The notes for our next exam are 710 pages long. That does not include the required reading from Fossum's surgery or the required reading from the Diagnostic Imaging book. Nor does that include needing to practice suturing techniques and gloving techniques for our OSCE exam. It is not feasible any longer to re-write notes/condense into flashcards. I feel like if I read all of the notes for an exam, I have accomplished a small miracle.

For your suturing....what are you using for practice material? My OSCE is on Halloween, so I should probably start practicing....there's fake skin in the practice lab and the profs said we could just go buy meat from the grocery store (I guess tongue is a good one?). Just curious what you were recommended. 🙂

We have not actually started suturing yet, my suturing lab isn't until the 1st of November (if I remember correctly). Our OSCE is in December. I have heard from the year above me that banana peel works really well. I also purchased a bunch of expired suture material from amazon, so that should arrive soonish so that I can actually practice once we have learned how. 🙂

i've heard pigs feet. there are a variety of relatively cheap simulation materials out there and theres always the homemade options with towels and such

So this is kinda stupid, but really annoying. Up until this year the school hasn't policed the trademark on the CVM logo, so all the clubs made generic vet school merchandise and sold it for their fundraisers. Starting next semester all logos are going to be trademark policed. We're not sure how it's going to work yet, but basically no longer can a club sell a polo that says Foxy's CVM. Instead it has to more prominently feature the club. Which will greatly decrease the amount of merchandise each club will sell (because used to everyone would buy stuff, now only club members will). This will serve to make stuff more expensive and means that I can no longer still get cool Foxy CVM stuff. So, in the past 6 weeks I've spent way too much money getting the vet school merchandise I want (a fleece, a few polos, a vest, and a few t-shirts). Whereas in previous years you could always buy it the next year, if our class wants anything we have to buy it this semester. Most of these things are things that I think are a good idea to spend the money on, I just wish I could have slowly amassed a collection rather than buying it all at once. Alas.

Ok, cool! I have to practice a decent amount to reach the level they want....maybe this would have been easier if I had done better in Home Ec in Junior High.....

Rant?

I wish our clubs sold more stuff. Love school wear!

I have a couple of daisies in storage. If I ever move I could provide them.

Cow tongue is what I learned on.

i love having a private gym at our apartment complex! its midterms week and i've been going there for a couple of hours a day to just be by myself, have free air conditioning, and walk/bike while i study. such an excellent way to work off stress! couple this with the oral ulcer i currently have that makes me want to eat less and maybe i'll lose weight this week instead of gain it

I Jung got an opportunity to shadow for a day at the states diagnostic laboratory! He asked if I wanted to do a one time thing or to do it regularly and I was super awkward since I'd obviously like it to be more than once but I was like "well one time just to see what goes on would be good but then maybe more than once!" I was just so excited but also nervous I didn't know what to say and if it was about something I was less excited about I'd be upset with myself but I'm so happy that I'm not haha

I also forgot to ask what to wear so I'll have to call back soon I guess but it'll be awkward since I don't have his number just the receptionist.

I hope it's as cool as I'm expecting it to be!

Escalla, I think anything but actual animal tissue is crap. It's -so- different - animal tissue is a lot easier to suture! So I'd buy meat or try the banana peel 👍

foxy, we just...asked our school if we could use the CVM logo for our merchandise. They agreed. Not sure if that's an option?

Thanks guys! We originally received half a pig head to slice up and suture for the teaching lab, but obviously I can't find those that easily....knowing what they're using for the OSCE might be handy.

I didn't previously know that human surgeons all mostly perform hand ties...not instrument knots. Fun fact of the day.

I am PROFOUNDLY thankful for my buddy binder from the upper years.

I'm feeling a random surge of motivation tonight. Concepts just seem to be clicking and my capacity for memorizing is great right now. **** is going to get done!

I need to bottle this and sell it.

I want some. I'm watching catfish.

I'm thinking oral supplement that you mix with OJ. Gotta get that Vitamin C! Injectable would be better, but don't want anyone running around with track marks.

Actually, is that what's recommended these days to keep from getting sick? Vit C supplements? My class is getting sick and damnit, I am not going to catch that ****.

OMG GUISE MY SCHOOL IS OFFERING ANIMAL NUTRITION NEXT SEMESTER I'M SO HAPPY
now I don't have to fork out money I don't have taking a correspondence course :soexcited::banana:

Wahoooo, just found out my hard drive isn't completely ruined!! It crashed a few days ago, and silly me hasn't backed up in forever... And while I have to pay a good bit for the repairs, its way cheaper than if I'd had to purchase a new computer, and the repair guy said he was able to access my data, woohoo! Lesson learned, time to immediately back it all up...

My dog is going in this morning to contribute to the betterment of his breed! He is getting his annual bloodwork/everything for the Golden Retriever Lifetime Study! The only heartbreaking thing is that he is giving me the saddest eyes this morning because he can't have breakfast 🙁

I got my first and probably last 100% of my vet school career, on a 25 question rabbit quiz. Too bad the course isn't really worth anything. But after the mental destruction that was ophtho/neuro yesterday, I needed the confidence boost.

Successfully drew blood on a rabbit today! FIRST STICK (and my first time drawing from a bunbun!). Very excited to touch living things.

100% is a 100%, doesn't matter the course. You'll use that rabbit knowledge when you're a lab animal vet! 🙂

Got an awesome care package from my aunt today, which included a tie-dye "Peace, Love, and Cows" t-shirt. Also included a copy of "Fleming's Vest-Pocket Veterinary Adviser" published in 1904. I've been flipping through it, and some of the treatments they recommended back then are hilarious. For example, the recommended treatment for milk fever was to use a bicycle pump or similar apparatus to pump the udder full of as much air as possible. 😱

And I move into my new apartment the day after tomorrow! 😀

And I was invited to (Canadian) Thanksgiving dinner this weekend, which was totally unexpected and definitely beats my original plan of drinking a bottle of wine alone with my anatomy textbook.

All in all, today was pretty good.

I just found out I was chosen for one of the Wilderness First Responder Course Scholarships so I can afford it!!!! Yay!!!!

The thought was that increasing the pressure in the mammary gland would decrease milk production, and therefore decrease the severity of the milk fever (hypocalcemia)

I figured the thinking must have been something along those lines. But geeze, the mastitis that must have caused . . .

This past summer one of the clinics I work at was remodeled, and while moving stuff I found a similarly aged veterinary book....totally made me laugh. I wish I had kept it. The diet recommendations were the best. Apparently your dog needs 5 meals a day with bread, raw eggs and meat, and an apple. 😀

This seems like a pretty good plan to me! Turkey is better though.

Actually, I'd avoid Thanksgiving if I could. But I have no excuses with living in the same city....I could do with more study time and less family drama. The leftovers are so good though....it's a constant internal struggle.

lol! I found one like that for cats in a used book store! If I remember correctly, they recommended a slice of bread soaked in milk for breakfast, or scrambled eggs and buttered bread. And milk should be given at least three times a day for adult cats. I ended up taking the book because I was afraid Joe Q. Public would pick it up and think that's actually an acceptable diet. 😱

I've been pretty bummed that I'm going to miss American Thanksgiving for the next four years. This year will be the first time in my life that I haven't spent it with family. So I'm happy to have a nice Thanksgiving dinner, even if it's a month early and 600 miles away from home. I'll just bring the bottle of wine along with me!

I know what you mean! I was super bummed about not being able to go home for Thanksgiving last year, it was probably my most homesick week. Luckily, one of my Canadian friends also invited me to their thanksgiving dinner celebration, and I hosted my own a few weeks later with the help of one or two American friends. So much fun! Would obviously have chosen family over it, but it was a close second. Hope you enjoy your celebrations this year!

Also just for my daily rave, it's my birthday! Got surprised by a really thoughtful gift from my flatmate (wasn't expecting anything since I've only been living with her for two weeks), and a friend I interned with at a sanctuary in Florida 2 and a half years ago is coming into London for the weekend! Haven't seen her since the internship, so this should be good fun. Looking forward to pub celebrations tonight and tomorrow! 😀

My friend just a couple of days ago bought me a book from an antique shop written by a veterinarian in 1916 on sheep diseases and predation. It says that all coyotes should be eradicated because they have no beneficial role in nature and that bears are NOT predatory animals, don't really eat meat and just have a bad reputation

I have a working interview next week 😀

I wasn't sure how my interview for veterinary assistant went. Their position is very client-oriented, which I have little experience with. This is the first time they have interviewed someone who did not have a veterinary assistant degree.

I am super stoked but super nervous. Talking is only my strong suit when I am very passionate about something.

I am not sure how to prepare at all... maybe read up on basic procedures, vaccines and things like that.

Tomorrow is my veggie-versary (it is also Canadian thanksgiving). I have gone 10 years without eating meat 😀

I think I've done a pretty good job a disproving some of the myths I have encountered: vegetarians are sickly, are protein deficient, they have to combine certain amino acids at every meal or they won't get enough protein, that they need meat, dairy and eggs to live and that they cannot build muscle or succeed in the gym.

I'm proud of my accomplishments. I am thankful that a lot of people have supported me along the way (I am also thankful that I had the courage to tell the losers to screw off). I am thankful that most people want to see me succeed in the veterinary world. Despite my views, I still want to be involved with animal health care and wellness. It is what makes me happy.

Hopefully I'll be back in university this time next year, alert and clear minded.

Today, I get to see my gorgeous mother get married on the beach <3. So glad I could be here for this, even if it meant sacrificing a weekend of studying for my exams Monday and Tuesday. I've been looking forward to this for a long time!

I'm at 5 years this month! 🙂 I'm also a very active runner/student/mom of toddler/vet assistant/horseback rider who could not do it all being protein deficient. Good for you for helping to dispel those beliefs!

Moved into my new apartment! Still have a few odds and ends at my old place and I need to go back and clean before I return the key, but otherwise the bulk of it is done. I'm already 1000x happier and more comfortable here than I ever was at the old apartment, so I'm glad I made the right decision. 😍

This morning my tablet wouldn't turn on (which is a HUGE problem since I still don't have my laptop back), but after one call to tech support I've got it working again!

Happy (Canadian) Thanksgiving!!!!

Technically is tomorrow, but I always celebrate on Sunday. Looking forward to turkey tonight!

And Yorkshire pudding. Yumm.
