Yeah... that’s rough. Not defending your coworker, but I’ve found that a lot of people in this field have to make jokes and make light of death in order to keep the compassion fatigue from burning them out. I went to a club meeting about this, and the way the dr explained it to us is that it’s morbid and would never happen around clients, but it keeps us alive at the end of the day.

Edit: I wasn’t sure so I wanted to check this before, but according to the AVMA Euthanasia Guide, gunshot IS an acceptable method in some instances. Which is... hard to think about. But different people have different connections with animals than I do...
Just an FYI, in PA it is no longer legal to shoot your dog, unless it is in acute need of euthanasia with no means of getting it to a vet in time (example given was overnight in an area with no 24hr vet). I imagine other states may have similar laws?

Oh maybe. I wasn’t advocating it, and I don’t know what state OP is from. I’m pretty sure it’s still legal in TX & OK, but I was going off of AVMA euthanasia guide, not any state legislation!

I can't believe VMCAS opens tomorrow. Something hit me on my way to class this morning and I started freaking the heck out. I think it's crazy that many of us think about applying to vet school our whole lives and then one day it's actually time to do the darn thing [emoji33]

When my horse got older and her navicular disease wasn’t manageable anymore, we chose to donate her to a big cat sanctuary in the area, where they go the gun shot route and use the meat to feed the cats. I was only 14 at the time, and even though it was sad I felt good about being able to help the animals in the sanctuary. I guess since then the method itself doesn’t bother me, but I certainly don’t laugh about it, and it’s not what I would prefer in every case.

This is commonly done in my area. I think it’s a great alternative as horse remains injected with barbiturates pose a lot of environmental threats with chemicals leaching into the soil, potential for the remains to be ingested by wildlife, etc. I have had several horses who would FREAK if they got a sight/smell/sound of a big cat though... so I wonder if this would be a viable option for every horse if the number 1 goal was to ensure a peaceful death? I imagine it depends on the sanctuary and its set-up (having an area far away from the cats to perform euthanasia and capability to move the body), etc. Personally I’ve only ever seen one horse euthanized (by lethal injection) and it really stuck with me and is one of the reasons I’m not interested in being an equine vet, along with MANY other reasons. I think it’s the way they fall to the ground... Regardless, you made a very mature decision for a 14-year-old and I am sorry for the loss of your horse, even if it was years ago 🙁

I not only PR'd my squat clean today by 15#, I also FINALLY got my first ring muscle up!!! I'm so freaking pumped right now. I just wish I had video evidence of it happening. Didn't think it was going to, so I didn't have my coach take one. And then I couldn't get a second one.

What hike?
Lakes of the clouds by Westcliff (Not RNP). It's technically 10.6 mi but that's from a different trail head than we took. It's really rocky and very steep in some places and as you can tell snow might have been a factor also [emoji28] my knees hurt soooo bad right now.

Beautiful. If you get up to Estes Park, I highly recommend the Ute Trail off the divide. That's my home town

Thanks for the recommendation! Last summer the SO and I were in Estes so we went to RMNP and did Emerald Lake. I likes that one a bit shorter and not as steep and Rocky so easier in the knees. There's lots of trails up around there I'd love to do but alas I live so far away 🙁

My SO has bad knees but loved it. All down hill, only steep for the middle 1/3rd of hike. Long though, 6 hrs. Perfect for Z and @staff_wielder

I went home for a few days to have my truck serviced before my summer job starts on Monday and my parents bought me an iPhone. My old phone, which was 5+ years old and not a smart phone, just wouldn’t die. I hate replacing things if they still work but as I kept finding out first year I really needed the expanded functionality to communicate quickly with people. Also, I needed a better maps/navigation system since part of my job this summer may involve driving around the state and I don’t want to get lost in Appalachia and end chained up in some anti-gov’ment hellbilly’s root cellar.

I just graduated yesterday!!! My whole family was there including my 88 year old grandma who made the trek with my aunt, uncle, and cousin from NY to MA for it (which wasn't easy for my grandma who has difficulty walking)!! We had an amazing dinner and then today my mom and I went birding early in the morning (we're both bird lovers) and the first bird we saw (besides a bunch of American Robins and Starlings) was a Red-Tailed Hawk on telephone wires (we saw him on the way there) but once we got there, we almost immediately saw a GOLDEN EAGLE!!!!! We'd only seen them in raptor rehab centers so this was AMAZING!!! We proceeded to observe a whole plethora of birds among 2 locations!! These birds include Northern Flickers (the male was doing a courtship dance), American Goldfinches, a bunch of Grey Catbirds, Baltimore Orioles, a Wood Thrush, a Yellow Warbler, a Magnolia Warbler, and the last thing we saw was a pregnant White-Tailed Deer!!! She said it was the best mother's day gift she has ever gotten 😀 We finished out the day with breakfast with the family at a lovely local diner and I was able to give my family a tour of our incredible campus farm which included petting baby goats, little lambs, seeing some foals, and teaching my cousin (10 years old) about Barn Swallows.
On a sadder note, once my family left, it was time for me to go in to my lab for my last day of work (I work(ed) in animal care in a Zebra Finch lab at my school). I have taken care of these nearly 250 Zebra Finches for almost 3 years and it was incredibly bittersweet to band my last 6 fledglings! But I know good things are ahead of me now :biglove:

I might be dead from my knees down...~3000 elevation gain, 7hours, and 12 miles up and back and this is what you get! Pictures never do true justice for nature's beauty.

Hahaha for sure! Long day hikes are our thing. Our knees are also still good n strong yet! I was in Evergreen over Christmas and I saw Mt. Evans was not far away; I was tempted. Also, don't make me feel sad about Colo -- it got up to 90's this weekend here in DC and Z was not happy 🙁

It's been over 90 already don't be sad because of that lol

Last week I was hiking and saw a scarlet tanager! We get a ton of awesome birds at my house up here in the woods but that one was particularly unique.

Was it a male?? I think they're stunning!! I've always wanted to see a Lazuli Bunting and Indigo Bunting as well (it's really cool how they're all in the same family 🙂 )
Favorite bird song though...White-Breasted Nuthatch 🙂

Yes, a male 🙂 We had an indigo bunting come to our feeder once last year!

We get a few really cool ones here and there - rosebreasted grosbeak, yellow bellied sap-sucker, the indigo bunting - but our common visitors are bluebirds, cardinals, nuthatches, titmouses (titmice?), Carolina wrens, TONS of woodpeckers (hairy, downy, pileated, red-bellied), doves, gold finches, purple finches, fox sparrows, the occasional cowbird, blue jays...not to mention the RTH and Coopers/Sharp-shinned hawks that like to eye my chickens :nono:

It took me so long to realize that you didn't say "scarlet teenager" and weren't making a joke about weird young people hiking in the woods.

That is soooo freaking cool!!!!!! I'm currently working with a research group that is mist netting and we caught some beautiful birds last week!!
In order clockwise starting on the upper right: Male Yellow Warbler, Male Black and White Warbler, Male Chestnut-Sided Warbler, and Male Rose-Breasted Grosbeak :biglove:
And you keep those hawks away from those chickens!!!

@that redhead Can I just say I love that I found someone to talk about birds with?? :biglove::biglove::biglove:
Right back atcha 🙂 I should find some of the feeder pictures my husband has taken - nothing fancy but still pretty.

I wish @roughleggedhawk were still around here - she was a classmate of mine (and @Coquette22) and is quite literally The Bird Queen. She has an encyclopedic knowledge of birds!

I enjoy how different bird watching is from place to place. I've seen all of these birds really frequently since I spend so much time between CO and TX and between those two places you can find a ton of unique bird species. The city I live in in TX has actually been named the "birdiest city in the US" a few times because it's smack in the middle of so many migratory flyways. Though I prefer going birdwatching for goofy shorebirds, it's got great spots for finding crested caracara, too, which is always cool.

Crested Caracaras are absolutely beautiful!!!!

My trainee at the rehab centre today was a fireman. A very attractive young fireman. Who in his spare time decided he wanted to help animals and had been bringing in wildlife for years.

I had an absolutely wonderful shift.
Update: I am now going on a date with this attractive young fireman.

Indigo bunting come through our area every spring. I remember one morning I woke up to a tapping at my window and opened my eyes to see TWO indigo bunting staring at me! They are so pretty.

I love them!!! 😍
There was a cute little one in the hospital at the aviary I worked at. He liked to bite but his beak was so tiny it was just kind of adorable.

I just got my grades back for my last undergrad semester and I got a 4.0!!!!! 😀 I've never gotten a 4.0 before and this was essentially my last opportunity to get it and I'm soooo excited!!! I'm really proud of myself because they weren't easy classes, there were 3 500 level classes (Ornithology, Comparative Physiology, and Physiology of Reproduction), Physics 2, and a Boer Goat Practicum 😀

Earlier today, I was accepted to a local university to study computer science and information technology. Woo. As I've previously mentioned here before, I enjoy coding as a bit of hobby already, so it'll be awesome to be able to hopefully make a career of it since the whole "becoming a veterinarian" thing didn't pan out so well. Almost all of my credits from my original university transferred, so I'll just need to take the major courses. Also, since my employer offers a pretty generous amount of money for educational assistance, I won't have to take out much - if anything - in additional loans. Which is awesome.

...but even if I did have to pay for the entire thing in loans, the debt from obtaining the two BS degrees combined would still be less expensive than what it would have cost me to finish the DVM. Chew on that, I guess.

Anyway, I'm excited to start this fall.
This is awesome, and I'm happy and excited for you! Plus, with continued technological advancements you could end up working for pet wearable tech, new diagnostics, or who knows what else.

I went to PT this morning for the first time since surgery and it was agreed that my ankle was doing exceptionally well and I can jump ahead in the PT protocol a bit! I’m so happy with how it turned out I’m scrapping my summer plans to get it done on the other ankle before second year starts. I’ve been able to ditch my leg brace on the post-surgery ankle and it’s possible that after getting the other one done I won’t have to use leg braces at all! I’d be able to wear normal-ish shoes! Maybe!

Just got a free box of the Honest Kitchen dog food for my greyhound. It retails for $125 so I am happy about getting it for free lol.

Any other programs people know of where vet students can get discounts? I have heard of feeding programs but I think I will have to wait for fall for those, when I actually start school.

I think Hills, Purina, and Royal Canin are the standard ones.

If I can briefly return to bird nattering, I saw some pretty birds today (I was leaning toward loons but not sure.....cause I barely identify any birds on the reg...) but my phone had died so no photos. Much disappoint. But I was at the beach so......still a rave!!!

I didn't get a chance to take any photos, but got some fabulous bird watching in on my camping trip this weekend. Saw a lot of lovely mountain bluebirds, some western tanagers, a ton of red-winged blackbirds, some violet-green swallows, various gulls, black-billed magpies, and a very curmudgeonly double-crested cormorant. There's probably more, but that's what I can think of off the top of my head.
