RAVE HERE thread

Hi everyone!
This is my first post! I hope I am posting in the correct place but, I just wanted to mention how grateful I am that I found this forum. This fall I will be a third time applicant and I have been dealing with a lot of self-doubt and anxiety due to the rejections. I often get it in my head that I'm the only one who is going through this devastating feeling and no one can relate .. that is until I found everyone here! Everyone's comments are so supportive and truly understand the struggle of chasing vet med as a career. Your advice although not directed at me, has still been incredibly encouraging! Thanks everyone and have a lovely day 🙂

It took me 4 applications to get in, so you're definitely not alone. It's been a long journey, but the year I got in (this one) I got into multiple schools.

I was incredibly disappointed every year I would apply with what I thought was an excellent application only to get rejected while others who were coming out of second year undergrad got in, but it comes at its own time. Good luck!

Wow kind of a sad/happy post. But ugh I love Disney/marvel stuff so over the years I have thoroughly enjoyed Agents of Shield and really love all the characters and directions they’ve taken with it, even if I didn’t get it at first. But they’re ending the show 🙁 Not this current season which I’m actually thoroughly enjoying despite being a little behind. I didn’t think they’d be able to continue it after season five because things. But they did and just idk I have mixed feels. I’m happy they get another season to actually finish the show but I’m also sad because it’s a GREAT show. But yeah if you’ve never watched it, go watch it, because it’s great!!!

Hi CanadatoUS2019! Thanks so much 🙂 I am actually from Canada! Did you apply to any Canadian schools? And would I be able to ask you some questions about applying to American schools? I can send you a pm if that's okay!

Sure feel free to PM me. I applied to some US schools that had DVM/PhD's. I didn't get accepted there. I also applied to the RVC (got in) but ultimately chose not to go because its too expensive. And then I also applied to UCVM and WCVM and got into both. I decided to stay here in Canada!

I love all things Marvel but for some reason never got around to watching the show. Need to add it to my binge list.

They do the full $0.58 per mile, so it should help pay for Sharon the Subaru. And I like driving (here, not like in Houston) so that part is fine. I'll just have to be careful about Starbucks and stuff...

And I'm going to look at Podcasts, which I have not previously listened to many of.
having driven where you live, I cannot process this.

I don’t particularly like the other drivers, but it’s not four packed lanes of traffic and no way can you make it over two lanes to exit... it’s just idiots that don’t use turn signals. The actual amount of traffic isn’t bad, generally.

Have you driven in Houston? How about the northeast, where all the roads are too narrow and everyone just does what they want! I think It’s okay compared to that.

Definitely have driven in Houston. Everything’s just fast and angry. Haven’t driven in the northeast, but I have driven in Chicago, which is not that different from Houston.

I don’t think I’ve ever driven where you are and NOT gotten lost. Every single time.

I'm also a Canadian who got into RVC (as well as a couple American schools) and ended up declining because of the cost. Took a couple years longer than expected, but I'll be starting at a Canadian school this fall! Totally worth it to keep trying. I can answer questions as well about applying to the States as a Canadian.

Houston's terrifying. Chicago ain't bad really, just bumper to bumper + lane changes and suddenly the right lane turns into parked vehicles. TTown is fairly chill, but I need moar data points. They had good FM stations though.

But the streets are in order! Named streets north to south and the numbers east to west. Is it hard?

Reminds me of this lol (starting around 1 minute)

What the hell you doing in East Tulsa? The other side of the river is weird. That’s basically just Sand Springs at that point.
Either the airport or doing **** in BA! I had to go bridesmaid dress shopping in BA and was remarkably lost, even with GPS

I’m getting my east/west mixed up. Yeah BA changes the names of all the streets. But that’s not Tulsa... that’s BA. And the airport is much more like North Tulsa, and the numbers and street names still apply up there, you just get to the shady streets like MLK and Admiral.

Are you able to pm me? Due to privacy on your profile I can't seem to start a convo! Thanks 🙂

My issues driving in Tulsa was always the construction. Like I'd be trucking along in the right lane waiting for the exit and all of a sudden it's been moved off to the left because of construction so you miss it, then the GPS is yelling at you and I'm yelling back because it didn't know about the changes, etc. Or the detours would get confusing because it's a maze where the different construction projects intersect and stuff.

Not sure where to put this post, but I guess here is good...
I drove just under 2,000 miles this week (1,989 to be exact). Drove to a job interview 5 hours away from ResidencyTown M-W, packed up all my belongings into my small SUV and cleaned my apartment Wednesday night into Thursday, then drove 20ish hours from ResidencyTown to my hometown Friday into today...I did 12.5ish yesterday and 7.5ish today. I'm exhausted. Winston was a trouper the whole way. He stayed buckled into his Ruffwear seatbelt and napped on a huge pile of dog beds (literally...there were three dog beds and his folded up crate in the passenger seat and over the console) the entire way. He peed in six different states on Friday! The rave part is that I'm finally back home...now I have just over three weeks to cram for boards, then all that will be left is to find a job and move all over again.

That is a level of adventure my dog can only dream of 😀 Her record is a measly 2 Canadian provinces in one day

For my fellow Marvel friends, I just want to let you know that Endgame finally beat Avatar for top box office numbers!!!

I have driven in Chicago

Not a fan of big cities any more. Driving around Denver this summer has been less than thrilling.

Oh wait and 1 more rave. I’m 6’3 and forever skinny. Like, REALLY skinny. It was always a point of self consciousness for me and at my lowest (while still 6’3) I was 130 lbs. Usually people are excited about losing weight, but this is a similar yet opposite struggle. I gained a lot of weight over the course of freshman year of college and got up to 160 lbs and felt like I looked really good. Still some more to go, but I was happy. Then I went to Mexico, got ascariasis (who the hell gets ascariasis?) and went back down to 130 lbs. For the last 3-ish years I’ve been steadily going up but progress was slow. Today I stepped on the scale and was at 161 lbs! So I’m officially the heaviest I’ve ever been, in a good way.
I hear you @ajs513 ! It's not as much an ongoing problem for me, but last year I hit 5'6" and 112 lbs for medical reasons. I looked emaciated! I'm glad to hear you're happier with your weight and health!
I feel this! I'm naturally super thin. Before being diagnosed with celiac, I dipped below 100 lbs and I'm 5'7". After my sister's boyfriend died, the same thing happened to her. Stress related non-eating and being underweight for health related reasons really sucks. And people would tell me all the time "oh just be happy you don't have to worry about your weight". The thing is, you DO have to worry about your weight, just the opposite. You have to work hard to keep on weight.
Anyways, I'm 115 now and pretty comfortable here, even though I may be technically slightly underweight still. I really need to actually work out some, and set a schedule for doing so during the school year. I always feel and look better when I put the time in to doing so. It's hard going from a college athlete to having no motivation lol. I never had to go through the self motivation stage of working out because people were always telling me what to do and when for exercise!

True - the construction is just a given here. When it stops, it’s about time for it to start again.

Speaking of weight-related things (albeit in the opposite direction), I had an appointment with my PCP this week and I’ve apparently lost 15 pounds! I don’t know how I’ve dropped that much considering that I’ve only just very recently picked up running again and my diet has honestly gotten worse, if anything, but I’ll take what I can get.

I’m 5’6” and weighed 215 at my largest, so I can definitely stand to lose quite a bit more. I’ve been told I don’t look nearly as heavy as I do so I guess I carry it pretty well, but I still want to get to an actually healthy weight for my height. I’m hoping that by getting back into running and actually sticking with it, I can eventually get back down to where I need to be. The doctor tweaked my levothyroxine dosage, as well, so that should help, too.
I tried to go running with my greyhound but it was like exercising with one of those parachutes

except my greyhound was the parachute not wanting to move faster then his slow trot 😆

I should sign up for the local indoor soccer league again. it kicked my ass but is great cardio and muscle workout while still being fun 😛

It’s too bad you don’t live in OK. Addy will outrun me every time. I once gave her to my friend who likes to run (because they we tried me her and our dogs running together but I am the limiting factor in that equation), but even then Addy’s just a freaking champ. She’s a skinny long legged goddess and I am jealous.

But also a complete and total couch potato who only wants to cuddle.

Someone say couch potato?

Tobias can and will outrun any dog he interacts with. He's super ****ing speedy. But try to take him jogging? Nah he ain't into it. He was built for speed, not distance. I wanna try and get him into it a bit more though. Greyhounds are known as couch potatoes but he never gets on the couch. He has his own bed in each room of the house lol. So maybe a bed or ground potato?

This is a rave/inquiry post! :soexcited:

I am super excited that a small group of individuals and I have created our universities FIRST Pre-Vet Club (hurray!) and will be holding meetings starting in the Fall. As the President, I am facing the task of coming up with some discussion topics, workshops, and events to coordinate and bring minds interested in the field together. I'd love to set the foundation for a fun and interactive club for future veterinarians that are/will be attending our school when I leave and pass the torch on.

While the other officers and I have come up with some ideas to pursue while we get this going, I thought I would reach out to this community to get some input. If you have time, I would love your thoughts!

#1) Were you in a Pre-Vet (or similar) club in your Undergrad? If so, what things did you enjoy the most about it and what was absolutely a flop?
#2) What would be a really cool experience to have in this type of club?
#3) If you are a current Veterinary student, what would have been a club experience you are having now that you wish you had seen in your undergrad?

Thank you in advance for your time!

@RahyneDays I wasn’t active in my pre-vet club, but there were some cool things they did. Resume reviews, mixers, and q&a’s with representatives from different vet schools. Those are some things you should focus on to really benefit from having a pre-vet club. They also had vets come in to share their experience with applying to and getting through vet school. That’s definitely important. I would definitely try to see if you can reach out to other pre-vet e-board members at other schools to see how they make their club successful. Also look into the APVMA and see about organizing a club trip to a conference.

Something I think would have been really interesting/helpful would be to have guest vet speakers talking about some of the more non-traditional vet jobs out there - things like pathologists, lab animal vets, USDA inspectors, nutritionists, radiologists, zoo vets, etc. Being a vet isn't all just dogs cats horses and cows 🙂

The one pre-vet club meeting I made it to was when a zoo vet was speaking. Had...a pretty big impact on me 😀

We had quite a few Skype Q&A sessions with current vet students and people in different avenues of the profession (including @kcoughli and @WhtsThFrequency and @JaynaAli ) which were thouroughly enjoyed by all and very educational.

We also did volunteering at the local wildlife rehab centre (which was a flop....Often it was only us exec members who showed up), annual lambing at a local sheep farm, and lots of vets presenting about their careers.

One of the best live presentations was two vets who came and talked about mental health and the harder aspects of the profession. It was incredibly valuable, especially since quite a few club members hadn't been exposed to the crap aspects of it yet.

I found the most difficult part of managing our club was getting the attendance we wanted/required (and we aren't a particularly small university). There were a few times that we would have a speaker come and there would be only a few exec members, which was embarrassing and waste of time for that person. So we only had meetings every few weeks, and specifically chose speakers where we thought the turnout would be okay (with Facebook events to get an idea of how many people would show up). Also advertise the club hard at the beginning of the year. I got permission from the prof to do presentations in the first year bio lectures and that got us a ton of people who hadn't heard of the club before.

@vetmedhead?

From personal experience as a staff member at a facility where prevets came to volunteer as a group, I recommend against it unless you are very organised about it.
We had a pre-vet group come and volunteer at a wildlife place when i was staff and it was terrible.
If you do want to go volunteer as a group, here Is how to NOT do it.
The group would show up like once a month or every other month but without any notice. So all of a sudden I would have 6 people showing up looking for stuff to do and I had no idea they were coming.
Also, since they would only come for 2-3 hours every 4-8 weeks, and often they were different people, there was zero skill retention. Instead of being helpful, I had to babysit them. In addition to that, they were very vocally unhappy about doing grunt work. I was asked on multiple occasions by the “head” of the group why they weren’t doing medical procedures since they were pReVeT students. He even asked me if he could take rads and administer IV fluids. Multiple times. Even after I said no.
I told them that volunteers aren’t trained to handle animals until the staff knows that they can follow directions for simple tasks like laundry, dishes, and cleaning enclosures and that if they came more regularly then maybe I would give them more responsibility. They never came regularly. I eventually had to ask them to stop coming because they tripled my workload and complained the whole time.

Not trying to tell you not to volunteer as a group. I think that can be great experience. But it needs to be well organized and you need to communicate with the staff where you are volunteering, and remember that you are there to help THEM and hopefully gain some skills in the process.

Sorry didn’t mean to go off on a big rant but seeing fern mention the group volunteering at a wildlife place just brought back these terrible terrible memories so please don’t be that group for someone else.

I appreciate the insight! I agree organization in that scenario would have to be key, I couldn't imagine 6 random people showing up at our clinic to try to "help" :nailbiting:

Also just to reiterate:
Vets still clean enclosures
Vet students still clean enclosures
Pre vets need to expect and be ok with cleaning enclosures
No one is above grunt work

Thanks for the feedback! Getting Skype Q &A's sounds like a fantastic idea as well as brutally honest mental health conversations. I don't want to run off my future colleagues but I think its a big conversation to get started early. I also fear low turn out, but that is why I am searching for ideas from others now, here's hoping it's successful!

One of my undergrad's pre-vet clubs put "PREVET" on all their posters (no hyphen) so I thought it was a typo for "PREVENT" and was all confused since I didn't know what they were trying to prevent. That or they were greeting me in Russian (again, misspelled).
Noted! 🤣

I've added that to the list! Thank you!

Resume reviews shouldn't be too hard to organize I would hope. I think Q&A's with representatives is a great idea, not sure how reasonable it would be to ask them to come visit us but maybe organizing via Skype could happen! Love the ideas, thank you!

My pre vet club went to a zoo every year and toured the vet hospital, which was cool. We were near two different large zoos, so they would rotate which one they would go to that year so you got to see two different ones and how they differ. They also had suturing wet labs and had someone from our lab animal unit come in and run that (I didn’t go to a school with a vet school, just a university with a lot of research going on).

The way I’ve seen it done if someone couldn’t come in person is they would do it via Skype like you said, and put the presenter up on a projector. Then set up the camera facing the room and students could be seen and ask questions that way. As long as you ask in advance and cast a wide net, you’ll definitely find someone willing to meet with you either in person or via Skype.

What a great idea! I think a wet lab would be great for getting our "feet wet" as a group
