My mom sent me fudge in the mail 😍

Mmmm
I got an unexpected box of pumpkin coffee in the mail from my mom last week. Really made me smile 😀
Moms are the best.

I have had fingernails for 3 weeks! 😀 This is a huge feat for me. I've pretty much been a picker all my life(can't bite my nails, so I pick) and my nails have always been short. For some reason, I have just stopped picking. I have not had the urge to pick at all for 3 weeks. I have had to file them down 4 times already or else they go through my gloves. 😍

Which makes me think that I am finally heading down the right path in life? I hope.

My fiancé messaged me on FB!!! 😍 Ahhhh so excited. :biglove: Got to chat for a few minutes before he disappeared. My night has been made. Support our Troops everyone!! 😀

Wish I could get myself to suddenly stop doing that. I don't pick my nails exactly, but the skin around them. It's kind of become my go to thing to do when I'm bored, stressed and anxious. I almost kind of stopped earlier last year around the time of my interviews because I didn't want to be wearing bandaids or have super swollen fingers from them being irritated and inflamed. Then I got laid off and my progress was ruined.

I love my mom, but she isn't too good at the care packages thing haha. Although once she sent me a giant chocolate cheesecake for my birthday (first year of undergrad, all of 30mins away) and last year she sent me a clip out from the National Enquirer- it was a blue dot that was supposed to give you what you wished for if you put it against your forehead and made your wish :smack:

I do this too. I am currently being good- I'm working in a lab where I frequently hold things under a microscope. Seeing my fingers magnified for the first time disgusted me enough that I'm making an effort to stop!

I'm also finding that running a lip balm stick that is high in coco butter/vitaminE around my nail everynight before bed is preventing new cracking/peeling (which leads to picking) more than any cuticle cream or intense hand lotion I've ever tried.

I started biting my nails the first day of kindergarten and never stopped. I successfully grew them out for interviews  and then bit them till they bled waiting for answers 😳

My dad always told me he'd put hot sauce on my fingers if I didn't stop biting them. He was wondering why I didn't care. I never bit my nails, I always picked.

I mostly stopped now because it really hurts to have an open spot and then get bleach on it at work. :scared:

My parents did tape, hot sauce, bitternails (bleh), bribed me with kittens and manicures, it never worked. I even ended up liking the Bitternails 🙄 :meanie:

when i paint my nails, i don't obsessively pick at the skin. something new i discovered this year in class because i was bored and i could haha

My boyfriend picks/bites his nails a lot and I nudge him when I catch him. Now all I have to do is look at him when he is biting/picking and he stops right away:meanie:

My nails split and peel. Nothing helps. Manicures, nail polish, clipping them. So instead I pick at them and make it worse. When interviews come around I shall be getting a manicure so they will look nice for a couple of days.

I have a big problem with that too. I try to be really good about taking care of my nails myself and that seems to help. Try getting one of those buffer file things with the different levels of filing on each side. If you keep up with that regularly it helps to keep them from peeling. Mine get worse if I paint them because it dries them out. Also putting cuticle oil/cream all over your nails helps too.

rave/rant...........2 days of school cancelled in preparation for hurricane sandy.

meaning my biochem exam for tomorrow got cancelled. which is cool and all and i get more time to study, especially since we don't know when it is rescheduled to.

BUT: i'm freaking out about this hurricane and how unprepared i feel. i have candles flashlights water and cereal/bread/granola bars.

i'm happy i have more time to study but i feel like it's going to bite us in the ass somehow.

matches and batteries? Also do you guys have to board any windows? Extra water for pets?

Cell phone fully charged? You can do a cooler with more foods like deli meats and cheeses?

I don't know, I have never been near a hurricane, but those things come to mind.

It's a category 1...and a weak category 1. You'll be fine. It blows my mind that school is cancelled for it. Anything below a category 3 isn't worth waking up for, let alone stressing over.

I am shocked at how many schools (including vet schools) and workplaces are already closed...NYC subways already shut down... NYPD on mandatory 12 hour shifts all week,

. It just amazes me. I feel like people never used to be this paranoid about weather. There were some many times I'd have classes in the middle of blizzards or floods and not be able to get home the roads would be so bad haha.

My undergrad is closed for Mon and Tues - and on campus residents being evacuated. Craziness. Though last fall we did get hit pretty hard and lost power for about 3-4 days. Guess we'll see what happens tonight!

Aren't they predicting that the storm will become much more serious as it moves north?

They are calling it "Frankenstorm" because the hurricane will be a hybrid storm of hurricane Sandy and a winter storm.

The central east coast cancels schools for any change in weather🙄. A dusting of snow? Close school. Wind? Close school. Rained too much? Close school. It MIGHT snow? Yeah, close school. The midwest is hardcore and we never get snow days. We did get one my sophmore year, but it was a huge storm and it was the first snow "recess" since the 70's.

I'm not sure what the water situation is for you guys, but it might be worth it to run a few buckets full of water. If there's flooding, you may be under a boil-order for a couple of days due to backed up water/sewage systems, and it'll probably be good to have at least a few gallons on hand that you know are safe and don't need to be treated.

I grew up in northern MI but have been in Baltimore for the past 6 years, and if you lived on the east coast you would understand the difference... Higher population densities and poor preparedness for certain conditions (few snowplows, snow-ready infrastructure, etc.) cause prolonged blackouts and barren grocery stores, both of which warrant the closings.

I grew up in Washington DC and there were plenty of times (like what I stated) in which closing school was unnecessary.

Try soaking your nails in whole milk for as long as you can a few times a week. (I'm thinking like 10-15 minutes, about as long as I would have time for.) Since starting work at dairies, I've noticed my nails are much thicker/stronger! Milk gets in the gloves, nails like milk apparently!

Truth. All of my FB friends (except those from up here, obviously) are posting about no school/work and I'm just waiting for it to be some rain and wind.

Home alone. Kitchen cleaned. Laundry in the washer. Enjoying the living room by myself before the others get home. Haha

Besides the bad habit of nail picking/biting, dry skin really does make a huge difference with nails and especially cuticle health. As a man my quality of nail care is probably not quite the same as you ladies, but I used to have some bad eczema on my hands (bad enough that patches of skin would sometimes crack and bleed during the winter) and along with that dryness came the issue of unhealthy nails; I had nasty cuticles and lots of painful and unsightly hangnails. I followed the directions of my dermatologist which was at night, rub in some cuticle cream, and then moisturize your hands (he recommended Elta Creme, and I think it works fantastically and it's not too expensive), then put a layer of something a little thicker over that to really help hold in the moisture (Doc recommended Aquaphor and I like it and still use it years later), and finally top it off with a pair of cotton gloves while you sleep. That and the occasional use of cuticle nippers to get rid of hang nails and dead skin really did the trick. I will admit at first that I did have an Rx strength cream just to get my hands to the point where they weren't on fire anymore, but after that I relied only on the OTC stuff and it still continued to work. To each their own, but I haven't had problems with my hands/nails in a long time with pretty minimal maintenance, so if it could fix my nasty hands I think there's something to it.

Ah. So much for giving you benefit of the doubt. So, anyway, that's why they have a lower threshold for closings here.

Grew up in NY, lived near the coast in NH for 6 years.
They NEVER canceled for anything. Floods, blizzards, hurricanes, ice storms, you name it, I've driven to school in it. Unless the electricity was already out, we went to class.
Now that I've graduated, of course, they close everything down a week a head of time.

The subways has something partly to do with literally closing them so that water can't get it and mess the electric stuff up. Or so my public transit-obsessed father has told me. Apparently it got really close to flooding into the tunnels one of the recent storms. But I do agree that it seems early to have already done so this evening.

Agreed about general ridiculousness, esp. snow in DC suburbs. I think I've had many "snow days" where I didn't actually see snow. Sometimes there would be some further out upcountry, but not always.

I have a physics exam Tuesday I don't want to study for but have to at this point, since the university has only made plans for Monday.

Expecting to lose power for a few days, though. At least it won't be 100 degrees outside like the week it was out early July.

Times are changing. Penn for example has been severely criticized for remaining open when the city is shutting down. They obviously have given in to the criticism (I am not complaining now, but when we have to make up those classes with loooooong days, you better believe I will be whining like a newborn). When I was an undergrad I think they would have stayed open during a nuclear attack.

Got some great pictures on Friday when we were hiking. Here is Ivy again. Getting big!

I was an undergrad about a century after you, but pretty much the same deal 😛 The year after I graduated, the president (or someone important) slipped and ice and broke a leg. There were a couple student injuries while I as an undergrad, but apparently, student injuries dont result in change! Since then, they have closed at even the slightest threat of inclement weather.

While eating breakfast with my husband at one of our favorite cafes, i received an email from the University of Glasgow saying I have been picked for an interview. I hysterically burst into tears and my husband along with the wait staff starts freaking out. I couldn't talk and just had to hand him my phone.

I never thought I'd rave about being woken up at 5am by my phone ringing, but when it's my fiancé Who is 7,000 miles away, I was jumping for joy 😍 😀
