I havent got my scores back yet but also pretty sure I'm going to have to redo at least one skill 😬
Ironically have felt really solid like my clinical skills so far lol. Test nerves are something else though 😅
some of it, in retrospect, is entirely my fault and i have a grasp of how i need to correct my actual skills. a lot of it though was just terrible nerves. which, i don’t know how i am going to make the nerves any better the second time around, when the pressure is even higher. i get to remediate but if i fail that, i fail the course.
i feel solid in my real-life small animal skills but the OSCE is just such a rigid test that it’s terrifying— even if it is a skill i have done for years. also everything i failed was large animal, which i have never done before so i guess that makes it a little better.

OSCE test nerves are another level 😭 genuinely it took me almost a full minute to put on gloves bc my hands were so sweaty

i feel this though; why do i become so hyperaware over skills that I've done 100 times??? almost **** myself when i had to demonstrate giving a SQ injection... on a simulation dog 😑

More than halfway through my maternity leave now and my child still doesn't sleep unless in someone's arms. I am dreading adding a work schedule back to this scenario. I'm also definitely nervous about remembering how to doctor. What is a cat? (It's a small dog, right?)

Not sure how much time you're taking off and how small Small Fin is, but we did sleep training at 4 months. We were accidentally co-sleeping cause Baby Bats would only sleep with us and I would fall asleep while holding him. We were all sleeping terribly. We bit the bullet and did sleep training when I'd have 4 days off in a row and could sleep during the day.

Absolutely worth it. And now homeboy sleeps amazing at night. Used to sleep great for naps, but he dropped regular naps forever ago.

Lil' Finn is 7 weeks right now. I'm going back at 12 weeks so we'll still have a little bit of time before we can actually sleep train if we need to. We have a short term plan for us both getting sleep in the meantime if he's still not sleeping solo by the time I go back. It's far from ideal but hopefully will get us through that period of time.

Another job search rant.

I applied for a job that listed a M.S. in genetics or a related field as their preferred qualification. I applied and considering my Ph.D., I was pretty confident I would at least pass their initial review. Nope, I got an email today that said I failed to meet their requirements (even the basic requirement for a B.S. degree, I guess?). They have an appeal process so I submitted a letter just on the off chance that whatever they tell me can help me better present my qualifications next time.

My Ph.D. is a little frustrating because it's from an animal science department that uses the same degree title for all students in the program, whether you're doing genetics or reproduction or nutrition. So even though my dissertation was entirely molecular genetics work, my degree doesn't say that, and I'm anticipating that that's what caused this particular rejection. It's probably the same issue with my B.S. - it's animal science, which they might not be picking up on as a "related" field.

But ugh, I'm really struggling with the "is my graduate degree worthless" thoughts right now :arghh: I made all of the wrong educational choices for the current job market, apparently.

Can you drive to MN to deliver said tea? Also accept Pony Express, carrier pigeon, and text message.
The tea delivery service in Cbus seems to be very slow this week.

Update: the dean sent an email was professionally like “get over it, the world doesn’t revolve around you”
More people need to hear this on a more regular basis.
Idk what it is about vet school, but there is always the handful of people in the class that have literal meltdowns over stuff. Literal. Meltdowns. Like does this happen in med school? Dental school? Ophtho school? It has to, right?

I'm sure you've all experienced similar, but we had 2-3 in my class that would literally stand up with hands raised to b*tch about something to our course coordinator whenever she was around. Or send massive emails to admin with everyone cc'd, or interrupt lecture, fire up the class FB group, there was always something they were freaking out about. One in particular used to say stuff like "I'm not paying all of this tuition money just for you all to _______.' Downright embarrassing, so much second-hand cringe.

Unsurprisingly, the same people had repeat issues throughout clinics. Makes me wonder how they fared once they got out into practice.

According the my college roommate in medical school, there are copious amounts of drama and entitled students there too. I think it’s probably common in advanced degree programs.

It must be some weird combo of feeling like a big fish in a small pond/entitlement/'you work for me' type of mentality.

Separate rant: my old man cat (15y MN DSH) has been pre-/stage 1 CKD for a bit now. He has an appt next week for a UA and BP check, but I pulled blood to send to Idexx through the zoo and his ALT came back a bit high. He got iodine back in 2021 for his thyroid, perhaps he is one of the lucky few that need a redose? I added on a T4 so waiting on that (can't send a bigger panel out through the zoo without burning through our Idexx freebie allotment), but this could explain the recent uptick in vomiting and polydypsia. I assumed his kidney disease had progressed, but all values are normal except BUN which is 2 pts high (meh). But if it is actually hyperthyroidism again, maybe this has been masking his kidney dysfunction and he actually has progressed...ugh.

this phrase triggers me so bad. it’s just completely the wrong way to look at life, reeks of entitlement. a) it’s a privilege to be here b) did you learn nothing in undergrad? this whoooooole thing is not about us being “paying customers” this isn’t a ****in restaurant. this is about us doing whatever we have to do to get through this.

Someone in my class asked why we're being taught by technicians because "they're not doctors". I would literally trust the teaching techs with my life.
Big yikes! Yeah I really can't understand that mentality either, especially from the newer generations of vets since there's been so much culture shift over the years (in a good way). And as we move toward corporatization of vet med, techs don't really 'work for us' anymore. I wonder if that person worked for someone who was holding onto prehistoric ideals at some point?

based on my experience in school so far, i actually imagine this is somebody who had VERY little experience prior to getting in. maybe they are a complete braniac and had a perfect gpa, but they probably were more of a shadow then a member of the team. it doesn’t take very long at all to realize that techs are the backbone of this whooooole thing.

We had someone email our first year course coordinator to say the quizzes were too easy. 🙄 She was a problem child through out the program and she did not have a good time on clinics.

I've definitely been that weirdo that's googled my classmates to see what's happened to them on late nights 🤣

I think it’s probably common in advanced degree programs.

I wonder if a part of it is the socioeconomic levels and maturity levels people come from as a trend. Professional programs tend to have students from higher socioeconomic backgrounds and a lot of folks don't have real world experience. I wouldn't say it's everyone, or even most. But when 30% of the student population comes from this perspective, it becomes a loud minority.

My grandma has always said she wishes that young people were obligated to spend two years after high school performing some sort of community service, like military, peace corp, habitat for humanity, doctors without borders, etc. Where people get exposed to others different from them, people have to contribute to society in some meaningful way, and people gain some perspective. When I was younger, I thought this was lame cause I had my guiding star. But now that I'm older and technology has taken such control of everything, I'm tending to agree with her.

We had someone who transferred because she thought the curriculum was too easy, supposedly.

Yeah there's a few people that I do genuinely, with pure concern, wonder how they could possibly be practicing medicine or working with real people with any success

So sorry I haven't been on this very often recently tehe

But basically during class someone turned around to the people who are usually giggling and said "can you guys like shut up" and then after class one of the girls that was told to shut up pointed at the girl who told her to shut up and said "whats your name? first of all it wasn't us and even if it was us it was really rude of you to say it like that. you could have taken us outside after class or said something else in a nicer way so that was really rude" and everyone else in the back was like O.O and apparently after they left a bunch of people said "yeah nobody likes them" crazyyyyyyyy

And to add to this they are STILL GIGGLING ALL OF THE TIME I don't understand what needs to be said to make it stop

The prof needs to step in. Like. Walk up whatever aisleway there is, staring them down. Some public shaming is in order.
That might be difficult bc we have a new prof almost every class. but yes some more shaming is definitely needed :/

I dont know you or apoptosis, how am i supposed to find your office </3
I'm in the clin path hallway, second door on the right!

I share my office with 3 other people so I look forward to a random student popping in and being like "hi, I'm looking for supershorty?"

The audacity is killing me 😭 like bffr I heard one of them saying one day how they were the class celebrity but not in a good way🧍‍♀️

Crazy because on that same day during a lunch lecture, they were giggling so obnoxiously that someone in the first four rows turned around to look at them. I felt horrible for the lecturer,, I genuinely don't understand why you can't control yourself and just step out of the classroom if something is so funny you'd disrupt a vet's presentation

THE CLASS CELEBRITY WHAT thats actually crazy. They are usually playing games on their ipads in class and are laughing at it together. Why even come to class at all then?

Genuinely, half the classes they're disrupting don't have required attendance. Just stay home and watch it and you can laugh and talk all you want!! I am pretty non-confrontational but one more bad interaction and I'm just gonna have to say "SHHHH"

Most vet school classes are structured like this. Need to figure out the most intimidating and/or aggressive Prof and say, "Yo Prof, we've been having issues with these girls. We've tried to settle this as students and they don't think they're in the wrong. Can you scare the **** out of them, please?"

As a grown up doctor, I'd be all over this. But sadly, I don't get to be a prof at this point in my career

I think they may be able to figure out who is the super short one in the office if you’re there 😂

Sprandy would totally tell them to stfu

my physio course is structured this way, but I'm not complaining. the Dr who taught the last 8 lectures on blood physio was this fine man from Italy. let's just say I wasn't paying attention to the coagulation cascade..
