (or big traumatic life events). It sucks, and there are other lasting impacts as you mentioned. But it does get better eventually. Just have to keep on keeping on as others have mentioned, and use every weapon in your arsenal to combat depression, like therapy and medication.

Sent from my phone using the mobile app because I bought it and I'm stubborn

@Elkhart
I've been thinking about you a lot since you posted today. I've never been through what you're going through, but I've failed at law school and grad school, and been fired from a job I thought I would have for life, so I understand what it feels like to lose a dream, to lose a vision of your own future. It took me a lot longer than 2 years to get over those things. I struggle with depression; it sucks. I'm happy you're here today, and I hope you keep fighting. My inbox is always open if you want to talk.

@Elkhart I want you to know that we care about you and we want you to succeed in whatever ventures you undertake.

Like @SkiOtter said- what about your therapist? It isn’t fair to yourself to not go to see them and adjust meds that have been helpful to you in the past. Not to say therapy is the only solution but it IS valuable and you are absolutely worth it. You’re right that you can’t simply go on in the same way you are now and find satisfaction but it’s tough to take the leap with the fear of failure holding you back.

I have a more light-hearted rant to share.... does anyone else’s cat decide that the best time to sit on you is when you’re trying to study, do homework, or virtually anything productive? My cat sure does!

Sometimes my dog (forcefully!!) shuts my laptop with his paw. Usually that's how I know it's time for me to take a study break. 🙄

I have a somewhat similar situation! She’ll lay across my arms sometimes. In the photo if you look closely, the blue thing she’s laying on is my mouse! Good thing I have a trackpad too!

I believe that is part of the definition of cat: small furry being that will decide to attack without warning, may also immobilize productive people using the "squash and purr" technique.

First day of classes today...

Our first class went over the syllabus briefly, and the professor mentioned that the exam window time listed on the syllabus was incorrect. Our exams are online during a four hour window. You can start anytime, and then you have 2 hours or until the close of the exam window to take your exam. On the syllabus it was listed as 9am - 1pm, so I thought maybe he meant to put 8am - 12pm, as it normally is.

NOPE.

We found out in our first class today that the exam window is changing to 9am - 11:30am.

Okay, maybe just the one class. NOPE.

In our second class they confirmed the new exam window. The profs saw our confused looks and asked if we had gotten an email about it. The answer was a strong, resounding NO. So we had an unplanned Q&A about the new exam policy for a bit. One of my classmates brought up that there was an email sent last semester that they were thinking of trying out external cameras for exams, but then we never heard anything else about it.

One professor turned to the other and, I shirt you not, his exact words were, "They really don't know anything, do they?"

So after syllabus time the professor who wasn't lecturing went and yelled at administration and we got the new exam policy emailed during class. Y'all, it is sooooo stupid. We're now required to use gooseneck cameras; unclear if this is instead of or in addition to the normal camera we were already required to use. We're no longer allowed to have external calculators, which means I can't use the calculator I bought specifically for school because the one I already had was not allowed. At this point we might as well just switch to in-person exams. ETA: OH I FORGOT we also have to log in to the exam within the first 30 minutes, but it's unclear if the penalty is being locked out of the exam or if you just won't have the full time to take the exam.

But also, just the hypocrisy from my school. They're really big on preaching professionalism, and yet the fact that they didn't notify us of the new exam policy and we were just blindsided by it on the first day of class is not surprising in the least. In the past they also have given short notice of deadlines and mandatory events. It was definitely worse first year, but maybe we've just gotten used to it now.

Wait so you don’t have to actually take your exams in class? And you get a window in which to take them?

Weirdddd.

Yeah, and it is nice to be able to take exams from home because I live 45 minutes from campus (if I drive, or double if I take public transit*).

But these changes are due to "ethical concerns," so screw whoever ruined it for the rest of us 😡

* And speaking of public transit, it's a double rant kind of day. For various dumb reasons, multiple trains per day have to be cancelled due to operator shortage. I got to the station to go home this afternoon and the next two trains were cancelled, meaning a 45 minute wait. Some friends and I shared an Uber to our transfer stop.

Some of you already know this but I got hit by a car while riding my bike to my first class since break 🙁 Ive been recovering from an injured knee from a soccer game and was just starting to feel a little better
I was biking down a long hill that leads to campus. The perpendicular streets all have stop signs but the street I was on doesnt have any. So I am biking down and a guy basically just rolls through a stop sign. I try braking, but it's raining and I dont have nearly enough room so I basically T-boned his car with my bike and then got thrown off onto my side. He stopped and everything to see if I am ok of course. My bike is a little messed up (should be fixable), I'm a bit sore and had to show up to class with wet jeans but besides that I am physically ok.
Last time I was in a bike accident, I wound up in the ER and had some bad injuries. I had to get my face glued back together (only a minor scar on my chin now), they took X-rays but didnt properly diagnose my broken scaphoid, and had oral trauma (that also wasn't addressed and later had to get a root canal but was lucky I didnt lose any teeth). Needless to say, the situation had me frazzled and I was trying to keep it together and not cry in class. I've had better days for sure 🙁

Holy cow! I’m glad you’re doing ok. Trauma is very scary and it can be so hard to get back to life as usual following. You can always message me!

Pleural effusion is back in full force :hardy: even after kind of resolving for a bit. I’m getting punted back to the specialist who I just found out today is seeing me over a month from now. I feel like an ER trip to get this drained is in the near future. Sigh

On mobile and not a high level donor rant:

Anyone else feel like the button to go back to the pre-vet forum under the ad on the bottom side of the page is invisibily covered by the ad? Like I can never navigate back to the main pre-vet forum without opening a new browser page of whatever advertisment it is. I know my thumbs aren't that fat and that my fine motor skills are still functional.

SDN is just trying to boost ad revenue I'm guessing.

Post on the bug thread?

I don’t have that issue but I have a phone that’s on the larger side. May just be a screen size issue with the website getting squished, but you can post on the issues thread and they might have a better answer

So my dog has a UTI and I really do feel bad for her which is why I’m trying really hard not to be too mad at her right now when she JUST PEED IN MY BED

Although I 100% recommend whatever brand mattress saver we have because our new mattress we haven’t even had for 2 weeks is totally dry even though the sheets were soaked
Quoting a Lounge post...dunno if it'll show in Pre-Vet so I'll just make it an Indent:

Regardless of whatever bed you get, one of the best purchase decisions I ever made was to get a mattress protector. Many of them from big box stores are too noisy or plastic-y and ruin the feel of the bed, but the SafeRest from Amazon has been going strong for me ever since!
Amazon product ASIN B003PWNH4Q
It legitimately feels like just another fitted sheet but has some extra water resistance.

7 years later, the actual mattress still looks brand new, since not a single drop of sweat or anything has gotten to it:

Edit: Do I sound like a shill? Promise I'm not lol.

Anyways, I swear by those mattress protectors off Amazon. I can't even tell they're water resistant (no plastic-y noise) and judging from the appearance of the mattress looking brand new, it's some of the best advice I've ever taken, and any new bed in the future will be protected from Day 0, no exceptions.

Might help to see a screenshot for things like this.

Twitter "Bootstrap" has become a widely adopted framework for tons of websites that allows one website to dynamically scale based on the screen size/window size, so the same SDN page applies to both mobile and desktop views instead of a separate "mobile" SDN page.

Point being: I'm not on mobile right now but I can simulate being on mobile just by making my browser window squished like a cell phone, but the link at the bottom isn't occluded for me, so a screenshot would be almost mandatory if you want anyone to see what you're seeing. 🙂

But I commiserate, since I accidentally click on ads (like on YouTube) all. the. time. Especially if you click, then the page twitches then shifts, then an ad appears right where you clicked 2 seconds ago.

Mini-rant: house cleaners left the front door propped open with the vacuum. Not only is it 30° outside (so like, thank you for jacking up our heating bill), it sent me on a panicked hunt for both of my cats to make sure they were still in the house.

Thankfully they did not run out the door to freedom. Found one shut in a room (fine, he is a total pain while people are trying to do things so I support that choice) and the other one squashed like an angry furry pancake in the ceiling in the basement over the water heater.

When I tried to ask the house cleaners to please remember to keep the door shut because of the cats' safety, they tried to deny it was open to begin with. Like yeah, peeps -- it's closed now because I just closed it. 🙄

Mattress covers are evil and literally all of them feel like plastic, even the ones that supposedly don't. My family has always rented out our vacation houses and so the mattresses get covered because people are gross...but I have been known to wake up in the middle of the night and rip the whole damn thing off the bed because it's like sleeping on a giant stretched out diaper.

They also ruin the function of memory foam mattresses because they aren't flexible.

...I realize I sound like a spoiled brat from this post and promise I'm really not a priss about most things but I legit cannot stand them lol.

I have one on the tempurpedic and it feels like fabric. Absolutely no diaper feeling at all.

I've never had a problem with mattress covers.

Don't hate me for my freaky memory, but I think you ordered the one I did after I poasted years ago lol. And yes, no diaper feel at all.

You are a bit of an oddball remembering that. But, I did, and that one was good. I have one now that’s even better that came from the furniture place when I bought the mattress. The other one is still on the guest bed.

Petty rant incoming:

My kid's first birthday is on Saturday (what, how?!) and since we live ~6-7 hours drive away from family we set up the birthday party in a town about halfway between to make it easier for them to come. Booked hotel, boarding the dogs, bought specialty cupcakes for everyone, reserved a restaurant, the whole shebang. Now, thanks to a potential winter storm, already the grandparents on my husbands side have backed out.

I get it, winter weather is bad news bears and it sucks to drive in (and they are coming from even further away than the rest of the clan). But it hasn't even started yet. At least give it a chance to get bad and then back out?

Also lowkey judging because they've lived in northern states their entire lives and know how to drive in snow.

Again, I know this is all stupid and petty and the baby won't remember any of it but it's so hard to put all this effort into something and have people back out last minute.

I would literally lose my **** at them. not cool

one of my greatest fears is losing my cats... and I swear I still have trauma from when ziggy went missing for 24 hours and caused me to miss my own grad party

Was able to get in for a chest tap this week. Pulled off half a liter of serum looking stuff. Ouch. Now dealing with raging pleurisy. Also ouch. Had a repeat x Ray today and surprise! The euffsion has reappeared. I can except another tap this week and subsequent ones until this stops. I’m really developing a phobia of needles.

Update: husband's brothers both backed out as well, though one eventually changed their mind and is coming. My whole family made it though so I'm in a much better mood.

We just finished having a blast at the water park and now my husband and baby are napping together and snoring in harmony. It's adorable.

I’ve used Lyft twice. Never again. I’m livid.

I requested a Lyft back from a restaurant and it was $11. I clicked select Lyft and waited two minutes while saying goodbye and getting ready to head out. I then clicked confirm and my ride was on his way. Mind you, the price disappears after you click select Lyft. I get dropped off and it says I paid $24 after discount. I contacted Lyft support immediately.

The first person was patronizing and that I could be assured I was not overcharged. I confirmed my ride for $24 and so I had to pay it. Except I didn’t. Nothing ever said $24. When I said I was upset she abruptly ended the chat. The second person was nice but said it was out of her hands and she couldn’t help me. Great. I then realized the part about not being able to see the price before confirming and started a third chat. Exactly the same as the first one. The reasoning is that if you wait even 10 seconds, the fare could increase for various reasons.

EXCEPT, I checked multiple times what the fare would be when I got home and every time it was $7. The route never changed and neither did the time. So for reasons no one knows, the fare increased from $11 to $24 (but I never saw that because I physically couldn’t), then immediately down to $7. By their reasoning they can charge $100 and no one could complain because the fare is liable to increase in a matter of seconds. I’ve never had this problem with Uber. It’s not even the money I’m concerned about. $13 isn’t life crushing. It’s the shadiness and the concept that there is no accountability for this and no one at Lyft cares.

Thanks for sharing your experience. I've never used a ride sharing service, so this is valuable to me. A couple years ago I started seeing a bunch of cars with really distracting glowing purple things in their windshields, and I thought it was just a black cultural thing, since a ton of cars have purple, green, blue, etc. lights in random places in the vehicle here. Guess they're Lyft drivers.

**** what happened to you. That's complete bull****. Maybe consider leaving reviews on Yelp, Google, the app stores, and even consider doing a chargeback with your credit card company, and show the chat transcripts as proof that you tried to resolve it with the merchant first.

I've read some nasty shenanigans about Uber too (e.g. screwing their drivers over as well as stalking people via the app by tracking location even after your ride is over), so I don't know who else is left other than taxis.

I’ve heard good and bad things. I’ve also never heard of any of my friends having issues with Lyft. So this was unexpected. I’ve been fine with Uber, but I’ve heard Lyft often has lower fare so I wanted to give them a try.

I think I’ll end up doing a chargeback. I feel like I’m within my right to do that, and the company definitely won’t fight it. Again, I don’t even care that much about the amount of money. It’s the principle that they could increase the fare to literally anything and say it’s fine.

Once I had booked a lyft and the driver GOT to me but drove too far and so I walked out of the store I was in (later at night in the cold of December) walked about half a block at least, across and down a main street in Chicago, to his car. Once I got there I tried to get in and he was like “you’re going west and I don’t want to go west so I’m cancelling your ride” and straight up cancelled my ride with me standing there because he didn’t want to go 15 minutes that direction. :rage::rage::rage::yeahright::yeahright::yeahright:

I'm a noob but curious:

1. Doesn't the driver know exactly where you are? Like doesn't the app give them GPS coordinates or something to pretty much what you put as the pickup location? So if he went half a block or more out of the way, it seems like he was trying to be a douche and not an accident?

2. Doesn't he know your destination before agreeing to pick you up? In other words, he made you do all that and cancelled to your face as some power tripping douche move and not because the app didn't tell him where you wanted to go in advance?

3. Don't you get to review all drivers? He acted like a douche knowing full well it would negatively affect his reputation with Lyft?

Sorry, it's just beyond me. I spent New Year's Eve once in Chicago and it was packed and freaking frigid and windy and...violence and fights so it would suck ass if you had to walk that far only to get proverbially screwed by your driver! I was at Red Ivy in Wrigleyville for their like $85 all you can eat/drink thingy. I remember it was like 1 AM and we saw on TV that the city already had their first murder of the year and we were like "Welp. Chicago." and kept drinking.

Uber driver from SFO at one point asked me mid-way along the 101 if I had looked at his picture to confirm it was the same driver driving the car as the picture it showed in the app. I stammered something about the license plate, and he then asked, "but you didn't think to confirm who was actually driving your ride home? How do you know I am who I say I am?"

And then proceeded to tell me he had spent time in prison before coming to America.

Almost jumped out of the car on the highway, had 91- keyed in on my phone, and had him drop me off closer to the police station than my house. Super, super creepy.
