If I have to hear ONE MORE American going on about how happy they'll be to "economically crush & annex" my country... I know it isn't all (or even most) Americans, but Canadians will not forget the hostility from the U.S. for a long time 😡😡

How many Americans are you actually hearing this from? Most of the Trumpers I know have been suspiciously silent since ~3 days in.

Also please have pity on those of us that love Canada and especially those of us that can throw a paper airplane and have it land in Canada, lol.

It's unfortunately at least once a day, mostly online if you say you're Canadian anywhere right now, but I have a couple Americans in my family by marriage that are all too happy to constantly bring up how Canadians are weak & will soon be taken over once we're beat into submission.

Of course lol, I feel terrible for all of you normal Americans. Your government is being awful to you most of all, you deserve better.

We don't claim them lol

I feel like it has always been a prevalent stereotype among both political parties that Canadiens aren't as "tough", they easily surrender, they say sorry too much, they're softer than we are because we're boot strap mentality, etc. I'm sorry people are being THAT aggressive about it.

Any trump lover from the southern US especially needs to shut the **** up they’d get their asses whooped by a Canadian winter. They can’t even handle an inch of snow on a road but they’re gonna “invade and crush Canada”? They need to go back to sucking on their diabetic twisted tea sludge

A lot of the inflammatory interactions we see online these days are started by bots/AI. Not always, but a lot. Click on some profiles next time and see how many have weird profiles. Some random profile that's existed for two weeks with a bogus picture will post the most offensive comment and get people all riled up and start arguing in the comments, but the original poster never shows up again. On my local news, the same bogus profiles post the same offensive/trumpy stuff on every thing the news posts. Could absolutely be some bored person in a basement, but it's widespread enough that I think it's a bigger effort than just local media.

Also. Any American who truly thinks the US military (any branch) would actually invade Canada is an idiot and doesn't understand how politics actually work on a granular level.
This. Same goes for Greenland. To quote exactly what he said last night "One way or the other, we are going to get it". 1. That's literally declaration of war??? You're flat out saying on live television and being quoted that you will basically invade. It truly baffles me how anyone believes these people care about us??

ALSO-- Musk? Either Trump lied yesterday to Congress and the US when he said Elon was the head of DOGE, or The White House lied under oath that Elon is not the head of DOGE. I can't understand how anyone can defend this anymore.

I'm so pro-Canada that last week I almost dropped a couple hundred buckaroos on Canada's English language proficiency exam so I could apply for permanent resident status at a moment's notice...

'see! it's possible and you can make so much money being debt free at a young age!'
Late to the discussion, but just wanted to point out that I have pretty much resolved that “a debt-free life” is just. not possible. You’re always going to have to be paying off something. Obviously, we here all know good and well that student loan debt can be absolutely ridiculous. Maybe I am naive for thinking this way but, I have just kind of come to terms with the fact that if I get into vet school, I will be making those payments for a long ass time. I decided that if it means I have to live smaller, that’s fine but like I just think chasing after the debt free life as soon as humanly possible will just not work. I am more after a “debt-manageable life”. And sorry, but me getting an iced latte isn’t going to be the thing that stops me from paying it all off in 5 years or whatever.

Idk. Was anyone else raised with the good ol Dave Ramsey advice? Which is just: never get into any debt ever. Never take out loans, never use a credit card. It’s just not possible if you are doing it on your own/don’t come from money.

Agreed to a certain extent. Debt manageable life is probably the most realistic for most Americans. Even once the student loans are gone (whether paid off or forgiven at the end of the loan), there's still mortgages at the very least.

Our debts are our mortgage (295k, 20yr loan), the solar panels (75k, 20 year loan), and student loans (105k, standard 10 year unfortunately). Credit card debt is used for points for home improvement stores and paid off monthly. Big purchases (heat pump) made with savings and tax refunds. Goal is to not make major purchases without at least half saved, if not more

I was not, but my husband was. My dad was a finance guy, worked for the FDIC for his whole career and was good with money. Would pay in cash for big purchases when he could (which was often, because he was a boomer that paid $0.50 for his education with a huge return in his salary lol), but also always took advantage of good financing deals (such as no interest for x years). "Why give them all of your money now if it's free to keep it in your pocket longer?" To me that makes perfect sense, but he also wasn't making major purchases that he couldn't otherwise afford if there was no financing option.

My husband on the other hand was raised 'if you don't pay in full in cash at the time of purchase, (except a house), you don't get to have it.' But again, his parents are also boomers who raised 3 kids on a single average salary while also owning two homes, boats/toys, etc. This kind of lifestyle is no longer achievable for younger generations on a 'normal' person's salary. If you wanted a lake cottage, a boat, whatever....you're financing that these days.

I will say that I pay for things with credit cards exclusively, but I'm not in CC debt past the payment due date. I have that money to pay the bill for that item at the end of each month because I budget and don't overspend. If you aren't addicted to spending, there's no reason not to reap the multiple benefits a credit card can offer (points, cash back, miles, whatever). Currently my only debt is my car.

On the topic of credit cards, what is a good credit card for a young adult? I have had my Discover Student card since I started college. (It is not fully paid off but I make my payments every month so I haven't "missed a payment). My goal is to pay the $5,000 I owe by the time I move this fall and hopefully close the card and open a new one. My credit score is a 730. The points back on this card...suck lol. I was looking into a Chase Sapphire card but I'm not sure. Any suggestions?

I started with discover student. Then I got Chase Freedom Unlimited and a Chase Sapphire Preferred. The Sapphire Preferred has a slightly higher fee and the rewards are better on travel, but I use my Freedom Unlimited more for everyday purchases. They’re both fine though! I can probably scrounge up a referral code if you PM me and it’s not against SDN terms. My Sapphire Preferred limit is very high…which doesn’t really matter if you’re paying it off monthly but it does help your credit score to have a high limit/low utilization. I’m part of the ‘pay for everything with my credit card but pay it off in full monthly’ club. I actually pay it twice a month so I can keep a better eye on the budget.

I started with a local credit union credit card. No rewards, lower limit, but only 6% interest. It was a $500 limit when I was 18 and my dad was still on it and is now a $2500 limit with just me on it. I have another credit card but it's a store card and I HIGHLY recommend avoiding those unless you know that you will not impulsively spend. Mine gets me rewards at the store it's from and I get some travel benefits.

Otherwise, I agree that Chase is a good place to start. Spouse got that one a couple years ago and it has grown well and helps the credit.
hopefully close the card
Def agree with Battie, don't do that if you can avoid it. Make that the card you use at the gas station and pay it off immediately. Age of credit matters, and closing an account will ding your score.

For reference, when I bought my car, I had an 815. The salesperson called it "mom credit" 🤣 It's gone down since due to usage changes and the increase in debt, but I'm still in the 780s.

On an entirely different rant, screw vet professors who think public humiliation and embarrassment and passive aggressiveness are the way to interact with students. The college of public embarrassment graduates timid doctors lacking self confidence and I refuse to be part of that.

In regards to debt vs no debt…I was raised that debt should be avoided but is sometimes necessary. My parents were quite poor when I was a young child (like, don’t spend anything because there’s no money in the checking account poor) but they did very well over the years as I grew up so I’ve seen hard times and more prosperous times. They’re now able to buy cars with cash and avoid debt if they want, but it took them 35 years to get there.

I’m simultaneously pretty frugal in many aspects but I am also at a point in life where I can pretty comfortably afford most of my wants. Luckily I don’t want a lot! Granted, I 100% would not be in this situation as easily if my parents hadn’t helped pay a good portion of my vet school expenses (about half), but I’m also fortunate that I live in a very low cost of living area and make a very above average salary for the area because I am a specialist who can work remotely. My salary goes a LONG way out here. I paid off my student loans a couple years after residency, then bought a house (via a mortgage) for 137k, which would be unheard of in most areas of the country. I did buy a new vehicle in 2022 and took out a loan for it, but I was able to pay it off fully within a year by making aggressive payments. I kept saving and now my only debt is my mortgage on my house and the mortgage on the land I bought last year where I’m going to build a new house. I’m currently saving for the down payment to build said house, because they require at least 20% down but I’m trying for more to keep my mortgage payment where I want it. Once the house is built, I’m hoping to use profit from my current house to pay for a barn and a tractor and stuff so I can avoid more debt and life pretty much debt-free-besides-mortgage from there on out. So it’s doable to live with minimal debt, but I also realize I’m fortunate and reality would likely be quite different if I was living on “rural GP” wages out here instead of my specialist salary or if I hadn’t gotten the leg up from my parents.

I started with Capital One. There are definitely better options out there, but agreed, don't close it even if you don't use it. In the world of credit scores, closing cards and paying off debts is a bad thing, believe it or not. That's not to say you shouldn't pay things off, but don't be surprised if your credit score takes a hit when you get that 5k paid off. It's dumb.

I have a Deserve credit card because it is the only one I could get pretty much when I was 16 and I am pretty sure the company is nearly defunct. I tried activating my new card because my old one expired (definitely should just go with a new card altogether) and the website just doesn’t work? For a good while my app wasn’t working? 0/10 Do not recommend. I am trying to pay it off and then I will open a new one. I was pretty good about just using it for things I could afford regardless, like gas, groceries etc. But then I got hit with unexpected life stuff— dental issues and my insurance was maxxed out, car issues, you know how it goes. I am doing a lot of overtime so hopefully I can knock it out because I am definitely feeling the pain of the interest

Mine was built in the late 70s and looked it, and I have redone the floors, removed paneling and random decorative wall spindles, renovated two bathrooms, gotten all new appliances, and replaced the wooden privacy fence. Kitchen still needs an upgrade, but I’m not going to be the one to do it.

Did you DIY? I'm thinking that's what we're going to have to consider doing. Which could be fun because your dollar stretches farther, but I also have very minimal skills and my husband has none. My skills include helping my dad do various DIY things, but he drew the line at plumbing and electrical (for good reason, lol).

I'm expecting to die in this house because we have a phenomenal interest rate. So far, did most of the kitchen, the shower and tub upstairs, hot water heater, furnace, heat pump, and solar panels. Money in a CD for a deck this spring.

We had 2.99% in Florida (close on that house in late 2020). Still trying to come to terms with the fact that we may never see a rate that low again in our lifetime.

A mix! My dad is extremely handy. He and I painted and laid LVP floors before I moved in in 2021. I paid a local guy to retile the main bathroom and do the Sheetrock work relating to that plus the paneling and spindle removal so it would be done before I moved in. Paid a crew to do the fence last year…that was totally worth it because they had it done in two days and it would have taken us way longer to DIY. My dad renoed the half bath later on over about a week with my help. But I’ve spent maybe 15k total and think it looks significantly better.

And yeah, interest rate on this house is 2.875%. It’ll be hard to trade that in for 6-7% on a 400k+ new build. But alas, my heart wants a farm lol

That all looks amazing!!

We're at 1.99% and paid 405k. 20% down because my husband saved while I was in school and I used my sister's life insurance money. I hella cheated.

A lot of that looks amazing! When the time comes, we definitely don't want a cookie cutter house and are willing to fix some of it up.

Also, again, entirely different rant:

DOUBLE SCREW vet professors who think they're immune to consequences because they have some fancy title. If I politely and privately confront you about a situation where you personally attacked me and you go "yeah, I did, and?" I hope you fall of your high horse and hit a few things on the way down. You do not get to be disrespectful and double down on it. I don't care if you're a janitor or queen of the damn world.

Second this!

I started with a venture one card 10+ years ago and it not only has covered flights and such with its rewards, but it's been a great, respected card to "grow" with!!! I also have a chase card that I've had since college and is my longest standing credit, and it was a good option for me at the time with no credit.

Looks absolutely beautiful!!

My partner and I are getting our house ready for the market, and your updates look a lot like ours - though yours are definitely more extensive and impressive. The realtor that came to meet with us was pleasantly surprised when she stepped inside because she had only referenced the photos from our sale when we purchased in 2018. Got to have a proud moment!

When we moved in, we paid about $4k to update our small kitchen - hired a local professional to resurface the cabinets from oak to blue, replaced the laminate counter with granite, added a white subway tile backsplash, and updated the hardware on the cabinetry. It's amazing what relatively small changes can do to a space!

Our biggest contribution was putting in probably $25k worth of labor in the backyard - it had no landscaping, trees, etc and now has lively perennial gardens (including a monarch crossing with tons of established milkweed) and many trees that we planted as little wee sticks that are really starting to grow into beautiful young trees. We even have a ginkgo tree!!!!

I'll miss our garden the most, aside from our 2.45% mortgage rate.

My head is swimming when I see the current rates.

It's rough out here. I've been stalking the sale records of the houses I've really liked and a lot of them have been bought by trust funds. They don't need to worry about rates and can offer as much over asking as they want as a result. It's so disheartening.

Literally put an offer in on a house today, and the realtor told our guy that there were several all cash offers from private equity. Luckily, the seller wants the home to go to *people,* but there’s only so much we can do, people will ultimately choose what’s best for them, and unfortunately this is happening everywhere. 😭

My mom has a 2.7% in CA and paid $365k for her 4bedroom house with a pool. After her divorce, bank is trying to push her to refinance with a 7%. Her mortgage would go from $2100 to about $3500. Insane

I'm also going to be this person. Private equity buying all these properties is a major factor in the housing shortage. I'll be willing to take a cut for someone real to buy the house. Especially after all the upgrades I've done to it.

I got a call from a random number. They asked if I was willing to sell, to which I said no way due to the interest rate. They asked even for the right price; I said they can't beat my interest rate or my mountain of debt. The house is supposedly worth 450-460k in just appreciation; likely around 500-515k with the upgrades. I wouldnt take less than 600 because of how big of a monthly payment I'd end up having. I hope your mom stays strong!!

I think it depends on your area for sure. In my area, I really don't think companies are buying up homes in the way that everyone is believing they are. In my area in particular, not a single home of the 200+ I've stalked over the past year has sold to a corp. Not a single one. But, although I live in a major metro area, it's not a hot destination like Colorado, Texas, California, Florida, etc. have been recently. That could definitely be playing a role.

Just one person's experience: When we sold our FL house (2yr old house, super cute, private yard, absolute peak of the FL seller's market in the past few years) we had a about 15 offers within the first 24 hours. A large handful were cash offers from companies/corps but all of them were lowballs or asking price. Just because they are writing all cash offers doesn't mean they are competitive. A company doesn't want the house that bad, a person/family does. It's the individuals/families with access to $$$ that are winning the bidding wars against other people. Companies don't want to spend more than they have to and they will back out of a bidding war and won't win against someone with an escalation clause.

Also good luck with the offer! I hope you get it.

We are actually writing an offer on a house today (third house, first two we lost to people with trusts) so I feel for you.

We've also lost our first two offers, though the second one was definitely to another family so that's at least good, so I'm right there alongside you. This sucks.

Cheering you on!!! I hope you get it!!

In an insane turn of events, the couple that offered way over asking on the second home we offered on got cold feet and backed out. Offers higher than ours had moved on, and so we got a house for cheaper than we expected to. 🤯🤯🤯

That was a happy accident I don’t think I could replicate if I tried.

Sitting in urgent care for the third time this school year, sixth infection since 2023. This time it’s +/- a nasty staph infection. Sometimes being immunocompromised is a pain in my ass.
Haha, it's either staph or strep! Can now confirm that lidocaine or not, having something lanced HURTS (less than a joint tap, more than an injection). TMS is also not as bad as metro but way worse than doxy. I don't mind the learning what my patients go through thing, I think it helps us be more empathetic as doctors, but I'd love it if I could learn fewer things, please and thanks.

We ended up getting our offer accepted as well! The cost of the house still makes me want to throw up (435k...built for 211k in 2011 😒) and it's going to be a crappy commute for me, but this is probably going to be as good as it's going to get honestly. This same house would probably be 100-200k more if it was any closer to my job

Yeah, this house hunt hurt…….. seeing what the owners paid for the home 10 years ago is a special form of torture.

Ohio Senate Bill 1 is absolutely terrifying.

Not only does it “ban” DEI in all ways, shapes, and forms, but it also calls out the illegality of all attempts to function previous DEI offices under a different name.

****’s getting really scary out here. If anyone lives in Ohio or attends Ohio State, call your reps about this, protest, push back! A similar but less sweeping bill failed last Ohio congress, seems less likely to do so again.

Here’s a good breakdown of the bill and it’s far-reaching consequences, which also includes preventing faculty strikes:
Ugh, come on Ohio

Yeah, as someone who's planning on applying to internships and residencies in the next few years, this worries me. A lot of vet schools are in red states...

Civicus described Trump’s actions since taking office as an “unparalleled attack on the rule of law” not seen “since the days of McCarthyism in the twentieth century”, stating that these moves erode the checks and balances essential to democracy.

“Restrictive executive orders, unjustifiable institutional cutbacks, and intimidation tactics through threatening pronouncements by senior officials in the administration are creating an atmosphere to chill democratic dissent, a cherished American ideal,” Tiwana said.

US added to international watchlist for rapid decline in civic freedoms
