Haha wasn’t me but I’d sure enjoy it about now. My feet get so swollen running around the hospital 😫

I think I’m okay bc I’ve been very careful about PPE etc since being pregnant but they had to decontaminate and close our ICU

That might be why your insurance won't cover 30 of them. Regardless, still try to find a local pharmacy, they're MUCH better to deal with and want to help people stay on their expensive meds.

Ngl I have seen applicants with 0 (or near 0) vet hours get in.

I was JUST reading through that thread.

How anyone could genuinely think they could forgo a basic requirement applying to such competitive programs is completely beyond me. It’s even more concerning that they are supposedly a full-fledged adult.

For sure. But not every school requires it; vmcvm technically doesn't. Idk the full context of the post you're talking about, but technically possible to get in with very minimal vet/no clinical experience; it'd be pretty darn hard though 😅

sure one could- but would a school take someone with 0 hours and no vet LOR over someone with competitive hours and a vet LOR? non-trad or not, doesn’t matter.
 
I just finished reading that Reddit thread. I don't know what programs they're talking to that say the vet rec letter is just a suggestion, but they're getting played HARD. Talk about setting money on fire just because they have lots of it. Some people. I can't WAIT to see their post in a year or so complaining about their rejections.

I don't want to say this about anyone who's exploring this field, but I genuinely think this is someone who thinks being a DVM is going to be a walk in the park or doing this for laughs. To keep arguing about something that others in the field are saying is a requirement. I would love to have their level of confidence.

Being rich is definitely a strength though, lol.

On a different note, based on what I read, I don't think they're saying vet hours are optional. They just don't have any right now and are shooting their shot while they work on acquiring those hours and a rec letter from a DVM. And since they're in a financial position where they can afford to swallow those app fees, they should do it if they're so inclined. At least....I REALLY hope they're not thinking that experience hours in a competitive MEDICAL field is a, "maybe," and not a, "you 100% need to have this so you know what you're getting into."

But Vampy, don't you know? Vetmed and cybersecurity have SO much in common that they're practically the same field! Never mind the fact that one of them has both a scientific AND emotional burden so crushing that people-regretfully-commit suicide over it and the other doesn't. (At least I don't think most people develop emotional attachments to the network system they're monitoring.) And we all know that taking care of animals-medical fosters too!- is all you need to know if you're ok with euthanizing pets or dealing with angry/grieving clients.

I'm sure they'll be FIIIINNNNNEEE.

It's so telling that they refuse to respond to any comments asking them how they think they'll be able to handle the mental toll of being one with absolutely 0 prior understanding or exposure of being a veterinarian

what baffles me is the attitude towards the trad “21-22 year olds” as if some of these students (SOME EVEN YOUNGER THAN THAT) don’t have a plethora of unique life experiences at just 21-22 years of age.

they’re right on one part- it’s not cookie cutter and it IS a case by case basic. where they are wrong is, that only becomes the case after you meet the minimum requirements for an application review. THEN they decide whose experiences they like best, whose essays, whose dare i say…LOR!!!

My rant, which is irrelevant to the ongoing conversation: we had a big immob yesterday and I am absolutely paying the price for it today. A keeper was kind enough to get me a bucket to sit on but I can barely walk, and that was just from a lot of bending, crouching, and kneeling. I didn't lift anything major. I couldn't get out of bed without help this morning.

I've also had pulsatile tinnitus in my right ear for two weeks now, it is nonstop unless I put pressure on my TMJ. My BP is fine. I'm honestly thinking I might snap and lose it soon lol.

Cherry on top, but yesterday was my annual review. It went fine, no issues, except the majority of it was my boss telling me how 'there wasn't really a good time for me to have a baby' and 'I guess we'll just see how this goes for us while you're gone.' Like cool as if I already wasn't worried enough about my career and longevity at this place before I became pregnant...

how is this okay????


(if men had to carry a baby for nine months with all the bells and whistles that come with pregnancy, and then be told they cant get paid leave, or they have a limit of six weeks, or any of the millions of other things women are told from an employer regarding their pregnancy- this wouldn’t be a thing…)

Would you believe that my boss is a woman?! Unfortunately it's not illegal to be a terrible boss, or a narcissist at that. I'm the first female vet at this zoo to have kids besides my boss, who has hers like 20-25ish years ago and was the only vet. So she just got to hire a temp and come back to her job as she left it. And when you're the most important person in the world, it's okay for you to have kids....if you're not, it's an inconvenience for everyone

Jesus christ. If she's that worried about it, she could have hired someone temporarily to help while you're on maternity leave...I'm sure there are people who would jump at that opportunity.

Yes because for whatever reason it's not uncommon for women in higher level positions to decide to be ****ty to other women. You're not the first person I've heard from that specifically had issues with a female boss (even one who has kids...) around being pregnant. It's extra awful.
