It is incredibly disheartening! It's difficult to be an empath and witness animal neglect/cruelty/etc, and I think a lot of vet people are empaths by nature.Maybe it’s just a north Florida thing Never saw this level of indifference when I lived in south Florida. It’s really disheartening.

it’s always been that if you file taxes jointly with a spouse, they’ve considered both incomes on several of the plans. You could get around it by filing separately…you lose some of the tax benefits of marriage by doing that I think, but the difference/improvement in payments often made up for the difference in tax status. But it will suck for many married couples if it automatically considers both incomes, regardless of filing status, especially if it’s a sudden change.Anyone else see that they’re trying to get BOTH spouses incomes to count towards IBR repayment plans for married couples. What an absolute joke. My partners income doesn’t pay my goddamn student loans so why would it EVER matter. I’m so beyond fed up
Go to the cheapest school, y’all.
That’s what it seems like they are trying to do 🙁 I was planning to get married next year and now I think I might have a reaaalllyyyy long engagement instead lolit’s always been that if you file taxes jointly with a spouse, they’ve considered both incomes on several of the plans. This year, two of my uncles, my grandmother, and childhood dog passed away. My grandmother and uncle within days of each other.
Last year, I lost my dog and my aunt.
All of these losses, except my childhood dog, were extremely unexpected. I just want it to stop.

My landlord told me I’m probably going to have to move because he’s thinking of selling. Fingers crossed I can move into his rental across the street, because I don’t want to find a new apartment.

being on a waitlist for a school that doesnt provide numbers/quartiles/any placement info is killingggg me knowing they will start calling people tomorrow. I know that they say "Due to year-to-year variability in the total number of offers made, we are unable to predict if a high or low rank number will or will not result in an offer to the program" but I feel like there would be so much more peace of mind if they gave some indicator of our stance on the waitlist being completely blind is killingggg me.

Yes the current chatter is that they are going to consider both incomes even for people who filed separately. So you miss out on the joint filing benefits AND still have higher payments.it’s always been that if you file taxes jointly with a spouse, they’ve considered both incomes on several of the plans. I assume there will be lawsuits over this if it moves forward, because allowing married borrowers to file separately and therefore have income based repayment calculated only on their individual income is written into the law.
It may not even move forward because of that, sometimes this administration talks about doing things before talking to their lawyers. But it's definitely going to cause some anxiety in the meantime.
Married student-loan borrowers' monthly payments could surge next month under a new move by Trump's administration
The Trump administration said married couples filing separate tax returns would have their spousal incomes used for monthly student-loan payments.
Why do they even want to have the repayment based on dual spousal income? As a clueless individual what is their angle on even changing this. I feel like it creates a deterrent to getting married when this admin likes to frame itself as “Christian and supportive of traditional marriage bla bla” and it seems so needless you’d think they’d want to keep any benefit to getting married aroundYes the current chatter is that they are going to consider both incomes even for people who filed separately. Cruelty and chaos tbh. And monetary gain, I suppose. But as they say, the cruelty is the point. Why do they even want to have the repayment based on dual spousal income? I don't think there's any true logical goal here. They just like scaring and hurting people

I agree with what WZ said, but I assume they’ll frame it as people with a high earning spouse need to “pay their fair share” and that they “can afford” more because of said higher earning spouse. And on the surface, that might even make a tiny bit of sense…if you make very little and your spouse makes millions, your family probably can pay more than someone else who isn’t in that situation, but that type of person probably isn’t even using an income based plan. For average everyday people, they’re on income based plans because that’s what they have to do to survive. They’re just trying to get borrowers to pay more however they can. If your spouse also has significant debt it could possibly reduce your own payments, since they determine the household income/debt then divide the amount due between spouses proportionately to what is owed, but if your spouse doesn’t owe much or anything, then your payments are going to increase if both incomes get counted. Why do they even want to have the repayment based on dual spousal income?
But from what I was reading, it’s specifically in the law that IBR can be done married filing separately, so hopefully if there’s a lawsuit that gets upheld, at least for that one plan. It’s maybe more ambiguous on the other plans so who knows what’ll happen with those.

Update: I’m seeing news articles today that they have already walked it back and They’ve clarified the statement and as long as you still choose to file taxes separately you can still have payments based on only your income.

Money. Get these loans paid ASAP would be the generous interpretation because they probably want to get rid of these payment plans altogether.

What Jayna said. Basically because they are seeing this as you taking advantage of a payment plan/lower monthly payment when the 'household' makes enough money to repay the loans more aggressively.Money. Similar to how many students can have $0 to their name and no financial support for education, but because their parents make a certain amount, or have a certain amount in assets (and also claim the student as a dependent, which we all know is not always accurate), the students won't qualify for financial aid beyond loans. It's assumed that your family will financially support you if the government decides they have the means to do it. It's assumed your spouse will help you financially, even if they aren't.
Also ETA:
This makes me think they are just closing a loophole then. Still sucky, but it's the IRS and the government - you can't have your cake and eat it too. You can't claim the tax benefits of marriage while also saying you aren't financially united (although obviously this is what most of us did/do).Update: I’m seeing news articles today that they have already walked it back and They’ve clarified the statement and as long as you still choose to file taxes separately you can still have payments based on only your income.
Tax loopholes only work for those who are already disgustingly wealthy.

Since my husband is a stay at home dad, it may even benefit me personally to file jointly and have my loans be based on both. Since we're a single income household, I'm hoping to get some sort of break here. Although anything will be better than the 10-year plan I was on to begin with

I think it's more likely someone just informed them that it is actually illegal at this point to do what they were trying to do. But we'll see. Sucks just existing in this state of not knowing how this is all going to shake out.
I don’t think they’re closing a loophole, isn’t it the opposite? They’re keeping the loophole open, it seems like. Closing the tax/loan/income loophole to me would have meant making spouse income count no matter how you file taxes.
But I do think they’ll probably find some other way to keep changing things and making it worse. Those small changes will never end. I’m so glad my loans got paid off during the initial COVID freeze.

We have to say goodbye to the doggie love of my life this afternoon. She has multiple GI ulcers and cannot go back on her arthritis meds. She's carprofen dependent at this time and cannot walk without it. So rather than have her go through hospitalization and nursing care with the GI stuff, and then taking the risk with Librela (for her specifically), we're saying goodbye.
I got her after my estranged aunt died in 2020. She had significant ortho issues and was obese. Got her to lose 20 pounds and maintain for a long time.
If I never had married my husband and had Baby Bats, i would have only had this beautiful Golden Retriever as my soulmate. Two single ladies living our best lives, potentially in residency right now. Instead, she has been my oldest and first big girl dog by accident tolerating a baby learning how to be kind to grumpy dogs.

I have hip dysplasia. (My terrible joke is that I liked labs so much I became one.) I have a labral tear in my bad hip and need surgery. Ortho thought part of why my symptoms have been so bad the past year is the tear, but it's not like it's 100% of my problems. I am just so afraid to go through all that and have all of the lost time and money to end up regretting it. At the same time, I feel like I need to do something about the situation because I am in a lot of pain a lot of the time and it's so hard.

Hi! I could use some advice. I am currently waitlisted at LIU (bottom-half) and trying to decide whether I continue to wait and hopefully hear from them, or move forward with a gap year. This is my first application cycle and I was really hoping to attend this fall. I have talked to lots of students who have taken gap years and speak very highly of them and recommend them so I'm starting to get torn. I have a job lined up for the summer working as a veterinary assistant at a surgery clinic and also shadowing at an avian and exotic clinic. I don't have an exotic/wildlife experience so that'll be helpful in diversifying my application and the surgery experience. I applied to 12 schools this cycle and was rejected to 11 of those. I'm nervous to take the gamble in reapplying with the risk of not getting in anywhere again. I am willing to apply to island schools and will be doing so but am not excited about attending those for various reasons. I am also worried about the cost with attending LIU and cost of living over there. I have become more interested in the school and could see myself there but would also love to go somewhere a little cheaper and somewhere with a teaching hospital. Please let me know your thoughts. I am not giving up on LIU yet but will want to move forward with gap year plans soon so I can find housing and start working on my VMCAS again.
I’d recommend you begin moving forward, but try to find housing that has the best lease-breaking terms you can find, just in case you do get called off the LIU list at the last minute. But you can’t just wait indefinitely for a call that may or may not come.
One other thing that came to mind when reading your post…you say you don’t really want to go Caribbean but you’re planning to apply. I would strongly recommend you only apply if you’re sure you would go. At least once a year, we see people here on SDN lamenting whether they should reapply again because their only acceptance is an island school and they don’t want to go there…they only applied there as a last resort “safety school” and didn’t expect they’d be stuck with that as their only acceptance. And that goes for stateside schools too, only apply somewhere you would truly go if accepted. Otherwise you’re wasting money on app fees.

Thank you for this! I totally agree with that and will look more into the Caribbean schools to figure out if I really would go there or not before deciding to apply. I did that this cycle with all the schools I applied to because you are lucky to get into even one! I think even if I hear from LIU later in the summer, I won't be able to accept because I live in Illinois and it's in New York so relocating out there in a short amount of time is not feasible for me. Out of curiosity, if you get off the waitlist late in summer, would flying out with a few suitcases and posting up in an extended stay while you figure out housing be an option? Is it that moving on short notice would be a huge pain (and it would be, don't get me wrong) so you don't want to do it, or is there a reason why it is absolutely not an option for you? If there are unique personal circumstances, I get that, but otherwise if you only have 1 chance out of 12 schools, I personally wouldn't pass up that chance (which may never come around again).Thank you for this! Also for the lease breaking, consider utilizing month to month leasing if you can find it. Month to month seems to be much more common lately. It's usually a bit more expensive, but is worth it in the right circumstances.

When I was switching from an in-lab job to working remotely and planning to move once I’d gone remote, my job wasn’t giving me a set date to switch. My lease was ending and I needed to renew or switch to month to month. The month to month rent was so much higher than the regular 12-month lease, it made more sense to just sign for an year and then pay the penalty for breaking the lease (like 2 months regular rent) in my specific situation. But being month to month for a couple months then converting to a regular longer lease may make sense in other situations. In the end, it all worked out and my job let me switch sooner than I thought and I didn’t need to resign. I just remember a SDNer from years ago who signed a lease way early and then their life situations changed, and they were stuck paying two leases in two cities because their lease in the college town was very stringent and they couldn’t get out of it when they moved back home. I wouldn’t want that to happen to someone, which is what I mean by finding a place with as favorable of terms as you can.

Please send all the good vibes. I have an endocrine final this week and I need to pass it to continue on in school. Normally it wouldn’t be a big deal if I failed because I could remediate over the summer, but this class doesn’t usually offer that.
Also if anyone has any tricks for keeping all the small animal endocrine diseases straight please help a girl out!

1. First and foremost, you aren't alone. I needed to repeat my first year. If you need someone who understands that perspective, please don't hesitate to reach out.
2. Tips!
- Hypoadrenocorticism is Addison's because they HypO and Addison's are both vowels. Addison's is bad (AB in the alphabet) and needs life long treatment. Potassium tries to kill them. Give all the fluids. Test cortisol. Start steroids. Super rewarding! 95% adrenal problem, 5% brain problem. ACTH stim cause you're seeing if they can make cortisol. Standard poodles, but everyone is fair game technically.
- Hyperadrenocortocism is Cushing's because Cushing's and Cortisol are both Cs. Cushing's is meh; ideally treated, but won't necessarily kill the dog that day (or even soon). The 5 Ps: panting, polyphagic, polydipsic, polyuric, and pot bellied. LDDS cause you're seeing if you can suppress their excessive cortisol. Tiny white dogs.
- Diabetes mellitus. Pancreas peaces out either by insulin resistance (cats) or stops insulin production (dogs). That's why cats can go into remission; you work on lowering their insulin resistance over time. They present a ton of ways from GI upset with weight loss to urinary signs to DKA/hyperosmolar syndrome. They are why we check blood work with vomiting/diarrhea patients.
Those are the ones I see the most as an ER doc!
Endocrinology is one of my big interests! A big thing is knowing “red flags” for each disorder such as which cause PU/PD and which do not (esp when trying to differentiate Cushings which does, and hypothyroidism which does not). Another one being Na:K ratio and lack of stress leukogram in a sick animal for Addisons. Knowing the reasons behind the biochemical changes on blood work also really helps me remember them. I have a really simplified diagnosis chart for hypothyroidism, hyperthyroidism, Cushings addisons if you’re interested 🙂Please send all the good vibes. Hypo is Addison's because you need to add pred (and usually mineralocorticoids) to treat it. I could always make the hypo - low cortisol connection, but the Addison name never stuck until someone told me to add pred.Hypoadrenocorticism is Addison's because they HypO and Addison's are both vowels.

I had a whole thing typed up because this is still going on and has become a huge emotional/mental drain but meh. I've been in some really intensive therapy these last few months and it helped open my eyes to the narcissistic family dynamic (scapegoat child hereTruly exhausted. Committed to no contact with my older sister on Christmas Eve based on some things said. It’s truly been 32 years in the making, but this was the final straw.
Downside is that because this sister moved herself/her kids in with my mom when she left her husband, I can also no longer see or talk to my mom or other sister (who also is still at home). If they talk to me or see me, she’ll make their lives a living hell. I get that they need to be able to survive as peacefully as possibly with her in the house, It’s already been bad enough for them with her there. It took a lot of intensive therapy and I had to go through all the stages of grief to arrive at acceptance. Those in our lives don’t deserve our presence simply because we share DNA. I’m very sorry, nevertheless. It’s very painful and can be lonely.
Always here if you want to chat privately. This sucks- nearly 5 years out I have bittersweet moments but I don’t regret setting those boundaries, and those boundaries with family let me embrace myself and finally pursue something for me.
HOLY CRAP I got home to find my apartment door wide open and the screen door open too because they were draining my hot water heater (we STILL don’t have hot water in the shower) and my cats were loose because they DIDN’T TELL ME they were coming today. I couldn’t find my boy cat and truly thought he’d gotten out. I did find him in a weird hiding spot. That’s only the half of it (the tech had to leave and I had a doctor’s appointment so my apartment sat unlocked, opened, and unoccupied for I don’t know how long, we had water on the floor in our utility room), and I am just so over it. I’m beyond rage, I’m at that calm plane of existence above being furious.
ETA: for those keeping score, we have not had consistent hot water in our shower since 3/22 🙃

Yeah, it was literally just the shower. And we did have hot water, but only like 2-5 minutes max. Lack of hot water is not an emergency, but a sustained lack makes a unit uninhabitable. If they can't rent it out in with the problem, you can't live in it with the problem. Hot water is a basic amenity in the US. With it just being your shower though, idk how that would be interpreted but personally I would see what your options are at this pointYeah, it was literally just the shower. I’m just struggling because we were already talking about moving anyway, I’m one week away from finals, and we spent the four hours after the maintenance debacle at the ER vet so I’ve just got like no fight left in me. I do not think we should be paying full rent for the month the water was out but I have no idea how to go about negotiating that, especially since they were “putting in an effort” to get it fixed. If they can't rent it out in with the problem, you can't live in it with the problem.
Totally get it. Like the worst time to be dealing with this. if you want to see what your options are, look up a lawyer who deals with tenant rights (could even be a city/county thing?)………..okay that’s a good point. Moving by yourself (+ across the country) is so so so so so hard. I feel like I'm doing tasks that realistically like 4 people should be managing. Girlbossing by yourself is too much sometimes!!!! Time to take a cry break and get back at it.
House GOP Propose $330B in Cuts to Higher Ed Programs
The proposal is part of Republicans’ broader plan to pay for Trump’s tax cuts and other priorities.
More of the same old BS 😒
Ranting here because I've ran out of places to rant🙃 I'm getting induced early because of mild pre-eclampsia so I'm getting induced tomorrow and have been doing twice weekly apts up to where both our parents are to have higher level care. Of course grandparents are excited but my in laws....OMG. I cannot. They have literally called or texted EVERY SINGLE DAY THIS WEEK to "check in". LEAVE ME THE F* ALONE. Today was the same as yesterday, same as the day before. AND they want us to check in tomorrow and I'm like WHY we are literally going to the hospital and unlikely to have the child tomorrow. Especially after I have told them we will let you know if/when we are ready for visitors.
Thanks for coming to my in law rant😅
