It is incredibly disheartening! It's difficult to be an empath and witness animal neglect/cruelty/etc, and I think a lot of vet people are empaths by nature.
it’s always been that if you file taxes jointly with a spouse, they’ve considered both incomes on several of the plans. You could get around it by filing separately…you lose some of the tax benefits of marriage by doing that I think, but the difference/improvement in payments often made up for the difference in tax status. But it will suck for many married couples if it automatically considers both incomes, regardless of filing status, especially if it’s a sudden change.

Why do they even want to have the repayment based on dual spousal income? As a clueless individual what is their angle on even changing this. I assume there will be lawsuits over this if it moves forward, because allowing married borrowers to file separately and therefore have income based repayment calculated only on their individual income is written into the law.
It may not even move forward because of that, sometimes this administration talks about doing things before talking to their lawyers. But it's definitely going to cause some anxiety in the meantime.

I agree with what WZ said, but I assume they’ll frame it as people with a high earning spouse need to “pay their fair share” and that they “can afford” more because of said higher earning spouse. And on the surface, that might even make a tiny bit of sense…if you make very little and your spouse makes millions, your family probably can pay more than someone else who isn’t in that situation, but that type of person probably isn’t even using an income based plan. For average everyday people, they’re on income based plans because that’s what they have to do to survive. They’re just trying to get borrowers to pay more however they can. If your spouse also has significant debt it could possibly reduce your own payments, since they determine the household income/debt then divide the amount due between spouses proportionately to what is owed, but if your spouse doesn’t owe much or anything, then your payments are going to increase if both incomes get counted.
What Jayna said. Basically because they are seeing this as you taking advantage of a payment plan/lower monthly payment when the 'household' makes enough money to repay the loans more aggressively.
This makes me think they are just closing a loophole then. Still sucky, but it's the IRS and the government - you can't have your cake and eat it too. You can't claim the tax benefits of marriage while also saying you aren't financially united (although obviously this is what most of us did/do).
Moreso meant they attempted to close a loophole before backing off.
Thank you for this! I totally agree with that and will look more into the Caribbean schools to figure out if I really would go there or not before deciding to apply. I did that this cycle with all the schools I applied to because you are lucky to get into even one! I think even if I hear from LIU later in the summer, I won't be able to accept because I live in Illinois and it's in New York so relocating out there in a short amount of time is not feasible for me. I will definitely see if I can find housing that has good lease-breaking terms!
Out of curiosity, if you get off the waitlist late in summer, would flying out with a few suitcases and posting up in an extended stay while you figure out housing be an option? Is it that moving on short notice would be a huge pain (and it would be, don't get me wrong) so you don't want to do it, or is there a reason why it is absolutely not an option for you? If there are unique personal circumstances, I get that, but otherwise if you only have 1 chance out of 12 schools, I personally wouldn't pass up that chance (which may never come around again).

Endocrinology is one of my big interests! A big thing is knowing “red flags” for each disorder such as which cause PU/PD and which do not (esp when trying to differentiate Cushings which does, and hypothyroidism which does not). Another one being Na:K ratio and lack of stress leukogram in a sick animal for Addisons. Knowing the reasons behind the biochemical changes on blood work also really helps me remember them. I have a really simplified diagnosis chart for hypothyroidism, hyperthyroidism, Cushings addisons if you’re interested 🙂

Hypo is Addison's because you need to add pred (and usually mineralocorticoids) to treat it. I could always make the hypo - low cortisol connection, but the Addison name never stuck until someone told me to add pred.

Is it just your shower? If it's your entire unit, seek out legal advice. I'm pretty sure 24 hours is the universal length of time that is 'acceptable' to be without basic utilities in a rental
Lack of hot water is not an emergency, but a sustained lack makes a unit uninhabitable. If they can't rent it out in with the problem, you can't live in it with the problem. Hot water is a basic amenity in the US. With it just being your shower though, idk how that would be interpreted but personally I would see what your options are at this point

I’m just struggling because we were already talking about moving anyway, I’m one week away from finals, and we spent the four hours after the maintenance debacle at the ER vet so I’ve just got like no fight left in me. I do not think we should be paying full rent for the month the water was out but I have no idea how to go about negotiating that, especially since they were “putting in an effort” to get it fixed.
Totally get it. Like the worst time to be dealing with this. if you want to see what your options are, look up a lawyer who deals with tenant rights (could even be a city/county thing?)
